Dear Mr Hughes,
Thank you for your letter.
I can obtain a copy of the recommendation for your DFC, this is usually two pages and has all signatures of all the people who recommended you such as CO Station Commander Group Commander and in some cases the C in C Sir Arthur Harris, who up to the time he died was a very good friend of mine.
The fee would be £8-50p plus 52p for copying and postage.
I can also get copies for all your ops with 427 which if you completed a full tour of 30 or so which I am sure you did the fee would be £I8 plus the copies and postage the copying would be about £8.
Plus this there are combat reports if you were in conflict with a fighter etc and so on as per my ad.
Yours sincerely

My Dearest Mother, Well another month has passed & this one seems to have gone quicker than any other. The war news is very good indeed from our point of view. The weather has been perfect for the last couple of weeks & have a good tan and feel very fit. We had our Athletic sports meeting last weekend & it was very good entertainment. Most of the results were little better than school times at home but the competitive spirit was good South Africa won fewest points but has the smallest representation. Great Britain with the biggest was second last. Saw a three act play last week which would have been very enjoyable in a decent theatre but we appreciate these efforts as they are a break from the normal routine. On Sunday evening the camp orchestra played for a couple of hours. I [missing words] improving fast & is very good considering a lot of them have only [missing words] since becoming a prisoner. Was very pleased to hear from you again & a letter from Harry. Am so glad that you really would like me to come on the farm but I do hope that it is because I shall be useful & that you would need me anyway, & not just as a sort of reward for services rendered in the war. I only wish it would finish now & I could get back with you all & get started on some real work as I just can’t get interested in anything at all here apart from how soon the war will end and that looks like being very soon now. I expect it will be very hard to believe when they tell us its over. Well must close again now dear mother. I hope youre [sic] all fit & keeping cheerful. Much love to all, your loving son

RAF/C.7289
29th July, 1943.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Thank you for your letter dated 25th July regarding your husband, Sergeant I.A. Wynn No. 1024298.
We are so sorry to have to tell you that we do not advise you to address correspondence to your husband until it is established that he is a Prisoner-of-War, and then the Prisoner-of-War Department at St. James’ Palace will give you all the necessary advice about writing.
In the case of men captured at Singapore, correspondence was sent via the Red Cross because it was clear that large numbers of our men had actually become Prisoners-of-War though we had no news of them.
We realise how anxious you are during these days of waiting but rest assured everything possible is being done on your behalf and immediately any news comes through from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva or any other source, you will be notified.
With our sympathy in your anxiety.
Yours sincerely,
[underlined] Margaret Ampthill. [/underlined
