33 items. The collection concerns Flying Officer Keith Dexter (1911 - 1943, 127249, 1387607 Royal Air Force ), a policeman before the war, he flew as a pilot with 103 Squadron at RAF Elsham Wolds. He was shot down and killed with all his crew on 16/17 June 1943 on operations against Cologne. Collection contains a dozen letters from 'Dec' Dexter to Phyllis Dexter,There is an extract from the 103 Squadron Operational Record Book on the loss of his aircraft and crew, maps of where his aircraft crashed, official Royal Air Force personnel records, Netherlands official documents, document about his aircraft as well as a photograph of a Lancaster over Lincoln and a crew. There are photographs of his grave as well as a group of people, including Keith Dexter being interviewed as a pilot trainee by the BBC at RAF Hatfield. There are two detailed daily diaries covering his time in the Royal Air Force from from 3 April 1941 to June 1943 which relate activities while training and on operations. There are some memorabilia, a photograph of a Lancaster over Lincoln, a painting, and an <a href="https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/show/770">album</a>. <br /><br />The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Lieutenant Colonel Monty Dexter-Banks and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.<br /><br />Additional information on Keith Inger Dexter is available via the <a href="https://internationalbcc.co.uk/losses/106139/">IBCC Losses Database</a>.

Para 13 – The tragic results of the war in the air. June 1943/July 1944.
The “Battle of Britain” – in the Summer of 1940 – which should have been the start of the capture of Great Britain by Hitler, was not very successful for Germany.
Through fierce and heroic resistance of the RAF, the Luftwaffe did not succeed to control the English airspace. In England airplane production, including heavy bombers, was increased further. Moreover, England could count on military support and the enormous production possibilities of the US, especially after Dec 1941, when America became involved in the war.
At the end of May 1942 the RAF carried out its first massive bomber flight on Keulen, in connection with the “total war in the air”. At night more than 1000 allied planes, squadron after squadron, passed in the air of occupied territory on its way to Germany. With these bomber flights, of which many were to follow, the Allies hoped to destroy the German industries and – by bombing German cities – to disrupt life and to undermine the morale of the German people.
The bomber flights, which during 1942 were also carried out during the day, not only spread death and destruction in Germany, but were sometimes also aimed at Dutch industrial targets. In this way on 6 Dec 1942 the Philips factories in Eindhoven became a target of an allied air attack. In addition, a part of the inner city was destroyed and many died among the population.
Around 13.00 hrs on that 6 Dec, a message was received by the Boxtel town police that there was an air-raid warning in Eindhoven. They immediately made telephone enquiries about the position. This was done to find out the route of the planes and probably also to find out whether there should be an air-raid alarm over Boxtel. Pc Diesveld spoke to a colleague of the police in Eindhoven who informed him in an excited manner that at that moment an allied air-raid was taking place over Eindhoven: “The town has been badly hit and large fires have broken out. We need urgent assistance.”, said the policeman hurriedly. He also announced that, because of an interruption in the telephone centre, it was no longer possible to get connection from the police station to the outside to request assistance and to warn the authorities. Because incoming calls – as shown by coincidence of the Boxtel call – seemed to be possible, the Eindhoven policeman asked through the Boxtel police for urgent assistance for the stricken town. This request was immediately seen to. The provincial and local LBD* were warned, the German authorities were informed and also the Judicial Officer was hastily informed.
Moreover, two policemen from Boxtel were sent by motor to Eindhoven (Knol and Kools) with the instruction to offer their services there. Also the Boxtel fire brigade and the LBD left for the stricken Eindhoven.
Just over a year later, namely during the night of 16 and 17 June 1943, Boxtel was for the first time confronted with the results of the “total war in the air”. Close to 1.45 hrs that night an announcement from the LBD-Oisterwijk arrived that over that parish a plane was hit by the

