Dear Mr. Madgett,
We feel you should know of some very grave news which has reached us about a member of the crew in which your son, Pilot Officer H.R. Madgett, No.147519, was serving when he was posted as Missing.
A telegram from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva states that the body of Pilot Officer Lewis was recovered on the shore, but no locality was given. We fear that this report must indicate that the disaster to the aircraft most probably occurred over the sea.
We are continuing to make enquiries on your behalf, and need hardly say that should any news come through about your son, it will be at once communicated to you.
Please accept our very sincere sympathy in this period of prolonged anxiety and suspense.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill
Chairman.

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
I feel I must write to you in connection with the announcement in the Sidcup Times of the 20th inst; respecting your son. We in the Squadron, were all very much interested in your son’s welfare, as he was the first of our Cadets to leave the unit for the Service, we were able to accord him a welcome when he returned to visit us from Canada, we were all the more heartened to know that he had been decorated with the D.F.M. and promoted to commissioned rank, but it is with sincere regret that we now learn that he is posted missing.
We shall share your anxiety, and hope sincerely that better tidings will soon reach us, that he is safe and sound, although a prisoner of war.
It was my pleasure to journey down from Town with him when he was last on leave, and I was very much impressed with his enthusiasm for his job.
I trust you will be given strength to bear up under your great trial, and that you may receive better news of Hedley is the sincere wish of all in No 1227 Squadron.
Yours very sincerely

RAF Bombers Tricked Enemy by a Berlin False Alarm
NAZI ‘BACKROOM BOYS’ KILLED
Key Men Died Here
[Photograph]
End of a vital German research station. Reconnaissance picture shows Peenemunde after the big R.A.F. raid there. Devastation is enormous, huge craters can be seen all over the area. Forty huts in which radiolocation and other research was done have been destroyed in this section, and another 50 burnt.
Peenemunde Raid Wiped Out Air Experts’ HQ
By COLIN BEDNALL, Daily Mail Air Correspondent
It is considered most likely that numbers of outstanding German scientists and highly skilled technicians were killed in the R.A.F.’s mass attack last week on the previously unheard-of target of Peenemunde.
These men were the sinister, dangerous, and personal foes of every Allied airman who flies over Germany. The enemy cannot replace them.
They were essentially combatants, with normal military uniforms and rankings, but they fought with deadly radiolocation and other instruments produced and often operated many miles from the scene of combat.
Until the R.A.F. descended on Peenemunde, they hunted our airmen with little risk to themselves. The plans for the attack had these “backroom boys” very much in mind.
The first hint of their success was given by a German radio announcement the day after the raid that General von Chamier-Glisezenski, inventor of many of Germany’s secret weapons, had met with a “fatal accident.”
If the truth were known, many of his colleagues and subordinates met a similar fate on the night of August 17-18.
Evidence to support this belief is provided by the picture of bomb damage at Peenemunde which appears in this page.
The Vital Point
At first glance it may look no different from any other aerial photograph of bomb damage, but the vital point to observe is the flattening of rows of plain wood and iron huts. They are very large huts.
In them at the time of the raid would be scores of “backroom boys,” either working at their secret devices or resting.
Cut off from the rest of the world and surrounded by thick forest and the sea, the Peenemunde research and radiolocation station was supposed to be beyond prying eyes – especially R.A.F. eyes. It had the appearance of an innocent, over-grown holiday camp.
It would seem probable that many of the scientists were caught at work. As was stated in [italics] The Daily Mail [/italics] after the raid, the big R.A.F. force took a course that probably caused the enemy to anticipate an attack on Berlin.
Wrong Idea
There is every probability that the enemy believed Berlin was to be the target.
The “backroom boys” at Peenemunde would have welcomed this prospect with far more relish than the citizens of the capital because it would have provided them with their finest opportunity ever of testing and experimenting with their secret devices.
Absorbed in their work and without a fear that they – and not Berlin – might be the target for the night, few, if any, would have thought of taking shelter until it was too late.
And no hut is any protection against a British “block buster.”

