Dear Mrs. Wynn
I believe that your husband Sgt. [Sergeant] Wynn was a member of my son’s crew when they failed to return on the night of 25th to 26th May last. My son was Squadron Leader P.R. Turgel D.F.C. & was piloting the plane on that raid. I am anxious, as probably you are also, to gain any possible information I can about him or any member of his crew, so I am writing to the next of kin,
[page break]
in the hopes, that if we keep in touch with each other, we may be able to help one and other by passing on any information about any members of the crew even if not our own. I should be more than grateful if you would write to me & let me know if & when you have any news of your husband.
At present all the information I have is that two members of the crew have been reported killed P/O Petts & P/O Russell & one other as yet unidentified, that leaves four, of which there is still no news, and
[page break]
there is every possibility that your husband and my son may be amongst these. The above information I was able to get last week from the relatives [sic] department of the R.A.F. I am now writing to the searches department of the Red Cross to ask if they can trace any member of the crew who might be in hospital and if you have not already done this perhaps you would like me to let you know if I hear anything.
May I offer you my deepest sympathy during these anxious days.
Yours sincerely
Fanny M Turgel

My dear Amy & Bob,
We were all very sorry indeed to hear that Hedley is missing and although I was speaking on the phone my mind was all in a whirl and could not say all that I would have liked.
In writing, I only wish to say that we quite realise your feelings and only hope and trust that the worst of your fears may be unfounded.
It is hard I know to be brave under such a cloud, but as quite a number of our boys have turned up after being reported missing, there is still a shred of hope that Hedley has landed somewhere.
Bear up bravely. There may be a silver lining to the dark cloud which overshadows you.
Again I say we are truly sorry and pray
[page break]
that you you will be given sufficient strength to carry you through.
Your loving brother,

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the news contained in my telegram.
Your Son was Pilot of a crew detailed to attack a target in North West Germany on the night of 17/18th August. Nothing was heard of the aircraft after take-off, though this is quite usual as wireless silence is maintained for security reasons. While some aircraft were seen to be shot down, there is nothing known which can reasonably be connected with the non-return of this particular aircraft, and unfortunately it usually takes some months for news to reach us from German authorities, though the Red Cross do all they can to hasten it.
There is always the chance that the crew were able to escape by parachute and this will be our earnest hope through the an[two missing letters]ous period of waiting.
In view of the many requests we receive I would like to add that we cannot divulge the names and addresses of the relatives of the remainder of the crew, but I am sure you will understand our position in this respect and not feel we are keeping anything back.

The loss of your Son on what would have been his last operational sortie of this tour, has [deleted] sh [/deleted] shocked all in the Squadron. We were highly delighted yesterday to hear he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for he had certainly merited it, while it reflected gre[missing letters] credit on the Squadron.
Your Son was one of our outstanding Pilots and Captain's [sic] and had done a grand job of work while with us. He was extremely popular with all ranks, and his ground crew in particular would do anything for him.
He will be so very much missed, but it is our earnest hope that good news will follow soon.

RAF BOMB NAZI RESEARCH H.Q.
Big Raid: 41 Missing
Aircraft of Bomber Command last night made a heavy attack in bright moonlight on the research and development establishment at Peenemunde, 60 miles north-west of Stettin, stated an Air Ministry communique this afternoon.
It added: “The establishment is the largest and most important of its kind in Germany. First reports indicate that aircraft were encountered along the route. Several of these were destroyed.
“Mosquitoes bombed objective in Berlin.
“Fighter Command Intruders carried our many attacks on airfields and railway targets in France, the low countries and North-West Germany. Four enemy aircraft were destroyed.
“Forty-one bombers and one fighter are missing”
PRECISION ATTACKS The attack on Peenemunde was made under conditions approximating daylight, and should be considered in conjunction with the United Stated attacked on Schweinfurt and Regensburg.
All were precision attacks on special objectives of outstanding importance in the air war.
The Peenemunde is on the Baltic coast, in the Bay of Pomerania, and had not been attacked before.
Distance there and back is about 1,200 miles, some 100 miles farther that the double journey which a raid on Berlin entails.
Swiss radio said that warnings were sounded on the districts of Como and Milan but no bombs were dropped.
The Italian communique stated that a formation of four-engined bombers lost three aircraft over Northern Italy.

R.A.F. Hit New Vital Target
BOMBER COMMAND LAST NIGHT MADE A HEAVEY ATTACK ON A NEW AND VITAL TARGET – GERMANY’S LARGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHMENT.
This is at Pennemunde, on the Baltic coast, 60 miles north-west of Stettin. It had not been raided before.
The attack was made in bright moonlight – so bright that conditions approximated to daylight.
“First reports indicated that the attack was well concentrated, say an Air Ministry communique.
“A great number of enemy aircraft were encounters “Several of these were destroyed
“Mosquitoes bombed objective on Berlin.
“Fighter command intruders carried out many attacks on air fields and railways targets in France, the Low Countries and North-West Germany.
“Four enemy aircraft were destroyed. 41 bombers and one fighter are missing.”
This is the heaviest loss Bomber Command have borne since the night of June 21, when 44 were lost on a heave attack on Krefeld.
The attack should be considered in conjunction with the United States raids yesterday on Schweinfurt and Regensburg. All were precision blows at special objectives of outstanding importance.
The Peenemunde establishment deals with high grade development work on aircraft, radiolocation and armament.
There were also raid alerts in Northern Italy last night, for the fourth successive night, but there has been no report of any attack by home-based bombers.
