25th August 1943.
My dear Madgett.
While in town todayon a visit during leave, I heard that your son is “reported missing”, and I would like to convey to you and your wife my sincere sympathy in the deep anxiety you must be experiencing. I do most fervently hope you will soon hear good news that he is safe.
I also understand that he has just been awarded the D.F.M. and it is extra hard that at a time which should be full of happiness and rejoicing, is so full of anxiety.
Please do not worry about answering this letter.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely.

Dear Robert,
As I have not heard from you again I presume it means you have received no further news regarding your son. I wish you could have heard, as meanwhile you are naturally in a state of anxiety, as is also, I am sure, his mother.
I hope she and you are keeping as well as times will allow.
My sisters are fairly

well, but have had a rather strenuous time lately, with workmen in the house for the past fortnight repairing walls & ceilings & repapering after damage (cracks etc) caused by a 2000lb bomb dropped near here in October. We are fortunate to have escaped so lightly. About 300 houses in Hayes were damaged that night, but miraculously there were no deaths & only about a dozen minor injuries.
I was sorry to see by your letter of Aug. 23rd that you had had pretty bad damage to your house. I suppose the great thing to be thankful
[page break]
For in both our cases is that we suffered no personal injuries.
I am still prisoner here & seem to see no hope of release. I was able to sit about in the garden during the summer, but of course that has stopped the past two months & I must be content indoors until the weather warms up again.
The war is, I feel, is progressing very promisingly but think we have a long fight ahead yet, though I think there is good chance

of 1944 seeing the end so far as Europe is concerned. May it be so & the earlier the better!
With best wishes from us all to you and yours
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr Madgett,
Thank you for your letter and all it contained. While there is no definite news there is always a chance & I very much hope something good is heard soon.
I’d very much like to pop over and see you some time in the future, maybe on my next leave, and I’ll certainly give you a ring beforehand.
I’m afraid we aren’t on the phone here. The march of time doesn’t apply to Hornchurch.
Thanking you again,
Yours sincerely,

(Casualty Branch),
73-77, OXFORD STREET, W.1.
Your Ref.P. 407611/1/P.4.B.6
6th January, 1944.
Sir,
With reference to the letter from this department dated 5th September 1943, I am directed to inform you with deep regret that all efforts to trace your son, Pilot Officer H. RR. Madgett have proved unavailing.
In view of the lapse of time, it is felt that there can now be little hope of his being alive, but action to presume that he has lost his life will not be taken until at least six months from the date on which he was reported missing.
Such action will then be for official purposes only, and you will be duly informed.
Meanwhile I am to assure you, with the sincere sympathy of the department, that all possible enquiries will continue to be made.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Pilot Officer Hedley Robert Madgett, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 17/18th August, 1943, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out for action and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.

Dear Mr. Madgett,
We feel you should know of some very grave news which has reached us about a member of the crew in which your son, Pilot Officer H.R. Madgett, No.147519, was serving when he was posted as Missing.
A telegram from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva states that the body of Pilot Officer Lewis was recovered on the shore, but no locality was given. We fear that this report must indicate that the disaster to the aircraft most probably occurred over the sea.
We are continuing to make enquiries on your behalf, and need hardly say that should any news come through about your son, it will be at once communicated to you.
Please accept our very sincere sympathy in this period of prolonged anxiety and suspense.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill
Chairman.

Dear Mrs Madgett.
Helen and I were quite excited this morning when we read in the ‘Kentish Mercury’ of the well deserved honour bestowed on Hedley. I am sure Mr Madgett and yourself must be very proud of your brave son and we congratulate both Hedley and you most sincerely.
I saw Mrs Parkin last week, and she was telling me how well Hedley was doing and that he was a born airman. May he be kept safe! You must have many an anxious moment about him.
[page break]
I hope Peter won’t have to go. The war certainly looks as if it might end sooner than we think.
Hearty congratulations and best wishes & good luck to Hedley in his future operations.
I am,
Yours sincerely,
J.G. Grey
P.S. Mrs Parkins has just rung up to say that Hedley is missing. I am [underlined] so [/underlined] sorry, and do hope that you will have some good news soon. J.G.G.

My dear Mrs. Madgett,
Words are so futile at a time like this, but I felt I wanted you to know that my thoughts are with you.
I'm so awfully glad I met Hedley, in fact was proud to meet him. I have no children & am therefore so very grateful
[page break]
to you "Mothers & Boys" who are doing the job for us.
But, dear, don't give up hope. There are so many cases where parents have heard from their sons after quite a long interval. So much could have happened. There will be many of us who will hope & pray with you.
My sincere & loving thoughts & wishes,
Yours very sincerely,
O.W. Burnard.

Dear Mrs Madgett,
I didn't write to you before, because I though letters [deleted] like [/deleted] like these would be very harrowing to you, but as I see in the local paper you have acknowledged others, may I just tell you that you have been continually in my thought, with sincerest sympathy ever since we first heard that Hedly [sic] was missing
Am sure that all your [missing letters]iends hope with you that good news is still to come. Keep a stout heart, brave little mother, & remember only that your boy is one of Englands heroes
With love from
Isabel. Q. Pead.

Dear Mrs Madgett,
Thank you for your letter received on 27th. It was with regret we read of you experiencing such an anxious period as we have just passed through but trust it will have as happy an ending. It is certainly the most wonderful news for parents to receive just when doubts has arisen.
Our boy was not in the same raid as your boy, as he was reported missing 30th – 31st Aug., over the Rhineland. We feel very fortunate as 4 of his crew were presumed killed
[page break]
(2)
at 3 months, at least, think it must have been more definite news as one poor mother was notified her son was buried in Holland, we have not heard about the others. We can and do feel very much for the parents, however 3 of the crew are alive. We advise you to have every hope as apparently all sorts of things happen there these days & boys are turning up after indefinite periods, in fact when we notified the Air Ministry we had heard, the official informed us 1 boy actually turned up after 18 months, he had not been able to get a word through. They must have an official time for presuming
[page break]
(3)
As there would be such chaos otherwise, it does not prove that there is no hope, although one tends to think so at the time. We think you have every chance of hearing good news in the near future. We certainly hope so & should be very pleased to hear from you to that effect. When it comes it will seem like a dream, and no doubt take a time to realise. Once more thanking you for writing.
Alice Robb.

5 October 1943
Dear Mrs. Madgett:
In the mail today I received a letter from Rosemary with the news that Hedley is missing in action.
This brave and intrepid boy deserves a full life and our prayers will be added to yours that he has been able to make a safe descent, even though in the hands of the enemy.
Your son was our guest in our home at Ann Arbor, Michigan in February of last year. He was a fine looking, wholesome clean cut lad with high ideals and he made such a good impression upon us all. He was eager to get to England and in the skies against the Jerries and we all admired his dauntless spirit.
We in America realize how much we owe to your son and the gallant sons of many other British mothers. It is our determination that this time we shall see this thing through to the end that the next generation of our boys do not have to do this again.
We are happy to have known Hedley. He brought an inspiration into our lives when we needed it. His heroism will cause us to redouble our efforts in whatever our tasks may be in this deadly war.
May God strengthen and sustain you.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
I do hope you will excuse my writing these few lines to you & sincere sympathy during your anxiety, I do have the same anxiety, as my son Sgt Souter was mid upper gunner to your son and was also doing his last trip.
I have met your son on three or four occasions at Kings Cross and thought what a fine confident lad, and on the last occasion to see him Pilot Officer and how all the crew cheered him aloud when they see him arrive at Kings Cross quite an exciting few minutes we all had together, we can now only look forward to hearing good news of them in the near future, if its only that they are prisoners of war, we shall look forward to seeing them one day
[page break]
If you should hear any news of your son it would be my greatest pleasure to hear from you, or should I hear any news I would gladly inform you.
Trusting these few lines find you safe and confident
I remain Yours
Sincerely
D Souter

