Dear Vic
I am awfully sorry to have been so long in writing and hope that you will excuse me on the grounds of being overworked. We have been pretty busy of late, now that we are up to full strength and have showers of "goons" passing through our hands.
How you are getting along with the old Ansons? or are you on "Wimpys" now? Personally I should feel much happier in a Wimpy than in an Anson when in the immediate vicinity of balloons, and I understand how sprog navigators must often get you there.
[page break]
2/
I was glad to learn that Pamela and yourself are keeping so well, and I do hope that the position has not changed any.
Pam is rather fortunate in securing a position with the Ministry of Food as it is almost sure to be a permanently reserved occupation. And you are lucky too, you old dog.
I was standing by for the 1,000 raids but the dirty blighters didn't call me. I say that I was standing by, but actually it wasn't until over a week after the raids that I was informed that my name had been sent to H.Q. as a potential wireless operator to be invited to the banquet.
[page break]
3/
However, as I say, it was not to be, nor for you either. Personally I should have loved to have gone, but then if we had taken part may'be we should not be writing and reading this letter.
Two of my old chums of pre-war days went down, one on Cologne and the other on Essen.
I am starting fourteen days leave on the nineteenth of this month, a week tomorrow, and I should like very much to come down to Oxford for a day or two. If you can get any time off during the fourteen days following the nineteenth will you let me know so that I can come down at the same time.
[page break]
4/
In any case, tell me as soon as poss that I may come and see you, and we can always have at least one night out.
I have to put my pass in to the C.O. today, and in order to wangle a warrant to Oxford I have taken the liberty of putting your folk's address as my leave address. I do hope that neither they nor yourself will be annoyed about this.
It is most unlikely that I should be recalled, but in the event of that happening perhaps they wouldn't mind sending a wire to my home address.
[page break]
5/
It is unfortunate that I haven't had more time to suggest this plan earlier, but I only found out today that my leave would commence next week end.
Many thanks to Pamela and yourself for your good wishes, and just before closing I want to say how much I appreciate your letter "concerning Pamela and yourself." I always want to be hearing of you two; how [inserted] you [/inserted] are, and how the world is treating you, so please drop me a few lines occasionally with the gen.
Hoping to learn very soon how you view my intended visit, I remain,
Your old pal
Maurice.

Dear Mum, Dad & Moira.
I am writing this in the mess room of the drome of [deleted] Friday [/deleted] [inserted] Saturday [/inserted] morning. We have just had our parachutes fitted, & helmets adjusted, & I am going up this afternoon.
We arrived at Desford, yesterday dinner–time & afterwards, we were split up, & nine of us came to this auxiliary drome. There are only a small number of us here, but it is quite comfortable, except for washing facilities. We fly here & go over to Desford for lectures. Desford is a much bigger place, & so we get more personal care here really.
It is our day off to–morrow & so we are going to Leicester to–night, & sleeping at the YMCA there
[page break]
John Fisher [deleted] is [/deleted] Clem Fletcher & Alan Harris are here with me, so I am O.K in that respect. I sleep in a hut containing 20 chaps, with Clem & Alan.
If we fly O.K, this course only lasts a fortnight, & I shall be coming home for seven days after that. If we fly well enough we go solo but quite a few chaps don’t. We are flying Tiger Moths.
–
Well it is now Sunday morning. It is a grand day. I had my flight yesterday afternoon. It lasted for 35 mins. I took over the controls for straight & level flying. it was grand.
We couldn’t get a bed at the Y.M. so we came back here & are going into Leicester to–day.
I am now getting settled down here, 7 we should have a thoroughly

