Reg ‘Jimmy’ Woolgar was born and schooled in Hove. He began working life as a valuations assistant and was training to be a surveyor, which was interrupted when, in December 1939, he joined the RAF. Although he had aspirations to become a pilot, he trained as a wireless operator/air gunner instead. His wireless operator training was carried out at the wireless training school, RAF Yatesbury. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/849/PWoolgarRLA1609.2.jpg His air gunnery training on Fairy Battle aircraft was conducted at RAF West Freugh. On 15 November 1940 he was promoted to sergeant and posted to No 10 OTU at RAF Upper Heyford. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/845/PWoolgarRLA1601.2.jpg Initially flying Anson aircraft and then Hampdens with C Flight, he had his first ‘Lucky Jim’ moment, on 6 February 1941, when his Hampden aircraft was forced to crash land in a field near Cottesmore, in Lincolnshire. The aircraft was written off, but he and the pilot survived with minor injuries. At the end of operational training, instead of going directly onto operasations, he spent the next 5 months as a screen operator instructor. Eventually, on 1 September 1941, he was posted to 49 Squadron, Hampdens, at RAF Scampton https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/852 where his very first operational trip (described as a baptism of fire) was to Berlin. With headwinds going out and coming back, and nil visibility, it was likely the crew would have to bail out. Fortunately, the skipper found a break in the clouds and the aircraft landed wheels down in a field near Louth. The aircraft had to be recovered back to base, transported by road, on a low loader. On another occasion, on a mine laying operation to Oslo Fjord, his aircraft was peppered with anti-aircraft fire, it returned to base with 36 bullet holes in the fuselage and mainplane. A bullet had also passed through the upright of his gun sight while he was looking through it, whilst another tore through his flying suit. The nickname ‘Lucky Jim’ was beginning to stick.
In February 1942, on an operation to Manheim, the port engine, hit by flak, cut dead. Despite jettisoning all superfluous weight, which unfortunately included all the navigation equipment, the aircraft rapidly lost height, and the pilot ditched the aircraft in the English Channel. Whilst the crew had struggled to keep the aircraft airborne, (on a single engine), it had steered on a massive curve and unbeknown to them was headed down the English Channel, before it ditched. The crew scrambled out onto the wing and managed to inflate the dingy, then had to cut the cord attaching the dingy to the aircraft using a pair of nail scissors, moments before it sunk. In the water for hours, the crew thought they were drifting near the Yorkshire coast, but were rescued by a motor anti-submarine boat, much to their surprise, near the Isle of Wight.
Operational flying was intense, Reg would feel wound up before take-off and there was much apprehension on the way out to the target. Often, they flew through intense flak that was sometimes so close they could smell it. There was always a sense of sense of relief once they came away from the target. In between operations, each day was treated as it came along with many off-duty hours spent socialising in the local hostelries https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/853
After his first operational tour (he completed two) he was commissioned and became gunnery leader with 192 Squadron in 100 Group.
After the war ended, he signed on for an extra two years and was posted to Palestine as an air movements staff officer. Luck was again on his side when, one day, he was on his way to an Air Priorities Board Meeting at the King David Hotel when the hotel was bombed, resulting in many army and civilian casualties.
After a short tour in Kenya, as Senior Movements Staff Officer, he returned to Palestine flying with 38 Squadron until August 1947. In his flying career he amassed over 1000 flying hours. For services to his country Reg was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/858
He was released from the RAF in September 1947. Initially employed as an assistant valuations officer, he studied to become a Chartered Surveyor and secured a job as a senior valuer with the City of London. He later became the planning valuer of the city. After 14 years he was made a partner at the firm St Quintin Son and Stanley. Reg retired in 1971.