German anti-aircraft artillery and that the plane – a four engine bomber – was steering on fire in the direction of Boxtel. A little later the plane indeed circled, out of control and burning, over Boxtel and the crashed near the hamlet of Hal. One of the engines had – before that – crashed burning on the railway line Boxtel-Den Bosh. Five of the seven crew still attempted to escape the plane with parachutes although this attempt failed. Because in the meantime the bomber had lost too much height, the parachutes did not open on time. The five English crew were all found dead near the fiercely burning craft.
The German Wehrmacht was soon in position and immediately they cordoned off the area. A group of 35 Germans organised a rounding-up party to capture possible escaped crew members.
A few days later, namely during the night from 21 to 22 June 1943 around 2.00 hrs, an allied bomber crashed again on Boxtel territory. The plane came down fiercely burning behind cafe de Ketting (Bosscheweg) approx. 50 metres behind the villa Kersten, called “Nieuwe Eikenhorst”, in which evacuated elderly were sheltering. Police, fire brigade, LBD, hastily warned doctors and clergymen, hurried to the disaster area. They immediately started to clear the villa Kersten and administered first aid to the elderly people, of which several were wounded and most of them were in shock. The fire brigade of Boxtel started, under instructions from the German Wehrmacht, to extinguish the fire.

This summons compels you with air-raid alarm or air-raids, also when the signal “air-raid alarm” should be cancelled, to go immediately to your post or to the place where you have to report and to closely follow orders and services that are required from you by the LBD. You have to comply with the instructions given to you by or on behalf of the Head of the LBD.
In case you do not appear or contravene your duties to the LBD, you can expect coercive measures from the police or a criminal prosecution. Moreover, you have been made aware of the code of silence in existence with regard to the duties to the LBD given to you, as far as to make known to the public is explicitly not permitted.
The code of silence is also in existence after LBD service.
You may appeal against this summons according to Article 11 of the LBD summons. This appeal has to be presented to me within one week either by written or oral declaration. The institution of an appeal does not bring an automatic suspension.

72 items. An oral history interview with Rosemary Dorricott about her husband Flying Officer Leonard William Dorricott DFM (1923-2014, 1230753, 1230708 Royal Air Force). Leonard Dorricott was a navigator with 460 and 576 Squadrons. He flew 34 operations including Operation Manna, Dodge and Exodus. He was one of the crew who flew in Lancaster AR-G -George, now preserved in the Australian War Memorial. He was a keen amateur photographer and the collection contains his photographs, logbook and papers. It also contains A Dorricott’s First World War Diary, and photographs of Leonard Dorricott’s log book being reunited with the Lancaster at the Australian War Memorial.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Rosemary Dorricott and catalogued by Barry Hunter.

Royal Canadian Air Force observer's and air gunner's flying log book for Sergeant Leonard Dorricott from 27 November 1942 to 21 January 1946. Detailing training schedule, instructional duties and operations flown. Trained in Miami, Florida and served at RAF Bobbington (aka RAF Halfpenny Green), RAF Whitchurch (aka RAF Tilstock), RAF Lindholme, RAF Breighton, RAF Bottesford, RAF Swinderby, RAF Binbrook and RAF Fiskerton. Aircraft flown were Anson, Commodore, Oxford, Harrow, Whitley, Halifax and Lancaster. He carried out a total of 32 operations on two tours with 460 and 576 Squadrons as a navigator on the following targets in Germany and Italy: Berlin, Bochum, Cologne, Cuxhaven, Dortmund, Duisburg, Dusseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Lutzkendorf, Mulheim, Mönchengladbach, Munich, Nordhausen, Nuremberg, Oberhausen, Plauen, Stuttgart, Turin and Wuppertal. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Henderson, Flight Lieutenant Strachan, Flying Officer Crofts and Flight Lieutenant Halnan. The operations are annotated and the log book includes maps and newspaper cuttings. It also includes Operation Manna, Exodus, Dodge and Cooks tours.