My dear Douglas.
I have just been reading your letter dated Feb. 3rd which arrived in the batch of 15 in one week during May. That is the latest consignment but as I now realize that the letters are mostly merely delayed I don’t [deleted] wory [/deleted] [inserted] worry [/inserted] quite so much. I might say once again what a lot of pleasure I get from them. As I have previously mentioned I always leave the newest ones out with my recent papers & books & just pick one out any time & read it. My choice this morning told of many letters you received at the end of December including one from John. I have no news whatever of Dorothy’s husband since the letter last October telling of a prospective visit to Bury & they would like to come out to see us here. Of course I wrote & said we would give them a warm welcome. If Derek’s promotion has been so rapid the leave may not have materialized. It is a big move in a very short time. I have never heard a word about Bill since he called to see you so long ago. To revert to the domestic side of your letter & to your jam making. Four hours seems a very long time to boil the figs. It’s a wonder there is any goodness left in the fruit. Last night my neighbour Miss Chester brought a lot of rhubarb & I am going to make some jam too. We get some very weird & wonderful stuff as
[page break]
our ration of 4 ozs each per week. I take my issue in marmalade whenever possible & that is almost always & the marmalade seems to have remained at its usual standard. Did I tell you that strawberries are controlled at 2/10 lb & rhubarb at 1/- a lb. rhubarb 1/- a lb!! Isn’t it ridiculous but my grocer told me on Friday that townspeople have great difficulty in getting it. No doubt transport is the main difficulty. I am just realizing that it is several days since I wrote to you but you seem to be so much in my thoughts & I imagine you very near to me especially during periods of marvellous natural beauty. We got up this morning to an enchanted world. A marvellous sunrise bathing all around with golden light. That was really 4 a.m. As you know we have double summer time. The 2 extra hours make a lot of differences & we seem to live at present in perpetual day. Unfortunately we have much cold weather yet & the coal problem is very acute. From Wednesday to Saturday last week was really summer. Then on Sunday it was cold as winter & again yesterday & this morning. Your birthday cable reply arrived on June 2nd & I sent a message to you on Saturday [inserted] June 6th [/inserted] as follows. “Hurrah for fifteen letters, five photos, three cables, during May. Interested journalistic effort. Keep going. Hot. All love. Hudson.” & it was hot, in town, in the sun. Now love my page is used again so it must be goodbye. Will try to send one or two books when we go to town. They have to be sent through a reputable dealer & the nearest is Manchester. Always all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad.

