ten times worse. There is a chap in our billet though who is a damn sight more cheesed than me. He is a corporal clerk & is fed up to the teeth. His wife is expecting a baby soon & he has her parents living with her & Joe doesn’t get on with them at all & they will not leave.
So we have not got all the trouble With regard to [corrected] that [/corrected] Flight Engineers Course. It probable that it will be compulsory for all fitters soon to take the course because of the Ferrying of planes over the atlantic [sic] & they will want all the Available Fit F E s to go to operational units (stunts)( as you call em [sic] )
I hope that it turns out that Vee. is pregnant especially now she has had that “Mummy Sickness”. Old Bert will be disappointed if she is not too wont [sic] he

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

My dearest Ursula: Am glad to say that I am at last feeling much more like myself since my constitution is slowly adjusting itself to the new conditions (one and a half lines blacked out by the censor) This can only be done from outside the Empire since all Empire food parcels are pooled and communally distributed. Would you ask (1) Jes Zwanenberg if any of his friends in Holland, America etc (2) Grunfeld if his connections in Sweden, Turkey etc (3) My parents if friends in Argentina or America could help us – and anyone else you know. We want regular parcels – not merely one Please also arrange for a regular flow of tobacco and cigarettes, which, duty free, are not costly. Get all the support you can for the Red Cross for their magnificent work (1 ½ lines censored) Sorry always to be asking for things – here another request for a pair of walking shoes at the first available opportunity I’m deeply ashamed of my personal appearance. Having no razor or shaving brush I now possess a five weeks beard. When our plane was hit I was drenched TO THE SKIN in oil and I had to wash every article of clothing. My uniform shrank several sizes and was still very discoloured and being my only costume I look like a scarecrow. Everyone is the same, the camp population closely resembling a crowd of beggars clothed in every conceivable type of tattered garment. What an age it seems since I last saw phoned or had a letter from you. You are always in my thoughts, my darling. Ever yours
John

My Dear Mother & Dad,
I have not received any letters from you since the six (Nos. 44 to 49) arrived on June 30th, but on July 6th I was very pleased to receive your telegram dated the 4th reading as follows:- "Delighted cable received thirtieth no prepaid reply to-day send your message receiver to pay letters despatched will explain holiday week now ended both well all love" I replied to this the same day "Delighted cable fourth remarks regarding receiver to pay understood must await official confirmation Laghauat first will probably take one week to come through latest letter received fortynine well all love thoughts Hudson" Much to my annoyance this telegram was returned to me from the Laghauat P.O. [inserted] authorities [/inserted] who required my Christian name appending to the message. This means two days delay and the message will not leave until tonight. The hold up at this end, and petty red tape, are ever increasing. It becomes more than annoying. The idea of "receiver to pay" originated at this end and I put my name down to be included in the scheme some time ago. The confirmation from Alger has not been received in Loghauat yet but is expected any day, so until this comes to hand I shall just send the messages off myself. It will not cause great inconvenience financially at this end
[page break]
because there is so little I can buy with my allowance nowadays. I wonder often what kind of weather you had for your holiday and I imagine it was spent in the garden. I realise you are not very keen travellers these days. The summer is well on its way and I do not find it as hot as I anticipated Two days ago it reached 110°F in the shade and yesterday was hotter. I don't know what the temp. was but imagine about 115°F. We have built ourselves a fireplace outside out of bricks and sand to try and economise in fuel which is almost non-existent. By putting the water outside in a jug for a couple of hours before using it, the sun heats it so much that it is almost too hot to put ones hand in. The metal of the jug becomes too hot to touch. Tea is especially refreshing but ten minutes after drinking it the whole lot oozes out in perspiration. I find if I perspire I can walk around in the hottest sun and not feel the heat of the rays on account of my body being damp. By wrapping our water & wine bottles, also Red Cross butter tins, in wet rags, the evaporation is so terrific that the cooling effect is wonderful. The butter remains solid during 110° outside. Try this round your milk bottles in August. When I get home I shall be able to save you a small fortune after the experience gained out here. What will be the use of tables & table-clothes and crockery etc? I can show you much more primitive substitutes. One doesn't live until one is Interned?? & then one lives to exist, sorry I mean exists to live. All my love & thoughts to you both always. Chins up & keep smiling. Douglas.

