On this Munich trip the plane was badly hit by flak. Bill was given priority landing as they were losing fuel and they nearly made it back to Bardney but Bill had to put the plane down in a field in Minting as all engines failed. Everyone survived although Bill lost teeth from being flung through the windscreen; Mosely, Hill and Jones had back injuries; Lodge broke his arm getting off the downed plane. Moore was found still in his rear turret under a hedge and he suffered concussion. There is a picture of the crashed ED-975 in Moore’s book.
26 September, 1943 new crew with Jock Wilson, Mick Machin and Gerry Parker (American) replacing Mosely, Hill and Jones respectively took ED-499 (WS/X) on a night flying test. Bill found he could not land and took 9 attempts. Bill then kicked everyone else out expect the flight engineer and after checking the landing gear went straight back up and made a number of landings to get his nerve back. Bill only got a telling off.

Parker, the American was then made the permanent mid upper gunner. Lodge the Navigator returned to the crew 20 December, 1943.

This is the end of the information found in the tail gunners book (Clayton Moore). Clayton had done 45 runs and head injuries in the Minting crash were catching up on him with increasing headaches and sight problems. Clayton went back to Canada. At this time only 3 of the original crew remained. Siddle (pilot), Lodge (navigator) and Moore (tail gunner).
Bill Siddle remained on active service until the cessation of hostilities having completed more than 60 operational sorties.
His last day of service was 1 April, 1946.
He died in 1970 aged 48.

Dear Mrs Warner,
I was indeed sorry to have to advise you that your Son, 1801861 Sgt Warner C.H.A. is missing from Air Operations & it is with sincere sympathy both of myself & entire Squadron that I write you at this time.
Your Son was Flt Engineer in an aircraft that took off on an operational Sortie over enemy territory on the night of the 3-4 Sep 1943. but I regret to say failed to return to base. No messages were recieved [sic] from the aircraft after take off & nothing has been heard of it or any member of the crew. There is always the possibility that they may have come down by parachute or made a forced landing in enemy territory in which case news of this would take a considerable time to come through, but you will be immediatly [sic] advised of any further information
[page break]
that is recieved. [sic]
Your Son has shown great keenness & efficiency in his work during the time he has been with the Squadron & had become a popular member who will be greatly missed here & his duties were always carried out with a fine courage & determination.
The personal effects of your Son are now in the custody of the Committee of Adjustment Office, R.A.F. Station, Ludford Magna, who will shortly be writing to you, concerning their disposal.
I feel most deeply for you at this anxious time & we all join with you in hoping & praying that some good news will eventually come through.
Yours Sincerely
G.A. Carey Foster
Wing Commander Commanding
NO 101 Squadron R.A.F.

ONE
RAF Lecture - "PRESS ON"
Joined the Royal Air Force in June 1941 as an Air Observer under training and saw service in London, Torquay, Eastbourne, Blackpool, South Africa, Honeyburne, and Long Marston.
So far, I had flown in Oxfords, Ansons, and Whitleys (known as a flying coffin). It was now March 1943 and I was in a crew totalling five and had now completed Operational Training.
The training was marvellous, we were happy, and all lived the life of Riley.
Events took a much more serious note in a posting to RAF Station Rufforth to convert to Halifax bombers. At Rufforth the crew was increased to 7 by the addition of a mid-upper gunner and a flight engineer. Conversion took just one month. Because of the rather absent minded behaviour of the Flight Engineer the Captain asked me to take over the job of pilot's mate in addition to navigation & bombing duties.
The crew now consisted of 4 Englishmen, 1 Scot, and 2 Canadians. We were all about 21 except Jock who was 38 and needed reading glasses. We all got on splendidly.
In May 1943 we were posted to 102 Squadron at Pocklington and here we very quickly learned that losses were currently extremely high and concequently [sic] morale at that time was low
What could you do to help survival ???
Keep on track corkscrew always near, or over, enemy territory, watch for fighters always, arrive on target at correct time – object is to saturate the defences
BEFORE THE OPERATION
At 10.00 notice on blackboard says "PARTY". About 16.00 briefing --- target, route, enemy defences along route-weather forcaste [sic], wind strengths & directions-role on target-work out courses-egg, bacon, beans - collect coffee, sandwiches, orange juice, chewing gum, parachute, sextant, escape & survival packs, caffiene pills, assemble crew -
Squadron Commander chalks AGLA on our pocket flap-aircrew bus to dispersal-Warm up aircraft engines, test magnetoes, taxi round perimeter track to runway-await green light and take off.
The aircraft & crew is now on their own and will remain so until touchdown.

