[underlined] 'LIKE DAYLIGHT RAID' [/underlined] [inserted] No 11 23/4/9/42
Lane of Flares Over the Rhine
LONG strings of flares dropped by enemy fighters made Thursday night's heavy attack by 'planes of Bomber Command on the twin Rhineland towns of Mannheim-Ludwigshafen almost like a daylight raid.
The fighters tried to get the flares in line along both the ingoing and outgoing track of the bombers. The result was two lanes of flares almost at right-angles to each other.
"Flares came whizzing down past us with their parachutes open," said the navigator of a Lancaster.
It was a clear night, with very good visibility. Night fighters were, therefore, given the responsibility of defending the target.
As there was no moon, the Germans used a great number of searchlights, working in small cones, to silhouette the bombers.
At one time 22 JU 88's could be seen by the crew of a single bomber all over the target at the same time. "The sky seemed to be filled with tracer," a pilot said.
Many Combats
Fighters could also be seen up to a distance of 40 miles on each side of Mannheim, and some bombers were followed after they had crossed the coast on the way home. One of these "trailers," a JU 88, was shot down into the sea by a Stirling.
Often the light of the flares gave good warning of the approach of fighters.
There were many combats, and first reports show that a good number of the enemy were destroyed or damaged.
Fires were soon burning in the target. "They were in the shape of a star," one crew reported, "with the main blaze in the centre and [missing letters]er fires radiating out from it."
Other Raids
Mannheim has now been raided 60 times. Ludwigshafen is on the opposite bank of the Rhine, and is an important chemical and armament producing centre.
They were last raided on the night of September 5, when 1,500 tons of bombs were dropped causing heavy damage to big war plants and communication centres.
A third of Mannheim's population of 247,000 is engaged in the electrical and engineering industries. It has miles of docks and wharves and extensive railway installations, with a line linking Germany with Italy. Aero engines and submarine Diesels are made there.
Small forces of bombers also attacked Darmstadt and Aachen, the Air Ministry communiqué states.
Fighter Command aircraft on intruder patrols over France and Germany destroyed four enemy aircraft.
Thirty-two bombers are missing.

ONE
RAF Lecture - "PRESS ON"
Joined the Royal Air Force in June 1941 as an Air Observer under training and saw service in London, Torquay, Eastbourne, Blackpool, South Africa, Honeyburne, and Long Marston.
So far, I had flown in Oxfords, Ansons, and Whitleys (known as a flying coffin). It was now March 1943 and I was in a crew totalling five and had now completed Operational Training.
The training was marvellous, we were happy, and all lived the life of Riley.
Events took a much more serious note in a posting to RAF Station Rufforth to convert to Halifax bombers. At Rufforth the crew was increased to 7 by the addition of a mid-upper gunner and a flight engineer. Conversion took just one month. Because of the rather absent minded behaviour of the Flight Engineer the Captain asked me to take over the job of pilot's mate in addition to navigation & bombing duties.
The crew now consisted of 4 Englishmen, 1 Scot, and 2 Canadians. We were all about 21 except Jock who was 38 and needed reading glasses. We all got on splendidly.
In May 1943 we were posted to 102 Squadron at Pocklington and here we very quickly learned that losses were currently extremely high and concequently [sic] morale at that time was low
What could you do to help survival ???
Keep on track corkscrew always near, or over, enemy territory, watch for fighters always, arrive on target at correct time – object is to saturate the defences
BEFORE THE OPERATION
At 10.00 notice on blackboard says "PARTY". About 16.00 briefing --- target, route, enemy defences along route-weather forcaste [sic], wind strengths & directions-role on target-work out courses-egg, bacon, beans - collect coffee, sandwiches, orange juice, chewing gum, parachute, sextant, escape & survival packs, caffiene pills, assemble crew -
Squadron Commander chalks AGLA on our pocket flap-aircrew bus to dispersal-Warm up aircraft engines, test magnetoes, taxi round perimeter track to runway-await green light and take off.
The aircraft & crew is now on their own and will remain so until touchdown.

THE RESCUE
2 Typhoons of 198 Squadron airborne Martlesham Heath 15.15 to find and obtain a fix on our dinghy; this was achieved.
2 Waruses [sic] airborne Martlesham Heath 18.37 on 22-6-43, one Walrus picked up 4 of our crew, and the other the remaining 3. Both Walruses had difficulty in taking of [sic] due to the rough sea & heavy load, but one achieved this after 20 mins and several bounces. The pilot of the heavier aircraft decided tht [sic] it was too dangerous to attempt a take off and started taxing [sic] to the English coast.

A Walrus and 2 Spitfires airborne Martlesham Heath 21.20 on 22-6-43. The sea was too rough for the Walrus to land, but it stayed in the vicinity and was ultimately able to direct MTB D16 (RN) to the taxiing Walrus.
2 Spitfires airborne Martlesham Heath 22.19 on 22-6-43.
Our Walrus taxied from 19.50 on 22-6-43 until 02.00 on 23-6-43 until prtrol [sic] was exhausted. At this time waves were 10 to 15 high when the RN took 20 mins to attach a tow rope to our Walrus.
The RN towed us for 1 hour but we were taking such a battering that it was

requested that the Walrus be abandoned and the crews be transferred to the MTB which was achieved with difficulty.
We arrived at Felixstowe at 6.30 on 23-6-43.
It was later learned that the Walrus drifted onto a sandbank and was later towed to Harwich by HMS Mackay (destroyer).
De-briefed by AVM Gus Walker who commented on the loss of 4 "T" Halifaxes on 4 successive operations; he wondered about sabotage.
We were given 14 days leave and were requested to consider volunteering for Pathfinders.
We were informed, following a meeting years after the war between the Pathfinder Association and the Luftwaffe Association, that we had been shot down by W/O Vinkler in a ME 110. Regretfully Vinkler died in combat 24 hours later.