Lido Monday 10 Nov.
My darling Johnnie, I do so hope you got back to camp safely. I've been thinking about you anxiously all the time – at 11.30 pm.last night hoping you'd reached Paddington; at 6 am. hoping your train would leave to time, at 7 am. hoping you'd safely caught the camp bus or otherwise smuggled yourself in. I do hope you'll let me know as soon as poss how it all went, & whether the night at Banbury was too awful. Needless to say there's not much to report here. It's pouring with rain this morning, not much of a washing-day. It was so lovely to have you home for 24 hours, it always seems twice as long & as important as any ordinary twenty four hours, because nearly every minute is full of active enjoyment of your company.
Goodbye now darling, good luck & I do hope I'll see you soon again, all my love, Ursula

My dear Douglas.
I have been so busy sewing this evening & it is so warm that I didn’t notice the fire dying out & now I’ve been trying to coax it into blaze. In the old days no doubt I should have stuck a dozen or so matches in amongst the dying embers but not so today for matches are very precious indeed & Dad’s petrol lighter & the pilot light on my gas oven have both to work overtime. Now I’m wondering if you still have warm weather - at any rate it will not be so trying & difficult to bear as in the July & August days & if you have facilities for making a fire when the cool days of winter arrive. Strange how people worry about you in the heat of Africa. A letter from Miss Law a few days ago (the first we’ve had since we left [one indecipherable word]) expressed concern for you & did hope you did not suffer unduly. Auntie Lizzie wrote from Dewsbury & asked me to specially send to you love & best wishes for a speedy & safe return & also 5/-. I am going to try to send you one or two books if possible & will use the money with [inserted] on in [/inserted] the fund for the purpose. It is a very great relief that we have the cables as the letters
[page break]
are not coming through very well. August letters to date 2nd 8th with photos, & one nearly a fortnight ago dated 28th. & I’m afraid I should become very anxious if we [deleted] d [/deleted] could not exchange messages by cable. As I’ve previously told you it is always a very great joy & comfort to have your cabled messages. We are enjoying remarkable Autumn weather & today I walked through one of the pretty national parks here & had the unusual experience of walking amongst falling leaves - leaves of all shades & shapes - & the effect was almost enchanting - a very different world from the streets with rows & rows of houses & factories. Grandad was very interested in the long straight streets here he had not seen anything like them before. Yesterday I went to Cornholme to visit Mrs Banks & found very little change after very many years. So very many land - marks stirred memories - as ever - grave & gay. Mrs Banks is coming here for the day next Tuesday. She is just the same as ever - very sweet & kindly & I shall enjoy having her to visit me. Well love I will say Goodnight now as it is getting late & I have little interesting news for you. We had fog yesterday evening but rain cleared it all away before we [inserted] were [/inserted] up this morning. Winter seems to be coming along rapidly with black-out time from 7pm to 7am & how we dread it!! Dad will be out again tomorrow night. The weeks seem to pass very quickly I only wish it was the same for you. With all our thoughts & love from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
It is now over a month since we had a letter from you. & we are thankful indeed that the cables which we are privileged to exchange form such a relief.
Your last letter received Aug. 28th. made a very quick journey. The other 2 August letters 2nd & 8th, were the only ones written in that month to get here. What a blessing the two snaps came through all right. It is a great joy to us to have the happy smiles of you & your friends.
Yesterday we enjoyed having Miss Law with us for a few hours. She is really very sweet & her stay with us was all too short. She arrived in a terrific deluge of rain & hail. I went to the bus to meet her & found the motor cycling outfit of happier days most effective protection against the weather.
We have 3 different bus routes from here to Burnley. One of them enables us to get on a bus just outside the gate & by changing buses at Hanle Syke ride practically to Miss Law’s house. & that was the way she returned home owing to the rapidly shortening day light with it’s
