Dear Norman,
I’ve almost lost track of your whereabouts now. You seem to be on the move every time I hear of you. I have just received two airgraphs from you dated 27th March so they have arrived quickly. One contained the news that you had received the letter I wrote on board ship. Yes, Norman, I received the birthday greetings from all of you in good time, and I hope that my airgraph arrived in time for your 20th birthday. You have been very unfortunate as far as leave is concerned and you [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] [inserted] could [/inserted] do with a change of luck.
So your 25 hours flying were due to a mistake? I have still only half of this flying time to my credit but no doubt I shall soon push the hours up now. We would have had more if the weather had been better. According to the newspapers we’ve had 4 ins. of rain in about a week.
My latest news for you is that I shall be taking an important exam. on Tuesday 27th April so I haven’t long to go. My course here is one of 15 weeks. By the way, I’ve just received news from Walter Suddaby that he has his “stripes” now, so he must have got a move on.
Cheerio now, affectionately yours,
Ron.

Description
An account of the resource
Writes that he had lost track of Norman's location as he seemed to have moved every time they were in contact. Catches up with mail sent and received. He compared Norman's flying hours to his own which were less but he would have had more except for poor weather. His latest news was that he would be taking an important exam shortly and he had not long to go on the course now. In addition an friend had received his stripes.

My Dearest Mother, Since last writing I have had a letter from Uncle Jack enclosing the snaps of your Xmas gathering. They were all excellent & very welcome. The children seem to have grown out of all recognition. You and Dad are not very clear but I expect that is the enlargement. Anthony Parker arrived a few days ago and we share a room with six other chaps, 2 of them S. Africans. He received, via England, a picture of Allie’s wedding group. Everyone looks very smart. Ant. keeps pretty fit. He has had no mail from home for a while in fact Im [sic] about a month ahead of him. I dont [sic] think it makes much difference whether you send letters Air Mail or not as they all seem to take about the same time. Yes I shall be a Flt/Lt in June but have had no notification of any promotion from [indecipherable word] though I suppose if I asked it would be acknowledged. I dont [sic] mind yet as I am not likely to be burdened with any responsibilities, which are very thankless jobs here. Most of the fellows who were here before have been sent to another camp including young Francey whose friend was at Rusape. I note Dad’s advice about catching the first boat home from England. Yes all the parcels you send seem to reach here eventually, except for the stuff taken out & changed by Rhodesia House. Can you send a fairly decent pipe? Have more or less dropped the idea of farming in Kenya and it seems that the Govt at home are pretty keen to get us fixed up. The fellows from England etc who have asked for information have been informed that only when Rhodesian ex servicemen have been fixed, they are to be catered for. Cheerhio [sic] for now. Much love to all of you from your loving son Donald

Letter from Donald Baker to his mother
Description
An account of the resource
Reports arrival of letter from Uncle Jack with photographs. Notes friend arrival and now sharing room with six others. Catches up with other news and comments that air mail does not seem to make any difference to length of time mail takes. Mentions he will be promoted to flight lieutenant in June. Writes about the future. Says all their parcels reached him eventually except for stuff taken out and changed by Rhodesia House. Asks for a pipe and had dropped idea of farming in Kenya.

Dearest Ursula: It is 2 weeks now since I heard from you & I’m looking forward to another of your most welcome epistles any day now. I haven’t heard from anyone else recently, but I can stand that without much bother. I wonder how our 2 year old wonder is nowdays [sic]. I’d give anything to be able to see you both & to see the progress Frances has made since I last saw her almost a year ago. What an age a year is at a place like this! The days pass, thank goodness, quickly enough but a month seems endless & a year infinite. I am so glad that I started the violin – it passes an hour or two a day & I get a lot of pleasure from it – even from grinding out scales. Of course I am still awful but since Harry Friend took me in hand I have felt a lot less despondent & am developing a certain amount of self confidence which I badly needed. I pray that if we are shifted, Friend & I will go to the same camp & that there I shall find somewhere to practice, even if it is an adjunct to the lavatory. Yesterday I got up at 6.30 am & did some practice before morning parade & if I can amass sufficient will power I intend doing the same quite often. My senses are still playing funny tricks although I can taste for some of most days, but apart from that & my spots I am very fit & playing a game of Rugger & Soccer once a week. I hear that London has been bombed again & hope that Hendon wasn’t in the news. I wish you weren’t there – I worry about your welfare much more than you probably realise! I wonder if you have any news of the probable date of your parents arrival in Britain. They will find conditions vastly different from India. This camp is well stocked with Red X parcels now – we have enough in hand for a month. Hans Lensing’s birthday was 3 days before mine but we didn’t do anything to celebrate. We didn’t even make a cake out of Reich bread which is quite a common practice here. They are as heavy as lead & we haven’t the raging appetite of a year ago. Hans is a year older than I. I have just finished one of AG Streets book – “The gentlemen of the Party” & found it quite entertaining. This camp is surrounded by pine trees but here & there are a few deciduous ones which are just showing a little green – about the only sign that spring is on the way. I often think of the large chestnut tree in front of Lido but I think more of the occupants of the house & long to be with them. All my love dearest John.

It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the news contained in my telegram.
Your Son was Pilot of a crew detailed to attack a target in North West Germany on the night of 17/18th August. Nothing was heard of the aircraft after take-off, though this is quite usual as wireless silence is maintained for security reasons. While some aircraft were seen to be shot down, there is nothing known which can reasonably be connected with the non-return of this particular aircraft, and unfortunately it usually takes some months for news to reach us from German authorities, though the Red Cross do all they can to hasten it.
There is always the chance that the crew were able to escape by parachute and this will be our earnest hope through the an[two missing letters]ous period of waiting.
In view of the many requests we receive I would like to add that we cannot divulge the names and addresses of the relatives of the remainder of the crew, but I am sure you will understand our position in this respect and not feel we are keeping anything back.

The loss of your Son on what would have been his last operational sortie of this tour, has [deleted] sh [/deleted] shocked all in the Squadron. We were highly delighted yesterday to hear he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for he had certainly merited it, while it reflected gre[missing letters] credit on the Squadron.
Your Son was one of our outstanding Pilots and Captain's [sic] and had done a grand job of work while with us. He was extremely popular with all ranks, and his ground crew in particular would do anything for him.
He will be so very much missed, but it is our earnest hope that good news will follow soon.
Yours sincerely,

The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.
Any publication of the date, place or circumstances of a casualty, and particularly any reference to the unit concerned, might give valuable information to the enemy, and for this reason, only the name, rank and Service number are included in the official lists.
Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or circumstances of the casualty, or the unit.
The Press have been asked to co-operate in ensuring that no information of value to the enemy is published.
