Dove vivevate voi a Dogliani?
No, no, è stata una cosa molto dolorosa né, perché a quell’età lì non sei ancora capace a ragionare, hai solo paura.

Description
An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

September 7th 1943
My darling Johnnie,
Here we are installed in my parents’ new abode, a very nice bungalow with a good big garden and a perfectly lovely view out to sea and up the estuary. It really is an awfully nice place & will make a perfectly delightful place for us to bring the children for their summer holidays! That was very much my people’s idea in taking it. There is everything for a good holiday here, bathing, sailing, fishing, riding, lovely walks & a garden to sunbathe in. Frances is absolutely thrilled by the sea and all the multifarious boats. We go down to the beach each day, down 214 steps, then [censored words]. Here Frances digs & paddles to her heart’s content, luckily the weather is fine & warm, & I sit on the sands knitting like the old dowager I am fast becoming. I have bathed once myself, but today & yesterday the wind was a bit cold & also we didn’t get down there early enough. But gosh its grand to be by the sea again. Capt. Cole from whom my people bought the bungalow, is a big bug round here, owns a number of farms & generally runs the place. He has fallen for Frances in a big way, has offered to take us sailing & fishing in his various yachts & dinghies, motor trips to the beauty spots round, riding on his polo ponies, & would give me a job of some sort if I would stay down here & park Frances on Mother (which of course I couldn’t do anyway, she’d be too much of a handful.) Anyway I’m much more anxious to get a house of some sort for us & make sure of that essential item. Still it certainly will be a lovely place to come for holidays. There are 5 bedrooms, so quite a number can be housed at a pinch.
As for our proposed house at Chalfont St Giles, I have taken the preliminary steps but am not yet sure whether or not we have secured it. I sent £100 to Mr Burgis, our solicitor (!!) to pay down as deposit & he wrote today saying he had not yet paid it over but had written to the agents – I do hope he won’t go & lose it for us by delaying the deposit or anything. As regards this deposit, your father gave me a nasty shock. You remember when the other house at Broomfield was on the cards he had himself offered to lend me £200
[page break]
towards it & seemed to approve of the idea of my trying to get our house ready for you. When that fell through I returned the £200 to him & so had to ask for it again when this house came into view. This time he wrote & said he had had other calls on his resources & could only lend me £100, which I take it means he is angry or disapproving or something, I don’t know why. Anyway it makes things a bit awkward for me, because we shall have to pay 1/4 of the price on the nail viz £375 (out of £1500) & my people really aren’t able to lend me more than £200 just now with the sale of Lido not yet concluded. That means now that he has suddenly cut me down by £100 without warning, that I shall have to raise the £75 out of the remaining Nat. Certs in my name & so be left with absolutely no margin for emergencies. However it cant be helped & I shall just have to avoid emergencies like the plague. I should also prefer to pay back the £100 to your father as soon as poss, if he is in such straightened circumstances; we could either do that out of our joint P/O a/c or from the credit to you’re a/c with the RAF (now £140 at the least.) I will tomorrow get a withdrawal form for our joint P/O account & try to send it to you but doubt if it will get to you [missing words] if it does. I wish you to transfer me £100 out of your RAF account to pay back to your father. He really is a difficult man. At first he seemed to think it was the right thing for me to do my best to get us a home, but now he says he “has no doubt house property is a good personal investment if one has the means available” – as tho’ I’m making speculative investments instead of straining every nerve to get a roof over our heads!
I had an airgraph from Leslie today written 27.8. saying he had had a letter from you of 24th May. He is fit & doubtless very busy just now, working his way slowly but surely towards home.
Mother has been busy today unpacking the Persian rugs she brought home with her – simply lovely they are & worth a mint over here I should think. I believe she will let us buy the white carpet we had in the bedroom from her, but we haven’t discussed price & whether or not we could afford it is another matter. Frances had a glorious time paddling & digging on the sands today, ending up by taking off her sunsuit & slipping through the rivulets in the nude. She is talking a lot more clearly now. I am trying parting her hair in the middle with a ribbon round it, it is getting quite long now & curlier than ever. When it is untidy it goes into big corkscrews all over her head. It is as red as ever - I have to admit that she’s rather alluring! [drawing of a head with ribbon in hair]. I do so wish you could only see her. Still she’ll keep!
I am wrestling with more tax forms. I sent the whole thing off to Touche & they have asked various queries about your service pay - I don’t know the answers so had better say “yes”. Service pay received year ended 31.5.43 £195. Is that correct? Who knows!
I love you always, my darling, & long for you terribly – it would be perfect here if you were with me & Frances. Yours always, Ursula.

