SEPT. 4TH/43
Dear mum, dad, & David.
Sorry I couldn't write before. I've been very busy changing quarters, and then we were over Berlin last night. The officers Mess here is very nice, everybody tried to help, and there's no air of officialdom round the place either. We flew over the outskirts of Templenewsam this morning on our way home, but I couldn't see anything or anybody I knew. Tom says he [underlined] will [/underlined] come to Leeds this next leave and says he'll act as groomsman for me, “I think he likes riding round in cars”, so do you think he could come up on Friday night, as the trains are bad from Barnsley or Darton on a Saturday? I'll write again as soon as I can, so cheerio for now. Lots of love Ken. xxxx David xxxx

Rufforth
4th Sept ‘43
Dear Mum & Dad,
Please forgive me for not writing to you sooner but somehow I’ve not had the time, or else I’ve left it too late to start a letter.
Well I arrived back OK on Wednesday morning after catching the 11.15 pm from Kings Cross, I travelled up with the same Canadian officer I came down with. We arrived at York at 4.40 am and we were lucky in getting a taxi with two other fellows. I was in camp at 5 o’clock and in bed at 5.15 am, managing to scrounge a couple of hours sleep before starting another day at Rufforth. Everything was OK about the pass so I’m glad now I did leave it till late before I came back here. Those two days at home made all the difference to me, I wish I
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined] could be home as often as this always. Thanks a lot for having Pat home and making everything OK, I know I don’t show my feelings as often as I should, but I do think quite a deal, and do not take it all for granted, I’m sure you realise what I mean.
Since we came back we’ve done quite a bit of flying we went up about 9 oclock [sic] on Wednesday morning, so you see we plunged straight back into things here without much time to recover from our 48 hours at home. We’ve flown every day so far, our skipper is certainly keen to get finished here & by the looks of it we shall be leaving within a week. Today we had a cross country flight, the first I’ve done for over 6 weeks boy! was I in a daze. The speed of these planes is too fast for my working at the moment, though I guess it will be OK soon. We went down South quite a way, back &
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined] forth, all over the place, doing about 800 miles in about 4 1/2 hours. Anyway we got egg & bacon & chips afterwards plus our flying rations of chocolate, raisins & chewing gum so thats [sic] some consolation. In the mess this week we managed to get 3 oranges each, my wireless op. also brought some back with him plus some apples & pears (his sister has a greengrocers shop), my rear gunner had some apples & plums, so you can guess we’ve had quite a feed during these last day or so. I think we will be flying tomorrow night, there’s no stopping us now it seems, just 3 nights of this and we shall be finished I should imagine. I think I can safely say that I shall be in the vicinity of York when I’m posted from here and I shall be stationary this time for at least a few months.
There’s not a lot to write
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined] about really, Wednesday night I went to bed early to try & catch up with some sleep Thursday I remained in camp vowing I would write to you & then didn’t. Friday we managed to scrounge a half day off and we all got to York as quick as possible. The bus was full so luckily we caught a lift on a lorry already loaded up with shingle, but still we’re not fussy, it got us to York & thats [sic] the main item. After having tea we went to the flicks and saw “Happidrome” and “Silent Witness” both very ropey films – don’t you ever see them, & then had a few drinks, consequently we missed the last bus & had to return in a taxi. In the pub I met a New Zealander who was at Winnipeg the same time I was there, though he left before me, in October I think. There was a whole flight of them, now some of them are on Ops here, others are in the Middle East & India its queer how everyone seems to get split up in the end.
[page break]
[underlined] 5 [/underlined] Well I think I’ve pretty well exhausted all I wanted to say, so I’ll be saying cheerio for the present
Love to all,
Reg
[page break]
This letter was written at Rufforth (converting to Heavy Bombers (Halifax II series 1A) During my time here my first pilot Vivian was killed on operations over Frankfurt our new pilot (Ex second tour in the Middle East) flew us upside down and we pulled out after losing a lot of height. There were many accidents and aircraft failures e.g. two aircraft had a head-on collision, a propeller spun off another aircraft into the fuselage. Another was shot down by friendly fire whilst on a bombing exercise at night. In all some 60 aircrew were killed and we were glad to go to Pocklington to be on operations.
We did not know then the casualties at Pocklington would be even greater This letter to my parents did not mention any of these events.

