24:8:1943.
My Dearest Mother, Only one letter from you since last writing, June 15TH, but as I know you write regularly they should come through, in time. I was rather amused at what you had to say at Anthony’s remarks about Miss Chris Knowles. It does seem bad us grumbling at voluntary work for us but his opinion is really quite general here. Very likely it is the people who receive her orders for things for prisoners who are responsible for sending us poor literature etc. I don’t know if I will have lost my “amiable disposition” that you mention, but Im [sic] sure that we cannot help changing a lot after two years confinement. I think we mostly become more quiet as I’ve notice that, and rowdy fellows are not really very popular. They get on ones nerves so I do think that we become more tolerant. It’s the only way to get along living in the same room with the same fellows doing the same thing day after day & month after month. That’s why I like a change of camp because there’s a change of scenery & for the first few days a new place is comparatively delightful because of new things to look at. I don’t think I’ll be moved again before the end of the war. One cant help getting depressed at times but we derive a certain amount of satisfaction even from the German news these days & new prisoners are our only source of home news. This letter sounds like complaining the whole time, but I didn’t mean it that way. Only I know you’re interested in what this is like. However I should think the effects will wear off with time & seeing you all again in peace. Much love, dear Mother. Donald

Tuesday 24–8–43
Dear Folks,
I am here for about a week after all, but do not write here, as it is not worth while. We get three height tests here, in special chambers & get 4 hours [deleted] kit [/deleted] rest in between. We get nothing between Thursday evening & Monday evening, so I shall probably come home on an early train leaving Friday morning & getting to Bristol about 4 o’clock, if the fare is not too much. I can go back Monday morning so I shan’t lose any sleep.
I seem to have lost all my shirts except the one I’m wearing. Did I leave them home? I’ve bought a British shirt to go on with (I had to buy a couple sometime anyway.
I’ve met two old I.T.W pals of mine here (at Harrogate).
[page break]
Dave Park & Alan Harris. Both sergeants & Both going on single day fighters Very lucky Apparently Texas (where Alan was) wasn’t very different from the prairie after all, except that they were near Dallas which is a rather nice place. I went to the flicks with Dave on Sunday & saw [deleted] clad [/deleted] Jack Hulbert & Cicely Courtneidge in “Take my Tip” & Kay Kyser & John Barrymore in another Very good
I’ve seen no sign of Denis yet so presumably he hadn’t arrived when I left.
I suppose I shall be going back to Harrogate next Tuesday
Much Love
Terry

B and BE Shops.
24th August, 1943.
[Underlined] Cleaning [/underlined] Is satisfactorily carried out on all details, assemblies, and components with turpentine substitute or thinners.
[Underlined] Drying [/underlined] There are now very few small details passing through the paint shop, and therefore drying racks are not in use.
[Underlined] Components. [/underlined] Markings are well carried out to A.V. Roe’s approved drawings. Aileron structures are stripped and a coat of dope resisting paint to Specification 3X4 is applied prior to fabric covering.
[Underlined] Remarks. [/underlined] A number of batch numbers, taken from paint drums now in use were satisfactorily traced back to their respective release notes. A good standard of workmanship is being maintained generally, and parts examined were found to be free from flaking and to have a good even finish.

NO. 75 (NZ) Squadron,
R.A.F. Station,
MEPAL,
Near Ely, Cambs.,
Ref:- 75 NZ / 089/CAS. August 24th. 1943.
Dear Mrs. Bain,
I find it a grievous task indeed for me to write a letter such as this. During your husband’s stay with my Squadron, which proved all too short, he had become extremely popular amongst all ranks for his cheerfulness, willingness and quiet confidence. He had amply proved himself to be a most skilful air-bomber, one whom the Squadron and the Service can ill afford to lose.
On this fateful eleventh operational flight, the crew of which he was a member were detailed to attack a strongly defended target situated deep into German territory, but after the aircraft left base no further signal was received from it. Knowing however, the efficiency of this crew, who worked well together as a team, and that their Captain was an extremely skilful and prudent pilot who did not take unnecessary risks, I feel we may yet learn during the course of the next few weeks that they are all safe and well as prisoners of war. Any news which comes through will be forwarded to you without delay.
In the meantime, all your husband’s personal effects have been carefully listed, packed and despatched to the Central Committee of Adjustment, Colnbrook, Slough. They will be forwarded to you from there after certain formalities have been completed.
The whole of my Squadron joins with me in expression of deepest sympathy to you, during this time of sorrow and anxious waiting. We pray with you for his safety and well being.
Yours sincerely,

14th January, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Bain,
We are writing to tell you of a report which has recently reached us through the International Red Cross Committee concerning a member of the crew with whom your husband, Sergeant A. Bain 658930, was flying.
The Organisation at Geneva has now forwarded an Official German statement that Warrant Officer Fear was laid to rest in the Garrison Cemetery at Doberitz, Germany.
From the records that reach us, we are able to tell you that it is usual for our enemies to bury members of one crew near to one another, so that the name of this cemetery may actually convey news of the last resting place of your husband.
When an official statement regarding him comes through you will be notified without fail either by the Air Ministry or by ourselves. We believe, however, that you would wish to receive this report, which we are accordingly forwarding.
With our renewed sympathy.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs Bain,
We deeply regret that you will by now have heard from the Air Ministry that your husband, Sergeant A. Bain, 658930, has been posted Missing, believed killed in Action, and we should like to offer you the deep sympathy of all in this Department.
The report that your husband and all the members of his crew lost their lives on the 24th August, [inserted] 1943, [/inserted] was sent to the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva in an official German statement.
Further enquires are being made about your husband’s death and place of burial, and you will be notified without delay when any information reaches the Air Ministry or ourselves.
Many answers are being received to enquiries of this kind, but we are afraid that they often take several months to come through.
With again our deepest sympathy, yours sincerely,
