My Dear Mother & Dad,
Since I wrote my last letter to you four days ago, I have been pleased to receive your telegram on the 28th October reading:- Delighted cable fourteenth five weeks without letters August 28th last both well.” but I am very sorry and surprised to learn about the absence of mail from me. I wired back to you on the same day:- “Delighted cable to-day removed Camp Militaire Laghouat Algerie writing always twice weekly well all love” From this I hope you will understand that I have been writing to you all the time twice a week, and that I have moved down South to a Military Camp for the British at Laghouat on the border of the Sahara. I explained in my two earlier letters that Laghouat is an Oasis Arab town about 300 miles from Algiers and that although it is well out in the Blue our living quarters are actually better than at either of our previous Camps. I have gained at last the privacy of a room shared with Jimmy who is of same rank and profession militarily as myself. Tony shares a room adjoining. To-day I was very glad to receive a letter from you dated October 13th and one from Auntie Una dated October 16th. Not bad going. You should not have any difficulty in despatching books to me. Riddick has received already a parcel of eight books which took about six months to arrive. Did you receive any of my letters telling that one of our men received two parcels by Air Mail taking 12 days & 18 days respectively? Contents 50 Players Cigs. 3 Bars Rowntrees chocs. & boiled sweets, packed in an Oxo tin – postage of 4s – 5d. This is
[page break]
expensive I know, but the stuff does appear to get here. Many people have written asking me if there is anything I require sending out. Auntie Una, Mrs. Clayton. E.W.7. Mary etc. If you, or any of these people could send me tea in an Air Mail parcel like this I should very much appreciate it, because apart from the Red Cross supplies, we do not get anything to make hot drinks from, and I do not trust the water here very far. For the past week the weather has been fairly cool. The sun has shone practically all the time but it has not been very powerful. The nights are really cold, moonlight, starlight, clear nights and the sand looks like snow and might be for all the heat there is. For two or three weeks my tummy has not been too good and I have only just got over a loss of voice. I think I caught a chill at Aumale and it takes a lot of getting over here. So John is still at the same place! I thought he had his heart’s desire ages ago, and I am surprised to learn of his disappointment. Yes I knew Dorothy had married a B.B.C. man. Auntie Una says they have laid their car up and that she does not like walking as a recreation. She also asks me what it feels like to be an Uncle to nephew Andrew. Quite frankly this is the first time I have realised my responsibility and am wondering what is expected of me. So some people think it “splendid” that I am out of the terrible war. Well I suppose each one is entitled to his, or her own opinion, on this point. It is rather a sore point with me and requires a very philosophical outlook. I do endorse what [underlined] you [/underlined] say “life and hope does give us something to be thankful for” and for this I do thank God The jolly old space is nearly used again so I am called upon to say good-bye until next letter. As always I send you all my love, thoughts and best wishes. Douglas.

Sunday Oct. 12th/41.
My dear Douglas.
It seems a very long time since we had a letter from you & I’m always wondering how you are getting along. Yesterday Dad & I went to Manchester. Dad had to go to the College of Technology so I did one or two little errands including a visit to Mr Hazel[?] & I called for Mrs Clayton & we met Dad at the old spot & had lunch together. Mrs Clayton seemed to enjoy the change & she was not quite so full of groans & grumbles as usual. She seemed rather troubled that things are not too good with John who is still at the same spot & very disappointed. You will know from a previous letter that Dorothy was married on August 12th but it seems she didn’t marry the soldier after all. Mrs Clayton says the ‘groom [deleted] had [/deleted] [inserted] has [/inserted] a good post at the B.B.C. & they are living in a flat at Watford. I wrote to Dorothy at 9 Heywood St. about two weeks ago & sent her a dainty[?] marmalade jar but have not heard from her & am not surprised now I know she is not living there. Mrs Clayton says John has taken Marion in to tea on two ocassions[sic], so it looks as though all is happy & bright again. Funny isn’t it? Dad saw Mr Tatham[?] yesterday. His business is
[page break]
suffering rather badly & he is anticipating a full-time post in the A.T.S. – a post which seems to me some what strenuous. [paragraph symbol] He called at Sherratt & Hughes to try to arrange for two or three books to be sent to you but they were quite off-hand about it, so we just left it & I am going to see what I can do at Burnley. We’ve been wondering if it really is worth trying to get some books to you if the journey takes so many months, but we did just want you to have a gift from home if possible. Some one has recently mentioned that it is only ten weeks to Christmas, so we begin to wish the time to pass quickly away & we can look forward to Spring-time again. Life is just looking forward all the time isn’t it? Everyone seems to think how splendid that you are now out of the terrible war-fare. I know just how weary you do become of inactivity, but you have life & hope[?] which gives great cause for thankfulness from all of us. [paragraph symbol] Today Dad & I have been working in the garden in lovely Autumn sunshine – we cannot expect many days like it again this year. Early this morning we had white frost, & tonight again is very cold, & winter is definitely not very far away. I often wonder if you have been able to continue your boxing & do hope so. Now that the weather is cooler you will have resumed the physical training, walks, & games & the time will not drag quite so slowly away. Now goodnight love. With all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
It was a great joy to have your cabled message this morning. “Delighted cable today, removed camp [indecipherable word] Laghouat, (LAGHOUAT) Algerie, writing always twice weekly, well, all love Hudson”. It will be six weeks on Saturday since we had a letter from you & I was beginning to feel anxious. When your cable arrived I got out the atlas, as usual, & found that your nearest camp appears to be in mountainous country, further in land. I do hope it will [inserted] be[/inserted] clean & healthy, as the last place appeared to be. In your old G. S. atlas the name is spelt LAGHAUT & according to the cable form, the place of origin is LAGOUAT. So until your longed for letters arrive I’m just wondering.
This week we seem to have come to winter-time & yesterday afternoon had a slight fall of snow. We all remember, don’t we, that seven years ago we had a heavy fall of snow & you & Dad came along snow-covered slippery roads to see me in the nursing home.
Yesterday I had a “perm” & on the way to the hair-dressing establishment I went through the Park – a very lovely natural park - & the effect yesterday was beautiful with brilliant sunshine & all lovely tints on trees & shrubs. But was it cold,
[page break]
Today we have another change & the rain has poured down & that outlook has been somewhat gloomy. Eight weeks today will be Christmas. At the same time as this letter I shall post a calendar to you & do hope it will be allowed to pass the censor. The picture will revive many happy memories.
A letter from Mrs Clayton on Tuesday tells that John is still at the same place, absolutely “fed up” & having a very unhappy time. I feel very sorry for John. It[?] must be a great disappointment that his eager expectations have not materialized. I have not heard anything of Peter Brothers[?] since he got his D.S.O., nor any news of Louis Murray[?] since you went away. We so often think of the happy days of boyhood. They leave very precious memories.
Now love it is time to say Goodnight again so I will leave this space until morning in the hope that I can acknowledge letters from you. Dad has had a wretched cold but I think he seems a little better tonight.
Friday morning & still no letter from you & I just keep on looking forward. It is a fine bright morning with white frost overnight, & marvellous visibility. Most of the trees have lost their leaves now but in this bright morning sunshine the fields look fresh & green.
Dad still seems poorly with his cold. You will remember in the old days [inserted] how [/inserted] stuffy & bad he was & he looks worse now he has gone so thin. I told you that last time he was weighed he & Auntie Gladys weighed each 8 stones 10lbs. I get a bit anxious sometimes, but he says I worry unnecessarily so it’s a good thing it is like that. Good bye now until Sunday. With all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad