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
Please pardon my not answering your letter before, but I thought I would wait until I had paid another visit to Ernie, which I did last Thursday, hoping that on my return I might be able to tell you and all his friends that he would turn the “corner”.
The matron told me there is only a miracle can save him, and if his chest and heart rally, he will be confined to bed for the rest of his life as he will be paralysed from the waist downwards. He is conscious and can talk rationally to you, but is only fed on fluids. He has chest trouble, which I suspect is pneumonia, although they wont tell me, but he is in a private ward with a Sister Nurse in constant attention, and they spare no effort to see that he is comfortable. He is in plaster-of-paris
[page break]
from head to toe – my poor boy.
I’m going to see him again on Thursday, as I am allowed a free warrant each visit.
I hope I haven’t distressed you with such a harrowing description of my dear son’s state, and I’m praying so hard that the Peace that can only prevent such a terrible life long misery will be given to him. He is so young to be cruelly made to suffer, and to see lying so helpless and I can’t do anything to help him, tears my heart to pieces.
Would to God this terrible war would end, and so save this massacre of young lives.
I sincerely hope that you will hear news of poor Hedley. Don’t give up hope – cling to the last shred and perhaps you may hear before long, at least, I pray you do.
I will give your best wishes to Ernie when I see him, and if you write don’t mention how serious things are with him as he does not know. It would be too great a shock to kill him.
With my best wishes for the coming year, and may it bring better news of Hedley.
I remain
yours most sincerely,
Dorothy Richlings

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the news contained in my telegram.
Your Son was Pilot of a crew detailed to attack a target in North West Germany on the night of 17/18th August. Nothing was heard of the aircraft after take-off, though this is quite usual as wireless silence is maintained for security reasons. While some aircraft were seen to be shot down, there is nothing known which can reasonably be connected with the non-return of this particular aircraft, and unfortunately it usually takes some months for news to reach us from German authorities, though the Red Cross do all they can to hasten it.
There is always the chance that the crew were able to escape by parachute and this will be our earnest hope through the an[two missing letters]ous period of waiting.
In view of the many requests we receive I would like to add that we cannot divulge the names and addresses of the relatives of the remainder of the crew, but I am sure you will understand our position in this respect and not feel we are keeping anything back.

The loss of your Son on what would have been his last operational sortie of this tour, has [deleted] sh [/deleted] shocked all in the Squadron. We were highly delighted yesterday to hear he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for he had certainly merited it, while it reflected gre[missing letters] credit on the Squadron.
Your Son was one of our outstanding Pilots and Captain's [sic] and had done a grand job of work while with us. He was extremely popular with all ranks, and his ground crew in particular would do anything for him.
He will be so very much missed, but it is our earnest hope that good news will follow soon.

The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.

Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or circumstances of the casualty, or the unit.

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
It was most kind of you to write us so soon after reading of our sad bereavement. As you say it is only when the same tragedy has touched oneself that the true significance of it can be realised, my wife and I send our heartfelt sympathy to you both.
Since receiving your letter this evening we have been looking through Bill’s album & have found quite a few snaps of Hedley, he looked a real happy laddie and by the snaps they seemed to be having a grand time, Bill often spoke of him.
Bill was reported missing on June 21st-22nd after a raid on Krefeld in Germany, 700 planes took part that night
[page break]
& 43 didn’t come back.
We received word from the Air Ministry that the Lancaster had been found , all the crew had been killed, four were recognisable (one of them Bill) two unrecognisable and one missing, they are all accounted for now but we are still anxiously awaiting to hear of the burial place.
I have enclosed a snap of Bill taken before he left Canada in September 1942, it is very like him.
Let us hope 1944will see the end of this cruel war and a return to peaceful days.
Yours very sincerely,
James and Helen Girdwood

My Dear Mrs. & Mr. Madgett,
We had been wondering if you have had any more news of your dear boy Hedley. I often think ofg him.
Bill and him had such grand times together in Canada.
Well it is one year since our boy was killed we have never heard were [sic] he was buried or where his plane was brought down. I wish I knew.

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett
Received the cutting out of your local paper I must thank you very much.
You were wondering about my son’s grave, well he is buried in a Military Cemetery Venlo Holland. All the crew are buried there. We are very sorry you have not found out where your dear boy Hedley is buried, we hope you will get news through time.
We have had a big loss our Dear Daughter Helen aged 32 years. She was a Nursing Sister in a Military Hopital, she had a kidney removed and never got over it. She was buried

here in Muirskirk a month ago. This cruel war has taken two of my family but we have got to bear it.
I am not good at writing letters as you will notice My eldest daughter does all the letter writing to save me the trouble.
Thanking both you and Mr Madgett for your kindness,
We remain
Yours sincerely
Mrs. & Mr Jas Girdwood
