Dear Sir,
The Council of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund have learnt with much regret of the death of your son, and I am asked to express their sincere sympathy with you in your sad loss.
I am to inform you that if your late son was making you a voluntary allotment through official channels while in the Service, you will be receiving a temporary allowance from the Air Ministry pending decision later regarding pension.
If the allowance is not being received you should communicate immediately with the Secretary, Air Ministry, (Accts.7), Dept. O.A., Redhill, Worcester.
If however your late son was contributing privately to you [your?] support, you should make immediate application to the Ministry of Pensions (Awards Branch) Norcross, Blackpool, Lancs, for favourable consideration in respect of the award of pension, forwarding at the same time proof of financial help given to you by your late son.
Should you be in need of some temporary assistance either now or at any time in the future, please let me know and I will arrange for our Representative to interview you at the earliest opportunity.
In the meantime, if I can help or advise in any way perhaps you will kindly write to me, otherwise please do not trouble to answer this letter.
Yours truly

[underlined] ROYAL AIR FORCE PERSONNEL
Remission of Death Duties [/underlined]
Under the provisions of Section 38 of the Finance Act, 1924, death duties payable on the deaths of Royal Air Force personnel of the rank of Sergeant and above, who are killed or die from wounds inflicted, accidents occurring, or disease contracted while on active service may, subject to certain conditions, be remitted (wholly or partially). If such relief is sought, application for a recommendation should be addressed to the Under Secretary of State, (P.4.Cas) Air Ministry, London, W.C.2.
The property of other ranks, who are slain or die in the service of His Majesty, is completely exempted from Estate Duty by Section 8 (1) of the Finance Act 1894, as extended to airmen by the Air Force (Application of Enactments) (No. 3) Order 1918. No recommendation is required but the deceased’s service rank should be stated in any application for probate or letters of administration or in any death duty account. (If a question of Legacy Duty or Succession Duty arises, it may be possible to obtain relief under the Act of 1924)

April 11th 1943.
Dear Mrs Whitehead
You will have already received word that your son, Sgt.T. Whitehead has been reported missing from air operations. You will, I know wish to [inserted] know [/inserted] any details that are available. There are very few, I am afraid, and even these I must ask you to treat as confidential.
Your son took part in a raid on Duisburg on the night of 8/9th April. Unfortunately nothing has been heard from him since he took off. This was your son’s eighth operation and he and his pilot were very skilled.
There is always the possibility that your son may be a prisoner of war in which case you will either hear from him direct or through the Air Ministry who will receive advice from the International Red Cross Society. I share your hopes that this may in fact be the case.
[Page Break]
Your son’s belongings have been gathered together and forwarded to the Royal Air Force Central Depository where they will be held pending further instructions from the Air Ministry.
May I offer you my own deep sympathy and that of all members of the squadron in your quiet anxiety. Your sons quiet manner, his constant willingness, and his obvious ability endeared him [indecipherable] all and made him a most valuable member of the Squadron. We miss him badly and all are hoping for better news of him soon.
Yours sincerely

Friday April 9
Dear Vic
here we are with another wee hastily written note. I am awfully sorry but I shan't be able to get down to York as arranged for this week end.
I believe that I told you at one time that I had changed my work here and am now doing Signals and voice training.
Well, it is this work which is keeping me here this week-end. The Squadron Leader has got some new equipment rather like a Dictaphone and he wants me to fit it up so that we can record cadet's voices.
In the normal course of events I should have been able to shelve it until next week but the A.O.C. is paying us a blasted visit on Monday and everything has to be in apple pie order by then.
I shall most likely be able to get away for a couple of days later in the week so must keep fingers crossed. I'll send a wire when I can make it. Sorry to gum up the arrangements.
Love to Pam.
Cheerio