15 items. Two oral history interviews with Squadron Leader Bill Lucas DFC (1917 - 2018, 1255396 Royal Air Force), his log book, brief memoir and photographs. He served as a pilot with 9, 15, 139 and 162 Squadrons. After the war he ran in the 1948 Olympics.
The collection was catalogued by Trevor Hardcastle.
Requires
A related resource that is required by the described resource to support its function, delivery, or coherence.
William (Bill) Ernest Lucas was born in Tooting Bec, London on the 16th January 1917, 3 years deep into World War One. Luckily for Bill he was not of age to endure with the fighting in the trenches. However, when Europe was engulfed into another worldwide conflict in 1939, this set way for Bill to become involved with the RAF and IBCC.
Growing up, Bill was an only child and left his school (Bec Grammar School) at the age of 15. He managed to get a job with a printers, which led to his second and only other job at an insurance company called the London and Lancashire. The company’s sports club enabled Bill to find his passion for athletics (especially running) and he was expected to participate in the 1940 Olympics until the war interfered. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30884)
A photo of Bill in his running gear is shown in https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30865 where he is running down 55 Graham Road in Surrey.
Bill instead competed in the 1948 Olympic Games as the games were also cancelled in 1944 due to World War Two. Luckily the games were hosted in London (https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/london-1948) and Bill had retired from IBCC meaning that he had time to participate.
As seen in ‘Bill Lucas and the 1948 London Olympics’ (1948) https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30866 Bill managed to come 6th in the Second Heat meaning he was one position off of being in the final on the 2nd August 1948! This collection also includes Bill in his older prime wearing his 1948 Olympic Games jacket and the official Olympic Games programme from 1948.
When Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939, Bill was 22 years old meaning that he was eligible to be part of Great Britain’s Army. Combining Bill’s hatred of the sea and his fathers recent experiences in the trenches, the RAF seemed to be the most compatible choice with Bill. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg)
Bill was not involved in Britain’s mightiest air conflict against Hitler’s Luftwaffe however, instead watching ‘The Few’ defeat the Nazi aircrafts and succeed. Being considered to be Nazi Germany’s first ‘major military defeat’, this allowed for Britain to continue fighting in the war (https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/our-history/anniversaries/battle-of-britain/ and to an extent, allowed Bill to continue his path of becoming an Squadron Leader.
It was November 1940 when Bill started his pilot training, but due to a bomber offensive being the only way to properly counter the Nazis, this was huge not just for Bill but Britain as a whole. There had never been a bomber offensive before in warfare. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg
As seen in Bill’s official Pilot’s Log Book: (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/24264/LLucasWE122826v1.1.pdf) his training consisted of being part of 16 Elementary Flying School at RAF Derby from 1940 to 41 , 8 School of Flying Training at RAF Montrose in 1941 and 20 Operational Training Units at RAF Lossiemouth in 1941 . He flew three different types of aircraft during his training, Miles Magister, Miles Master and Wellington I’s.
Bill’s training finally finished in August 1941 and he was posted to his first official squadron, IX Squadron at Honington. Here he flew the Wellington Bomber.

While working there, he developed his talent for athletics with the Belgrave Harriers, with his best discipline being the 5000 metres. His goal was to compete at the 1940 Olympic games. However, in 1940, Bill was called up to help the war effort and mindful of his father’s advice to avoid the army and his own dislike of the sea, he chose to join the RAF.
Initially he trained as a fighter pilot on Miles Magisters and Miles Masters, but by the time he had finished training, the Battle of Britain had been won and the need for bomber pilots was more urgent. So, he was reallocated to bombers and trained to fly the Wellington at RAF Lossiemouth. Bill Lucas · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
Following completion of pilot training in August 1941, he was posted to RAF Honington and joined 9 Squadron flying Wellingtons. He flew 14 operational sorties – notably Cologne and Hamburg – before converting to Stirlings at RAF Waterbeach. He then joined 15 (Bomber) Squadron at RAF Wyton, flying the Short Stirling and, by August 1942, Bill had completed a full tour of 30 operational sorties (over 40 operations in total). Bill experienced tense encounters with German defences, having to take evasive action and also getting caught in a cone of five or six searchlights. To get out of the searchlight glare he had to do things with the aircraft which it was never meant to do. Returning from one mission they flew too close to Kiel and the airframe amassed a lot of bullet holes and an alarming loss of fuel. Crossing the North Sea, the tank indicators showed practically nothing and they had to divert into Woodbridge in Suffolk. The groundcrew estimated there was less than twenty-five gallons of fuel left (probably less than 6 minutes of flying time).
He was released from operational duties and was posted to RAF Lossiemouth as a flying instructor. Then in December 1944, he returned to operational flying and was posted to 162 Squadron, part of the Pathfinder force, to fly the Mosquito, an aircraft he described as “a bit quicker and more responsive; a nice aeroplane”. He completed a further 34 operational sorites with 162 Squadron, including missions over Kiel, Berlin, Hannover and Magdeburg. In recognition of his war services, Bill was awarded the DFC and was Mentioned in Despatches.
Squadron Leader Bill Lucas was released from the Service in January 1946 and returned to the insurance job he had left to join the RAF. Eventually, he left the company to become an insurance broker. He also returned to athletics and the Belgrave Harriers; he ran in various internationals and competed for Great Britain in the 5000m at the 1948 London Olympics. Athletics remained with him for the rest of his life and he gave his spare time freely, working in prominent roles in the administration of athletics. He remained a Belgrave Harrier committee member well into his 90s. He became known as “the golden voice of British Athletics” for his many years as stadium announcer at the White City .
In his later years, Bill remained prominent in RAF and Aircrew Associations. He, along with a small Band of Sussex veterans, was instrumental in helping to raise funds for the construction of the Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park and the International Bomber Command Centre.

