Address as before,
13/7/43.
My Darling Kay,
Your letter written at the R.O.F. on Saturday arrived yesterday. Sorry to read that find things so boring, & do wish I was there to meet you out, as you put it.
The 'Skipper' is progressing favourably, & looks as though he should be out by the end of this week, in any case Ian & myself are going over this afternoon to see how he is progressing.
We have just had a new arrival who knows Reg Randall & Co. including Frida, his name is F/Lt Pullen, he seemed to know I new [sic] them so probably they told him I was here.
I can get both I think, a fowl & a duck, nice work, the only

thing is providing I can advise them soon enough to enable them to dress them propably [sic].
Afraid the coupons is [sic] a wee bit hazy, Mal’s away at the present, but possibly you can spend some "pro tempo"
Have you seen anything of John Clark regarding that watch I left with him for repair.
I like to hear how [indecipherable name] is getting on, you described his antics very well indeed. I should love him kicking around here.
If you ever go near Nicholson [indecipherable name] & maybe see Roy, could you ask him how much he wants for that motor cycle of his, the Engineer Officer is after one, I've heard of one near Horncastle but am afraid it's too much
[page break]

I took the skipper some of my 'after shave' lotion over on Sunday, he was as pleased as punch, all he wants now is some foam bath solution. Maybe my chemist pal will be able to do something.
Afraid Darling my bit of news is being exhausted, the old [indecipherable word]: is still hanging fire, the papers were returned apparently because the M/O hadn't signed that I was fit etc; that has been rectified & away they've gone again, further waiting. What a bind.
When the event arrives, I must buy you a present, what would you like pippin? I should start thinking, but please let me down lightly, I've just had my monthly returns.

still deducting present & past tax, so I have written to Tommy Taft, I've only been getting just short of £3 per fortnight, hopeless isn't it?
Ian still hasn't coughed up? Bad show, I could really do with it.
That bill from Bentins was OK, 25/= of it was for the rear light.
My [indecipherable word] have got awfully sore lately, must get some peroxide & gargle, simply darn't report sick since they make such a song & dance about it.
God bless my Darling be seeing you very soon
Yours always
Jim

Dearest Dinkum,
Many happy returns of to-day, though I'm afraid you won't get this until to-morrow. I hope you got my telegram O.K. this morning and didn't jump to any startling conclusions about it being from the Air Ministry. I'm sorry I didn't write yesterday but I was asleep all day, well, from 12.30hrs onwards!! We didn't get back from our trip until 10.00hrs!!! Gosh was I tired or was I tired. Solid 11 hrs 15 mins. at the control without a break. No future in it at all!! I was so weary that I couldn't get to sleep for an hour after I got to bed, & I'm still pretty weary now. The trip itself was pretty easy, nothing at all like the Rhur!!. Personally though I'd rather do two of those short trips than a long one like Monday. Still, "our not to reason why " etc!!
I received a long letter from you ten

minutes ago, so hows this for speed? Some goon sent it over to our satellite, & its only just caught me up. One correction for you dear. There's no need for you to put my number on my mail, (its 'not done'!!), & if you [underlined] do [/underlined] we have to use it, my [underlined] new [/underlined] number is 146323. You see, my other number was one for the ranks, & officers have different ones. One more thing, just put plain P/O. O.K. dear?
I hope you didn't have too great a shock about my ops Dinkum, but I thought it best to tell you. I had quite a discussion about it with Barbara, & originally I didn't intend saying anything about it until I saw you. Anyway, Barbara pointed out that you wouldn't like it if I didn't tell you, & that [underlined] should [/underlined] anything happen (not that it is going to) you'd have a much greater shock if you got the telegram than if you knew I

was on ops. After thinking again I came to the conclusion that that was the best way, so I told you. I hope you're not annoyed for not telling you before, but I just didn't want you to go worrying unduly. Now you're not to worry now, & thats an order! Woe betide you if you disobey it!!!
Johnny has been putting up some really good shows. Seems like he's pulled his finger out with a vengeance. Anyway, he's not like he used to be, thank God, & I can assure you we're all thankful for it.
I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself in Cornwall dear. You really needed & deserved that holiday, & I'm very pleased that you're [deleted] that [/deleted] making up for lost time.
[indecipherable word] did me very well as regards uniform & the bill is only £55.7.11. I admit I had to buy my shoes & case [indecipherable word], & for that I paid ready cash. The material is excellent & is cut as well as any Saville Row wallah would turn out.