Dear Mrs Wilkinson
Thank you for your kind letter and I hope you will forgive me not replying sooner. I have received a letter from your brother in Italy and have just written to him telling him what I know of the night 3/4 September 1943.
Two days ago I was sent back home, on indefinite leave to await release from the service, and have applied for a job in Cambridge. Should I get this post I will be staying not very far from you and I will be very pleased to see you at any time.
Charlie had done four “ops” and we copped it on the fifth “op”. The first one was to Peenemunde on the Baltic coast, just north of [inserted] Stettin. [/inserted] It was a great raid, maybe you remember reading about it in August 1943. All the newspapers were full of it and the RAF had given them photographs of the actual fighting and the target area to print with the various accounts of the raid. Then more recently, within the last two months actually, there have been various reports praising the work the boys did that night when we ruined Jerrys secret equipment laboratories which were working on what we now know as VI and VII’s. As I said, it was a lovely night and a full moon, no clouds, just like daylight, just the night fighters paradise.
Next we went to Munchen-Gladbach in the Rhur and had a pretty rotten night – heavy cloud all the way but got our target all right. Our next trip was the big city – Berlin and after a fairly hectic night we arrived home safe and sound.
The forth was Leverkusen and the target was some chemical works.
The fifth and last as you know, Berlin again.
I know the boys had been buried at Lingen, the Germans told me, about three weeks after my capture. I don’t think we had any snaps taken of the crew after Charlie joined us at the unit, and as you possibly have never seen any of us, I am enclosing two snaps for your mother. One was taken at ATU in April 1943 and shows “Mac” the rear gunner, Jack Billington the wireless operator, myself, David Carpenter the pilot and Jim Waterman the navigator.
Neither David Browne, the midupper Gunner, nor Charlie, was with us at that time. The other snap is of my wife, son and I after being repatriated. If you could spare me a snap of Charlie, I would be extremely grateful.
Thank you for your good wishes and kind invitiation [sic] and if I get down to your part ot he [sic] counry [sic] I will certainly avail myself of it.
Yours sincerely
Donald Flett

Dear Mrs Warner,
I was indeed sorry to have to advise you that your Son, 1801861 Sgt Warner C.H.A. is missing from Air Operations & it is with sincere sympathy both of myself & entire Squadron that I write you at this time.
Your Son was Flt Engineer in an aircraft that took off on an operational Sortie over enemy territory on the night of the 3-4 Sep 1943. but I regret to say failed to return to base. No messages were recieved [sic] from the aircraft after take off & nothing has been heard of it or any member of the crew. There is always the possibility that they may have come down by parachute or made a forced landing in enemy territory in which case news of this would take a considerable time to come through, but you will be immediatly [sic] advised of any further information
[page break]
that is recieved. [sic]
Your Son has shown great keenness & efficiency in his work during the time he has been with the Squadron & had become a popular member who will be greatly missed here & his duties were always carried out with a fine courage & determination.
The personal effects of your Son are now in the custody of the Committee of Adjustment Office, R.A.F. Station, Ludford Magna, who will shortly be writing to you, concerning their disposal.
I feel most deeply for you at this anxious time & we all join with you in hoping & praying that some good news will eventually come through.
Yours Sincerely
G.A. Carey Foster
Wing Commander Commanding
NO 101 Squadron R.A.F.