Based at RAF Walney Island (aka RAF Barrow in Furness) (No. 10 Air Gunnery School), RAF Yatesbury (No. 2 Signals School), RAF Saltby and RAF Cottesmore (14 OTU), RAF Wigsley (1654 Conversion Unit), RAF Syerston and RAF Metheringham (106 Squadron). Aircraft flown: Dominie, Proctor, Defiant, Wellington IC, Manchester, Lancaster I and Lancaster III. Records a total of 23 night operations (plus three returned early), final entry reads “Bombing - Berlin failed to return”. Targets in Germany and Italy are: Berlin, Bochum, Cologne, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Gulf of Danzig, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Mannheim, Milan, Mulheim, Munich, Nurnburg, Oberhausen, Peenemunde and Remscheid. His pilot on operations was Flying officer Hoboken, with second pilots Flight Sergeant Cheney, Sergeant Holburn and Flying officer Banfield.

DATE OF BIRTH: 14TH September 1923
Enlisting in the R.A.A.F. in December 1941 my call-up was delayed until September 1942, as the Army had conscripted me in early 1942. My concern was that the Army was reluctant to release me and I was prevented from accepting the June, July and August call-ups by the Air Force. In early Septeber an R.A.A.F. recruiting van arrived at Hume Camp, Albury and the following morning I was on my way to Sydney for discharge from the Army.
I became an Aircraftsman 11 on the 12th Septemner 1942 at Bradfield Park, Sydney, completed the twelve week initial training course and was classified for pilot training.
On the 9th December 1942 I was posted to No 8 Elementary Flying Training School, Narrandera N.S.W. for training on Tiger Moth aircraft. After completion of a course lasting eight weeks, my logbook recorded 7 0 flying hours.
The next post was to No 1 Service Flying Training School at Point Cook, Victoria, arriving there on the 7th February 1943. Flying training was on twin engine Airspeed Oxford aircraft operating from satellite airfields at Werribee, Lara and Little River. I received my Pilot's brevet on 16th June 1943 and became a Sergeant Pilot with 200 flying hours in my logbook. The ground subjects were rather onerous, but navigation being a form of Trigonometry and having been in an army artillery survey unit I found it an interesting subject. A Tasmanian trainee and self finished equal first in the course.
After Embarkation leave and a short stay at Bradfield Park I went by train to Brisbane, stayed two days in an army camp in West Brisbane and then boarded a U.S. army transport for the voyage to San Francisco. "NOORDAM" was a Dutch 2nd class passenger/cargo ship of 11,000 tons and the sea trip was an 18 day non stop run. Four days were spent in a U.S. army camp on Angel Island in San Francisco bay. The ferry to Angel Island also called at Alcatraz. Ken Jagger and I stepped onto the wharf and a guard, with Tommy gun and loud hailer, situated in a tower promptly ordered us back on board the ferry; we complied even more promptly.
The next part of the journey was from San Francisco (Oakland) to New York by troop train. In New York boarded the "AQUITANIA" a 46,500 ton sister ship of "TITANIC". The voyage to Greenock in Scotland was a solo trip of 5 1/2 days. On board were 4,000 air force personnel and 7,800 American troops. Meals were twice daily only. In New York harbour the capsized French Ship 'NORMANDIE' was at the adjoining wharf.
The train trip from GREENOCK TO 11 P.R.D.C. Brighton on the English South Coast took place overnight, and in mid September was seconded (with Ken Jagger) to Empire Central Flying School, Hullavington. The purpose of this secondment was for comparison of training standards throughout the Empire Air Training Scheme. There

were 96 types of aircraft at this establishment. Shortly after returning to Brighton I was post to No 18 Pilot Advanced Flying Unit at CHURCH LAWFORD (near RUGBY) IN WARWICKSHIRE. Completed course on Airspeed Oxford aircraft and now had 284 flying hours in logbook.
I was then posted to 21 Operational Training Unit Moreton in Marsh Gloucestershire and teamed up with crew. Unfortunately Navigator and Bomb Aimer dropped out and had to wait for next intake to complete crew. Completed course on Wellington Bombers on 27.4.1944 and now had 388 flying hours. It was at 21 O.T.U. sustained spinal injury in landing accident caused by instructor and failure of safety harness. Next posting was to 4.G.B.S. (Ground battle School) at Acaster Malbis in Yorkshire. Trained with the Kings Rifle Corps and the Coldstream Guards in self defence and escape routines plus night vision improvement. At the end of May posted to 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit (Riccall) in East Yorkshire where our crew was increased by the addition of Flight Engineer and totalled seven men. Completed course on Halifax MK2 Aircraft and had now 427 hrs, in logbook. Was posted to 102 (Ceylon) squadron Pocklington in East Yorkshire located 12 miles from York on the Hull/York road. After conversion onto Halifax MK3 Aircraft commenced operational duties on 12th July 1944 and completed tour of operations on 22nd January 1945.
The last five sorties the crew numbers had increased to eight now by the addition of a Mid Under[?] Gunner in a nacelle using a point 5 calibre Machine Gun.

