Monday a.m. July 27th/42
My dear Douglas.
I have just received a letter from John who is now in Yorkshire. It is good to know that my birthday letter to him was forwarded. He writes quite cheerily, says “he was pleased to have a letter from Douglas last week,” & Mrs Clayton told me in her last letter that he was enjoying much improved conditions. We can readily believe, & understand that can’t we? The title, no doubt, ensures it. Well love I had the very happy task this week-end of preparing your “quarterly” next-of-kin parcel. The rain is at present simply a deluge. When it abates I shall wend my way to the G.P.O. with your parcel which I have registered to London, where, as you know, it is censored, & repacked by the Red X. I do hope you will receive it intact & that you will like the things which have been chosen with so much loving care. The shoes are just like the ones you sent back from your last station, but size 7 instead of 6 1/2. The socks are a pair also sent back, rather heavy, hand-knitted but no doubt you will find them useful for winter. The under-vests & trunks 2 R.A.F. handkies, [sic] tooth brush & dentifrice, shaving soap (1 stick) & seven tablets soap 6 Lifebuoy toilet (like the last lot) & one Palmolive, & a long sleeved pull-over, R.A.F blue, & I can imagine it will “become” you or you, it, which ever way you like. Now I shall just look forward to hearing that you have got the parcel safely
[page break]
tho' we know the delivery takes several months. That was what I meant on the cable “regret deferred delivery.” The message on the same cable re Grandad just meant that he had gone home again & he seems marvellously well. This a.m. I have a letter from Auntie Dorothy returning the cable with the message “Ask relations cooperation” & the list which the Red X sent to us of things we can send to you – a very limited list – with this comment “So glad you are hearing from Douglas, but we don’t understand, [deleted] Do [/deleted] “Ask relations cooperation” Does he mean ask us for some of our coupons?” that is all, & comment, further, would be superfluous. Just confirmation of the remarks in my last letter.
Well love our last batch of letters was a good one. 17 letters from March 16th to May 15th & 13 snaps. The May letters do not say anything about your “Camp Echo”. I do hope now things are settle [sic] after the heavy influx, that you have opportunity to work on it again. It is easy for me to understand how much pleasure it gives you. You tell of a staff of cooks, now, to prepare your food more in the English fashion. Does that mean that you are not able to make any little experiments yourselves with your fruits & Red X contributions? Fruit & vegetables are very expensive here. Cherries 1/9 a lb. on Saturday & peas, wretched things that wouldn’t boil soft – 5d lb. All the same the shops are marvellous, after nearly 3 years of war, & still look very attractive. I tried to buy a sponge to send to you but couldn’t get one. Would you like me to keep trying. It might be more convenient than a jug when shower bathing in the open air. Goodbye now love once again. 4 days nearer reunion. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
I was delighted to have a cable from you this morning as follows Laghouat 9.30 a.m. 29th. “Delighted cable sixth regret delay in replying please my letters are arriving well all love Hudson.” But am rather puzzled by the phraseology. It is not really like your messages. All the same it is news from you & most welcome. My last news (cable) was on June 2nd. To revert to your message why “the delay in replying”? I do hope you are quite well. Yesterday Dad & I went to Manchester & to the Cable & Wireless people. In two previous letters I have told you about their communications. We arranged that you can send messages through them to us & we pay the account monthly. The man said you had applied to their Co. in Algiers for them to make that arrangement. That puzzled me very much. I thought you would have asked us to make any different arrangements you preferred. The man also said that many of your companions were using the service. The charge is rather heavy – from here it is 4 1/2 per word & more from Algerie owing to the higher rate of exchange, so will [inserted] you [/inserted] use
[page break]
discretion in compiling [inserted] compiling [/inserted] your messages won’t you. We still await reply to our cable of June 30th for which we sent prepaid reply value 5/6.
As I have already mentioned we went to Manchester yesterday & were agreeably surprised to find it very much tidied up & more cheerful looking. Last time I saw it it [sic] was a very sad & depressing sight & the same remark applies equally well to Mrs Clayton. When I arrived there at 10-30 she was just waiting for the doctor to visit Miss Howarth (who is apparently very ill) & as you will easily imagine even fuller that usual of groans & grumbles. She looks very ill & is even thinner than ever. I could not help but feel very sorry altho’ I now have very little patience with the goings on. John got his commission three weeks ago & expects leave in about three more weeks. Mrs Clayton says he is now very friendly with a girl from London & that she is encouraging the association & has had the girl to stay with them.
Well love there doesn’t seem to anything very interesting to write. Again it has been a very beautiful day with bright sunshine & a pleasant breeze & we have spent the afternoon in the garden. I have finished the book “The rains came” but cannot recommend it. As I remarked before I wonder why ever such a book is written. Goodnight love once again. Always all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you. Mother & Dad

My Dear Mother & Dad,
I was very pleased to receive your letters dated June 30th & July 27th, Nos 57 & 65, this morning. The former envelope bares[?] the post mark Skipton & it has taken longer to get here than the [indecipherable word]. The arrival of these two letters means that all letters except No. 11 of the first sixty-five have reached me safely. This is very satisfactory, & it is also very comforting to learn from your latest cable that you received twenty-two of my letters since July 11th & to know that the first two cables I sent off in August reached you. My cable received by you on the morning of June 30th left my hands on June 13th & was in reply to your telegram of June 6th. The message I sent read
------” regret delay in replying unavoidable” ----- this was in no way due to indisposition on my part, I was quite well at the time. Causes beyond my control, of which alas I cannot speak, were responsible. I agree with you that 4½d per word is a ridiculous price to pay for telegrams, and I hope you will agree to my last cabled suggestion to cancel the “receiver to pay” system & revert[?] to the old way satisfactory idea of pre-paid replies, which are much cheaper. To date I have not used the
[page break]
“receiver to pay” system at all so you should not receive any debit at your end. I am glad to hear John is more comfortably situated and hope he will not be required to move afield. We expect our numbers to be trebled in the next few days which will make it pretty terrible & crowded. Enough said, I suppose you will have read the papers & heard the wireless. It is splendid of you to take all the trouble you are doing in sending parcels to me. The contents of the July 28th parcel sound to be just the ticket & will be really useful. I wired you, & mentioned in my past two letters, how pleased I was to receive your first Red Cross parcel on August 12th, perfectly intact. Splendid show. As for my relations & their coupons[?], to be frightfully [inserted] rude [/inserted] they can – well you know what they can do with their coupons.[?] At the moment of writing we are having a terrific mixed storm – thunder, rain and sand, which is a sign of hope that the very worst of the summer heat is nearly over. Enclosed are two photos which will show that I am not slimming. I am not looking very happy I admit, but the sun was so terrifically bright it was not easy to beam pleasantly with[?] the camera. You will probably be able to see from the ‘photo of me sitting down how brown I am. The other one taken standing up shows the tide line around my waist. I am hoping to get enlargements later on more carefully printed. These[?] are very hurried jobs complete[?] in one photo with photographer’s finger “points”[?]. Good-bye until next letter. All my love, thoughts & best wishes.
Douglas.