THE TIMES WEDNESDAY JULY 1 1942
CONDUCT OF THE WAR
CENSURE MOTION TO PROCEED
DOUBLE DEBATE
From Our Parliamentary Correspondent
Debates on the loss of Libya and the general conduct of the war will begin at the next sitting in both Houses of Parliament. The Commons debate will take place on the motion tabled by Sir John Wardlaw-Milne and other private members, which reads:-
That this House, while paying tribute to the heroism and endurance of the armed forces of the Crown in circumstances of exceptional difficulty, has no confidence in the central direction of the war.
For some time yesterday there was doubt whether the members concerned would persist with this motion. Some of them were in favour of withdrawing it. Those who took this view argued that it would be inexpedient to go on with it in view of the graver turn of events since the motion was tabled last week and the continuing battle for Egypt. They were conscious, too, of the general opposition in the House to the course adopted by those responsible for the “no confidence” motion.
“ILL-ADVISED”
Further proof of this was provided at the weekly meeting of the Conservative Private Members’ (1922) Committee. A statement issued after the meeting said that Sir John Wardlaw-Milne’s motion had been discussed, and that “there was an overwhelming expression of opinion that the motion was ill-advised and that it should not be supported.” In spite of all this Sir John Wardlaw-Milne and those associated with him decided not to withdraw their motion. This decision was taken after a long discussion at a meeting of the group at which speakers on their behalf were also selected.
Two more members yesterday added their names to the “no confidence” motion – this increases the number supporting it to 21. The newcomers were Sir Murdoch Macdonald (Ind., Inverness) and Sir Henry Morris-Jones (Ind., Flint), both of whom resigned recently from the Liberal National Parliamentary Party. The motion is now backed by seven Conservatives, seven Labour members, six Independents, and one Liberal.
The Parliamentary Labour Party also held another meeting yesterday to discuss further the suggestion that the party should table a motion asking for a full inquiry into the causes of the Libya defeat. It was decided not to table such a motion.
AN APPEAL
A new motion which was tabled last night was one in the names of Commander King-Hall and Mr. Owen Evans, declaring that “in view of the critical nature of the military situation in Egypt, it is not in the national interest to debate the conduct of the war until the present battle has reached a definite conclusion.” If the rules of the House permit, Commander King-Hall also wishes to make an appeal in public to Sir John Wardlaw-Milne, before the debate begins, not to proceed with his motion. In view of the decision taken at yesterday’s meeting any such attempt seems unlikely to succeed.
The Commons debate will go on for two days, and the Prime Minister will speak last, just before the division is taken. To give an opportunity to as many speakers as possible the sitting on the first day will be extended beyond the usual hour for the rising of the House. The debate will be opened by Sir John Wardlaw-Milne, and it is expected that Admiral Sir Roger Keyes will second the “no confidence” motion. The first speech for the Government will then be made by Mr. Oliver Lyttelton, Minister of Production, and he will be followed by Mr. Greenwood speaking for the Labour Party. Those supporting the “no confidence” motion hope that Mr. Clement Davies, Mr. Hore-Belisha, and Mr. Aneurin Bevan may also be called to speak for them in the course of the debate.
It seems certain that the Government will have a very big majority against the motion, but the House will not be satisfied unless it is assured that the most drastic action is being taken to investigate the causes of the Libya defeat and to remedy whatever defeats may have been revealed by these events. This applies both to the leadership and equipment of our forces in the field and to the arrangements for the supreme direction of the war. The Prime Minister’s speech at the end of the debate will be eagerly awaited, and the House will be much influenced by what he has to say.
The debate in the House of Lords will also occupy the whole of a second day. The first Government spokesman there will be Lord Cranborne, and the Lord Chancellor will reply to the debate.
THE TIMES MONDAY JULY 13 1942
DAY RAID ON DANZIG
U-BOAT YARDS BOMBED
1,700 MILES THROUGH STORMS
From Our Aeronautical Correspondent
Several squadrons of Lancasters – the R.A.F.’s latest and fastest heavy bombers – flew 1,750 miles through violent thunderstorms and thick cloud to make a daring daylight attack on Danzig on Saturday evening. It was the longest daylight operational flight made by our bombers. A smaller force of Lancasters also bombed the Baltic port of Flensburg.
The Air Ministry report on the raid stated:-
In daylight on Saturday evening several squadrons of Lancaster bombers attacked the important submarine building yards at Danzig. The attack was made from well below cloud base, and the yards were heavily bombed.
At about the same time other bombers attacked the submarine building yards at Flensburg from a very low level. Bursts are reported on the slipways.
Three aircraft of Bomber Command are missing from these daylight operations.
During Saturday night our bombers laid mines in enemy waters. Two of our aircraft are missing.
VIOLENT WINDS
On the outward journey conditions were difficult for the crews, some of which failed to locate their target. The great bombers were thrown about by violent winds, and had to force their way through thick thunder clouds and sudden storms. Several of our machines were hit by [italics] flak [/italics],
[map]
but the attack was pressed home. No German fighters appear to have been up, probably on account of the unfavourable conditions.
As in most of Bomber Command’s recent raids, the main targets were production centres of importance in the Battle of the Atlantic – U-boat and other shipbuilding yards – and the bursting of many heavy bombs in the target area was observed, while some of the crews reported big fires.
Danzig is the only submarine building centre which the enemy might reasonably have regarded as being outside the range of our bombers, and for that reason the dock and yard facilities have been further developed by the Germans.

Madam,
I am directed to refer to your recent enquiries concerning the identity of a man named ‘Boldey’ mentioned in the trial Warrant Officer Hughes, & to inform you that W/O. Hughes has been interviewed on your behalf a second time & states that the man ‘Boldey’ was in Berlin in 1940 using the name Boldey.
There can therefore be no connection between him & your son FL/Sgt D. A Boldy who was reported missing 11. July 1942.
It is hoped that this assurance will be of help to you in your present anxiety.
I am. madam

Steve & A.D.,
This is rather an amazing letter & it appears truth is stranger than fiction really. I can’t write it twice so am sending Steve the carbon copy. First you might read this newspaper cutting.
[two newspaper cuttings]
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
This case was reported in the papers on Friday the 24th & [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] an alleged statement by W/O Hughes – while placidly drinking morning tea my eye fell on the following cutting
[two newspaper cuttings]
Well that name was near enough to make me decide to do something about it.
I can’t tell you exactly how I got Dick his breakfast & off to work, made the beds & cleaned up but apparently these actions become automatic at times. While I was dressing the phone rang & Mr. Fentiman was at the other end. He has always been awfully decent to us. [inserted] met him at Maisies. [/inserted] Steve knows him of cause. He began a round about preamble of “You’ll be surprised after such a long time. Just I thought I’d ask if you had all good news of the family &
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
so on. I said ‘you mean you’ve read this mornings [sic] paper’ & he said ‘yes I didn’t know if you had’ well what did I think? I said I didnt [sic] but I was going to find out. So he gave me his phone number, offered any help he could give & said to phone him between 4 & 5 to let him know how far I’d got – in any case he’d phone again at night. I said Dick was staying with me, he said he would still phone to find out if there was anything he could do.
Then I started out – the Raf [sic] Casulty [sic] Branch had nothing. Case closed. The man was awfully good & helpful but there was nothing he could do. So I went to the Daily Express. Mr Luckfield who helped me find about the boys in Sweden had left & a news Editor saw me. By this time it had gone 2 & I was empty having had a slice of toast & coffee for breakfast. You do meet some sub-human beings – this one said
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
‘Well it would be better for your son to be dead than to be brought home & shot’. How I didnt [sic] spew all over his feet I don’t know. Emptiness probably. He would give me no help but suggested I went to Uxbridge where the trial was Taking [sic] place & found out for myself. I had an appointment for a hair set as it happened & so phoned through to Jac first to cancel it & she said she knew by my voice something was wrong. We had 2 ‘All Change’ on the way to Uxbridge but I got to the Depot by 4:30. God bless those young Corporals in the Guardroom. They said they would do what they could. Would I like to come back next day or wait till the trial ended at 6. I’d wait. So I went to the station & phoned Dick & Mr. Fentiman. Dick insisted I should go from Uxbridge to the Garrick & have a meal with him anytime between 7.30 & 9. When I got back the small
[page break]
[underlined] 5 [/underlined]
Corporal said – ‘you didnt [sic] leave your sons [sic] number & rank’. (I deliberately hadn’t. I was getting information not giving it). ‘I have it’ I said. ‘Well it doesn’t matter’ he said because its [sic] not your son, but the other Corporal will see you’. So the big Corporal came along. He said ‘I have seen Hughes & he says the man isnt [sic] an Englishman but a foreigner - a Hungarian & is using an assumed name’. I said ‘thank you very much, you have been kind’ & held out my hand. You do meet some God like humans too. He said ‘I know just how you feel. Do go along & get yourself something to eat & God bless’. It was all I could do not to burst into tears. Oh Stevie God how I wanted you & your little [indecipherable word] taps & that steadying hand of yours. Anyway I spent 5/6 & ate with Dick by about 7.30. Uxbridge is awfully far out, but I wasnt [sic] a bit happy & at dinner I said - ‘Its [sic] such an unusual name
[page break]
[underlined] 6 [/underlined]