I became hospitalised with severe tonsillitis at this time for a period of two weeks. Subsequently I had a tonsillectomy in March 1945.
From 25-11-44 to 20-12-44 Britain experienced the coldest winter for 40 years and air operations were at a standstill. Low cloud, snow, and ice were constant. The coldest day was 2 Fahrenheit.
24-12-44 Mulheim Airfield Daylight raid when RAF and USAAC bombed 8 major German airbases under the protection of an enormous fighter cover ... On take-off our airspeed indicator became unserviceable and navigational aids and bombsight were rendered useless. Target was successfully bombed by closely formatting with another Halifax. 1.30pm to 3.30pm Crews take rest
3.30pm Report back to sections, Shortly, call for all operational crews to go to respective messes for operational meal (Bacon, eggs, tomato, toast, tea etc.) thence proceed to briefing Room at 4.15pm
4.15pm Briefing room. All operational crews taking part are assembled. The squadron commander (wing Commander rank) arrives, says "sit down gentlemen" turns to the covered map on the wall, removes cover and announces the target for tonight (Magdeburg). The map has the route to the target indicated by a coloured tape, with changes of direction to avoid defended areas. The return flight is indicated by a coloured tape, again with changes of course to avoid defended areas. The Wing-Co states time of take off, E.T.A. (estimated time of arrival) having an accuracy of plus or minus 15 seconds.
He then says adjust your watches and everyone synchronises their wrist watches. The Wing-Co concludes his briefing and is followed by the intelligence officer, meterology officer, navigation leader, bombing leader, wireless leader, flight engineering leader and finally the gunnery leader. It is now about 5.15pm and the sun has set about 1 1/4 hrs ago.
The crews now travel to the Parachute section where they pick up their chute, don cold weather gear including flying boots and the gunners collect their heated flying suit. It will be cold, -45deg.c. at 24,000 feet.
The crews re-enter the crew buses and are transported to their respective aircraft which are around the airfield in dispersal bays. It is now about 5.35pm and take off has been set for 6pm. The aircraft nearest to the runway in use will start its engines in about 5 minutes and each aircraft thereafter will start engines so that when the first aircraft taxies from its dispersal point, onto the perimeter track, an orderly file of all the other aircraft involved begins.
The noise level created by the twenty, four engined Halifaxes moving round to the take-off position is very loud. As the first aircraft swings onto the runway it travels forward to ensure the tail wheel is straight before being locked in position. With brakes fully on, each engine in succession is run up to full revs and returned to idle. Now all four engines are opened up to 2,000 revs and the brakes released. The aircraft moves and begins to pick up speed as full revs (3,100 per minute) are achieved. Minimum take off speed, 120mph. is reached after a run of 1,200 metres, but usually held aircraft down until 130ph. showing, then lift off, squeeze brakes, lift undercarriage then the 5deg. of flap used for take off. At 160mph. engines throttled back to 2,300 revs. and climb to 2,000ft. level off, circle drome and set course for Germany. Each aircraft followed the above procedures and took off at little more than 20 second intervals.
The first 120 miles is flown at 2,000ft. to stay under enemy radar, then climb begins at 160 mph., 1,200ft. per minute initially but declining as the air gets thinner. The

