Henry Moss, Flight Sergeant, served in the RAF between 22 October 1943 to 10 April 1946. He trained as an Air Gunner and was involved in bombing Kiel, Potsdam, Heligoland, and Bremen before taking part in Operations Exodus, Manna and Revue with 138 Squadron. Henry was demobilised in 1946.
Henry left school in Bradford aged 17½ just before the outbreak of war with no qualifications . He worked in a variety of jobs including a garment fitter where he made waterproof clothing for dispatch riders. Henry passed his National Service medical board and joined the Air Transport Corps which led him to choose to join the Royal Air Force.
Henry was ordered to go to Viceroy House in London to be fitted with his unforms and receive his inoculations before moving on with his next stage of his training. He was then posted to RAF Usworth in February 1944 for his primary training. This was made up of marching and learning to salute, and basic tests on arithmetic and writing to place recruits on their trade path. There were people from many different places around the globe. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/28928
Henry learned how to strip down and re-assemble a Browning gun blindfolded but found this a pointless exercise as at altitude, it impossible to manipulate the small parts of the weapon with gloves on.
After RAF Usworth, he was posted to RAF Pembrey to the Introductory Gunnery Course at 1 Air Gunnery School flying Ansons. He did not experience air sickness and enjoyed flying. While here Henry learned about ‘offsetting’ the release of the bombs and how to aim accurately. He was surprised to learn that from his own records that he had scored 98.5% in the exam. Over his time at RAF Pembrey, he fired a total of 300 rounds. Henry was finally selected as an air gunner/wireless operator.
Henry’s next posting was to (26 OTU) RAF Wing on the Vickers Wellington, where he crewed up. His first pilot made a mistake during a landing and while the landing was safe, the pilot was sent home. His second pilot was Sergeant Crawford who he felt safe with for the rest of the war. From here Henry went to the 1669 Heavy Conversion Unit RAF Langer on Lancasters, and 138 Squadron RAF Tempsford. Henry flew to Kiel twice; both flights were at night and while he was involved in the sinking of the German ship Admiral Sheer, he did not see anything. Henry flew operations to Potsdam and a daytime operation to the Naval base on the island of Heligoland. He can remember being able to see the other aircraft and watching the torpedo boats below; he thought the operation was a bit of a ‘dead duck’. Henry’s final operation was to Bremen when they were hit by flak but ‘nothing vital was hit’. Henry referred to Operation Manna as ‘Spam Runs’
After the war ended Henry was involved, as a camera operator, in Operation Revue which was the creation of a digital map on mainland Britain as an aid to town and country. Henry was demobilised from Personnel Dispersal Centre 100 having achieved the rank of Flight Sergeant. In total he completed 436 hours 20 minutes flying. He went straight back to his previous job as a garment cutter in Bradford, but he did not stay in contact with any of ‘his’ crew.

Dearest,
I’m writing now to try & give you a little idea of how grateful I am that I’ve been married to you for two years. It’s impossible to put into words all I feel. I thought I was in love with you two years ago, but the love I had then is as nothing compared with what I feel now. I am quite certain that no one could have a better wife or a truer companion than I’ve got, & I can’t tell you, darling, how grateful I am.
I’ve been to Lancaster today to try & get you some silk stockings, but I wasn’t able to manage it, I was told
[page break]
2
That there weren’t any left now, certainly not in Lancaster. Apart from stockings there was nothing I could find that was anywhere near good enough for you, so I send you my love instead.
I have been able to save some chocolate from my ration, & I am sending with it this Perspex ring. I haven’t finished the ring, as you can see, but I wanted to check up on the size before I finish it off. Perhaps you could let me know if it’s too small or otherwise, & then I’ll finish it
This anniversary won’t be as good as last time, will it, when we were at Ossington. Still it’s one year nearer to the time when
[page break]
3
we shall be able to be together always. May it come soon; I sometimes feel as though I couldn’t wait.
Yet I’ve no right to grumble. One of our Waaf officers was married for four days before her husband was posted overseas – three years ago.
Social gossip: The C.F.I. has got a son, born a week or two early. The Flying Wing Adj is getting married, in Ireland, to a pilot from Dumfries. It’s been quite funny to see how excited she’s been the last few days.
That’s all for now, but once again, thank you for
[page break]
4
The past two years.
All my love, darling,
Harold.

Dear Vic
once again I must apologise for being so late in writing and hope that in your big-hearted way you might say "gee, tink nuthin of it son". I have been intending to write with each day that has passed for the last two months and each day I have put it off till tomorrow.
Well, how are you Dogsbody? still getting some in I hope (flying hours) and enjoying life to the full.
[page break]
2/
I suppose that you will be about due for leave again and I have been wondering if you intended paying another visit to York. Don't forget if ever you are up in this part of the world, to let me know and I shall down tools and come running.
I am getting rather brassed off with this job of mine up here. I seem to have been standing talking to nice young blinded boys for a hundred years. I feel that everything I know is centuries out of date. I am in a rut, and try as I may, I just can't get out of it.
[page break]
3/
I suppose that quite often you too experience a similar feeling and look back upon the old days with a certain amount of nostalgia.
If ever you do go back to the old life be sure to tell me and by hook or by crook I shall join up with you.
I suppose that your feelings will be guided to a certain extent by the fact that you are married to a very fine woman. If I were in a similar position no doubt I would feel inclined to lie in my rut and endeavour to enjoy it. Talking of your good wife, please give her my love.
[page break]
4/
I must go about my duties as Orderly Officer, so for a little while, cheerio, good luck and God bless.
Your's till hope fall on stoney ground and perish.
Maurice
P.S. please give my regards to all at 139, Alan in partic. M

[underlined]Extract from 57 O.R.B. (AIR.27/538)
12-13.7.43 Fifteen aircraft detailed to attack Turin. One returned early with an engine failure, and one (Capt - F/Sgt Pickett) was missing. The remainder found broken cloud ,11th good visibility at the target, which was successfully bombed. Many large explosions and concentrated fires were seen and consensus of the reports show that the raid was very successful. Two aircraft proceeded to North Africa owing to failures which prevented them from tackling the long route home, and five others landed at aerodromes in the South of England to refuel before reaching their base. The remaining six aircraft returned direct to base, where they landed safely. In view of the long route and the shortness of the prevailing hours of darkness, it is considered that this was an outstandingly successful operation both in its planning and execution.
Machines taking part: W4388, W4822, ED616, ED655, ED733, ED758, ED861, ED920, ED989, ED992. ED994, EE19J. EE197, JA696, U1J22
ED655 (not ED665) took off at 2205 hrs and landed at 0849 hrs. Its crew comprised Lt,J:E.Russell (Pilot). Lt.R.
