Tuesday. Dec. 30th. 1941.
My dear Douglas.
I have just been reading one of the 6 letters which arrived together on Dec. 15th. This one is dated August 24th. There are not many questions to answer but you mention Dad’s pipe. Yes he still smokes a pipe & smokes what tobacco he can get, Four Square, Rubicon, Legation, seem to be the usual blends. You know there has been a very acute shortage of cigarettes & tobacco, during the summer months especially. Things seem to be just a little easier in that respect just now. Dad’s cigarettes seem to be Capstan usually & he has been very fortunate in having a regular supply each week. No he didn’t buy new pipes. He’s using those in the rack. Were they yours? I seem to remember you trying to smoke “Bruno”. Farl is a Scottish word of 4 letters. I think it really represents a kind of meal. My baker sometimes stocks Farl biscuits. Grapes here are absolute luxury at 15/- (fifteen shillings a pound.) Tomatoes are now very scarce & are controlled at 2/- (two shillings) a pound. You mention roast beef & mutton but you would scarcely recognise them in war time guise. Our bit this

[inserted] week [/inserted] has borne a very striking resemblance to tallow candles. I have a notion that in its lifetime it trotted a lot of miles around the Australian bush or some such place. But we don’t grumble, we have a very great deal to be thankful for. This morning I had a letter from Mrs Hole, who seems very sad. Ted went abroad on Oct. 27th & they are very anxiously awaiting news from him. She tells that Harold was married at Skipton Parish Church on Dec. 24th. She has sent cake & a card with a request that I send the card on to you but as you know, that would not be allowed. I wonder if you received my letter telling that Don Chadwick was married in September. Joan Lander was married on July 5th. Dorothy Pell on August 12th. Geoffrey Holmes married Oct 29th. (Mrs Holmes’s Christmas letter brought that news, with a very nice photograph) This morning’s mail also included a New Year’s greeting from Mr & Mrs Green at Old Colwyn & such a nice letter from little Miss Smithies at Crumpsall. I have not heard [deleted] of [/deleted] [inserted] a [/inserted] word of, or from, Mrs Clayton since I went to see her on Dec. 18th. I wrote to her for Xmas at her brother’s house at Huddersfield, so far no response. Tomorrow a.m. I shall send a cable to you, in the hope you may receive it on New Year’s Day. This day we have the first real fog of winter with thick white frost. Seasonal, but not very comfortable. Now love Goodbye once again with all our love & thoughts & prayers. from Mother & Dad

Thursday 27/11/41.
My dear Douglas.
Dad is out again so I am sending just a few more lines to you hoping that you will receive some of my numerous letters. The days just pass away & I feel quite sad & bewildered when no letters come. It was nine weeks last Saturday since we had the last one. Of course we understand that very difficult circumstances obtain & if we can just keep in touch by cable we shall be most thankful. I wrote to you on Tuesday & mentioned having a letter from Mrs Clayton. She said that John was acheing [sic] [inserted] (is it spelt correctly?) [/inserted] for a letter from you – that he had written many times & was surprised not to hear from you. Which is rather surprising! & I thought John would understand your difficulties. Anyhow it was a great relief to me to know that he was still at the same place. Although circumstances are very different we still remember happily & affectionately “our boys” & the thought of him being sent away worries me a great deal. I am pleased to say that Dad is much better again & is now practically free from cold & cough. Last night Mr Chester, from next door, came in for a couple of hours & there is no doubt the company is good for Dad. The weather
[page break]
is wonderful for the end of November & this afternoon I had a grand walk up the hill – the air felt very fresh & nice. Yesterday I did a bit of digging up in the garden. It looks quite tidy today & I did wish you could have seen the birds which came for the scraps of food this morning. I’ve never had so many different kinds of birds to feed. This morning there was a magpie, a thrush, a chaffinch 4 tits & umpteen starlings & sparrows. I have a little robin, but he didn’t join the party this morning. Well love it is 9-30 so I will say Goodnight to you now & make a cup of tea & finish my letter in the morning. Always hoping I can tell you of precious letters received.
Friday morning & still no letters from you so I just keep on looking forward. A little message on the wireless this morning brings comfort & pleasure. “God gave us memories that we may have roses in December.” And mine are very lovely, bringing to me every day great happiness. Thank you love for all the happy memories you’ve given to me.
Presently I shall be setting out to do my shopping. It is quite an outing, as we are a 2 bus ride from town then I have to walk quite a long way to the shop at which I’ve registered. Really the walk does me good & it is really very pleasant to come back through the park. The town is typical, small industrial, & I am thankful we live well out of it. Goodbye love once again with all our love & thoughts & prayers & “Happy Christmas” from Mother & Dad.

