An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

NUMBER 11. 24th March ‘43
My Dearest Ursula: Alas there is still nothing from you to acknowledge My main item of news is that I think I have scoured a violin instructor. I haven’t met him yet & know him only by sight He probably isn’t quite such a good performer as my first tutor but I think he is a more reliable type of fellow & I hope he won’t lose interest in me after a few weeks as did the last one. In addition the star violinist in the camp has performed “to keep a fatherly eye on me”. The latter is a New Zealander named Frank Hurst, not a professional musician but a very excellent amateur with a profound knowledge of music. He rarely entertains us on the fiddle for he conducts our orchestra, being easily the best man for the job, but we are to here him playing at a light classical concert next week when he & any concert planned will render solos & concertos – without orchestra. My senses have a last made a reappearance – only temporary so far but having once returned they will do so again soon - & stay a little longer. I mentioned a Belgian, Jean Politle in a previous letter – unfortunately he was taken away for cross examination some weeks ago & hasn’t returned yet Knowing something of his previous history (in which he has played anything but a cowards part) I feel a bit anxious about him & the treatment he might possibly get – but there is little I can do about it. It is three weeks now since I heard from you, or anyone else. I can never get used to these long intervals & am always impatiently hungry for news of you & Frances. Your letters are far more to me than mere vehicles for information. The fact that they come from your hand places them on an entirely different plane from other letters about which I am quite indifferent. It is our nearest possible contact during this most unpleasant separation. Washing clothes is not nearly as beastly now that the weather is warmer. There is less to wash since I no longer wear heavy underwear, the water is not so say when ringing & they dry outside in half the time that they took in our crowded little room. I have just realised that Frances birthday will be past long before you get this. I remembered all the Valentine dates in good time & then forgot my own daughter! My fondest love to you both / John.

My Darling
Just a little note to let you know I have written to the G.A. & returned them receipt Well one more trip done. We went to ST Nazaire on Monday it was a good trip & we got a good photo again. Scarcely any opposition at all. Just how I like it.
Did I write you yesterday I think I did? If I did I [smudged] probably [/smudged] told you that we had been to ST Nazaire anyway. Time is so funny I am damned if I know what day it is at all now. Still Ill [sic] start this & leave it open in case you write tomorrow
I only know that my leave
[page break]
seems to be a hell of a while coming round this time. I seem to have been back on duty ages this time. Gosh & I do miss you so. More after each leave than before I think. It is nearly six years since the great day (or night) & when we got married. I thought that after 15 years of digs I would at last settle in my own home. And out of that six years all we have had was about 2 yrs [years] I am getting browned off with it I shall be bloody glad when the whole show is finished.
My Boys too. I am missing all there [sic] little devilments. Still when one thinks of Harold Ashton, & Bert Burgess I suppose I have a [corrected] hell [/corrected] of a lot to be thankful for too.
Well my dear I must close now & get some shut eye
Good night darling. X X