& from where has this man taken it – have they had Dave dead or alive & what have they done with him’. Dick said he’d been thinking all those things but hadnt [sic] wanted to start me on anything.
Well then even the answer I’d got began to sound unbelievable even to me Dave’s mother – so I wrote the following letter.
The Adjutant, Raf [sic] Depot, Uxbridge.
Dear Sir, on Friday the 24th the Daily Express, Daily Telegraph & Times in reporting the trial of W/O Hughes quoted an alleged statement made by him in which he stated ‘I was introduced to a man named BOLDEY (later reported as BOLBY, BOLDREY & BOLDLEY.) This name being similar to ours I went to the Raf [sic] Casualty Branch in Oxford St to enquire if this could be my son F/Sgt DAVID ADRIAN BOLDY 923995 C Unit SQD. 207 & posted missing from air operations over Danzig on the night of 11th/12th July 1942 & later presumed killed. His case was closed & they were unable to give me any further information. I therefore went to Uxbridge where the corporals in The Guardroom most kindly offered to try to contact someone in authority if I would wait till the
[page break]
[underlined] 7 [/underlined]
trial ended for the day.
Later one of the Corporals informed me he had spoken to W/O Hughes in the presence of an R.A.F. Officer & he (Hughes) had stated that the man he called BOLDEY (BOLBY, BOLDREY, BOLDLEY) was a foreigner – a Hungarian & was using an assumed name.
I would be very grateful to have official confirmation of W/O Hughes statement that the man mentioned is not my son. yours [indecipherable word] L Boldy. I got the reply on Friday the 7th. I don’t know how I [indecipherable word] in the interval & have since had Photostat copies of it one of which I enclose for each of you.
Mr Usher (the porter) brought our laundry round on the morning after this case appeared so I said ‘Did you see the paper yesterday?’ & he replied ‘I did madam & I didn’t know whether I should mention it to you or not’. I have since shown him the Raf [sic] reply original letter. Bob & Maisie saw it. Bob till today has neither said nor done a thing
[page break]
[underlined] 8 [/underlined]
about it. Bella & I went down on a prearranged visit to Maisie when she left it to me to mention it & then said – ‘My dear be prepared for anything. I hear they have all been squealing like rats’. I took Mrs Baker all across London the following Monday (& have for the last 8 years) She too left it for me to mention & then said – ‘Yes, I read it I left it to you to tell me if there was anything to say’.
What the bloody hell is the matter with everybody - they are all ready to take assistance but never ready to offer it. So that only one man had the courage & the kindness to offer help if it were needed.
I had a postcard from Mrs Warren dated 29th August from Newcastle saying she hoped to see me soon. She was writing from the nursing Home where she has had an operation on her foot. I don’t know if they’ve seen it. Pat saw it as Boldi. & did not connect it initially.
Other bits of interest are that they are
[page break
[underlined] 9 [/underlined]
all using assumed names. Hughes was Herr Becker first & then John Baker, another Raf [sic] Officer Freeman was Royston. F/O Carpenter was Carter & so on. They could not just have imagined Boldy William Joyce is being tried next Monday & if I don’t [indecipherable word] coward I shall go to it. I’ve never been in a court I don’t like seeing other humans in trouble, but he must surely know how they came to take their assumed names & that might throw some light on things. Then I can act through official or legal channels if necessary.
Hughes comes from Bottesford Daves [sic] station but he baled [sic] out in 1943. August Hughes was asked to join the British Free Corps (to fight in Russia) & was told McCarthy & BOLDREY would be there. Another part said he was given a voice test & BOLBY, Mrs William Joyce & Dr. Dietze were there & again I gave revolvers to the heads of the Free Corps & when I had done this & paid a visit to a man named BOLDLEY & when I told him that the Free Corps had revolvers & might attack the

