Dear Lew.
How the hell do you think I can obtain petrol coupons. I know I hold an executive position, but as you are aware the mis-use of coupons is against the law and although I am [indecipherable word] I havent found a fire proof way of obtaining them. However, if at all

About this girl Pamela, has there been any intercourse between you and something gone wrong? By the strain of your last letter you seem to have fallen completely for her, and in order to give me some conclusive proof of the looks and figure of this irresistible concubine, why not send a photograph and see if she meets with my approval.

3.
Regards this question of leave, I hope you are saving up a few pounds in order to carry both of us over those 12 days, yes and I mean both of us, as at the present moment I am £2 in debt and practically no hope of being able to pay it back for at least 3 weeks. You see I happen to be the only one of a fine old gang left, and I am called upon to go out on the booze every

time one of the boys come home, and for the past 5 weeks one or the other has been here, they have all gone, Stan Samaworth, Albert Price, Harry Cooke, and Maurice Gaisford etc. and I am getting completely cheesed hanging around Oxford by myself, so hurry up and get some leave and we'll proceed to paint the Town red, probably with all your recent practice, you are getting somewhere near my drinking capacity.

By the way, if you bring Pamela here, you had better look out, I'm a pretty smart guy.

My dear Douglas.
Yesterday I sent a cable to you “thrilled, two photos Monday, lovely autumn morning, wish well. all love. Hudson.” & now I am eagerly awaiting your reply. In one of your recent letters written in July you ask if have had all the replies [deleted] your [/deleted] [inserted] my [/inserted] cables to you. & by this time you will have got one or two letters assuring you of their safe arrival. My last letter, written to you on Thursday night, told of the safe arrival of your photos & how very delighted we are to have them. I do hope you haven’t had to sacrifice too much to pay for them. I just wish I could send you a little extra money occasionally.
Yesterday, when I sent the cable, was a most beautiful autumn day. with warm sunshine following a very heavy dew & the country looked very pleasant & fresh. Memories crowded thick & fast memories of the happy days when we rode so happily together down the Cheshire lanes. In one of your letters you say you hope we’ll have many more happy rides together. I wonder!!!
Following the lovely day yesterday today has been very poor. with rain & very heavy mist. almost like fog.
[page break]
I understand that this is a bad place for fog. & more than ever dread the winter as Dad has a long journey to the works. He has had a fortnight of night duties & it feels nice not to have to worry. I think about them for two weeks. He starts again next Tuesday & as winter approaches the hours are longer & Dad expects to have to stay at the works all day & night when his turn comes round once in eight days. I think I’ve told you before he has no actual duties – it is just a case of being on the spot in case it’s necessary.
Did you get the letter from Ted Hole? I hope you did. He wrote to [deleted] you [/deleted] [inserted] me [/inserted] such a nice letter & I have not yet replied to him. I think I told you he had been stationed in Iver but has now gone away again. It looks as tho’ [sic] John has not been moved yet. Mrs Clayton would have let me know, & think, especially if all hopes had been realized.
Grandad [sic] is going home on Tuesday. He has slept very well. & has seemed quite happy here. tho’ sic] there are a great many things not to his liking.
Now love I must say Goodnight again & hope I shall be able to write longer letters to you after next week meanwhile Dad & I send all our love. On 2nd thoughts I’ll leave my letter until morning. Perhaps there may be a letter from you. Monday morning. No luck re letters from you so I just go on hoping. At least it is (or they are) some thing to look forward to. Goodbye & God bless you always.

Sunday Oct. 5/41
My dear Douglas.
We were delighted to have a letter from you yesterday, 28/8/41, & about 2 hours later your cable arrived & brought much relief. It was dated, 3rd, so it looks as though the delay had been from this end, last Saturday. But now we have had such recent news from you again we are much more content. What a boon these cables are! Especially lately when the mail is not too regular & our only letters in three weeks are the one 8/8/41 containing the precious snaps (what a mercy that came safely) & the one of yesterday. I’m glad you got Ted Hale’s letter. He told me he had written to you & I’ve not written to thank him yet. Tho’ I intend to do so today. The letter must have come air-mail. It made a quick journey. Ted didn’t say if he had sent the letter air mail or ordinary. Your letter of yesterday does not contain stamps of any kind, but in the top right hand corner the letters S.M. in very large type blue & of course the censors stamps. Well love we are pleased to know that the weather is cooling off a little for you now. We are puzzled by your remark “normal or natural taking of the
[page break]
sun now being denied”. Perhaps a previous letter which I have not received has told of restrictions in the exercise which you appeared to enjoy. I often wondered how you were able to play such strenuous games in the intense heat. Yesterday here was a most beautiful day & after lunch Dad & I set out for a long walk which was somewhat curtailed by cows cows everywhere & you know I’m just terrified of them. It is very beautiful country around here & we are thankful indeed for the peace & beauty of it all perhaps all the more noticeable after the experience of a year ago. At the moment I am listening to a radio programme of South American music “down Mexico way” & it brings memories & thoughts of [one indecipherable word] We will very often think of you & us don’t you think? We are amazed & very interested to learn from the Chronicle this morning definite news of your camp at Aumale & how the British residents at Tangier are providing winter clothing for you all while supplies reach you from the Red Cross in London & we are thankful indeed to read such good news. Now love it is Goodbye again & God bless you always all our love Mother & Dad
