Dear Vic
I received a letter from Pamela today in which she tells me of the recent unfortunate happenings which have befallen you, so I thought I would rally round and try to write a few lines with the intention of attempting to relieve the browned off feeling you must be experiencing. I am afraid that I am rather badly cheesed myself so that it is going to be a pretty miserable effort.
Thank God this course is almost ended and then I shall be able to bale out of this bloody awful place. Let me know the number of this O.T.U. you are on and I shall have a shot at getting myself posted there. It may be a bit of a dump, but I have a feeling that between us we could put things in order.

2/
Seeing as how this is a letter to yourself exclusively, may’be I shall be allowed to be bit more free with what I write, and how I write it.
I heard a story the other day which I thought was damned good, if you have heard it before it's just to bloody bad for here it is again. I may have some difficulty in faithfully portraying the broken English part of the dialogue, but nevertheless, I'll have a go at it.
"A Yorkshireman who was by way of profession a travelling salesman, was having lunch in a London restaurant. Sitting at a nearby table was a Frenchman who kept taking something from a small snuff box arrangement, holding it to his nose, and softly murmuring "ah wonderful, beautiful".
The Yorkshireman watched this proceedure [sic] for a while until finally his curiosity gained the upper hand, and he ventured to ask the Frenchman what he was up to. It appeared that the Frenchie was a travelling salesman also, and that every time he left Paris

he took a few hairs from his wifes’ "thing" (nicely put, that) and when he was lonely he would have a sniff and everything would be grand once more.
The Yorkshireman thought this was a bloody good idea so the next time he set off from Leeds on his travels, he pulled out a handful, stuck them in a cigar box, and set off. He happened to lunch in the same London restaurant and he placed the cigar box on the table, occasionally taking out the contents, putting them to his nose, and saying "by lad, that's bloody good".
The Frenchman was lunching there once again too, and seeing that his colleague had followed his advice, he made bold to enquire as to the satisfaction it was according. He was invited to "have a do thee sel lad," and after delicately sniffing, was heard to say,

4/
"Ah m'sr, it ees beautiful, it ees wonderful; but m'sr as one connoisseur to another, a trifle near zee arse yes."
It is a pretty crude story I know, and may'be it is my distorted sense of humour, but personally I think it is damned funny.
I met Thornton, who was I believe, your navigator on 51 while he was here doing a bombing leader's course. I had a bit of a session with him one night down in Louth, but his course is finished now and I believe he has gone back to Dishforth.
Paddy Colman – ex 58, A Flight – has arrived to commence the next bombing leader's course, complete with "galloping horses" and D.F.M. It's bloody marvellous how these blokes do it, must be personality or something.
When am I going to have the dubious pleasure of saluting you, you old horse?

5/
I remember some time ago, your making some kind enquiry as to how my latest affaire d'amour was progressing, so now if this letter has not already brought you a frown or a yawn, I shall tell you all about it. Her name is Ada, a nice simple girlish sort of name. I like nice simple girlish names, they're so damned easy to remember when you're tight. Honestly though Vic, I don't think I'll forget this ever. She is a real corker, she has a face and figure which send me into a slight swoon everytime I think of her. She is a blonde, quite definitely, and defying the statement of some poor misguided youth who used the expression "dumb blonde", she is a pretty brainy sort of a [indecipherable word], and often ties me up in knots with some damned silly thing.
[page break]
6/
I am seriously thinking of popping the question. I wish to hell I had taken that other ring back, although no, I suppose it would be a pretty low sort of a thing to do, even for a low type like myself.
I expected to finish here on Good Friday and intended nipping up home smartly for a day or two before proceeding to my next station wherever it may be, but I have just been informed that we must stay here until after Easter owing to travelling restrictions. I wired the news to Ada, and she wired back to say that she would come down here for the holiday. Big doings next week end boy.
Well, I shall have to close now, for ai want to write and thank Pamella for her letter before hitting the hay. You don't mind if I write to your wife do you? It doesn't make any difference if you do anyway.
Cheerio old boy, take care of yourself. Your old pal Maurice

