Dear Mr Baker,
I have great pleasure in informing you that we have received information from the International Red Cross Society stating that your son, Pilot Officer D. A. Baker is a prisoner of war. One other member of his crew is also a prisoner, and two were unfortunately killed.
We have no news as to which prison camp they are in, but no doubt you will be receiving communications from them in the near future.
Everyone here is delighted about the news of your son’s safety.
Yours

Saturday Dec. 6th/41
My dear Douglas.
I have just said “Goodnight” to Dad who has gone on night duty again. We don’t like Saturday night duty as it means a long walk home on Sunday morning – no buses at such an early hour. Dad goes off just quietly cheerful. He really is remarkable in his placidity. Not up & down, all over the place, like the little old lady who gets very excited over the smallest trifle but there we are!! Well love I’ve mentioned in two previous letters how deeply touched we were by your kind message cabled last Saturday. Thank you again so very much, but we’ll wait until that great day for which we live – our joyous reunion - & then we will indulge in many treasures again. I was very delighted to receive a letter from Auntie Una this morning inviting us to go spend Christmas with them at Horsforth. She says “I’m afraid it will not be a very festive season, we have all too much on our minds at present, be [sic] we can certainly make the best of things & help each other along during these difficult times & to look forward to the better times that are surely ahead.
I do hope you get Good news of Douglas. We many times think & talk about him. Let me have his
[page break]
latest address, I want to send him a Christmas greetings cable. Walter has not been well again (his old trouble) & has had to have a few days in bed, & has to go very carefully. We hear fairly regularly from Joe.” and there my quotation must end. Dad is not sure about getting away on Christmas Eve & travelling is very difficult but we do hope we can go. We’ll let you know by cable as usual. I do wish I could get some letters from you. It is eleven weeks today since we got the last one & have remarked many times what a blessing we did get the letter with the photos dated August 8th. Just one after that dated August 28th. I wonder if you’ve still got your little dog & baby jackal & always I am wondering if you have enough food & clothing to keep you warm. Now love I will say Goodnight & finish my letter in the morning. The apple tree is still standing upright in spite of rather high winds which have the merit of removing & preventing fog. Sunday morning 8-10 & we’ve just finished breakfast. Dad had a good walk home in moonlight. As we cannot draw the curtains until 8-45 I thought I could finish my letter to you, then it will get to the post in good time but the post is any old how at the moment. No doubt when you receive this letter Christmas will be over so I will just say the season’s greetings for the New Year, all happiness possible under present conditions. All our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

Johnnie my darling,
I’m trying not to hope that I shall see you before you see this. The weather is pretty rotten here today, grey & gusty, but perhaps that’s how you like it for flying & will be able to do a flight today & so come home tomorrow. How I long for you - it’s worse than usual this time.
I’m going to try to get the cycle accessories you ask for this p.m, but will not post them in the hope that you may be home to take them back yourself.

Norman rang today to say that the vacuum cleaner has been sold in the meantime, but that the firm will keep the next one for us. There’s no immediate hurry anyway. And Mrs Lloyd, friend of Mrs Hillman, is moving house to a place where there is DC & is getting rid of some of her electrical equipment. She has an electric clock for the kitchen, one of those plain round cream-coloured discs, I gather, so I am enquiring what she wants for it, because it would be very nice for our future kitchen. Mrs Hillman murmured something about an electric fire too, tho’ she thought they might be able to use that on DC as well as AC.

But if it is available, do you think we should invest in it, if its reasonable in price? Unfortunately her vacuum is a Hoover which can be used on DC or AC.
You needn’t bother about my being bored to distraction if I lived in a farmhouse near you – there’s nothing I should like better, for a change, and the sewing & knitting I have to do for Frances is assuming mountainous proportions, with very little prospect of ever being reduced. The one snag about going away seems to be the confirmation classes. I met the Vicar yesterday, so I said to

vicar “Vicar” and vicar said “Yes”, & the upshot of it was, how & when [deleted] I a [/deleted] am I going to work in these classes? Its all very hard. Barbara says she will come too, so Frances can consider she has saved three souls with one baptism! Maybe I shall have to put it off till the confirmation in the summer after all. He asked how you were getting on with your chaplain, but I couldn’t say much about it.
I am keeping Frances in bed today as her cough & cold are not better & it’s a horrid windy day.
I’m simply longing to see you and kiss you again darling, I [underlined] do [/underlined] hope you manage to get home tomorrow
All my love
Ursula.
