Description
An account of the resource
John volunteered to join the RAF in 1940 wanting to become aircrew as a wireless operator as he had an interest in early radios. While awaiting his aircrew application to be processed he did his initial training at Blackpool and then onto RAF Yatesbury to train as a ground wireless operator. He was initially posted to Group headquarters at Huntingdon as a ground wireless operator. John then went back to Yatesbury for a wireless mechanics course and then moved to RAF Horsham St Faiths to 139 Squadron with Blenheims, while he was there he was locally trained and flew as an air gunner.
He then went back to Yatesbury for an aircrew wireless operators course then on to Penrhos for an Air Observers and gunners course. From there John went to 10 OTU at Abingdon, while there he flew on one of the 1,000 bomber operations in a Whitley flying from Stanton Harcourt.
Having finished his course John was posted to 10 Squadron at RAF Leeming, still on the Whitley, the squadron converted to the Halifax, John flew in the Halifax II fitted with Merlin engines. The squadron then moved to RAF Melbourne, in Sept/Oct 1942 John’s crew were posted to Leeming to a new squadron No 408 (RCAF) as part of 6 Group.
On an operation to Hamburg 2/3 February 1943 John’s aircraft was badly damaged and the crew baled out, he recounts the difficulties of bailing out from an out of control aircraft. He landed in a tree and evaded capture for three days.
As a prisoner of war, he exchanged identities with a soldier. He was also on one of the long marches from January to April.

Russell,
With the German nightfighters, it was the case that for every bomber that was shot down by them, they got a small silver souvenir cup. A so-called “Schnapsbecher”.
Of these, Chief Wolfgang Thimmig has 24 at the end of the war.
. . . All with another inscription.
And apart from awards, the German night hunters gave them a ceremony on ‘Kasino Espelo’ at the Twente airport.
Here’s the Cup of your Uncle Terry’s plane, Stirling BK604 [symbol] 3rd February 1943.
This is a realy [sic] rare picture for you I think!

On the 3rd February 1943, following a mid-afternoon flight briefing, our aircraft Stirling BK/604 with its crew of eight left is [sic] base, Newmarket, England, and headed on course on a bombing mission to Germany. The target was Hamburg and take-off time around 6.30 p.m.
The mission was a full scale Bomber Command operation involving several hundred aircraft.
At briefing we were advised weather conditions would be severe, heavy turbulence, continuous rain and possible icing conditions almost to the target area.
And so it proved to be. As our aircraft continued on its scourse [sic] towards the target, I maintained a listenning [sic] watch on radio, always aware there could be a sudden cancellation of the mission with a recall to base. Though no such thing happened I was aware of the intended return to base of many aircraft unable to make headway because of the severe weather conditions. Unhappily for us (and for many other aircraft too), we did not experience this problem and BK/604 continued its climb towards its bombing height of, from my memory, approximately 17,000 feet.
At a height of approximately 12,000 feet we suddenly flew out of the turbulence we had experienced thus far and settled down on the last leg of our run in to the target, some 20 – 30 minutes flying time distant.
Within a very short time of breaking into clear weather, (in actual fact it seemed only minutes) our aircraft was suddenly attacked by a German fighter. So severe was the attack, and then the second one, our aircraft soon became a mass of flames and it seemed totally out of control. My memory of this is of screaming engines, the plane diving earthwards with physical movement being impossible because of the centrifugal force being applied during the aircraft's plunge earthwards. You can understand I truly believed the end of my days had come.
Events which followed are somewhat hazy in my memory, suffering from smoke inhalation I was dimly aware of a sudden lessening of pressures and an urgent order from the aircraft captain to bale out, it was an every man for himself situation. Unable to see for the smoke, I located and affixed my parachute and groped my way to the front escape hatch, and jumped. I was hazily aware of my parachute opening with a hell of a bang (I had no recollection of ever pulling the ripcard [sic]) and soon after hitting the ground very heavily. (I later ascertained from the navigator that bale-out height was less than 1,000 feet which would account perhaps for some crew members parachutes not opening in time).
Events which followed included my being arrested in a farm-house by the Germans, being held overnight, I believe it was in Borne, and then ultimately being transferred to Queen Wilhelmina Hospital in Amsterdam to recover from leg injuries received as a result of parachuting.
Subsequent dates are not clear – I do recall spending my 21st birthday in solitary confinement in Dulag Luft, Frankfurt. That was March 2nd 1943.
Later I and some fifty or so other airmen were transferred to Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf in Silesia where we remained until early January 1945. At this time the whole camp strength, in excess of 10,000 prisoners of war were taken by the Gestapo on what was to become known as the Death March, because of the number of P.O.W.'s who died during that time. This march was to last many weeks, in the most appalling weather conditions, with little or no food and many of us suffering most debilitating illnesses, such as dysentry [sic], malnutrition, pneumonia, pleurisy and many others.
...../2
[page break]
For myself I was perhaps a little fortunate in that suffering seriously from dysentry, pneumonia and malnutrition I was admitted more dead than alive, to a hospital in Germany, its whereabouts I know not. I remained there until rescued by the American Army and was returned to England in early April where I remained hospitalised until September before finally returning to New Zealand in November 1945.
Memories I have of Borne include the kindess [sic] extended to me by local people and the assistance given to me in Amsterdam by a member of the Nederlands Red Cross a SETTY or JETTY VAN BLANKEN of DELFT, HOLLAND.
This person was able and kind enough to send a message to my parents. A copy of this message is attached.