Dutch coast is crossed about one hour after take off at a height of 12,000ft. Climb continues and 24,000ft. is reached; it is now 1 1/2 hrs. since take off. At 160mph. indicated air speed, the aircraft is now travelling at true air speed of 227mph. We are now well and truly in the danger zone as German rader[sic] is tracking us and directing their A/A guns and night fighters. At 24,000ft. it will take 1 1/2 hrs. to reach Magdeburg. It is very cold and the air is clear. I had my side window open on the climb and when I tried to close it, no luck, it was frozen tight. Later I found the heel of my left thumb had been frost bitten through three glove layers from trying to force the window shut.
For 1 1/2 hrs. the aircraft, weaved, skidded and undulated to avoid being a steady target for any night fighters trying to home in. By this time the inside of the windscreen had iced up so there was no forward vision. The bombd aimer became the forward eyes of the aircraft. The target area comes into view and the P.F.F. flares are visible; now the Master bomber could be heard on the R/T directing traffic. This is the most dangerous time of the operation. Steady course, steady speed, aircraft straight and level, bomb doors open, bomb aimer watching the target marker slide along the bombsight until it reaches the cross, Bombs Gone. The sudden release of 9,000lbs. of bombs in just over 1 second causes the aircraft to suddenly rise 200 feet. Bomb doors shut, but fly straight and level for one minute for aiming point photo. Then turning (rate 1 turn) to starboard to go on reciprocal course for home.
Now its nose down 220mph. which is 297mph. true air speed for eight minutes and levelling off at 16,000ft. on course at 160mph. Indicated (205 T.A.S.) This part of the return flight takes 2 1/4 hrs., constantly weaving, skidding, undulating. After this, descent commences at 300/400ft. per minute crossing the coast again at 10/12,000ft. and continuing until 2,000ft. then level off, and the aircraft, because of its lightened weight cruises easily in the range 210/230mph. After some 14 minutes of flight the outer circle lights of Pocklington Airfield are sighted and after receipt of permission to land, taxy to dispersal area, leave aircraft and ride on bus back to parachute section then to debriefing. The aircraft had been airbourne for 6 hours 15 minutes. After debriefing back to mess for meal, as before, then to bed.
P.S. As Britain was subject to sudden cloud and fog cover, three emergency airfields were established, at Manston, Woodbridge and Carnaby, ringed by petrol filled piping, which ignited dispersed cloud or fog for safe landings. They were known as F.I.D.O. (Fog Intensive Disposal Of.).

Sorry not to have written sooner but I have been extremely busy the last week or so, flying etc., yesterday 7 1/2 hours, came back dog tired, tomorrow we will be at it again so you see I have hardly a minute to spare especially with the other ground subjects. Its a good job I have somewhere pleasant to go to at the week-ends to relieve the monotony. I shall be going to my friends next week for my 48 hour pass, they are very nice people and we have a grand time together. Its been simply scorching the last week or so, this makes you dead-beat, how is it at home? Oh! by the way when Dennis writes a letter, could you let me have a snap of all of you, do you realize I haven’t got one at all. I hope you have received my snaps by now, I sent a few others last week, I expect this airgraph will arrive first though. I heard from my friend in Oxford that the works were allotting me a £1 a month from the Service Fund that has been just formed, it will be sent to you, this will help pay for my party when I come home. Dear Mrs. Madgett,
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the news contained in my telegram.
Your Son was Pilot of a crew detailed to attack a target in North West Germany on the night of 17/18th August. Nothing was heard of the aircraft after take-off, though this is quite usual as wireless silence is maintained for security reasons. While some aircraft were seen to be shot down, there is nothing known which can reasonably be connected with the non-return of this particular aircraft, and unfortunately it usually takes some months for news to reach us from German authorities, though the Red Cross do all they can to hasten it.
There is always the chance that the crew were able to escape by parachute and this will be our earnest hope through the an[two missing letters]ous period of waiting.
In view of the many requests we receive I would like to add that we cannot divulge the names and addresses of the relatives of the remainder of the crew, but I am sure you will understand our position in this respect and not feel we are keeping anything back.