9TH JULY 1942.
My Dearest Mother, Have now received most of your letters up to the 19TH April also one or two from Jack, Bust, & Harry. Lorna’s also arrived about a week ago. They are taking anything from 2 to 4 1/2 months. Am sory [sic] to hear that Jimmy Beattie has been so ill. Some of the fellows put on a very good variety show last week called “Fanfare.” We all enjoyed it very much. There is a lot of talent in the camp so the shows are usually as good as anything that the E.N.S.A. people put on in England. Have just finished an Empire versus British Isles Cricket match which lasted two days. Am afraid we lost pretty badly. The English team made 82 & 91 and we made 38 & 65. I made 8 first innings but only 2 in the second. There have been some very exciting Rugby matches (Inter Block). Have only played one game so far but it is usually too hot I think & the pitch is very dusty. There is a good team of S. Africans who have cleared the board so far & are going to play the “rest” soon so it should be a very good match. Have received 3 parcels from Egypt for which many thanks. How often are they being sent. No personal clothing parcels from you yet but one from England & 2 book parcels. In future can you put about half chocolate in clothing parcels as have quite enough clothes to get along with. Chocolate is much more welcome. Why won’t the S. African Red Cross allow you to send more parcels? I hope you have received my previous letters as you never mention them. Chins up & very much love to you all
Donald.

My Dear Folks
I hope that by this time you will have had some news of me, and will have ceased to worry, - it being 3 weeks now since I descended upon Deutchsland – I have very little news for you, except to say that I have met some old acquaintances in this my new & I think permanent camp. I now consider myself very lucky to be still breathing, and am therefore in no position to grumble at my predicament. All the same, I would like to be in England & still scrapping.
[underlined] You will now have received all my persona stuff, [/underlined] and I would ask you to keep it in good condition as I may need it again sometime. Please smear my gun with grease (including bore & breach-block) and see that it does not rust. As for my car, I leave it to you, you may like to run it during the summer, or may deem it better to sell.
I made an error in my last note, in saying that you could send me food. This is incorrect. Please donate £10 to the “Red Cross” on my behalf, and state that you want a certain number of invalids comforts parcels sending to me – say that they should be sent as often as possible, and that you will make a further donation later. Stress that they must consist of Robinson's Barley, Groats, Quaker oats, or substitute, and tinned milk. Also some Halibut oil capsules and laxative pills – e.g. Pil Cholelith. These things will ensure that I do not suffer from the stomach trouble which you remember I experienced during part of my training.
The Red Cross will inform you of the manner in which clothes parcels may be sent. I understand that a little chocolate can be enclosed, but please make enquiries first. My love to Basil by cable please, and belated Happy Returns to Gwen.
Your Loving Son.
Alan

Madam,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your husband, Pilot Officer Kenneth James Broderick, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 8/9th July, 1942, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out to bomb Wilhelmshaven and failed to return. This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquires will be made through the International Red Cross Committee and as soon as any definite news is received, you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your husband is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
Mrs. K. J. Broderick,
C/o Mrs. Larrington,
Lindon House,
Coningsby.
