Dear Robert,
I have just heard by telephone from the office, of your anxiety regarding your son & should like to convey my sympathy with you and his mother. Until you get the final report there is of course the hope, if ever such a slender one, that he may have survived, but I expect, in your heart, you are really hoping to hear that he passed out instantly, rather than he fell into enemy hands & probably in a badly wounded condition.
That was a terrific fight in which he was engaged & one cannot but admire his bravery in volunteering to enter into it.
I expect you know that I have not been active in Tooley St. for nearly five years. I get nowhere beyond my garden (in which I am wheeled in an invalid chair!)
Hope you are keeping as well as possible under existing conditions. Has your business been badly affected by the war? I hope not, but, as you know, it has properly upset Tooley St.
My sister joins in kindest remembrances & sympathy.
Your sincerely,
W. C. Green

Dear Robert,
It was with sincere regret that I read in todays Telegraph the notice about Hedley and I felt that I must drop you a line.
At a time like this I’m afraid that words fail me to express my thoughts, but I do trust that you will have good news very soon.
We had a similar case here at the office when one of our staff heard from her sister that she had received news that her husband
[page break]
was missing after operations over Italy, then in a fortnights time they had news he was safe.
You may remember the case of a Halifax crew being pick up in the Mediterranean after being nine days afloat well he was one of them. So there is always hope and I see in this mornings paper that a certain number of bombers have come down in Sweden, so let’s hope there is a chance in that [indecipherable 2 words] you will know he is safe.
Well Robert I do hope for the best and shall be pleased to have any news
With kind regards
Yours very sincerely

Dear Mr Madgett
I feel I must write to convey to you and your wife my sympathy in your anxiety over your son, & I do trust that you will soon have good news.
You will not know me, but some years ago you were very kind to my husband, who I often heard speak of young ‘Hedley’. I do not know whether you know that my Husband passed away last year, but I am certain had he lived he would have written you himself.
My eldest son has just returned from abroad & my ‘middle’ son has recently been discharged unfit after 2 ½ years service. I am thankful
[page break]
my other little lad is only 8.
Trusting you will soon hear from your dear one,
Believe me,
Yours truly

Dear Mr Madgett,
I was very sorry indeed to hear from one of our Directors that your son Hedley, did not return from a recent raid over Germany.
No doubt he has mentioned working with me when at Harkers & I feel, on that account, I should write to you.
Among the many lads that have passed through my department he was outstanding in [underlined] every [/underlined] respect, and for that reason I feel sure he must be safe.
Meanwhile, I trust your anxiety will soon be relieved with good news of him.
I remain
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Madgett,
Thank you for your letter, but I was sorry to receive the news it contained. It’s doubly tough considering Hedley had nearly completed his tour. There is quite a good chance of him having baled out, and I do hope you’ll give me any further news you receive.
I feel there’s very little I can say, but I’m certain you’ll understand.
Please give Mrs Madgett my kind regards.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
I am,
Yours sincerely,
Bob Grimwade

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett
Will you allow my wife & I to express our heartfelt sympathy with you in your agony of suspense.
I know your son & recognise him as one of the nicest & brightest lads of our staff. It seems only recently I was congratulating him on becoming a sergeant pilot, and I had no idea that he had been awarded the
[page break]
D.F.M. or had taken a commission. Your son was contempory with my own son at Harker’s and the news that your boy was missing and mine had given his all in Sicily, arrived on the same day.
I pray the you may soon have news, good news, of your gallant boy.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
I feel I must write to you in connection with the announcement in the Sidcup Times of the 20th inst; respecting your son. We in the Squadron, were all very much interested in your son’s welfare, as he was the first of our Cadets to leave the unit for the Service, we were able to accord him a welcome when he returned to visit us from Canada, we were all the more heartened to know that he had been decorated with the D.F.M. and promoted to commissioned rank, but it is with sincere regret that we now learn that he is posted missing.
We shall share your anxiety, and hope sincerely that better tidings will soon reach us, that he is safe and sound, although a prisoner of war.
It was my pleasure to journey down from Town with him when he was last on leave, and I was very much impressed with his enthusiasm for his job.
I trust you will be given strength to bear up under your great trial, and that you may receive better news of Hedley is the sincere wish of all in No 1227 Squadron.
Yours very sincerely

My dear Madgett.
While in town todayon a visit during leave, I heard that your son is “reported missing”, and I would like to convey to you and your wife my sincere sympathy in the deep anxiety you must be experiencing. I do most fervently hope you will soon hear good news that he is safe.
I also understand that he has just been awarded the D.F.M. and it is extra hard that at a time which should be full of happiness and rejoicing, is so full of anxiety.
Please do not worry about answering this letter.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely.

Dear Robert,
As I have not heard from you again I presume it means you have received no further news regarding your son. I wish you could have heard, as meanwhile you are naturally in a state of anxiety, as is also, I am sure, his mother.
I hope she and you are keeping as well as times will allow.
My sisters are fairly

well, but have had a rather strenuous time lately, with workmen in the house for the past fortnight repairing walls & ceilings & repapering after damage (cracks etc) caused by a 2000lb bomb dropped near here in October. We are fortunate to have escaped so lightly. About 300 houses in Hayes were damaged that night, but miraculously there were no deaths & only about a dozen minor injuries.
I was sorry to see by your letter of Aug. 23rd that you had had pretty bad damage to your house. I suppose the great thing to be thankful
[page break]
For in both our cases is that we suffered no personal injuries.
I am still prisoner here & seem to see no hope of release. I was able to sit about in the garden during the summer, but of course that has stopped the past two months & I must be content indoors until the weather warms up again.
The war is, I feel, is progressing very promisingly but think we have a long fight ahead yet, though I think there is good chance

of 1944 seeing the end so far as Europe is concerned. May it be so & the earlier the better!
With best wishes from us all to you and yours
Yours sincerely,
W. C. Green

Dear Mr Madgett,
Thank you for your letter and all it contained. While there is no definite news there is always a chance & I very much hope something good is heard soon.
I’d very much like to pop over and see you some time in the future, maybe on my next leave, and I’ll certainly give you a ring beforehand.
I’m afraid we aren’t on the phone here. The march of time doesn’t apply to Hornchurch.
Thanking you again,
Yours sincerely,