The loss of your Son on what would have been his last operational sortie of this tour, has [deleted] sh [/deleted] shocked all in the Squadron. We were highly delighted yesterday to hear he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for he had certainly merited it, while it reflected gre[missing letters] credit on the Squadron.
Your Son was one of our outstanding Pilots and Captain's [sic] and had done a grand job of work while with us. He was extremely popular with all ranks, and his ground crew in particular would do anything for him.
He will be so very much missed, but it is our earnest hope that good news will follow soon.

Letter confirming that Hedley Madgett's aircraft failed to return from operations on 17/18 August 1943. However there was nothing known that could be connected to the aircraft's non return. Writes that it takes some time for any news to come through from Red Cross. There is a chance that crew escaped by parachute. Cannot at this time release names of other members of crew. Loss of her son on his last operation was shock to the squadron. Contains list of Hedley Madgett's 30 operations. Contains confidential note asking relatives not to disclose date, place or circumstance of missing personnel in any published notices.

33 items. The collection concerns Flying Officer Keith Dexter (1911 - 1943, 127249, 1387607 Royal Air Force ), a policeman before the war, he flew as a pilot with 103 Squadron at RAF Elsham Wolds. He was shot down and killed with all his crew on 16/17 June 1943 on operations against Cologne. Collection contains a dozen letters from 'Dec' Dexter to Phyllis Dexter,There is an extract from the 103 Squadron Operational Record Book on the loss of his aircraft and crew, maps of where his aircraft crashed, official Royal Air Force personnel records, Netherlands official documents, document about his aircraft as well as a photograph of a Lancaster over Lincoln and a crew. There are photographs of his grave as well as a group of people, including Keith Dexter being interviewed as a pilot trainee by the BBC at RAF Hatfield. There are two detailed daily diaries covering his time in the Royal Air Force from from 3 April 1941 to June 1943 which relate activities while training and on operations. There are some memorabilia, a photograph of a Lancaster over Lincoln, a painting, and an <a href="https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/show/770">album</a>. <br /><br />The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Lieutenant Colonel Monty Dexter-Banks and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.<br /><br />Additional information on Keith Inger Dexter is available via the <a href="https://internationalbcc.co.uk/losses/106139/">IBCC Losses Database</a>.

This aircraft was one of a batch of 620 ordered from A.V. Roe, Chadderton, Nr. Manchester in 1941 and built from November 1942 to June 1943. 129 with Nos. ED 303 to ED 782 were built as Mk Is fitted with R.R. Merlin 20 engines, and the remaining 491 were Mk IIIs fitted with Rolls Royce (Packard built) Merlin 28 engines, thus ED 783 to ED 999 and EE 105 to EE 202 were B.IIIs. Twenty of this particular batch with numbers either side of ED 932 (Gibson’s aircraft) were specially modified known as “Type 464 provisioning” to enable the special store, Barnes Wallis’ bomb, to be carried and released on the Dams raid. Completed in the late Spring of 1943, on the 9th June ED 945 was delivered to 103 Squadron stationed at Elsham Wolds, Barnetby, North Lincolnshire. 103 was in 1 Group Bomber Command, with Group Headquarters at Bawtry and th[deleted] e [/deleted] eir airfields grouped along the South bank of the Humber estuary.
When this aircraft was lost on the raid to Cologne on the night of 16/17 June 1943 it had logged 48 flying hours. This raid on Cologne comprised one of the actions during the Battle of the Ruhr 5/6 March 1943 to 28/29 June 1943. 26 major attacks were carried out during this period, the force generally comprising of 500 to 700 heavies. The target was marked by Oboe Mosquitoes of PFF dropping target indicators blind which were backed-up by ground markers dropped visually by PFF Lancasters. The aiming point was marked continuously throughout the attack during which time it was bombed by the Main Force: 1,3,4, 5 and 6 Groups.

Cologne gets 116th raid
Two huge explosions lit up the sky 10 minutes after the R.A.F. had started its 116th attack on Cologne on Wednesday night.
The defences did not open up until the first bombs had gone down. For the first few minutes the barrage steadily increased, although the town’s belt of searchlights was largely ineffective because of cloud.
Targets elsewhere in the Rhineland were attacked, and fighters shot up transport and other objectives in Holland and Belgium. Fourteen bombers and one fighter are missing.
