My dear Douglas.
This morning I received what might truly be described as the most important letter of the last batch of twelve. One last Saturday (strangely enough the latest date, July 17th) ten on Monday & one today dated June 17th which confirms what I had read between the lines of the letter of June 15th. I daren’t comment – I want so much that you receive all my letters – but it was a great joy to learn from a later letter of your new friend from Wales. May you find peace & happiness in companionship. Who is the friend who shares the joke about the underpants? Is it Jimmy, Tony, or Eric or one I do not know by name. It is a great mercy that anything can help to develop a sense of humour under those circumstances. Before I close this letter I will count how many I’ve had from Laghouat. You say about 40 up to June 17th. Since then I’ve been delighted to have many more. I remember the last batch brought 23 from July 11th to August 15th. I was thrilled to bits. This letter of June 17th tells how eagerly you await your small parcel of soap & towels & your cable of August 18th announced their safe arrival & since then your [inserted] other [/inserted] cable told of the Lifebuoy habit & I’m pleased we can add just a little to your comfort. I do hope the next parcel reaches you safely as it is a nice
[page break]
one with soft underwear shoes size 7 a pair of thickish service socks which I fear may be too thick for your requirements unless you do have really cold weather. I saw a sponge in the market yesterday – just one, but quite an ordinary one such as we should pay 6d for in peace time & it was 4/6 so I left it there. The man said it was worth twice as much as it was impossible to buy them today. So I’m afraid we’ll just have to do without.
Well love I wonder if your thoughts have been like mine these few days. I’ve just lived over again those 3 days after the R.A.F.V.R. were called to service. The night of September 1st when all reservists were called by radio to report to Headquarters. The Saturday morning when we said Goodbye again thinking you really were going that time. The Sunday morning when Mr Chamberlain quietly & gravely announced that our country was at war with Germany. How merciful that we cannot see into the future. Little did we dream that the sad business would be carried on for more than three years. Do you ever recall Mr Denner’s affirmation & how sadly wrong he was? Now I will count my letters from Laghouat 66 letters received to date from Laghouat. The first one from Aumale is dated Sept. 17th. There is a big gap there which you will be able to fill in one day. Goodbye now love & on this special day of prayer my thoughts are with you if possible more that ever. God bless you always. All our love & wishes
Mother & Dad.

My Dear Mother & Dad,
The day is drawing near to Dad’s birthday and I hope the telegrams I despatched will arrive by Sept. 5th. The one I sent on August 27th was one of good wishes and the second sent on September first was in reply to your cable dated August 29th which reached me on the 31st. It was about this time two years ago that I sent you my first letter, and in those days I had no idea what the mail facilities were, or what were the chances of letters getting home. It has proved since that the mail and telegrams service has not been too bad and the fact that I have received sixty-six of the sixty-seven letters you have written this year speaks for itself. On Sept. 1st I was pleased to receive three letters – yours No. 67. and one from Mrs. Clayton dated Aug. 27th in reply to my letter of condolences, & one from Dorothy dated Aug. 6th. I also received one from Mary on Aug. 22nd dated July 10th. Perhaps you would thank all these kind people on my behalf when you next get in touch with them. The chances of my writing individually are small, because the French have just issued a new order limiting the number of letters per man to two per week. As in the past it has been my continual practice to write approximately twice weekly to you my ration will go entirely to you in the future. This may be only a temporary measure our[?] [people are going to fight to try and get it altered
[page break]
but you must realise there are limitations to what can be done in our unenviable position. We won’t dwell on it because it really won’t effect[sic] my writing to [underlined] you [/underlined]. Your last letter told of gathering raspberries and obtaining green peas I have not seen any of the former since I left England, and some of the latter since I left [indecipherable word]. We get melons, marrows & very indifferent peaches & grapes just now. I shall never look a grape, date or melon in the face when I leave here. It is impossible to imagine a diet more contrary to the English. I am simply running to “flab”: it sounds impossible for me to put on fat but I am to an extent which is beginning to worry me. For four months it has been too hot to do exercise and in any case I am very badly off for footwear. The weather is cooling off considerably now; two nights ago we had a terrific short storm which cleared things up. I do appreciate your efforts in sending clothing parcels. Soap & footwear are the most essential requirements. Do not worry about dainty shoes. Durability is what counts these days. I have not looked smart[?] since I arrived here and don’t intend to until I reach home again. Do you remember how particular I used to be about my suits, how I liked everything to be neat and in perfect order? Nowadays a pair of shorts or a shirt that fit Alexander ([indecipherable word]) size[?] 6ft 2½”, fit me, & vice-versa. Life – we have certainly learned the art of “living”. This is since school and the lessons are real. One day we shall return to the white sheets and tablecloths, the willow pattern & the smell of green country & autumn mists. Until that day my thoughts are with you all the time. All my love & wishes; keep smiling & of good cheer. Douglas.