Tues.
Dear Mum & Dad,
Well here I am again, feeling quite fit & well & no worse for having done 6 ops. I received your letter to-day. Glad to hear you are both O.K. Hope Mum has a nice time at Aunt Lena's this week.
Well when I wrote before last week I think I told you I'd done 4 ops. The last one being Bochum on Wed. night. Thurs. Friday & Sat we had off.
On Sunday night we went to Kassel, a 7 1/2 hrs. trip. Then again on Monday night (last night) we went to Frankfurt an 8 hr. trip.
Now we have tonight off & perhaps to-morrow as
[page break]
as[sic] well. Both trips to Kassel & Frankfurt were very good. We had no trouble at all. Really tremendous fires were started at both places. Especially at Kassel which seemed to be one huge fire. It was on fire from end to end & a thick pall of smoke thousands of feet high hung over it.
At Frankfurt last night, we saw two or three big explosions, & burning debris was flung high in the air, & the fires there were really tremendous.
We usually carry 2/1000 lbs. bombs & about 5 or 6000 lbs. of incendiares [sic]. The Lancs & Stirlings carry the 4000 & 8000 lb. blockbusters, but they can only take 1 - 8000 lbs.
Last night just before we got to the target a fighter attacked a Halifax just behind us. But the Halifax had seen it & was waiting, and as the fighter closed in we saw the Halifax open up & tracer bullets flew at the fighter. The fighter burst into flames, & went streaking down, when he hit the deck there was a
[page break]
big explosion & flames shot into the air.
We certainly eat some eggs & bacon on ops. One before we go & another when we get back.
[deleted] Well thats [/deleted] Ah.! Thanks for the lucky horseshoe, I'll take it with me in future. We have a mascot. Its a stuffed monkey. We call it Joey & always tie it up in the kite before we go. Jock always wears a purple scarf. But personally [sic] I'm not superstitious. If you want to come back every time, then keep your eyes skinned & do your job well. That'll bring you back, not the lucky mascots. But our skipper is really top-notch. He keeps us on tip-toe all the time we're out. Consequently no fighter has ever got near us before we've seen him, & we're well away in no time, & they never see us.
Had a letter from Betty to-day. She seems quite O.K. Also had one from Sam. He's at Barrow in Furness, but he's held up because the dockyard workers are on strike.
[page break]
Well thats about all for now. Will write again about Friday. So cheerio until then,
All my very best love,
Ally [three rows of kisses]

Requires

Jim joined the RAF in July 1940 on his 18th birthday. His ‘Flight’ was sent to the US to train under the ‘Arnold scheme’. He went to a variety of bases to learn to fly (detained in 1st interview), flying the PT17 Stearman biplane, BT-13A, AT-6A Harvard, Vultee-13, and then the Armstrong Siddeley, before returning on the Queen Elizabeth as a newly commissioned pilot with the rank of Sergeant.
On returning to the UK, he was posted to RAF Shawbury (Shropshire) Advance Flying Unit. Jim’s next posting was to RAF Tilstock Heath where he ‘crewed up’. Complete with crew he arrived at RAF Sleap (an auxiliary station for RAF Tilstock Heath). On being asking if they would be willing to join the Pathfinder Force all agreed to accept the offer – PFF was elite after all. After HCU training at RAF Blyton je stated, ‘The Lancaster was the finest plane I’ve ever flown’. On 26th July 1943 Jim was promoted to Flight Sergeant.
He remembered the RAF casualties and how their work affected their mental state, particularly the Squadron Casualties. However, the awareness that they were regularly striking at the heart to Nazi Germany left the with an enduring pride in being a ‘Armada’.
Jim and his crew transferred to RAF Upwood – Pathfinder Navigation Training Unit then to RAF Bourne 97.
Jim flew to bomb Nuremberg, München Gladbach, Berlin itself many times, Montlucon Dunlop rubber factory in France, and the Modane Tower Tunnel in France. He was involved in 2 flights that were ‘Boomerang flights’. One of the October operations was to be part of the decoy flight that was to draw fighters away from Kessel onto themselves, and bomb Frankfurt.
In November 1943 they were judged to be a competent part of the PFF and were tasked to be a back-up marker crew – the ones with the GREEN flares.
They flew to Dusseldorf, Manheim and Berlin. On 24 November 1943 they were hit by flak, managed to survive, became a POW until he was liberated on 3rd May 1945.
On 6th October 1945 he reported to No 34 Maintenance Unit at RAF Montford Bridge. A year later he had refresher course at Moreton-in-the-Marsh, as a Warrant Officer.
In 1948 Jim joined the City of Lincoln, Lincoln Squadron Bomber Command at RAF Waddington. He left Waddington to join the RAF Central Flying School as a flying instructor which he found very rewarding when he sent a pupil solo. Jim tried for a permanent commission while posted to RAF Ternhill but failed because he was tone deaf. Jim was offered a branch commission at the age of 37.
He left RAF as Flight Lieutenant on 19th July 71. He had no regrets about serving in the RAF and was a part of the Shrewsbury RAFA and the Shropshire Aircrew.
