John Russell's F543A Record of service
Description
An account of the resource
John was ground crew, initially a Flight Mechanic Engines from 12 February 1943, having gained experience he received further training to Fitter II E from 19 October 1943. He was promoted to LAC 1 November 1944 and then corporal 1 November 1945. He joined the service in 14 January 1942 and was demobilised in 8 January 1947, he served mainly in Great Britain but was in Egypt from 27 March to 6 September 1945.
The donor kindly provided this additional information. 'My father recounted a number of anecdotes about his service and one concerns the entry on his service record where you will see it just says Cheddington. As you will be aware RAF Cheddington was at that time a USAAF base. I cannot verify this it is only what my father told me. The reason for the week at Cheddington was due to a dispute between Bomber Command and USAAF around the turn around time of the four engined heavies. The RAF said the Americans were taking too long compared to the RAF for engine servicing or replacements, not sure exactly but it resulted in a group of RAF personnel going to Cheddington to show them how the RAF did it. As I recall father said he was somewhat surprised to find rows of USAAF service personnel sitting on chairs in front of the aircraft while the RAF changed all four engines and brought the aircraft back on line.
He also told me about being on crash duty for the returning aircraft and of one instance when the airfield was attacked and having to run for the shelters.

[black and white photograph of 12 Squadron officers at RAF Binbrook Officers Mess in 1942]
Wellington W5421 and F/Lt. Roy Langlois’s crew and the Belgian Comet Escape Line
On the 5th August 1941 at 22.25 hour a Vickers Wellington II bomber W5421 PH-G of 12 Squadron took off from RAF Binbrook bound with 12 other Wellingtons for a raid on the railway marshalling yards in the German city of Aachen. The crew of the aircraft were twenty-four year old pilot F/Lt. Roy Brouard Langlois D.F.C., F/Sgt. Richard Alfred Copley the radio operator age 21, Sgt. Jack Lamport Newton the front gunner, Sgt. John Warren McLarnon the second pilot, Sgt. Harold Joseph Edwin Burrell the navigator, and Sgt. R. D. Porteous RNZAF, the rear gunner.
[black and white photograph of crashed Wellington aircraft]
The Wellington had engine trouble just south of Aachen and was unable to bomb the target. The crew then jettisoned their bombs 15 to 20 miles from the target and turned for home. Over Antwerp the starboard engine caught fire and they began to lose height to 800 feet and they realised they could not reach England.
At first they thought they would ditch in the sea off the Belgian coast but after being caught by searchlights and forced to take evasive action they realised they would have to crash-land. Newton in the front turret saw what he thought in the moonlight was two rivers but in fact was the Antwerp-Deurne airfield in occupied Belgium. The plane did a wheels down landing at 02.19 on the 6th August.
The Germans at the time were under cover in shelters, as other bombers unable to reach Antwerp by their deadline were jettisoning their bombs near the airfield. That gave the crew nearly half an hour to destroy the aircraft to prevent it falling into enemy hands and escape, Newton firing 12 emergency flares into the fuselage before a German fire-tender arrived. The Germans probably believed the crew had been trapped in the burning aircraft and only in the morning light realised that there were no bodies in the plane. This gave the crew valuable time to climb the barbed wire and escape. After climbing the fence they split into two groups of three. The second pilot, observer, and rear gunner going one way, and Roy Langlois, Richard Copley, and Jack Newton, another.
[four black and white photographs of the aircrew (1) Roy Langlois while evading. (2) Jack Newton. (3) Richard Copley. (4) Langlois & Copley in Brussels]
[page break]
The second group evaded capture and eventually made contact with the Belgian BEAVER-BATON escape line. F/Lt Roy Brouard Langlois (nicknamed Daddy Long Legs) was later captured and finished up as a POW in Stalag Luft III at Sagan. He took part in ‘The Great Escape’ on March 24th 1944 but was recaptured and returned to Sagan. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and attained the rank of Wing Commander before retiring from the RAF in 1962. He died in 1993 aged 76.