My Dear Mother & Dad,
I wrote to you three days ago enclosing with my letter photographs of the last show, and as I promised I am enclosing three more now, one of the “Cowboy & Lady” another showing our “Mad Scientist” and a third one of the “Chorus”. All the wheels and levers of the “Mad Scientists” Machine worked by means of a gramophone motor secreted in the “innards”. It was amazingly built and certainly a queer contraption. On Sat. the boys presented a pantomime called “Snow-white & the 7 Dwarfs” the last show of the season. Doubtless photographs will be available at a later date. Snow-white was played by the centre girl of the chorus, in the enclosed ‘photo. She is an excellent “Girl”. On Saturday your letter No. 16. written on Feb. 11th arrived, a little out of sequence. The only one missing of the first nineteen written is No. 11 and I am quite prepared to believe it will come along one of these days. So you see your mail is arriving quite satisfactorily. I do wish my letters reached you equally well, but I am hoping there will be an improvement now because we are once again enabled to use the Consular route. This is the third letter sent this way and we are told that the time of delivery may be six weeks. I am anxious to know if this will be the case. I believe there is a new scheme afoot whereby we can cable from here and the expenses are paid at the other end. I have put my name down on the list to take advantage of the scheme in case of emergency, but I much prefer to
[page break]
continue with the present pre-paid system. So far this has served its purpose ideally, and therefore, as I say, I shall only revert to the new idea in the event of something unusual arising. You seemed worried about my “thinner” because of the photos Pickles sister showed you. I was specially weighted with the boxing team the other day, & in shorts & shirt weighed 10 stones 1 lb. This should put your mind at rest. I’ll try & get a few close up ‘photos taken when we can get fresh negatives, in shorts alone. I have been doing P.T. regularly for over a month, taking advantage of the opportunities offered before the arrival of the hot weather. The last few days have been considerably cooler with plenty of cloud, and this has exterminated the few flies which the previous hot weather had started. There has been quite a batch of new arrivals and a certain amount of shifting about has resulted. We are still in the same rooms but a Naval Petty Officer has moved in with Tony in place of the R.A.F. Flt. Sgt. Believe me we are hanging on to this room like grime death. It means nearly everything to us here, and were it not for the privacy and quietness it affords the “Camp Echo” would not be possible. I am hoping to send close up photos of this magazine we are running as soon as the prints I have ordered return from the town Photographer. I hope you will be having warmer weather now. You do appear to have experienced a rough winter, and I realise how much you will be looking forward to the days in the garden again. My thoughts are always with you both and I imagine just how you are jogging along. I hope you will continue to keep fit, we shall have a lot to make up for, one day. Until then, all my love & thoughts & best wishes as always. Douglas.

No 2 Lido 30th March
My darling Johnny there's nothing very exciting to report. I spent the morning doing a mammoth wash, at lunch-time I typed out the fire-watching rota, subsequently took Frances to town – the usual round. Mrs Hazard popped in this evening, as friendly, not to say gushing, as ever. Doug, Olivia's husband, was last heard of in Java, & they've had no news for some weeks. They're still hoping he's got to Australia, but a pal of his has wired from Ceylon & there's no word from him there. It is wretched for poor Olivia. I told her about your Mother, & she said she would communicate.
I went to the concert yesterday, after much heart

searching, & [underlined] thoroughly [/underlined] enjoyed it. They played a modern overture & Dvorak's New world Symphony, but the main item was Myra Hess playing Beethoven's 4th concerto – it was really grand. They seem to be getting quite enterprising at the Orpheum nowadays, they are having concerts every Sunday evening, & Russian ballet on Thursdays. It is nice to have something a bit nearer home – not that I intend to make a habit of going!
My leisure moments were occupied today in repairing the draining boards in the kitchen, the flap broke off entirely this morning – luckily there was nothing on it at the time, so I bought three new hinges, & had

a grand time sitting on the backdoor mat in a rubber-neck attitude screwing them on. I got some oranges for Frances today. I had a present from the RAF too, the vouchers for the extra 1/- a week increase in the family allowance. It starts next Thursday, & will not be unwelcome, since every little helps. Tomorrow I intend taking Frances up to the clinic to be immunised against diphtheria. She's got rather a runny nose again, but I don't think that will matter, she's quite well
in every other way.

I sent off the New Statesman to you this afternoon. I didn't include a letter, partly because I hadn't time to write it but mainly because I've gone all honest.
There was no letter from you this morning, but I'm hoping confidently for something tomorrow, so I'll leave this open in case there's anything to reply to. So goodnight my dearest one. My thoughts are always with you, you seem so near to me & you are so very precious. Could you point out to the Adjutant that his telegram arrived too late for you enjoy the extra 24 hours leave & so you'll take

it next weekend & make it 48 hours? I'm sure he'd understand.
[underlined] Tuesday [/underlined] My darling, your letter of Sunday has just arrived, together with one from Frank, which I enclose herewith. He sent a P.O. for 5/-, but in view of what you write about finding 4/- on your bed, & of the fact that I have only 4d to last till Thursday, I am purloining this for current expenses.. You can tell Frank you bought a present for Frances with it. I'm so glad you had such an easy [deleted] trip [/deleted] [inserted] journey [/inserted] with the [deleted] baled-out [/deleted] crew – they looked decent fellows, - & that you have satisfactory billets. It's good to know that the station is generally efficient too, quite a change for you. I agree that the oftener you fly (& the more you stooge

round in the air over England!) the better. It would be grand if you could have finished your ops. by the autumn.
As for your foolish argument about your loving me more than I do you, it's obviously useless to bandy words with one who ignores & certainly reverses the known facts, so we'll leave the matter – till next we meet. Florence is spring-cleaning our bedroom this morning, & when she's gone I propose to turn out all the cupboards. I notice you did not number your letter – perhaps it would be as well to do so. With all my love to you for ever, my darling (even if you [underlined] do [/underlined] think it's only half as much as yours) Yours always Ursula
PS. If you [underlined] want [/underlined] to give me an Easter Egg, do try & get a photo taken of yourself, in Lincoln or somewhere. P.P.S.I believe Lincoln Cathedral is very lovely.
