Interview with Gerlinde Keller
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Gerlinde Keller (b. 1939) was evacuated in 1942 from Munich to the Altmühltal, where she lived with her aunt in a purpose-built settlement. Explains how the intensifying bombings had made the city unsafe for children and how they managed to cope with wartime hardships: gathering mushrooms, wild berries and pine cones to be used as firewood; collecting fallen apples from a nearby orchard to make compote and strudel. Describes how her mother and her older brother went covertly into the forest to cut down trees at night. Emphasises her mother’s creative efforts in coping with the difficult situation and how she enjoyed the food available, for example berries with skimmed milk. Mentions the strange feeling of not belonging to anywhere and remembers the strict atmosphere of a school run by nuns, where pupils were subjected to corporal punishments. Remembers the defiant attitude of two girls, who provoked the teachers and showed a sense of pride in being punished.

Letter from L J Goddard to A D Boldy
World War (1939-1945)
Letter from L J Goddard, rector of St. Paul’s School, Jalapahar, to A D Boldy, the father of David and Stephen, two ex-pupils of the school. The letter is in response to a letter sent by Mr Boldy to the school, giving news of the two men, including the facts that David has been reported missing and Stephen is due to enter the forces shortly. Goddard is confident that Italy will be out of the war by the end of August 1943 and hopes that Germany will be beaten before the spring 1944.

Training as a flight engineer on Lancasters
Stanley Archer’s account of his training as one of the first flight engineers for Lancaster operations in 1942. First he attended an air gunnery course then transferred to 97 squadron at RAF Woodhall Spa. He comments on a daylight operation on Augsburg. Training continued for a month at Avro's at Chadderton then Woodford. This was ground based on Lancaster systems, there being no flying training. This was followed by a month at RAF St Athan on Halifaxes. He had previously worked as a fitter on Hurricanes and Spitfires and he considered the course a waste of time.

He describes how having an eight man crew and extra equipment affected the interior of the Lancaster bombers. He reads from “Fighting Back: British During Military Contribution in the Second World War” by Martin Sugarman throughout the interview.