F/Sgt. Richard Copley. Around the 1st October 1941 a red headed English or Irish infiltrator was spotted outside Vandenhove’s house where Roy Langlois, Richard Copley, and a Scottish solder named Ahearn were hiding. On the morning of the next day there was a terrific thumping on the door, the men looked out and saw three cars, the Geheime Feldpolizei were raiding the house. As the door was smashed in the three Brits grabbed their clothes and rushed down to the basement. Vandenhove had built a tunnel from the kitchen to the main sewer in the street. Two days previously he had checked that the exit from the sewer through a manhole in the street was free but when the three evaders tried to lift the manhole they were unable to move it. They were forced to stay in the sewer. Meanwhile back in the house Vandenhove had already been arrested. The evaders’ hiding place was given away by the family dog they had befriended. The Germans shot the dog and the airmen and soldier were trapped in the sewer for seven hours before they had to return to the kitchen and give themselves up. Richard Copley returned to England on April 26, 1945 after nearly four years in German prisoner of war camps.
[black and white photograph of Jack and Mary Newton]
Sgt. Jack Newton was the first British airman to be helped by the Belgian Comète escape line. He had been found two days after the crash by a member of the Belgian resistance. The leader of his helpers was a twenty four year old girl called Dedee who took Jack and two other airmen across France to the Spanish border on public transport dressed as peasants. They were met by a Spanish Basque guide who took them on foot across the Pyrenees to San Sebastian. Safely in Spain but not safe from arrest, Newton was covertly driven in the British ambassador’s personal car to the Madrid embassy where he was interned in the Embassy chapel until he could be smuggled out of Spain into Gibraltar on January 4th 1942. On arrival he was handed a £1 note, a cheese sandwich, and told to make his way to London for interrogation.
He received no recognition or awards for escaping enemy territory but was promoted to Pilot Officer on September 1st 1942.
He and Mary went on to have a long, happy marriage blessed with three children and ten grand-children. After the war Jack Newton’s adventures were related in a book – Evader: The Epic Story of the First British Airman to Be Rescued by the Comete Escape Line in World War II by Derek Shuff.
In that book is a dedication by Jack – To flight Lieutenant Roy Langlois DFC; who saved my life; to Countess A. de Jongh (Deedee), who gave me those extra years of freedom. And to my wife, Mary, who never gave up hope.
The other three crewmen from Wellington W5421 were Sgt. John Warren McLarnon the second pilot, Sgt. Harold Joseph Edwin Burrell the navigator, and Sgt. R.D. Porteous RNZAF, the rear gunner.

After splitting off from Langlois, Copley and Newton, the three airmen knocked at the door of a farmhouse at Lierre near Antwerp. The farmers daughter and some other people on the farm hid them for the night and gave them overalls to wear. The next day they were taken to Antwerp and were hidden in a house in Geulincxstraat until the 9th September. During this time false papers were prepared and arrangements made to get them to Lisbon.
On the 9th September they left Antwerp by train and were met in Brussels by a Mrs Harris who told them she originated from Birmingham. She took them to the Rue Washington where they stayed 2 nights with Jean Vandenhove. (the house where Langlois and Copley were later captured on October 2nd).
On the night of the 11th they were taken to the station by Mrs Harris and left Brussels guided by a Major Du Normand bound for Besancon. On arrival at Besancon they went by bus to St. Laurent near Lake Geneva where they stayed the night. The three crossed into Vichy France at 3pm on the 13th September 1941. They were to rendezvous at a cafe a few kilometers outside St. Laurent, taken by taxi to St. Claude and then by train to Toulouse.

Account of crash of Wellington W5421 and Flt Lt Roy Langlois's crew and Belgian Comet escape line
Description
An account of the resource
Includes photographs of twelve squadron officers, the crashed aircraft, some of the crew, Jack and Mary Newton and Sgt R D Porteous. Recounts the last sortie of the crew to Aachen when they had to jettison their bombs, an engine caught fire and they crash landed the aircraft near Antwerp. Crew escaped after setting aircraft on fire and made contact with the Belgian Beaver-Baton escape line. They split into two groups of three. Reports then list the subsequent fate of all the crew, Jack Newton being the only one to get safely home to England - the other two in his subgroup were captured. The other three were sent on by the escape line to Vichy France but report does not say their eventual fate.

My dear Douglas.