[page break
consequent early blackout. Dad is just busy filling in income tax forms. Do you know that income tax is now 10/- in the pound.? It is a very heavy drain. Well love, this morning is very dreary again with driving rain & wind, & our pretty “lake” has real waves beating on the sides. Although the weather has been so bad these few days, we don’t notice it the same from this house with its wide, open view & during these stormy days we get some very marvellous effects from light & shade.
I had a happy letter from Dorothy Preston (Pell) who is now living with her (2nd Lieutenant) husband near London. She says they are coming to her home for a few days very soon & would like to come to see us. I shall look forward to their visit & as Dorothy says we are all looking forward to the happy day when all the young people can meet again. Won’t there be some interesting stories to tell & hear?
How is the baby jackal.? No longer a baby now I suppose.! Is it still with you in camp & do it & the puppy still fraternize.?
My neighbour has just tapped on the window with fresh greens from her garden – a kind gesture which we do appreciate & which we are able to reciprocate with milk. Owing to control schemes, even in this agricultural area there is an acute shortage of milk & as you know I have usually a good supply. Now love I must say Goodbye to you once again & start my culinary duties. What joy when you are home again to share the results of my labours. Mean while all our love & thoughts & prayers
from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas. Tues. 21/10/41.
We are still awaiting a letter from you. It is more than a week since we had the one dated August 28th. & the one before that dated August 8th. contained the precious snaps. which we are so delighted to have. At the moment we are listening in to a “request” programme & at these times you are very near indeed to us. This afternoon I’ve been to the pictures – never thought I should queue to see a picture but today I did – just for a few moments. There has been so much written & said about “Target for tonight”. so I went to the matinee at the Queen’s cinema this afternoon. I had the queer feeling that I had seen it all before but I know of course that the reason for that is in our affinity & in all our talks, & hopes, & fears for the future. That close association is priceless to me. & I am thankful indeed for all the dear memories which now are [underlined] mine:. This has been a very beautiful late Autumn day with marvellous visibility. & welcome sunshine. Tonight, with a very near moon we have frost & cold. It will 7 years on October 24th. since my operation & you will remember the severe wintry weather which prevailed at the time with snow at the end of the
[page break]
month. I suppose you will be having cooler weather too & I hope you will find it more comfortable than the heat mentioned in your last letter. People are beginning to talk about Christmas now. It is rather more than 9 weeks away. & I always think the Spirit of Christmas is very beautiful & inspiring. & you know that at that time our thoughts will be with you so much & we have our hopes, & our memories which mean so very much to all of us.
Wednesday morning & still no letter. What a blessing the cables are.!! It is again a very lovely morning, clear, with welcome sunshine, but very cold. I am obliged to go out there to do my shopping & on a day like this it is a real pleasure. & certainly I feel better for it. Most of the leaves are off the trees now & winter is approaching rapidly. & I’ve gone into warmer clothing already. The lounge in this house faces south & at the moment it is just flooded by sunshine. We think it will be a very warm room to use in winter. I’ve told you before that the house is on in a main road but you can guess it’s not very busy when I tell you that the milk carts etc – from the farms pass along with the men in them reading news papers while the horses just amble along & one of the men I saw appeared to be asleep. Isn’t it funny on a main road.? But nothing seems to be in a hurry here. & people just take their time getting in and out of buses, shops etc: Now love Goodbye again With all our love & 755052 Hudson thoughts & prayers Camp Militaire from Mother & Dad. Annale Algerie North Africa.