Ask them to thank others who have sent mail. Cannot write himself as French have now limited them to two letters a week. Catches up with gossip and mentions what indifferent fruit is available. Comments on diet being non English and putting on weight as well as lack of exercise because of heat. Mentions lack of footwear and weather. Thanks them for parcel and concludes with gossip.

3rd September 1942
Johnnie my darling,
What a day! It has been pouring with rain, so Frances and I stayed in this afternoon, and she got all her toys out to amuse herself while I took the opportunity to get on with cutting out her next little winter frock. I had all the material, pattern and pins spread out over the dining room table, and then got out the ironing board and iron to transfer off the smocking design on to the dress, and took the opportunity to iron a few other little dresses and things for her; and when the dining room and hall were at the heights of this indescribable confusion, there was a knock at the door, and the vicar presented himself, obviously for tea. I suppose, being a married man with three sons of his own, he understood the situation; anyway I cleared it up as fast as possible, and tried to entertain him as though I had been found officially “at home”. Frances took the opportunity to practice climbing on to the footstool, like an elephant on a tub, and of course fell off backwards on to her head and set up an awful wail; I placated her with a chocolate biscuit, which she dribbled all down her face and dress. When at last the vicar went, about a quarter past five, I hurried on with Frances’s bath and had just started to undress her, when there was another knock, this time Mrs. Greenish come to beg for scraps for her newly established chickens; and while I was scrounging things for her, Frances took the opportunity to throw her sleeping bag, nappy and towel into the bath-water; for which I smacked her little bottom, and was terribly upset to find when I got her into the bath that it was quite pink from the chastisement. Still, I think I was right to smack her for throwing things into the bath, it is not a habit to encourage or condone. But it certainly was a hectic afternoon, and I am quite relieved to be left in peace to write to you, now that Frances is safely tucked up and asleep.
My monthly copy of “The Prisoner of War”, the official Red Cross journal which is issued to next-of-kin, arrived yesterday, and in it there are several mentions of your camp. It says it was visited on 14.5.42; that Red Cross and next-of-kin parcels are arriving regularly, and new barracks are under construction. A letter from a prisoner there dated 28.6.42 is printed which says there is an excellent library and “we get really marvellous food” and Red Cross parcels every week. Are you receiving these food parcels too? You haven’t mentioned any yet. I do hope you are, because that will relieve the monotony and meagreness considerably. Monica Burnand has just enquired again from Red Cross HQ who assure her that food and uniforms are getting through now. I always send my copy of the journal on to your Mother, because it is quite interesting and contains photos of camp groups as well as letters from the men and next-of-kin.
The photo shows Frances in her new autumn[?] outfit of pale primrose trimmed with white angora[?], which arrived from my mother the other day. She looks quite a big girl, doesn’t she?
[page break]
[inserted handwritten] I have bought a teapot, 2 pint jug & 2 beakers in the new plain white utility china. It is very attractive & well designed, & I intend to get some more beakers. The shapes are somewhat similar to our Suzy Cooper breakfast set. [inserted handwritten]
Roy Freeman rang me up the other night to enquire after news from you. He and his wife have both had a dose of flu, but are alright again now. Her boss has come back to this country, so she is kept busy now. Charles was in the office the other day, apparently getting a bit browned off. Fenner is back too, on indefinite leave after a pretty hectic six months or so on ops. They have no news of Keith Somerville.
Today was the National Day of Prayer and as Barbara is on duty the only service I could attend was the early morning one, at 6.45 a.m. I set my alarm for 6.15 but it failed to go off, and Barbara woke me at 6.30 when she got up. I hustled a bit and was only a couple of minutes late in church! One man walked in just in time for the benediction and turned rather pink when he realised the service was over. There was a very nice service on the radio at 11 a.m. I wonder if you had any special service in the camp?
Did I tell you that I am now sending on my copy of NS&N to a private in the RAOC up in the wilds of Scotland? I asked the NS&N if they had any requests for second-hand copies, preferably from the RAF, but this was the only one at the time. I had a letter of acknowledgement from the gentleman today, he seems very grateful for news of the civilised world. I also had a note from your unit and from the local LMS station to the affect that your bicycle has now been released and transported as far as Hendon. It is going to be a bit of a squash in the workshop to house all three bikes, yours, mine and Barbara’s, although I reorganised it the other day (I did, honestly!) However, I am convinced it is worth keeping your bike, it is perfectly sound even if not vary streamlined, and may come in extremely useful yet.
I have dug up the remainder of the potatoes, stored the sound ones and given the worm-eaten ones away to local hens. I’ve gathered the autumn-sown onions too, but the spring-sown ones I am leaving a bit longer as they are by no means large enough yet. While I was busy weeding and thinning the carrots the other day, Villain Valentine, as your daughter is often called, sneaked up to the end of the bed and picked half a dozen green tomatoes, far too unripe to be any use. Luckily for her, I didn’t find them till after she was in bed. The tomatoes are coming on quite well, there are plenty of them but I am afraid not many of them will ripen unless the weather mends its ways. The garden is looking quite colourful now with golden rod, helleniums, nasturtiums, snapdragons, sweet Williams, and other odds and ends in bloom. I have grown some wallflowers from seed and planted them out all over the place, so I do hope they stand the winter and make a good show in the spring.
My savings group has gone hay-wire this week – I’ve got 10/- too much! I suppose somebody must have got short change but I can’t imagine how, and no one has applied for it. You’d think people would miss 10/- in these days, wouldn’t you!
It is high time I had another letter from you, there has been nothing for nearly a fortnight. Perhaps I shall get another delightful batch, as I did last time. I do so look forward to them, although I know they must be short and uninformative. Still it is grand to see your dear handwriting and to know that all was comparatively well with you a month ago.
[inserted handwritten] Auf Wiedersehen my darling, and God bless you. [words missing due to torn and creased paper] which [missing words] to grow more, the less I have opportunity [missing words] for always. Ursula.