I have just seen Dad off to business, on a dark, bitterly cold winter morning. The ground is frozen hard & Dad’s footsteps went crunch crunch [sic] on the frozen snow. Now the bus has just arrived. I can hear it, as I am sitting here quietly beside a comfortable fire. I am wondering, as always, what you are doing, if it is a dark cold wintry morning with you too & if you are up yet. I know how routine is your life at present but you have never told us just how it goes. Are you up early & to bed early? I have written many letters to you since we had our last ones from you on Dec. 15th & in so many of them I’ve told you of the joy & pleasure they [inserted] your letters [/inserted] have given me. You know my old habit of leaving the daily papers & letters on the dining room table. It is still the same, & your last six letters and your latest cable are always before my eyes & often, when (to quote one of your letters) “the pill is very bitter” I read one of them & thus bridge the great distance which separates us. I love to read of your doings & tho’ I do understand so well just how weary you
[page break]
do become I feel deeply thankful that you are all right & we can keep on praying & hoping for glad reunion. I am glad you get so much pleasure from your games & tournaments & that you have access to a few good books. How are the dogs & what kind are they? I can understand the name R.A.F. [deleted] but [/deleted] but why Wimpy? Was it a poor little whining animal when the camp adopted it? & how do the animals fare with so many masters? To revert to your letters. When the next ones arrive my present “lot” will be put away with the others until you come back. I often take out one at random & always find the news interesting whether from Miss Morton’s place Hut 190 or “Bogus” days. One day we will revive these memories, gay & grave, together. A letter from Mrs Banks on Monday tells that Walter is in Lincolnshire now. She is fearful that he may be sent away. Vincent is still in Scotland. Maurice Holme is a P.T. instructor in the R.A.F. Now love there’s nothing new to tell you. Presently I shall set out in search of meat but not the kind you recall in one of your recent letters. Very much of our food is rationed now & we do feel that Lord Woolton has been the right man in the right place. Everybody has a share & there is no queueing (have I put to many es). Have no further news of John. I will say Goodbye to you now love & after the daily round, a very short one today, is finished I shall go to Nelson & send a cable to you. These cables are so precious. Just fancy! without them our latest news of you would be Sept 17th. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

My Dear Mother & Dad,
Since I wrote to you last I have been pleased to receive three further letters from you dated December 1st, 14th & 17th and one from Dorothy dated December 20th. Your letter of December 14th said that Auntie Gladys had started going to business, and that John was stationed in South Africa. He is very fortunate. Your letter of the 17th acknowledged receipt of six of my letters after such a long absence, and I do hope that these will continue to arrive regularly now. I was glad to learn from Dorothy’s letter that the communal letter I wrote to Calverley arrived at its destination. I also wish to thank both Dorothy & Mary for the letters I receive from them quite regularly, I do appreciate them. To-day I sent off the following telegram for Mother’s birthday:- “Many happy returns Mother’s birthday all love wishes” and I sincerely hope it will arrive in time. There is no need to say just how much my thoughts will be with you on the 19th. My thoughts are always with you really so you may say that we are not separated in the very sense of the word. I am enclosing with this letter a photo taken when the Padre visited us before Christmas, it was a little warmer then, than it is now. Just at present the weather is particularly cold. I hope to send another small photograph soon showing how we did cooking at Aumale. It will give you an idea of the primitive methods employed. There appears to be a temporary (we hope) shortage of cigarettes and we are having to roll our own from Arab pipe tobacco which is being supplied in very small quantities. My method is to
[page break]
moisten the gum of an envelope and run the cigarette paper edge along this, then wrap it round the stem of a pencil so that it forms a hollow tube, and stick the gummed edges. By using a small piece of cotton wool in one end a useful “filter tip” is provided, and this also serves to prevent tobacco from dropping out. The whole idea is very unorthodox and doubtless would hurt a seasoned cigarette roller, but it serves a useful purpose for me. Tony, who was interested in advertising & press work in civilian days started producing a weekly paper which he called the “Camp Echo” It includes articles written by different people in our midst, based on all kinds of things. Some experiences, others informative, or comical etc. Also cartoons & limericks. We have just acquired a typewriter from Algiers, & as I appear to be the only person who has had much typewriter experience the lot of “printing” has fallen on my shoulders. This week we produced 24 pages & believe me the task was no light one as several of the copies we receive have to be cut, punctuated & generally reconditioned. It is interesting & quite informative. I wish I could send you an issue because some of the artists’ drawings are excellent. However, I hope to retain a copy as souvenir & we shall be able to go over it together on some future happy day. Reverting to the enclosed photo. The dog in front of me is not Raf but a later addition brought from Aumale. The jackal disappeared ages and ages ago when still a baby. We are re-cooking our Cous-Cous to-night in Red Cross milk, as we always do these days as it is thus rendered far more palatable, so I shall soon be occupied once again in the culinary category. Am writing a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Clayton & John. And now as ever I say good-night by sending you all my love, thoughts and best wishes.
