674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

My dearest,
Thank you [underlined] so [/underlined] much for ringing up last night. It is an awful shame that you have to hang about so long to do it, and I really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. You can't think how happy & cheerful it makes me that night & all next day to [underlined] know [/underlined] you are safe. Now it looks as tho' the weather has broken so perhaps you won't be so busy.
What did you think of Churchill's speech last night? Considerably more cheerful than usual, but I didn't like his warning about our using gas against Germany if they do against Russia. It's only wise of course, & just as well to warn the Huns, but still it sends rather a cold shiver down the spine. I suppose we're bound to have to face it sometime. I have been trying Frances in her gas mask again, and she simply hates it now. So I've just rung up the warden to see if I could get a Mickie Mouse gas mask for her, & the warden is going to bring one round this morning to try on. I really must get her used to it somehow. She's not a bit frightened to see us in our masks, but she was a bit sick after she'd been in hers, - probably the smell. Incidentally I do hope you do not have to carry the beastly stuff over to the Huns. I suppose there's really no great difference between that or bombs, or only a sentimental one, but still I should hate the thought of
[page break]
you having to do the dirty work.
Thanks ever so for your letter I'm sending the latest photo herewith on postcards, which please review & return, letting me know if you'd like a decent print of any of them for yourself.
With all my love - hoping you'll be home pretty soon now.
Yours always,
[underlined] Ursula [/underlined]

Thanks him for ringing as it makes her happy and cheerful knowing he is safe. Asked his views on Churchill's speech but did not like his view on using gas on Germany. Writes of how much baby Frances dislike her gas mask and that she will try and get a Micky Mouse one. Hopes he will not have to carry gas to the Germans. Concludes with fact that sending photographs postcards.

No.? - Oh hell, I don't know!
Lido
May 11th Tuesday.
Johnny my dearest,
That rain we had on Sunday evening continued all night and has done an awful lot of good. I have put in some dwarf French beans, & radishes, and another row of perpetual spinach because the first lot you sowed under the roses is mostly gaps. The potatoes are now through, at least those on the further side of the onions are, I suppose those were the Epicures, & the heavier ones the Sharps Express, because I believe Epicure are the earlier of the two. Some of the artichokes are through too. I have staked the first two lots of peas - one third now is just coming through - and the whole thing is beginning to look more like something. I told you over the phone that I'd put in 2 rows of main crop carrots. I'm wondering now if that's going to be enough. We have actually eaten our way through last year's crop which were stored - They'd kept alright but were a rather worm-eaten lot to start with. However they're gone now.
[page break]
I'm probably only going to put 10/- of the money you sent into our joint P.O. book because I've had some extra expenses, viz having the kitchen sink mended (it was leaking) which cost 6/6, shoes repaired etc. The gas bill, which I've paid, is £1. 1. 9. & as far as I can make out from the wee bookie, there's precious little left in House a/c, something over £1., so I hope no more bills come this month. The telephone has been paid too, the toll charges which I queried were left over from December & were in order. Of course I'm only embezzling 10/- of what you sent, the £1 goes toward your tennis racquet which I hope to collect on Thursday, as there's a rather nice concert on that day.
What do you suggest for Ann's birthday? The 21st is getting very close. I suppose a book is best but have no idea what she'd like.
Frances is not taking kindly to her new gas mask, so I'm going very cautiously & not forcing matters, because as far as I can see, if she won't wear it willingly, nothing but brute force will keep it on in an emergency & that would be very trying for all concerned. Let's hope it will never happen tho' I think it quite possible.
All my love to you darling
Ursula.