This has been such a beautiful day & I’ve been thinking of you all the time. – of the lovely outings we used to have together on just such a day & always I am looking forward to our joyous reunion. It seems such a very long time since I had your letter dated August 28th – nine weeks last Saturday & it is a very great blessing that we have the privilege of the cables & again I am eagerly awaiting the reply to the one sent on Saturday. I have just been ironing, & listening in to our relay wireless. The old A. R. V. made very terrible noises (I think I told you in a previous letter) so we decided to get a speaker & have the benefit of the relay service which costs 1/- a week. There was no charge for installation so really it is very cheap & I’ve never done so much listening in & when I hear the men overseas exchanging messages with their [deleted] deary [/deleted] dear ones I just wish I could hear your voice too. I am wondering all this long time what you are doing & how you are faring in your new camp. You will enjoy the cooler weather if you are warmly clad & have enough food. It is such a worry when we can’t do any
[page break]
thing to help. Dad has got more cold, with a cough this time but he seems in better spirits this time. You know how quiet he is & how very “exciting” things are sometimes. Some weeks ago when we went to Manchester, (I sent you a cable the same day) Dad called to see Mr Allen but found a notice saying the office was closed on Saturday mornings so on Sunday Dad wrote him a little note giving what little news we had of you. This morning I had a letter from Mrs Clayton. She told that John was home on the 15th (as I told you he expected to be) but as usual was out a great deal & I am glad we were not there to interfere with his pleasure. It is a relief to know that he is still at the old spot. Mrs Clayton says John would like to know if you have received his letters as he is very much surprised that you have not written to him.
I’ve just been into the garden to look at my strawberry plants & they look “sad”. It requires more faith than I possess to visualise luscious fruit on them next summer. The apple tree has not yet arrived. There are no bulbs peeping yet. Seven years ago, when little nurse was with us at Worsley, the bulbs were showing about 2 inches out of the ground but it is rather cold & exposed here & no doubt growth will be somewhat retarded. Only four weeks to Christmas now, then we look for lengthening days again & always we look for peace & joyous homecoming. Meanwhile, always, all our love & thoughts & once again Happy Christmas from
Mother & Dad.

Sunday. Nov. 23rd/41.
My dear Douglas.
This is a typical November day and now at 3 p.m. I am just groping, by the light of a lovely fire, to write my usual Sunday letter to you. Outside there is that weird yellow light that we associate with a real November day & strangely enough although we’ve had a lot of rain – it is raining at present – we’ve not had very much fog, touch wood!!! We were recalling that very dreadful period of fog – just after we went to Manchester when you were not able to travel to school for a week. Do you remember it too? & do you have fog in Algerie? According to the book about Laghouat the climate is good tho’ the months of January & February are reputedly windy & cold. Well love I sent a short cable to you yesterday & am now eagerly awaiting a reply. We were afraid, in view of the very disturbed conditions in North Africa, that the cables might be stopped & I was so glad to learn that up to date the P.O. at Nelson had not been notified of any change. My message was only a short one “Delighted cable seventeenth. Eagerly await further news All love Hudson” with prepaid reply 5/6.
[page break]
We have not had a letter from you for nine weeks, & I was thankful indeed for the message on your last cable that you were getting my letters all right. I wonder if you have got the calendar I sent some weeks ago. I do hope you will be allowed to have it. Well love I seem quite at a loss for something to write about. We live the usual quiet uneventful life here & now that the garden is not accessible for a month or two we have to stay quietly indoors. This morning Dad (who seems much better again) has taken the heavy mower to pieces & has greased it & put it away but we have so little storage room in this smaller house & a very large wooden box in a corner of the garden does duty as a store-house. We have a very large lobby under the stairs which acts as store-room & air raid shelter & at present contains deck chairs garden shelter, type-writer, card table & umpteen bits & pieces. Today we are in the lounge which is very similar in shape but much smaller than the one at Moorside Rd. Instead of houses on the opposite side of this road there is a very high hedge which is still in full green leaf. Up & down the road (main road, you remember) the youth & beauty of Nelson is taking the, very damp, air. The girls are mostly very pretty but their Lancashire accent is not so attractive. Once again all our love & best wishes for Happy Christmas from Mother & Dad.

Thursday. Oct. 2nd/41.
My dear Douglas.
This is a real end of summer morning, still & damp & misty, & not exactly exhilarating. & I’ve been pottering around doing many odd jobs & not feeling in the least “workish [sic].” On Saturday last I sent you a cable acknowledging the two photographs which give me a great deal of pleasure. There is still no response to the prepaid reply but I’m still hoping. It is remarkable what a lot of good your messages give to me. I always feel as if I could move mountains after receiving definite news of your well-being. Last night Dad was on duty fire watching & I do dread these nights coming round. & am always very thankful when day dawns. Dad gets home at 7- a.m. & this morning went back at 8-20 instead of the usual 8-45. You ask about his business but there is so little I can tell you for the reason that you knew so well in the old days. After the perfectly hell-ish experience re business which started about a year ago (Dad finished at Buckley’s on Oct 18th.) I don’t ask much about things – but just keep on living a
[page break]
day at a time & hoping for the best. One good thing came from the “mess up”” last year, we have lived very peaceably & quietly here for some months, which has been very different from our previous experience & we are indeed thankful for that. As I’ve often told you in my letters our garden has been a great joy altho’ [sic] this morning is misty & our outlook restricted the “lake” gleams prettily at the foot of the garden & the cows are grazing placidly in the fields around. My neighbour has just run in with a handful of onions. It seems rather funny news doesn’t it but believe [inserted] me [/inserted] the shortage of flavouring ingredient last winter was by no means funny & onions are still almost as precious as gold. Grandad [sic] & Auntie went away on Tuesday & I feel rather quiet again. Grandad [sic] certainly was very happy & content with us & between you & me I don’t think he was really anxious to go. He said he felt better for the change & did look better. He is very wonderful for his age 80 [inserted next [/inserted] on January 2nd with all faculties unimpaired – in fact – if he had had charge of the terrible war it would have been over long ago. Well love my page is nearly used again so I must say Goodbye once more. I very often wonder what kind of philosophies are evolved from your cease-less arguings [sic] in camp but they will certainly be interesting & it is very often instructive too, to have the other fellows’ point of view. Our love & thoughts are with you always God bless you & keep you safe.
Mother & Dad.

Darling Johnny,
I am just going to the PO to send off a parcel of stuff to you & to Mrs Donaldson & have also written to her.
I have got the trunks down & am beginning to sort the clothes. Frances has got a bit of a sniffle again. There’s an awful lot of colds going about here, so I am keeping her indoors & giving