Douglas
P.S. Jimmy is sitting immediately behind me in the group, wearing civilian jacket.

Reg ‘Jimmy’ Woolgar was born and schooled in Hove. He began working life as a valuations assistant and was training to be a surveyor, which was interrupted when, in December 1939, he joined the RAF. Although he had aspirations to become a pilot, he trained as a wireless operator/air gunner instead. His wireless operator training was carried out at the wireless training school, RAF Yatesbury. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/849/PWoolgarRLA1609.2.jpg His air gunnery training on Fairy Battle aircraft was conducted at RAF West Freugh. On 15 November 1940 he was promoted to sergeant and posted to No 10 OTU at RAF Upper Heyford. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/845/PWoolgarRLA1601.2.jpg Initially flying Anson aircraft and then Hampdens with C Flight, he had his first ‘Lucky Jim’ moment, on 6 February 1941, when his Hampden aircraft was forced to crash land in a field near Cottesmore, in Lincolnshire. The aircraft was written off, but he and the pilot survived with minor injuries. At the end of operational training, instead of going directly onto operasations, he spent the next 5 months as a screen operator instructor. Eventually, on 1 September 1941, he was posted to 49 Squadron, Hampdens, at RAF Scampton https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/852 where his very first operational trip (described as a baptism of fire) was to Berlin. With headwinds going out and coming back, and nil visibility, it was likely the crew would have to bail out. Fortunately, the skipper found a break in the clouds and the aircraft landed wheels down in a field near Louth. The aircraft had to be recovered back to base, transported by road, on a low loader. On another occasion, on a mine laying operation to Oslo Fjord, his aircraft was peppered with anti-aircraft fire, it returned to base with 36 bullet holes in the fuselage and mainplane. A bullet had also passed through the upright of his gun sight while he was looking through it, whilst another tore through his flying suit. The nickname ‘Lucky Jim’ was beginning to stick.
In February 1942, on an operation to Manheim, the port engine, hit by flak, cut dead. Despite jettisoning all superfluous weight, which unfortunately included all the navigation equipment, the aircraft rapidly lost height, and the pilot ditched the aircraft in the English Channel. Whilst the crew had struggled to keep the aircraft airborne, (on a single engine), it had steered on a massive curve and unbeknown to them was headed down the English Channel, before it ditched. The crew scrambled out onto the wing and managed to inflate the dingy, then had to cut the cord attaching the dingy to the aircraft using a pair of nail scissors, moments before it sunk. In the water for hours, the crew thought they were drifting near the Yorkshire coast, but were rescued by a motor anti-submarine boat, much to their surprise, near the Isle of Wight.
Operational flying was intense, Reg would feel wound up before take-off and there was much apprehension on the way out to the target. Often, they flew through intense flak that was sometimes so close they could smell it. There was always a sense of sense of relief once they came away from the target. In between operations, each day was treated as it came along with many off-duty hours spent socialising in the local hostelries https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/853
After his first operational tour (he completed two) he was commissioned and became gunnery leader with 192 Squadron in 100 Group.
After the war ended, he signed on for an extra two years and was posted to Palestine as an air movements staff officer. Luck was again on his side when, one day, he was on his way to an Air Priorities Board Meeting at the King David Hotel when the hotel was bombed, resulting in many army and civilian casualties.
After a short tour in Kenya, as Senior Movements Staff Officer, he returned to Palestine flying with 38 Squadron until August 1947. In his flying career he amassed over 1000 flying hours. For services to his country Reg was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/858
He was released from the RAF in September 1947. Initially employed as an assistant valuations officer, he studied to become a Chartered Surveyor and secured a job as a senior valuer with the City of London. He later became the planning valuer of the city. After 14 years he was made a partner at the firm St Quintin Son and Stanley. Reg retired in 1971.