I'm going on my nine days on August 1st & I'll definitely look you up on my way back, & if possible I'll drop in on my way down. It all depends on the train service. If I can't pop in on the 1st, I shall want my civvies sent on for me, details of that later. Incidentally, Barbara fully agrees about wearing civvies as long as I wear uniform in town, which I naturally shall do. Bind will be I shall have to clean my own buttons & shoes again!!!
My commission is back dated to May 19th so what do for back pay, eh? It also means that my F/O will come through sooner. (It ought to anyway, & I shall want to know the reason why if it doesn't!)
The weather's not much here to-day. Cold & showers on & off. We've got to do P.T. this afternoon, & I take a [underlined] very [/underlined]

dim view of that!!. No future at all!
Mrs Cole & Fanny [indecipherable word] were very pleased to see me, & I promised F.A. that I'd send her a picture of myself in uniform [underlined] when [/underlined] I get it done. I'll give you a big one, as your birthday present dear, but I'm afraid you'll have to wait a while for it. Still, it will come along someday.
Well dear, I guess this is all now, as I must hurry along to flight. Cheerio for now. Look after yourself & be good & do have a wizard time at the Wells, & maybe by your next birthday this will be over. Let's hope so anyway.
Adios darling!
Your loving son
Pete.

Dear Mum, Dad, Hazel & Norman,
I must start by apologising for delaying so long in writing to you. I had an airgraph half written and then misplaced it, but, anyway, in the interval I sent you the telegram which you answered. I sincerely hope you are all well – I’m feeling fine [deleted] exp [/deleted] except that I feel a little sad at times when I think of the Sundays I enjoyed with the Smyth’s. I shall always have happy memories of those fine people.
You should be in the middle of summer now and I hope you are enjoying some fine weather. I hope it is not too dry though, for the sake of the garden. How did Hazel get on in the school sports finals? She certainly did splendidly in the semi-final events. And how’s Hazel progressing with the piano?
I have just obtained a publicity folder about Capetown [sic] and intend having a good look around if I have enough spare time. First of all I think I shall have a journey on the aerial cableway which runs from the top of Table Mountain.
We have all been very cheered by the news of the Allied invasion of Sicily as you will have been also, at home. The axis are certainly in for a hot time. I’m afraid there’s not much I can write about so, once more – Cheerio, & may God bless you all, Ron XXXXXXXXXX

Dear Folks,
Well this course is now finished & I’m coming home. I was chosen to go home, then altered to complete my training out here, in which case I should have got a leave, & finally [inserted] altered [/inserted] to back to home again. Unfortunately we get no leave. So it means that I shan’t be able to see the States after all. Pete is going down South. He gets leave then travels all the way south & has two weeks in Florida. Lucky dog! Well anyway I can certainly say I’ve seen some extremes of temperature & it’ll be very nice to see you all again. I had a very nice letter from Mr. Chambers & also Mrs Coram, & 2 A.G’s from you. Pity, about Moira, but it can’t be helped. Its funny the way things turn out. We decided where we were going by the spin of a coin. It would have been nice to stay out here just a bit longer, as the pay is wonderfully good, & I could have bought a lot of stuff home, but at the moment, kitting myself out has made rather a hole in the funds. Another friend I’ve made here, is staying to complete his training John Cox flopped in one of his exams, so I don’t know what he’ll be doing exactly.
All for now
Much love
Terry

Dear David
I have heard via my mother that you have soared to the dizzy height of Wing Commander and that ypu have achieved a D.S.O into the bargain.
Please may I offer my very best congratulations
[page break]
on these truly olympian achievements. Now you cannot say D.S.Os are two a'penny as you said about your D.F.C. and I am sure they were both very well deserved and hardly earned.
It is avery good thing to hear that you are finnished with operational [word deleted] flying which will be a great relief to your
[page break]
wife and mther.
It seems to have fallen to my lot to remain in Ireland for a length period but I cannot truly say I am sorry as I like it very well here.
I shall look [character deleted] forward to meeting your wife one day annd also introducing you to mine.
Is there any possibility of you visiting these pats again on duty? If sobe sure to let me know.
Yours
ever

Description
An account of the resource
93 items. The collection contains two oral history interviews with Jim Wright, letters, cuttings and photographs. It concerns James Roy Wright’s research into his father, Sergeant Arthur Charles Wright (1911 - 1943, 1149750 Royal Air Force) and an operation to Turin 12/13 July 1943 which caused 100 aircraft to violate Swiss airspace.