[underlined] NURSES HAVE TO USE MOSQUITO NETS [/underlined]
Fly Plague Empties a Hospital, 21 Child Patients Ill
By Daily Mail Reporter
TWENTY-ONE children patients and four members of the staff at Watford Isolation Hospital have been affected by dysentery attributed to flies, which swarm in the wards and kitchen. Now only ten patients remain. The rest have been evacuated.
A letter from a sister at the hospital was read at a meeting of Watford Council yesterday. “To attempt to nurse patients, especially cases of infection, under such circumstances is both disgraceful and revolting,” she wrote.
“Until I became a sister at this hospital I considered myself fit and healthy, but although I have only been a member of the staff since October 1942 I have been almost continually under a doctor’s care.
“I attribute this to the fact that I have been working in unhygienic surroundings caused by this pestilence of flies.
“It has become a daily game for the children to count the flies from hour to hour which collect on the fly papers and around the wards, and which it is necessary to change twice daily, and even more often in the kitchen.”
[underlined] STAFF THEORY [/underlined]
I visited the hospital, which is normally capable of taking 140 fever cases, last night. The white-tiled walls had just been washed with disinfectant, but a minute later the flies came back.
The nursing staff are forced to sleep under netting. In the kitchen the cook has had to seal her cupboards.
Through a glass panel I saw one patient constantly flicking the insects away. On another counterpane I counted nearly 100 of them.
Ten fly papers hung from the ceiling of the sterilising room. They had been changed twice before I arrived.
A sister said: “The pests are floating in the water when I go to bathe the children at night.”
A Ministry of Health official has inspected the building and attempts have been made to find the cause of the plague.
The hospital staff have their own theories. They believe the flies come in from refuse pits 30 yards from the building.
[underlined] DANGER TO TOWN [/underlined]
“They have been worrying us for over a year now,” the sister said.
Yet three miles away in Watford High-street the swarms are almost as bad.
The matron of the hospital, who is on holiday, is preparing a full report for the Health Ministry.
“The whole borough might be affected unless something is done,” I was told.
Watford Council passed a resolution yesterday expressing serious concern “with the appalling conditions owing to the excessive number of flies at the hospital and the terrible conditions under which the staff had been endeavouring to carry out their duties for a considerable period of time.”
They instructed the council representatives on the hospital board to do “everything within their power to get this nuisance abated at once.”
‘FOR LUCK’ MEDALS
From Queen Mary
By Daily Mail Reporter
TWO small silver-coloured medallions, slightly bigger than a sixpence, engraved on one side “FROM M.R.” and on the other “FOR LUCK,” are prizes possessions of two R.A.F. aircraftmen stationed in the West Country.
They were presented to them by an elderly lady who gave them a lift in her car. Afterwards they discovered that the lady was Queen Mary.
The aircraftmen were walking into Chippenham, Wilts. to go to a cinema when the car drew up beside them. They accepted the proferred lift.
With Queen Mary in the car – though the men did not know it then – were the Queen’s lady-in-waiting and Lord Claud Hamilton, comptroller of her household.
Queen’s Own Idea
When the car dropped the men an elderly man gave them two small packages wrapped in cellophane.
It was only when a crowd began to gather on the pavements that they realised they had been driving with Queen Mary.
An official at Marlborough House told me yesterday: “The idea of the medallions was entirely Queen Mary’s.
“It is a very small medallion, made of a silver-coloured alloy, and can be hung on a watch-chain or slipped into a pocket. It means just what it says: ‘Good Luck.’”
Flyers Meet RAF Chief

My dear Madgett.
While in town todayon a visit during leave, I heard that your son is “reported missing”, and I would like to convey to you and your wife my sincere sympathy in the deep anxiety you must be experiencing. I do most fervently hope you will soon hear good news that he is safe.
I also understand that he has just been awarded the D.F.M. and it is extra hard that at a time which should be full of happiness and rejoicing, is so full of anxiety.
Please do not worry about answering this letter.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely.

Dear Melisa [?] Madgett,
I received your letter today and I can’t tell you how grieved and shocked I am about Hedley being missing. It just doesn’t seem possible that something has happened to him.
Although Hedley’s and my friendship started through a high school correspondence, I can’t help but feel that it developed into something much more than that. I was so excited when Hedley was able to visit us in America. It’s very needless to say that my whole family fell in love with him from the very beginning because of his politeness, his quick sense of humour and his sweet English ways. That visit is something I will always remember and hold very dear to me, as well as I shall treasure the sweater of his that I love and the silver R.A.F wings he sent me.
I know how proud you must be of him for being such a brave pilot, and for being gallant enough to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.
I’ve thought of Hedley so very much, ever since the day I said goodbye to him live in America and he returned to England. I’m afraid that I thought about him much more than I wrote although I did try to write quite often.
[page break]
Please do not give up hope, Mrs Madgett, we must hope and pray that he is safe. You may know that I shall pray for him – because ever since that first February there’s been a special little spot in my heart reserved for Hedley.
When you do hear, and I pray you shall, that he is safe, I’d be ever so grateful if you would be kind enough to write. I shall be waiting so anxiously, and then too, if possible, I’d like to write to him and send some things.
Please extend my sympathy to Hedley’s father and to his brother, Peter, and God bless you all.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Stapp

U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION
SAN DIEGO. CALIFORNIA
5 October 1943
Dear Mrs. Madgett:
In the mail today I received a letter from Rosemary with the news that Hedley is missing in action.
This brave and intrepid boy deserves a full life and our prayers will be added to yours that he has been able to make a safe descent, even though in the hands of the enemy.
Your son was our guest in our home at Ann Arbor, Michigan in February of last year. He was a fine looking, wholesome clean cut lad with high ideals and he made such a good impression upon us all. He was eager to get to England and in the skies against the Jerries and we all admired his dauntless spirit.
We in America realize how much we owe to your son and the gallant sons of many other British mothers. It is our determination that this time we shall see this thing through to the end that the next generation of our boys do not have to do this again.
We are happy to have known Hedley. He brought an inspiration into our lives when we needed it. His heroism will cause us to redouble our efforts in whatever our tasks may be in this deadly war.
May God strengthen and sustain you.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
I write so sincerely
Thank you for the photograph which you sent me, I will greatly treasure it, my son is the one standing next to Bob and the third boy is Robinson they called him Robbie the engineer. I am sorry to say the only news I have received is that my Son is officially presumed killed, and that the bodies of P. O. Bradly & Norton were found & buried 16 miles from the place they bombed, so that’s 3 of the crew lets hope the other 4 are safe and well somewhere. I still live in hopes of them turning up one day, poor chaps
[page break]
must have been badly hit up on that last journey.
I have not yet received my sons personal belongings, but should do so soon as I filled a form in 2 months ago to claim them, they then sent a letter to say they will return soon as they get instructions from the Air Ministry to do so, I’ve heard nothing since.
Once again thanking you for your kindness.
Yours Sincerely
D Souter

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
A few lines hoping they find you both well after all these trying weeks.
I felt I had to write to see if you had heard any further news of your son Bob, as we have reasonly [sic] heard of a young chap that went on the same raid & was presumed killed like our dear boys, his mother received a P.O.W. card from him 3 weeks ago the first news they had received since reported missing, he was seriously injured & says that there are others there but is not allowed to give their names. I must say that this has made me feel more hopeful, that we may one day hear something of our dear boys.
You will note my change of address as I was very unfortunate to have a direct hit with a fly bomb on my house & lost everything I had, I was at work at the time but my daughter was at home & taken to hospital and treated for shock and cut leg lucky for her she was in the Anderson shelter and doesn’t remember anything about it, only to be carried over the debris in the policeman’s arms, but Im [sic] pleased to say after a few weeks in Norfolk she is fit & well again now.
I will now close hoping to hear some good news soon
Yours Sincerely

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
Very many thanks for your kind letter, I am sorry to say I have no further news, 15 weeks today it seems months, I really get most disheartened as different people I come in contact with have had relatives and friends reported missing since our dear boys were, and have received P.O. cards from them I begin to feel for their safety. I have enclosed this part of a letter I received from a girl friend of Arthur’s for you to read, to speak the truth I have been so worried to take much notice of it, as I have had my mother ill who passed
[page break]
away the 30th September also my father who fretted after her and he passed away just 5 weeks later 8th November so you can understand how I have been placed and feel. If you would care to make any further enquiries you please yourselves but I just don’t feel I can at the moment. It crossed my mind that if it was your son’s friend a W.A.A.F. that had received a card as Arthur had told me he was friends with one. I feel they would write home before writing to girl friends. I feel sure Arthur would as he knows how anxious we would all be. A gentleman gave me this address to write to

This gentleman has two sons in the R.A.F. one a Pilot the other Observer one is P.O.W. the other has been missing now for 7 weeks, he tells me they helped him a lot with the news of their first son reported missing, and they are doing all they can concerning the second one. I thought I would sit and write, it may hurry them up more. Well I will now close trusting we shall

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett
Thank you so very much for your kind letter, and trouble you have gone to, to try and get in touch with me, it was quite by chance I picked the evening paper up and see your name and address, it suddenly came to me, Arthur told me his pilot lived at Sidcup & looking up at the photo of his plane I see your name, I decided to write on the off chance, it was the right one.
And to think your dear son was 21 years old last Monday the day in our lives we all so look forward to, and to think he could not be with or near you, it does seem hard.
I greatly appreciate your kindness in offering to take my son s names & number to the Red Cross, losing my dear husband a few months ago
[page break]
I have to go to business all day & have very little time to spare to do anything.
I also thank you for sending Mrs Palks address.
My daughter shares with me her many thanks for your kind letter & any trouble.
Trust all is well with our dear boys.
I remain yours very
Sincerely
D Souter

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
I do hope you will excuse my writing these few lines to you & sincere sympathy during your anxiety, I do have the same anxiety, as my son Sgt Souter was mid upper gunner to your son and was also doing his last trip.
I have met your son on three or four occasions at Kings Cross and thought what a fine confident lad, and on the last occasion to see him Pilot Officer and how all the crew cheered him aloud when they see him arrive at Kings Cross quite an exciting few minutes we all had together, we can now only look forward to hearing good news of them in the near future, if its only that they are prisoners of war, we shall look forward to seeing them one day
[page break]
If you should hear any news of your son it would be my greatest pleasure to hear from you, or should I hear any news I would gladly inform you.
Trusting these few lines find you safe and confident
I remain Yours
Sincerely
D Souter

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Pilot Officer Hedley Robert Madgett, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 17/18th August, 1943, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out for action and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.

Dear Mr Madgett,
I was very sorry indeed to hear from one of our Directors that your son Hedley, did not return from a recent raid over Germany.
No doubt he has mentioned working with me when at Harkers & I feel, on that account, I should write to you.
Among the many lads that have passed through my department he was outstanding in [underlined] every [/underlined] respect, and for that reason I feel sure he must be safe.
Meanwhile, I trust your anxiety will soon be relieved with good news of him.
I remain
Yours sincerely

Thank you for your letter received on 27th. It was with regret we read of you experiencing such an anxious period as we have just passed through but trust it will have as happy an ending. It is certainly the most wonderful news for parents to receive just when doubts has arisen.
Our boy was not in the same raid as your boy, as he was reported missing 30th – 31st Aug., over the Rhineland. We feel very fortunate as 4 of his crew were presumed killed
[page break]
(2)
at 3 months, at least, think it must have been more definite news as one poor mother was notified her son was buried in Holland, we have not heard about the others. We can and do feel very much for the parents, however 3 of the crew are alive. We advise you to have every hope as apparently all sorts of things happen there these days & boys are turning up after indefinite periods, in fact when we notified the Air Ministry we had heard, the official informed us 1 boy actually turned up after 18 months, he had not been able to get a word through. They must have an official time for presuming
[page break]
(3)
As there would be such chaos otherwise, it does not prove that there is no hope, although one tends to think so at the time. We think you have every chance of hearing good news in the near future. We certainly hope so & should be very pleased to hear from you to that effect. When it comes it will seem like a dream, and no doubt take a time to realise. Once more thanking you for writing.
Alice Robb.