Both Walruses had difficulty in taking of [sic] due to the rough sea & heavy load, but one achieved this after 20 mins and several bounces. The pilot of the heavier aircraft decided tht [sic] it was too dangerous to attempt a take off and started taxing [sic] to the English coast.

A Walrus and 2 Spitfires airborne Martlesham Heath 21.20 on 22-6-43. The sea was too rough for the Walrus to land, but it stayed in the vicinity and was ultimately able to direct MTB D16 (RN) to the taxiing Walrus.

Our Walrus taxied from 19.50 on 22-6-43 until 02.00 on 23-6-43 until prtrol [sic] was exhausted. At this time waves were 10 to 15 high when the RN took 20 mins to attach a tow rope to our Walrus.
The RN towed us for 1 hour but we were taking such a battering that it was

requested that the Walrus be abandoned and the crews be transferred to the MTB which was achieved with difficulty.
We arrived at Felixstowe at 6.30 on 23-6-43.
It was later learned that the Walrus drifted onto a sandbank and was later towed to Harwich by HMS Mackay (destroyer).
De-briefed by AVM Gus Walker who commented on the loss of 4 "T" Halifaxes on 4 successive operations; he wondered about sabotage.
We were given 14 days leave and were requested to consider volunteering for Pathfinders.
We were informed, following a meeting years after the war between the Pathfinder Association and the Luftwaffe Association, that we had been shot down by W/O Vinkler in a ME 110. Regretfully Vinkler died in combat 24 hours later.

Dear Mr Hughes,
Thank you for your letter.
I can obtain a copy of the recommendation for your DFC, this is usually two pages and has all signatures of all the people who recommended you such as CO Station Commander Group Commander and in some cases the C in C Sir Arthur Harris, who up to the time he died was a very good friend of mine.
The fee would be £8-50p plus 52p for copying and postage.
I can also get copies for all your ops with 427 which if you completed a full tour of 30 or so which I am sure you did the fee would be £I8 plus the copies and postage the copying would be about £8.
Plus this there are combat reports if you were in conflict with a fighter etc and so on as per my ad.
Yours sincerely

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Darling Ursula: Your No 69 is now here & I know where Broomfield is. I don’t know yet whether you have bought the house but I’ll assume that you have. Firstly I [underlined] endorse emphatically [/underlined] your action in doing so & marvel at your courage & ability. The home sounds so attractive from your description. I hated the thought of acquiring a suburban villa. How does the garden compare with Lido or Queens Rd? How old is the house? From my point of view, Liverpool St is easily the most convenient London terminus & the time from Chelmsford is very reasonable. How far is the village from C. I wonder if you are living there now, if you have managed to get our dining room furniture from David Hays & what other furniture you have managed to buy. What a pity that you have to do everything on your own while I live in idleness. I am afraid that you’ll be a bit short of money even when the extra allowances which I have ordered come in. If you fail to get satisfaction from the RAF re Income Tax, ask George Touche to ensure that the RAF is not stinging us, pointing out the GAT deduct tax on our total income. I am quite satisfied with the price of the house – what do annual rates amount to? From now on, dont [sic] spend a single 1d on me that isn’t necessary. I want for nothing (that money could buy) I assure you. How I wish I could help you!! I am very stirred by this news & anxiously await fuller details. Life is as usual here – a new British M.O. is giving me treatment in the form of a daily douche for my nose & my senses are in better shape. I thoroughly enjoyed the Terry’s choc from Frances’ ration I wallow in tobacco smoke whenever I can taste. I have asked Grunfeld’s Swiss friends to order 4 Rolex watches & send them to me here. They are not all for me of course, would you ask Grunfeld to guarantee my credit until after the war? I have had a lot of cig & tobacco gifts recently – my Father & the wardens remember me regularly; who the other donors are is an official secret apparently, 500 Players No3, 200 Players, 1/4 C.G.B. have come anonymously also another gift from MRS Hoare. I wish I could write more about the house which has excited me considerably but I’m just useless here. Best of luck, darling, grateful thanks for everything & love to you both – Ever Yrs John.

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Pilot Officer Hedley Robert Madgett, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 17/18th August, 1943, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out for action and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