Germans he got very panicky & he got in touch with William Joyce & his clique! My comment when I read that was ‘the only possible thing I can imagine Dave saying to that would be ‘Bloody good show’. And so that for the moment is that. I was just about dead with nervous exhaustion but am recovering. These confounded babies & amorous cats keep me awake well into the small hours & then I sleep like the dead later on, but its [sic] not the same thing. I feel like I’d like to pass into oblivion for at least a week.
Well its [sic] 11. & Dick has just come in. He asked me to lunch today to meet the Sheelings & has been to ‘Sweet Yesterday’ this evening. Anne Zeigler & Webster Booth so it must have been good, he enjoyed it he says. Now a cup of nice warm coffee & bed.
You know I’ll be doing anything thats [sic] necessary.
Lots of love

The Adjutant,
R.A.F. Depot.
Uxbridge.
Dear Sir,
On Friday the 24th the Daily Express, Daily Telegraph & Times, in reporting the trial of W/O Hughes quoted an alleged statement made by him in which he stated ‘I was introduced to a man named BOLDEY’, (later reported as BOLBY-BOLDREY. BOLDLEY). This name being similar to ours I went to the Raf. [sic] Casulty [sic] Branch in Oxford Street to enquire if this could be my son Ft/Sgt DAVID ADRIAN BOLDY, 923995 C. UNIT. SQD. 207 reported missing from air operations over Danzig on the night of 11th/12th July 1942 & later presumed killed. His case was closed & they were unable to give me any further information.
I therefore went to Uxbridge
[page break]
where the Corporals in the Guardroom most kindly offered to try to contact someone in authority if I would wait till the trial ended for the day.
Later one of the Corporals informed me he had spoken to W/O Hughes in the presence of an R.A.F. Officer and he (Hughes) had stated that the man he called BOLDEY (Bolby-Boldrey-Boldley) was a foreigner - a Hungarian & was using an assumed name.
I would be very grateful to have official conformation [sic] of W/O Hughes statement that the man mentioned is not my son.
Yours faithfully,
[underlined] L. Boldy [/underlined]

Madam,
I am directed to refer to your recent enquiries concerning the identity of a man named "Boldey" mentioned in the trial of Warrant Officer Hughes, and to inform you that Warrant Officer Hughes has been interviewed on your behalf a second time and states that the man "Boldey" was in Berlin in 1940 using the name Boldey.
There can therefore be no connection between him and your son, Flight Sergeant D.A. Boldy, who was reported missing on the 11th July, 1942.
It is hoped that this assurance will be of help to you in your present anxiety.
I am, Madam,
Your obedient Servant,
[illegible signature]
for Director of Personal Services.
Mrs. L. Boldy,

Dear Mrs. Boldy,
It is not without hesitation that I refer again, after so long an interval, to the loss in action of your son, Flight Sergeant D.A. Boldy, but I feel sure that you will wish to know the result of investigations undertaken by the Royal Air Force Missing Research and Enquiry Service in Germany.
These investigations show that two aircraft were shot down in the vicinity of Danzig on the same night, and that all the members of the two crews were killed and buried by the Germans in a collective grave in Danzig Cemetery, as it was not possible to identify any of them separately.
Where adequate arrangements cannot be made for the permanent upkeep of the graves, it is the practice of the Army Graves Service to transfer them to Service cemeteries where facilities are available for their proper care by the Imperial War Graves Commission. It is In accordance with this policy that they have all therefore been re-interred in a collective group of graves in Marlbork British Military Cemetery, which is situated approximately 25 miles south east of Danzig. The graves are numbered 12-14, Row B, Plot 3, and will be marked collectively in the names of your son and the other 13 airmen.
I am sorry that, owing to the formidable task of our search teams it has not been possible to let you have this information earlier, but I do hope this somewhat belated news will afford you a measure of comfort in your sad loss.
Yours sincerely

DAY RAID ON DANZIG
U-BOAT YARDS BOMBED
1,700 MILES THROUGH STORMS
From our Aeronautical Correspondent
Several squadrons of Lancasters – the R.A.F.’s latest and fastest heavy bombers – flew 1,750 miles through violent thunderstorms and thick cloud to make a daring daylight attack on Danzig on Saturday evening. It was the longest daylight operational flight made by our bombers. A smaller force of Lancasters also bombed the Baltic port of Flensburg.
The Air Ministry report on the raid stated :-
In daylight on Saturday evening several squadrons of Lancaster bombers attacked the important submarine building yards at Danzig.
Several of our machines were hot by flak,

but the attack was pressed home.