Dear Mr. Baker.
It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you that your son, Pilot Officer D.A. Baker, is missing as the result of air operations. He was captain of an aircraft detailed to carry out a raid on enemy shipping. The cause of the failure of the aircraft to return is unknown, neither can we throw any light on the circumstances as yet.
As in all these cases there is every cause for hoping that they will have got away with it. As soon as we receive any information we will immediately communicate with you. Unfortunately there is no set time for receiving information of losses. Sometimes it is a matter of days, sometimes months, before we hear. I would be very grateful if you will advise me should you hear direct from him. In the meantime we can only hope and pray for their safety.
Your son has rendered outstanding service as a Pilot and is very popular. We all miss him deeply and earnestly hope for his safety.
Personal belongings are being forwarded to the Committee of Adjustment who deal with these matters, and should you wish to write to them the address is as follows:-
Central Depository, Committee of Adjustment,
Royal Air Force,
COLNBROOK, Slough, Bucks.
It is with great regret that I have to communicate these sad tidings to you, but I can assure you that your son’s name will remain/
[page break]
will remain in the memory of all who knew him as a gallant and efficient officer who will leave a gap difficult to fill as he was both a good officer and a fine man.
Yours sincerely

Dear Beloved,
Thanks angel for a lovely letter, you’re wonderful.
Well dear how are you?; I’m pleased to say the situation is a little easier now.
We had a lucky break last Friday and twelve of us have a job to do every day now; from 6-a.m to 12-a.m. & then we’re free for the rest of the day and have no parades or guards to do at all. So far everything

has gone fine, but it seems almost too good to be true.

Hello again darling, I hadn’t time to finish your letter last night; hope you don’t mind.
I called at the Y.M.C.A after dinner & received another letter from you & one from Betty. It seems I should have got the last letter first, but I’ll try & answer them both together.
I like the photograph darling, & I’m glad you like it too. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says so long as you say it’s [deleted] now [/deleted] nice.
I’ll try and listen in on the 18th Nov. sweetheart, I won’t try and guess what the song is if

you don’t mind darling; I think I’d rather wait & try and imagine you are singing to me, so if I don’t know beforehand I won’t know what to expect.
You don’t mind me having it that way do you darling?
Dear heart please remember all the fortune-teller told you, I can hardly wait to hear what she said. Did she know about “our secret”? I can’t quite make up my mind as to whom you mean shares our “secret”, but the bias is on the fortune-teller, is that right? What did she tell Dot, anything special, or don’t you know? Tell you what dear;

get mum to read your cup, or better still ask her if she’ll take you to see Mrs. G. Gill and have your cards read; and see if they spot “news of a ring”.
Talking of rings, I didn’t know of Connies’ engagement or that her boy was home on leave. Lucky people, I wish them all the best, & hope they will be as happy as we are. Darling do you think you could get me the News Letters for Oct. & Nov. from Dick, I havn’t [sic] got them & I’d like to have them.
The snaps will be on their way now dear arn’t [sic] they? I’d like an enlargement coloured of us both I think it’s a grand snap don’t you. Are you having a

special one done for your locket, & if so has it come through yet, hope it’s nice for you dearest.
Betty seems please with her snaps and says in her letter “I hope you don’t think I meant it when I asked V to tell you to put “With Love from Ken” on the back. Don’t I know that all your love is reserved for a certain little lady of whom I am very fond;” perhaps you ought to have read it darling because I must again quote a sentence. “Mother thinks they’re grand (the snaps), she sat gazing at the one of you & Vera for ages, “Don’t they make a lovely couple” she said. There darling that’s what B.H. writes, I’m so glad she feels that way about you dear, you’re a wonderful

darling and as Betty says [underlined] all [/underlined] my love [underlined] is [/underlined] reserved for you, my own dear sweetheart, I adore you beloved.
I understand why you didn’t read her letter dear or at least I can think of two reasons, (a) you know you could trust Betty in the things she wrote; and (b) it’s not my angels nature to read other letters not addressed to her. I wonder if I’m right?
Les seems to going on fine now, hope his face heals up well, poor kid. I had an idea who the girl was, & it turned out I was right & as you say dear she’s a nice girl too.
Remember when I was seventeen angel, you sent me a birthday card a month too soon & mum

wouldn’t let me see it till the proper time. We’ve had some really wonderful times together since then havn’t [sic] we darling & if we had our lives over again, I wouldn’t have it any different, would you?
I’m ever so glad the girls like the photo dear, but what makes you sure about the competition, darling nobody knows me like you do and nobody [underlined] ever [/underlined] will. I love you with all my heart darling, and there won’t be a happier man living when we are joined together in eternal possession on the “Great Day”. Sweetheart our love will never be placid ever, and the sweet joy of rapturous love will