Dear Norman,
I’ve just received your first airgraph, the first intimation of your new address. The most recent letters I have received were dated 2nd and 4th Dec. The previous one [deleted] were [/deleted] [inserted] was [/inserted] dated early in November so apparently some are missing. The only one I’ve received from you was dated 29th Oct and arrived in damp and dilapidated condition as did the one from Mother dated 6th Nov. My latest information of you was that you had “got home for a few hrs on New Year’s Day and left on the Sunday morning” – that was in Mother’s first airgraph dated 8th Jan. (Correction – I also received letter from you dated 1st Nov)
Apparently you’ve been doing some flying. Pop says in his letter of 4th Dec. that you “just mentioned” that you’d been flying. I still haven’t the foggiest idea of what you’re doing, whether you’re on that “special job” or on aircrew training or training as pilot. I deduce that it must be the former, otherwise you wouldn’t have been flying so early. We have never been within 100 yds of an aircraft since we joined, except for 10 chaps who were next to the neighbouring aerodrome to clean two or three ancient training aircraft when we had nothing to do.
We’re now in the second week of the course here and as there’s a lot to learn in a short time we shall have to do a good deal of swotting in order to pass. Cheerio now, Norman, and carry on with the good work.
Ron.
P.S. Please write smaller. You’ll get twice as many lines in.

My Dearest Mother, Was very pleased indeed to receive 3 letters from you yesterday, the first for 6 weeks One was October & two November letters from Cape Town. Was very astonished to hear about Phyllis getting married again but am also glad as it must have been a pretty dreary outlook for her otherwise. Haven’t any recollection of this chap Jimmy Martin unless he is the fellow who had a small Ford car & gave Buster & me a lift from Rusape School one weekend. Was surprised to read that you and Dad were on holiday at the Cape again as I can’t remember you mentioning that you were going. However I trust you will enjoy yourselves thoroughly and that nothing happens to interrupt you again as has happened the last two times – Harry Roberts & then myself going missing. Things seem to be going so well that possibly next December you will be able to meet me at Cape Town if not in England. It is nearly three years since I saw you last and I am looking forward to seeing you again so very much. I hope Rhodesia hasn’t changed too much but expect it will have grown a lot & will doubtless continue to do so. Anthony keeps very fit & is bearing up. Mrs Parker seems to be spending all her time dashing from Salisbury to Inyazura & entertaining air force men. I hear that she has had her appendix out so that should keep her quite but I hope she has a quick recovery. Have just seen a picture of the bride & groom. Allie looks much better than she used to & has apparently had quite a varied selection of “hearts” before settling down. The husband will probably be “harassed” by Mrs Parker. I wrote Harry congratulating him on his son. What a large “clan” we are now, however the more the merrier Expect Harry’s house will have to take the overflow at the Xmas celebrations. Am looking forward to receiving the books on Agriculture. Well dear Mother, no more space so will close now. Very much love to you all from your loving son
Donald

Description
An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

NUMBER 49.
3/2/43
My Darling Ursula: Truly a delightful week for me, your letter 41 arrived today It’s date was +26/12/42 yet only two days age I got one dated 10th Nov. Your only missing letters up to No 41 are 36, 38 & 40. I am stating the solemn truth when I tell you that, without a single exception, your letters give me more pleasure than anything else in this camp. I read them time & again, thoroughly enjoying them each time. I honestly don’t care a button (or a fig, if you prefer it) if no one else writes – but don’t tell anyone for fear of hurting their feelings – but they might just as well burn their letters as send them here – except Bar. I like her letters because they sound really sincere. A second American food parcel for me is on the camp, but I don’t know the donor yet as I haven’t received it. The two packets of music have also arrived for which many sincere thanks. I now have something to get my teeth into and lack only the skill. It is an incredible difficult process, violin playing & I require fully 10 years to reach any sort of reasonable standard. However I’ll peg away because (1) I enjoy it (2) If I can ever be good enough to play with you it will be worth any amount of effort. Thanks for tips re sock washing I cannot comply with them all. Hot water isn’t easy to come by & I could never get enough to rinse them in warm water. However my technique is greatly improved & I wont have to give away any more pairs to fellows with smaller feet. By the way I have two funny stories for you but as they border on the naughty I’ll keep them till we meet in 1944. Fancy Heath F/Lt – sure it isn’t F/Sgt? Delighted to hear of all your festivities over Xmas. Frances certainly seemed to have a grand time. In the lovely snaps of you in your black dress, you seem to have some flowering shrubbery over your head, or has someone poured the brandy over you instead of Xmas pudding & set it alight. The snap of you holding Frances is superb. Chess moves – sorry over my steps on 1st game (I [indecipherable word] a board & every playing mentally) Game 1. PxP. Game 2. P – Q4. Game 3. – you be white & move 1st. Many thanks for sending strings if you send another lot, don’t bother about the E string- I have plenty. Certainly start looking for a house in the country. Of course we didn’t go in for turkey at Xmas, in fact we didn’t get an extra atom of rations from the Reich. However, we had a Red X Xmas parcel which helped. I’ve spoken to my violin teacher about his neglect of me & he promises to have a session soon. He isn’t really interested & I can’t very well bully him into sparing me some time. All my love you darling. Yrs John.