BOMBS DROPPED FROM ROOF HEIGHT
HEAVY DAMAGE CERTAIN
Near Denmark (states the Air Ministry News Service describing the raid) there was 10-10ths cloud, with base as low as 800ft., and its top at 15,000ft. There was severe icing along the route, and thunderstorms with much static electricity. The crews tried all heights, from 50ft. to 20,000ft. Inevitably they had to lose formation, though some were able to join up again for a time. Not every navigator was able to find the way, and some Lancasters had to turn for home before they could find Danzig. A formidable force, and certainly one big enough to do heavy damage, got there.
One pilot, a squadron leader, describing the attack, said: “All of us met at an appointed spot over England and flew out over the sea for 150 miles. Then we ran into thick clouds and lost formation for a quarter of an hour. We regained it in a large gap in the clouds, but lost it again when we got into the thick cloud once more. We flew on through this sort of weather for two more hours.
POWER DIVE TO 1,000FT.
“As I came towards the target I ran into a field of flak. I came down, first to 2,500ft. and then right down. Skimming over the roofs I saw light flak going over the top of the Lancaster and hitting houses on the other side. Though it was not dark there were searchlights. I told my gunners to shoot them up. The front and mid-upper gunner each put one out. Over the target I saw a number of other Lancasters. My bomb-aimer was sure he had the submarine yard in his sight.
Another pilot, a flight sergeant, described how he saw the southern area of the target well alight. Another, when over Danzig, made a power dive and came down to 1,000ft. at a terrific speed. Then he levelled out and bombed. Immediately afterwards a shell blew a hole one foot wide in the belly of the aircraft, cut the “intercom,” holed the mid-upper turret, and made a great number of small holes in the fuselage.
At Flensburg delayed action bombs were dropped from 50ft., and as the crews came away they saw the bursts on the submarine slipways and one very heavy explosion nearby. One aircraft went in so low that it hit a house. A great hole was torn in the bomber’s fuselage, and the main plane and propellers were damaged. But the crew went on to bomb and returned safely home. They suffered only from intense cold of the wind whistling in through the holes, which they vainly tried to stuff with cushions. At the interrogation they brought along bits of brick which had been forced into the cockpit.

CALCUTTA AND DELHI
14, 1942.
DANZIG BOMBED IN DAYLIGHT
R.A.F.’S GREAT EXPLOIT
ATTACK ON SUBMARINE YARDS
LONDON. July 12.
Roaring over their target at the height of a thunderstorm, lightning intermingling with gunfire, bomb explosions with peals of thunder, the R.A.F. on Saturday carried out its most daring and longest daylight raid of the war.
Danzig.[sic] the Baltic port.[sic] thought by the Nazis to be out of R.A.F. range, was the chief target involving a flight of between 1,600 and 1.800 [sic] miles for a formidable force of Lancasters which pounded submarine yards where ever-increasing numbers of U-boats have been constructed to harass our shipping lines.
Icing, electricity, heavy cloud and thunderstorms were encountered by the crews who flew as low as 50 feet and high as 20,000 feet, sometimes losing formation but never wavering from their course. Over this mediaeval town, with a violent thunderstorm raging. the R.A.F. swooped low to attack creating a Valkyrean scene as their bombs whistled down.
Other bombers went to the submarine yards at Flensburg, another Baltic Port, where delayed action bombs were dropped from 500 feet. One plane went so low that it crashed into a house but carried out its bombing and returned with bricks in its fuselage as souvenirs of this epic flight.
TWO PLANES MISSING
An Air Ministry communiqué says:-“Several squadrons of Lancaster bombers in daylight yesterday attacked important submarine building yards at Danzig.
“The attack was made from well below cloud base and the yards were heavily bombed. At about the same time other bombers attacked submarine building yards at Flensburg from a very low level. Bursts are reported on slipways. Three aircraft of the Bomber Command are missing from these daylight operations.
“Last night our bombers laid mines in enemy waters. Two of our aircraft are missing.”
The raid on Danzig was the second carried out by the Royal Air Force on this city. The first was on the night of November 10, 1940. when the railway junction was attacked in bad weather conditions with server electrical storms and lightning. The Royal Air Force on that occasion lost five planes.
The attack on Danzig is the longest journey for a daylight raid since the war began. Lancaster bombers were also used in the great daylight raid on Diesel engine works at Augsburg on April 27.
Flensburg is approximately halfway to Danzig. being in the Prussian province of Schleswsig-Holstein at the head of Flensburg Fjord, which runs into the Baltic north of the Kiel Canal. It has marine engineering schools, shipbuilding yards and iron foundries. The port was also raided by the Russians last year.
When the war began Danzig had four large dockyards, several floating docks and facilities for repair and maintenance of ships. The principal exports were coal, timber, sugar, grain cement, naphtha. [sic] iron and steel. Danzig was an important junction of air communications in peace time.—
