Dear Mrs Madgett,
Thank you so much for your very kind sympathy in our great trouble.
Mother phoned to say last night that Ernie’s condition is the same, and the Sister says that he hasn’t any sensation in the lower part of him yet, but there is still a faint hope of his recovery. Ernie’s so brave and cheerful, I know he will get better soon if he keeps cheerful like that.
I am going up tomorrow Saturday 1st on a 48 hours pass. I only will wish I could stay there with him always, but they would [sic] let me do that. I promise to let you know how Ernie is at the weekend.
I am posted to Farnborough on 6th January on a four months course which I am not looking forward to.But there is a

Good thing about it I shall only be 2 hours from home. So I can get home every weekend I hope.
Hooping you and Mr Madgett are keeping well. I’ll write again in a day or so
Yours most sincerely,
Mary

It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. LAGER “A”
Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: New Years Eve 1943.
In a few hours 1944 will be here. From it I hope for one thing above all else & that of course is to be reunited with my beloved wife & daughter. I send both of you my fondest love & warmest greetings coupled with every best wish for a year of happiness, with many similar ones to follow. I hope you are both well & coping with the anxious & laborious work of moving in & settling down I anxiously await news of progress. We are now in the grip of a real winter – wind & driving snow, now getting quite deep. Until it really started we had every possible form of precipitation with heavy frost alternating with slushy thaw. An impossible climate here. I’m not sorry to see the end of 1943. Quite the most unpleasant year of my life. Always yrs. John