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
Please pardon my not answering your letter before, but I thought I would wait until I had paid another visit to Ernie, which I did last Thursday, hoping that on my return I might be able to tell you and all his friends that he would turn the “corner”.
The matron told me there is only a miracle can save him, and if his chest and heart rally, he will be confined to bed for the rest of his life as he will be paralysed from the waist downwards. He is conscious and can talk rationally to you, but is only fed on fluids. He has chest trouble, which I suspect is pneumonia, although they wont tell me, but he is in a private ward with a Sister Nurse in constant attention, and they spare no effort to see that he is comfortable. He is in plaster-of-paris
[page break]
from head to toe – my poor boy.
I’m going to see him again on Thursday, as I am allowed a free warrant each visit.
I hope I haven’t distressed you with such a harrowing description of my dear son’s state, and I’m praying so hard that the Peace that can only prevent such a terrible life long misery will be given to him. He is so young to be cruelly made to suffer, and to see lying so helpless and I can’t do anything to help him, tears my heart to pieces.
Would to God this terrible war would end, and so save this massacre of young lives.
I sincerely hope that you will hear news of poor Hedley. Don’t give up hope – cling to the last shred and perhaps you may hear before long, at least, I pray you do.
I will give your best wishes to Ernie when I see him, and if you write don’t mention how serious things are with him as he does not know. It would be too great a shock to kill him.
With my best wishes for the coming year, and may it bring better news of Hedley.
I remain
yours most sincerely,
Dorothy Richlings

Dear Mr Madgett
I feel I must write to convey to you and your wife my sympathy in your anxiety over your son, & I do trust that you will soon have good news.
You will not know me, but some years ago you were very kind to my husband, who I often heard speak of young ‘Hedley’. I do not know whether you know that my Husband passed away last year, but I am certain had he lived he would have written you himself.
My eldest son has just returned from abroad & my ‘middle’ son has recently been discharged unfit after 2 ½ years service. I am thankful
[page break]
my other little lad is only 8.
Trusting you will soon hear from your dear one,
Believe me,
Yours truly

Dear Mr Madgett.
In case you did not know, I thought you would like to know that No 61 Squadron has moved to a new locality, it is Conningsby, Lincoln. Stanley’s Post Office savings book has been found among some papers in the Flight Office during the clearance from Syerston, & the F/O sent it on to me with a note to that effect. He also said, “There is still no news of your son, but we are still hopeful that good news will come through in the near future”. So we must keep hoping.
I trust that Mrs Madgett & yourself are well
Yours sincerely

Dear Mrs. Madgett,
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the news contained in my telegram.
Your Son was Pilot of a crew detailed to attack a target in North West Germany on the night of 17/18th August. Nothing was heard of the aircraft after take-off, though this is quite usual as wireless silence is maintained for security reasons. While some aircraft were seen to be shot down, there is nothing known which can reasonably be connected with the non-return of this particular aircraft, and unfortunately it usually takes some months for news to reach us from German authorities, though the Red Cross do all they can to hasten it.
There is always the chance that the crew were able to escape by parachute and this will be our earnest hope through the an[two missing letters]ous period of waiting.
In view of the many requests we receive I would like to add that we cannot divulge the names and addresses of the relatives of the remainder of the crew, but I am sure you will understand our position in this respect and not feel we are keeping anything back.

The loss of your Son on what would have been his last operational sortie of this tour, has [deleted] sh [/deleted] shocked all in the Squadron. We were highly delighted yesterday to hear he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for he had certainly merited it, while it reflected gre[missing letters] credit on the Squadron.
Your Son was one of our outstanding Pilots and Captain's [sic] and had done a grand job of work while with us. He was extremely popular with all ranks, and his ground crew in particular would do anything for him.
He will be so very much missed, but it is our earnest hope that good news will follow soon.
Yours sincerely,

The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.
Any publication of the date, place or circumstances of a casualty, and particularly any reference to the unit concerned, might give valuable information to the enemy, and for this reason, only the name, rank and Service number are included in the official lists.
Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or circumstances of the casualty, or the unit.
The Press have been asked to co-operate in ensuring that no information of value to the enemy is published.

Dear Mr & Mrs Madgett,
Thank you for your last letter. This morning I received very sad news from the Red Cross. It is known now that my dear boy lost his life on Aug 18th and his dear body was laid to rest at Greifswald – Wiek about 16 miles west of Peenemunde Northern Germany with his companion Pilot Officer Bradley. I am wondering if you are in touch with
[page break]
P/O Bradley’s relatives or if you have received any further news about your dear son. I trust you have had better news and that your son is safe somewhere.
Thank you very much for all the information you have given me.
Yours very sincerely
Miriam Norton
