Ron Riding's Royal Canadian Air Force observers and air gunners flying log book
Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for R H Riding, navigator, covering the period from 5 January 1942 to 25 April 1948. Detailing his flying training, operations flown, instructor duties and post war flying with 1332 Heavy Conversion Unit, 242 Squadron and 230 Operational Conversion Unit. He was stationed at RCAF St Johns, RCAF Caron, RCAF Mont Joli, RCAF Rivers, RCAF Summerside, RCAF Greenwood, RAF Thornaby-on-Tees, RAF Blida, RAF Protville, RAF Gibraltar, RAF Northolt, RAF Dishforth, RAF Longtown, RAF Oakington, RAF Abingdon and RAF Lindholme. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Battle, Hudson, Baltimore, Wellington, C-87, York, Liberator, Stirling, Dakota, Oxford, Skymaster, RY3, Halifax and Lancaster. He flew a total of 54 daylight operations, 6 with 500 Squadron, 47 with 52 Squadron and one with 69 Squadron, on which he was shot down and evaded for 10 weeks. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Merrill. Targets are listed as convoy escort, anti-submarine patrols, U-boat hunt, air sea rescue, including Sardinia, Civitavecchia, Spezia, Ustica, Alicudi islands, Gozo, Catania, Sicily, Anzio and Gibraltar.

Eric Scott's observer's and air gunner's flying log book
Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for Eric Scott, bomb aimer, covering the period from 1 September 1942 to 4 January 1946. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as Air Bomber. He was stationed at RCAF Picton (31 Bombing & Gunnery School), RCAF Mount Hope (33 Air Navigation School), RAF Moreton-in-Marsh (21 OTU and 311 FTU), RAF Kairouan (142 Squadron), RAF El Ballah (Advanced Bombing & Gunnery School), RAF Qastina (77 OTU), RAF Torterella (37 Squadron) and RAF Pershore (23 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Anson, Battle Wellington, Dominie and DC3. Targets were - first tour – Messina (6), Olbia, Cagliari, Catania (2), Palermo, Syracuse, Marsala, Battipaglia (2), Reggio, Aquino, Pratica di Mare, Capodichino, Naples, Lamezia, Paolo-Sapri, Salerno, Bagnoli, Torre Annunziata, Leghorn, Grosseto, Formia, 'Grass Roads' [sic], Viterbo, Pesaro, Leghorn, Grazzanise and Civitavecchia. Second tour – Valence , Ploesti, Szőny, Miskolc, Bologna (2), Ravenna (3), Pesaro, Yugoslavia (Nickel), Danube (mining), Eleusis (2), Rimini, Salonika, Verona, Székesfehérvár, Opicina, Vinkovci, and Maribor. Shot down on this raid. He flew 35 night operations with 142 Squadron and 21 night with 37 Squadron making a total of 56. His pilots on operations were Sergeant Pearce, Flying Officer Kirley and Pilot Officer Jeffares.

Top left first page - three-quarter length portrait of an airman wearing tunic and side cap. Text notes that he joined Royal Air Force in 1936 as a Halton apprentice armourer. Promoted to flight sergeant at the beginning of the war he began a long association with 57 Squadron then flying Blenheims as part of British Expeditionary Force in France followed by postings to RAFs Wyton and Lossiemouth. Subsequently served with 57 Squadron on Wellingtons at RAF Wyton and RAF Feltwell. He then moved to RAF Scampton where the squadron re-equipped with Manchester and then Lancaster. Relates meeting Alma Turner later Mrs Leedham during an ground incident concerning a burning fully loaded Lancaster after which he was mentioned in dispatches. Page 2 - Left middle a colour three-quarter length wedding portrait of a man wearing tunic next to a woman wearing wedding dress and holding a bouquet of flowers. Right middle a b/w family portrait of a woman in dark dress on the left, a child in the middle and a flight sergeant wearing tunic on the right. Text continues with subsequently served with 9, 227, 49 and 100 Squadrons and describes postwar career.
