Dear Mum
Once again we are at sea & have now settled down to the last part of our journey, in the last letter which I will post with this one I told you about the wonderful time we had in New York. Did you get the packet containing stockings, and four letters that I posted in New York? I hope the letters were not cut about too much by the Censor.
At the moment we are once again experiencing the cold weather and have dragged out our Blue uniforms to wear. We are still doing the same old things on board as we did when we left Australia, cards are still the favourite past-time, [sic] numerous new games have been introduced since leaving New York. Jig-Saw puzzles have increased in popularity, one puzzle took a couple of chaps 17 1/2 hours solid work to get out, needless to say it has only been done the once so far.
The deck competitions have started again, and as usual “yours faithfully” manages to reach the semi finals and no further; this time we had a few allies to play against & it caused quite a bit of excitement as the Boys looked upon the Competitions as International Games, Australia came out as the Champions; if I had listened to Father Spillane a bit better at school I might have got on much better with one of my opponents, however I managed reasonably well
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
Today the 26th I did the usual which is precisely nothing, I slept in until 12 oclock [sic] getting up just in time for dinner; after dinner [deleted] we [/deleted] [inserted] I [/inserted] had a couple of hours watch, and I froze all the time even though I had two sweaters, a uniform jacket, a sheepskin vest and an overcoat on. At present the weather is bitterly cold with fogs & mists, I think we have said “Goodbye” to the sun for sometime.
Tonight a few of the Boys are arranging another Concert to be held in a few days time, if it is half as good as the first one, it ought to be a soaring success.
Yesterday I wrapped up a pile of papers, including the last Concert Programme to be sent home to you at the first opportunity, most of it might be rubbish but there might be something of interest amongst it.
The meals of late have been fair, to a newcomer they would be excellent, but to us after having the same old thing for weeks on end they are becoming quite tasteless; now and again we get a little fruit, I think that will be one thing I will miss most at our destination.
It’s taken me nine days to write this much Mum and I am sure it must be very uninteresting, every day we do the same old things and there is nothing new to write about so I had better sign off. This is the eleventh letter I have written to you, number ten is written on Air Force Club Paper about New York, let me know if you have received all letters up till date, if one is short I might be able to let you know what it is about as I have kept a note of letters & the approx time I wrote them.
Well Mum I will end this rot don’t worry your head over me! I am in the best of health and hope you & Vincent are too
Your loving Son & Brother

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Your letter 67 arrived together with a delightful photo of Frances (one of the best yet) & a sombre one of you but very lovely all the same. These are a real joy to me. It is agonising to read of your heroic yet vain struggles for a house. How I admire your courage & energy – while deploring my uselessness!! Don’t worry too much, please. If you can’t get anything retire with your people until my liberation (in 194- ??) I shan’t be numbering my mail in future but will write 6 times a month on each date that is a multiple of 5 so that you will know if any are missing. I have yours to No 68. Life is very dull here but as I seem to have found a permanent fiddle room (potato cellar) the time passes somehow. Best of luck re house
& fondest love, for ever
John.

Dear Mr Madgett,
Thank you for your letter, but I was sorry to receive the news it contained. It’s doubly tough considering Hedley had nearly completed his tour. There is quite a good chance of him having baled out, and I do hope you’ll give me any further news you receive.
I feel there’s very little I can say, but I’m certain you’ll understand.
Please give Mrs Madgett my kind regards.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
I am,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
I feel I must write to you in connection with the announcement in the Sidcup Times of the 20th inst; respecting your son. We in the Squadron, were all very much interested in your son’s welfare, as he was the first of our Cadets to leave the unit for the Service, we were able to accord him a welcome when he returned to visit us from Canada, we were all the more heartened to know that he had been decorated with the D.F.M. and promoted to commissioned rank, but it is with sincere regret that we now learn that he is posted missing.
We shall share your anxiety, and hope sincerely that better tidings will soon reach us, that he is safe and sound, although a prisoner of war.
It was my pleasure to journey down from Town with him when he was last on leave, and I was very much impressed with his enthusiasm for his job.
I trust you will be given strength to bear up under your great trial, and that you may receive better news of Hedley is the sincere wish of all in No 1227 Squadron.
Yours very sincerely

My dear Madgett.
While in town todayon a visit during leave, I heard that your son is “reported missing”, and I would like to convey to you and your wife my sincere sympathy in the deep anxiety you must be experiencing. I do most fervently hope you will soon hear good news that he is safe.
I also understand that he has just been awarded the D.F.M. and it is extra hard that at a time which should be full of happiness and rejoicing, is so full of anxiety.
Please do not worry about answering this letter.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely.

25.8.43.
Dear Mum and Dad,
Thanks for the two letters received in the last week.
I’m extremely sorry to hear the bad news about Hedley and only hope he’s OK and a prisoner.
It seems such hard luck coming down on his last op, but knowing him, he’s sure to be alright. When I first read the news, I decided to get into the R.A.F., but on second thoughts I’ll do that if anything has happened to him – just by way of getting a bit of my own back.
[page break]
By the way, I wont be home for four weeks as I said – I got the dates mixed up. It’ll only be a week – Sep. 17 to Sep. 27.
Had a letter from Nell last week – not much news – and I suppose I’ll have to reply soon.
The German wireless said that Lincoln had been flattened in that raid you mentioned last week but in fact, we only heard one plane, no bombs and no guns, so you can see what twisters they are.
Thanks very much for the second lot of apples and peas, only one of
[page break]
which was bad, and thanks also for the chocolate.
I am enclosing the insurance form for the motor bike, and as you say, I wont be insuring it any more, - well, for a good while anyway.
Well, I think that’s all for now so I’ll bid adieu,
Peter
P.S. Tell Mum to cheer up – he’ll be okay.

Dear Robert,
It was with sincere regret that I read in todays Telegraph the notice about Hedley and I felt that I must drop you a line.
At a time like this I’m afraid that words fail me to express my thoughts, but I do trust that you will have good news very soon.
We had a similar case here at the office when one of our staff heard from her sister that she had received news that her husband
[page break]
was missing after operations over Italy, then in a fortnights time they had news he was safe.
You may remember the case of a Halifax crew being pick up in the Mediterranean after being nine days afloat well he was one of them. So there is always hope and I see in this mornings paper that a certain number of bombers have come down in Sweden, so let’s hope there is a chance in that [indecipherable 2 words] you will know he is safe.
Well Robert I do hope for the best and shall be pleased to have any news
With kind regards
Yours very sincerely

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett
Will you allow my wife & I to express our heartfelt sympathy with you in your agony of suspense.
I know your son & recognise him as one of the nicest & brightest lads of our staff. It seems only recently I was congratulating him on becoming a sergeant pilot, and I had no idea that he had been awarded the
[page break]
D.F.M. or had taken a commission. Your son was contempory with my own son at Harker’s and the news that your boy was missing and mine had given his all in Sicily, arrived on the same day.
I pray the you may soon have news, good news, of your gallant boy.
Sincerely,
[signature]