My dear Mum,
Received your air mail letter this morning just after my final signals exam, this I am glad to say completed them, and I know you will be pleased to know that I passed them all, so the road is clear now, so am now looking forward to graduation day next Thursday. I wish you could be here to see it but I know you will be thinking about me. To date I don’t know what we shall be doing after, perhaps I will get word next week, in any case I will cable you. I am very sorry the mail has been pretty scarce the last week or so – but now that I have achieved my aim I will have more time for writing. As far as I know I shall be returning to Moncton a few days after graduation, if this is so I shall spend the week-end at Mrs. Ashton and stop en-route at Montreal for a day before continuing on, then I expect I will be at Moncton for about three weeks before we are shipped home, so unless I get a job out here, it won’t be long before I am back in England. I have a few more snaps for you, so I will drop them in an envelope and post it the same time as this. Closing now all the best to Dennis & Bill.
Yours lovingly
Reg xxxxx

Dear Dad,
It must be about time for my letter home. I received Marie’s when I returned home from Pirie on Sunday. Glad to know everything at home is ok. What with the relaxation from concentrated swat, the flying was a relief although we got so much of it and it did make us very tired- I’m feeling better now.
Still we now have our hours up and have only a few night flips & a few photo exercises to complete our course. However we are well behind with exams & will find it pretty stiff over the next 2 weeks, by which time they should be almost over.
I still don’t know what chance I have of getting leave but I should get a few days unless I go to Pirie instead of Sale. Not a very happy thought. I still have a heavy cough in the mornings but now feel alright & hope the next 2 weeks don’t muck things up unduly.
I wrote to Dan earlier in the week and received one from Eileen yesterday. By the way I suppose you did receive last week’s rather week effort from Pirie. Has Dan been in to Adelaide yet?
Glad to know the lad enjoyed his week in Colbinabbin. From Eileen’s description he must have improved considerably to have been dubbed a “city slicker”. Blame her not me ! Just as a matter of interest how did he do it? Wiped it off on the back of his hand I presume.
Managed to get round to Mass this morning. I think Fr. Fahey is a bit disappointed with the attendance on Thursday mornings for there is usually ny about 10 or 12. Still chaps are frequently flying –it is hard enough at any time to clean up and make parade by 7.30 on any morning. The extra ½ hr is hard to make up.
Amongst the new arrivals lately were ‘Brian Hamilton’(Kensington) & Alex Brown from work. Whilst I was at Clontarf, one of the girls from the department told me I was very serious of late & that I should let my head go a bit as in my army days. Consequently I write back a glossary of horrible drivel & lies about exploits etc & impressions in the West. Blow me down if the idiot doesn’t submit it to the Editors of Dalgety’s Warriors & it came out in the last issue..
It reads horribly & luckily there are no brick buildings here for I’ve been tearing about ever since looking for a brick wall to bang my head against for being stupid as to write such trash. And she prides herself on gaining her majority just prior to this.
Haven’t heard any news of Jim of late. I should write to him but I guess you realise I haven’t much time & in any case there is little news this end & I suppose you keep him up to the tee with it.
The Dons look a good bet next Saturday. By the way how are the horses treating you. What are your cup long shots?
Well Dad, I’ve come to the end of my tether. We are still getting the bleak wet weather so typical of Mt. Gambier. I’m closing now & do hope to get home within 3 weeks if only for a brief moment.
By the way- here I go again- much & all as I hate the inland I was pleased to have such a good look at the S.A. inland & an extensive view up & down Spencer’s Gulf last week. I don’t know how people can live out there in the lake country. The lakes by the way are all just mile after mile of dry salt pans & I was glad I saw them from low level in an aircraft rather than a little lower on foot. Believe me we did get over quite a bit of it.
You won’t hear from me next week for I won’t know whether I’m coming or going. Until next I write
Love to all at home
Pat

97 (Straits Settlements) Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
Bourn, Cambridge.
25th September, 1943.
Dear Mrs. Layne,
It is with the deepest regret that I must confirm that your husband, Warrant Officer Layne, failed to return from night operations on the 23/24th September, 1943, and I wish to express the sympathy of the whole Squadron with you in your anxiety.
Warrant Officer Layne took part in a raid on Mannheim, Germany as Wireless Operator, no news having since been received. We can but hope that the aircraft was forced to land and that the crew are safe, even as prisoners of war.
Since your husband joined the Squadron in March of this year, he had taken part in 26 operations over enemy territory. He was a member of one of our most outstanding crews who had operated against all the important objectives in Germany and Italy. He performed his duties as Wireless Operator efficiently and his keenness was a good example to others. The loss of such a crew is a sad blow to the Squadron.
His kit and personal effects are being carefully checked and will be sent to the R.A.F. Central Depository, from whom you will hear in due course.
If any news is received you will be notified immediately, and in the meantime, I join with you in hoping we shall soon hear that your husband and the rest of the crew are safe.
Yours sincerely,

1 October, 1943.
Madam,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your husband, Warrant Officer Walter Henry Layne, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 23rd/24th September, 1943, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as wireless-operator / air-gunner set out to bomb Mannheim and was not heard of again.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your husband is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
The Air Council desire me to convey to you their sympathy in your present anxiety.
I am, Madam,
Your obedient Servant,