[inserted] L- [/inserted] Philip Jenkinson
Eulogy
Philips Early Life
1937 At 14 he worked on a poultry farm near where they lived at Constantine, Cornwall
1940 He joined the LDV (Home Guard)
1941 He volunteered for Aircrew and trained as an Air Gunner, Some of his training was done in Canada. Eventually he joined No. 10 Squadron as a mid upper gunner on Halifax Aircraft.
August 1943. I first met Philip when he was on leave following 7 Operations over Germany.
29th August he returned to his Squadron (I started my RAF training to become a Pilot).
On the night of 6/7th September Philip was shot down during a raid on Munich, his aircraft on fire, Philip and 5 crew members escaped by parachute (the pilot and rear gunner both went down with the aircraft)
Philip and his Bomb Aimer both landed in the same field, buried their parachutes and started to walk due west towards Switzerland. After 9 nights walking, with very little food they came to a town, not far from the Swiss border but were captured by German soldiers and remained Prisoners of war until the 29th April 1945 when they were released by the Desert Rats and flown home.
Philip had been posted as missing on the 7th september [sic] 1943 and it was then that his mother was on the way to Falmouth on the bus, to shop. Also on the bus was the local Policeman who came
[page break]
up to Mrs Jenkinson (whom he called “Mrs Pickles; the family nick name for Philip) and said “Sorry to hear Pickles is missing, don't worry Mrs Pickles, the Germans wont catch him, I never could!
I returned home from Southern Rhodesia where I had been doing my flying training.
Philip met me and invited me home to dinner. That is when I met his little sister, Evelyn whom I married in 1948. Philip was Best Man at our wedding.
At one time Philip and I served on the same Squadron (511) where we flew transport aircraft to India, Philip as Loadmaster, me as second pilot. Philips aircraft went down as far as Singapore mine went up to Delhi.
In 1947 Philip came out of the RAF and went to manage a poultry farm, I think owned by A G Street a famous broadcaster on farming matters. Philip had married his first wife Norah in september 1947. Unfortunately that marriage was not a success but they had a son, David, who is here today.
By 1956 he had met and married Jean – to cut a long stoty [sic] short Philip And Jean moved to Alscott Farm here at Shebbear. For the first five year at Alscott my wife and I were in partnership with Philip, but then it was decided that we would go on our own way and Evelyn and I returned to farm in Cornwall.
Philip and I always remained good friends, and of course we will miss him terribly.
[page break]
Some of you will know our German friends who owned the farm on which Philip landed by parachute. It was in 1983 that we read in the RAF News that the Germans had built a Memorial to a British Crew shot down in January 1945. This so happened to be Philips elder brothers crew – It was built as a bridge of friendship between the British and German people. In 1983 we decided to go to Germany to see this memorial, this we did.
We were put in touch with A German Air Historian Who invited us to stay with him.
It was he who took us to the farm on which Philips aircraft had crashed.
This was the start of a very close friendship with the German family at the farm where we go to stay year after year.
Just before we left home yesterday we received a telephone call from our German friends to say that they would hold a memorial service for Philip at the little church
which had been badly damaged by bombs jetisonned [sic] by Philips aircraft.
What wonderful friends these German people have been.

AIR MINISTRY
Casualty Branch
77 Oxford Street
London W.1.
21st September 1943
P408495/5/43/P.4.A.2.B.
Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Sergeant Leslie Phillip Jenkinson, Royal Air Force, is missing as a result of air operations on the night of 6th/7th September, 1943, when a Halifax aircraft in which he was flying as air gunner set out to bomb Munich and was not heard from again.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
The Air Council desire me to convey to you their sympathy in your present anxiety.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
[signed] Charles Evans
N. Jenkinson, Esq.,

[German newspaper cutting with English translation]
Our newspaper wrote: The rebuilding of the church St. Stefan on the open field between, Denklingen and Dienhausen, called the “Osteraufkirch” is almost finished. The church a art-historical jewel in Fuchstal was destroyed, in the night from the 6th to the 7th September in the year of the war 1943, short after 10 p.m. by a air-raid of Munich from bombs. By this air-raid a German night-fighter pushed the English Bomber aside and forced him to a emergency landing. Before this forced landing he throw out the bombs, before he came down between Leeder and Aschthal. From this bombs most of the church lay in ruins. With the rebuilding from the church they started spring 1966, and to redecorate the inside spring 1967.

MUNICH
Some years ago I researched the air raids on Munich, in some detail.
In 1987, Philip Jenkinson, now a farmer in Devon, who had been shot down at Munich on 6/7th September 1943, contacted me.
For a few years previously, Philip had been communicating with a German, amateur Historian, who had been interested in the RAF raids upon Munich and Augsburg, for some years, and who had visited all the wreck sites, and had interviewed many of the local residents who had witnessed these raids. This was Herr Hans Grimminger.
I got involved in research, and we planned for a return visit to Munich, with what survivors could be traced, to take place in 1988.
Hans supplied the Official Luftwaffe records of the raid, from which I made notes of the aircraft shot down. I obtained from the Public Records Office in Kew, the Operational Records of the aircraft involved, and from these Records the names of the crews.
Hans recorded the fate of the crews.
I recorded 17 aircraft, 14 Halifaxes, and 3 Lancasters, including 1 Lancaster which had crashed into the sea, just off the English Coast, on the way out.
Some confusion about these numbers has arisen by comparison with other records. I believe this to be due to the loss of a Halifax of 148 Squadron which was on SOE Operations the same night.
I have recorded 115 RAF Casualties, and have identified 28 POWs. 1 possibly 2 were Evaders. I have always thought that 30 POWs went back to Munich, 22 from VIB, and 8 from elsewhere.
Hans Grimminger's records show 31 POWs, and it is known that no Officers went back to Munich.
I tried to contact all those that I have recorded from records, and found that many had passed away.
In the event, only 4 of us made the return trip.
One of our party, Hugh Moore had actually made a note of the Unteroffizeir who was our Interpreter at Munich. He was Richard Dassburger, an Austrian. Hans managed to locate him. However, he seems to have been treated quite harshly by the American Occupation Forces, and refused to meet us.
I have also recorded the casualties at Munich for 6/7th September, as Killed:- Men 66, Women 93, Children 18, Soldiers 15, POW men 10, POW women 2, Total 204. Wounded:- Men 390, Women 223, Children 9, Soldiers 55, POW men 25, POW women 6, Schutz Polizei 15, Luft Schutz Polizei 57, Total 780.
The childrens [sic] casualties I deeply regret.
Details of the next raid upon Munich, on 2/3rd October, I have not gone into. Bomber Command Losses of 1943, gives 9 aircraft lost, Casualties 65, of whom 56 were KIA, 8 POWs, and 1 was rescued by Air/sea rescue launch, when the aircraft came down off Beach Head on the return journey.
All of the aircraft involved were Lancasters, 7 of which had no survivors at all.