An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

My Darling Ursula: Yours missives 1-13 here. Many thanks for seeing to the tobacco business but I don’t want you or Father to send too much between you. I’m very sorry if I upset you on the food question but it was pretty grim when I wrote. Now things are much better although the diet is 95% vegetarian. The season partly accounts for the improvement & we expect reversal of fortune in due course & any result of your many appeals will be SINCERELY appreciated. I really am coping quite well just now feeling cheerful and quite fit but not indulging in much violent exercise.
I could do with one or two medicines, perhaps you could get the Red Cross to send an Invalid Food parcel containing them & some food too. (Please don’t think I am dying though) I want (1) Argotone for my senses have lately shown a tendency to disappear again. (2) Something for heartburn which I get pretty badly at times (3) Something for bladder weakness which has affected me and many others. I often make several visits a night & unbroken slumber is rare. The Red Cross of Boots will give you the ‘Gen’ on the food & medicines parcels
Am afraid my attendance at daily prayers didn’t last long but I go to Sunday services regularly & have joined the Church choir (don’t laugh). I dropped the idea of shorthand & chose English Literature which will be much more congenial. We hope to start soon. Looking forward to the Agriculture & am reading a book on the subject now. Loved the photo of you & Frances together & also your tales of her achievements. Please include a pipe in my next parcel. Still only 3 letters from the Valentines. Have I offended them? Did you get a letter from the Father addressed to me at the time I was shot down & on that subject? I f so, what did he say? Struggling very hard & painfully on the fiddle. Hope to get one of my own soon. Lucky for you not to be able to hear my awful efforts. But my teacher is quite satisfied. Don’t tell Barnet how often you hear from me & don’t mention it to me either. Expect me home for your 28th birthday, but not much before. Freeman’s cousin is not here, are you sure his name is Freeman. Had a photo taken today & might be able to send if it comes out but am not promising.
Always longing for you, Yours always, John
Your postcards, letter cards & letters all take the same time.