never simmer down to contented companionship for us, we’ll marry for love of each other, & our future will follow the wonderful days of our courtship.
Darling heart I’ll always remember the morning I came home. As I stood in the kitchen I saw you as you came with dad & Ron. Your eyes were tired & full of tears bravely held back, then you saw my kit & my partially eaten breakfast & your eyes opened & shone when you said “where is he”. I remember dad coming in & turning on the light but he didn’t see me, then he went out. Mum gave you a sign & then the next I remember was a flying figure being caught in my arms & an angels

voice said “Oh! Ken I do love you.” Beloved it was heavenly holding you in my arms after so long & kissing your dear face & lips. I’m longing for you now darling, & sometimes my heart & my arms ache to hold you tight against my breast, with your head on my shoulders & your lips whispering in my ear. Isn’t love wonderful darling; it changes whole lives & sometimes communities too. It’s Armistice Day today & as I bought a poppy this morning I couldn’t help wishing that the Armistice would cover this war as well. Already 40,000 airmen & airwomen have given their lives for their country
[page break]

and the numbers for the Army & Navy are well above that.
Heaven knows what the full total will be for each country, it must be tremendous even now, & what it will be when it’s finished nobody can tell. I know I’ll get through dear, and when we’ve won, we’ll be able to start our lives anew on the firm foundation of unquenchable love built up day by day, letter by letter, while we are away from each other.
I’m so proud of you my darling. Thanks for sending Mavis a card & a brooch dear, I’d forgotten altogether.
Hope George manages to get home this weekend; I’ll try and get over to see him before I leave London. Glad you enjoyed the picture dearest, I’d have loved to have taken you

& held your hand & stolen a kiss now & then. We’ll have to go to the pictures next time I’m on leave won’t we darling?
Will you send the words of the song you sung dear, you forgot to enclose them you know.
The cutting caused much amusement amongst “the boys”, thanks dearest.
I’ve enclosed your photo dear & I mean what I’ve put. The front is for [deleted] everyday [/deleted] everybody to see; the back just for you & those you wish to see it.
I’ve written to Betty in the other envelope & I’ve left it open for you to read it if you wish. My letters seem to get

longer don’t they, hope you don’t mind darling, or shouldn’t I have said that. I’m sorry.
Your letters are lovely dear & I can tell by them how much you love me, as if I didn’t know. Each one is a link in the chain of love that binds us together & nothing can ever break us apart.
That’s all for now dearest, give my love to all at home & Lucy & family & Dot, & remember me to the girls & those who ask at church.
Chin up darling it won’t be long.
Good Night & God Bless My Angel,
Yours forever,
Ken xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

FIRST LETTER 10TH NOVEMBER 1941.
Dearest Mother, Am uninjured and quite happy so please don’t worry and keep smiling as I probably should not have seen you until the end of this show anyway. I will number my letters to you as a check. Make absolutely certain from the Red Cross as to what you may send to me. Please include a few photographs in your letters. In your first parcel please include towels, lots of soap toothbrushes etcetra. [sic] Re cigarettes please enquire at the Red Cross. Was on leave in Somerset and Torquay before leaving England. Sent you cable from Torquay saying I was keeping well. Also spent a few days in Somerset with the relatives. This letter will be too late for either your birthdays or Christmas, however you know I will be thinking of you then and we can only hope I shall be home again for the next one. Please forgive abrubt [sic] letters but we have to economise. Much love to you all from your loving son Donald.

First letter as prisoner of war. Says he is well and that he would number letters. Suggests she should make sure from Red Cross what she might send him. Asks for photographs with letters. Requests: towels, soap and toothbrushes in first parcel and check with Red Cross for cigarettes. Mentions spending leave in Somerset before leaving. Would be thinking of her for birthdays and Christmas.
