My Dearest Mother,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am keeping very well. Thanks very much for your letter written about the 10th of July received about a week ago and glad to hear that you are all well and that the tobacco is not doing too badly. I hope that the average prices were very good.

Jock Anderson is stationed here for a while but he is on the course after me, and he says that his people have done exceptionally well out of last years crop.
If we had not had such awful weather the last week I would have been on leave now prior to going on operations, but as it is, will probably be here for another four days. Shall go down to Somerset again as have been [deleted] there [/deleted] to Scotland since seeing Somerset.
[page break]
[circled 3]
Shall be very pleased to get away from here as it is terribly boring, there being nothing whatever to do when not flying.
Another fellow and myself yesterday borrowed two bikes and rode into Oxford and back – about fifteen miles there and back. Took us about an hour & quarter each way. As had not [deleted] wrid [/deleted] ridden for so long cannot sit down with any comfort today.
Have done a lot of Cross Countries

recently. Frome was on two of the routes so nipped across to Cary and paid my respects by shooting up the place. Then went to the Bristol Channel to practice bombing and ended up at Highbridge. Being a nice day there were a fair number of bathers so caused quite a panic by doing a good “shoot up” along the beach.
Have also been over Wales to the Irish sea. Wales looks pretty from the air and the lakes

Did a trip to Douglas, Isle of Man but did not land. It appears a very delightful spot.
Unfortunately there have been a fair number of casualties among the Rhodesians here so there have been a few funerals which do not tend to brighten up this already miserable spot (my opinion).
You will remember the Kashulas from Somabula. Well one

Well dear mother must close now. Much love to you all from your loving son

P.S. How about some “fags.” The situation here is very acute.

Dear Bill and [underlined] others. [/underlined]
Well the golden haired boy has come unstuck. We took our final boards Friday and Saturday. Terrific disaster, shot down in flames and spread all over the turkey carpet. Talk about the battle of Britain it was a high-power blitzkrieg all directed at one poor innocent. The rear-guard action was fought [deleted] will [/deleted] with determination but with the usual success. Eventually, without any warning, the skids were placed in position and pressure applied. A fierce encounter, but, I am afraid; futile and we now await the results with sorrow in our hearts, ashes on our heads, and the prospect of a further three weeks on our hands. Talk about brassed, browned and belted. After passing all the intermediaries and thinking it was a piece of cake, to have your trousers taken down on your finals just about breaks my faith in

the milk of human kindness and regard it as just so much dirty water. Just goes to show the favourites are not worth backing, they don’t pay dividends.
I am sure all my friends will bear with me in my sorrow - like hell. Well, you will no doubt have the doubtful pleasure of receiving a few more letters from this place before I finally shake the dust of this glorious southern retreat from my feet. Not that I want to leave this camp with all its amenities and luxuries. The glory of laying in bed of a morning and staying out every night suits my style of life. When the gunnery school wants me they will most likely have pay a very heavy transfer fee to get my release, and I shall want bags of cash out of it. I shall want bags of slosh to wash the taste of NAAFI beer off my epiglottis. This will be one of the pleasures through pain every service man is told he will have to endure.
The letters of condolence should still be

addressed here-thats [sic] if any of my friends survive the shock of my reverse, for those that do expire I shall have the very, very, great pleasure of subscribing some small sum to the usual floral decorations. Unless of course it is my dear pal E. Hunt. I want personally to attend his funeral, as soon as possible, and lay a bunch of poison ivy on his chest. The stack of mail I have received lately has really surprised me, I had no idea so many thought so little about so few. You have no idea of the pleasure I get out of not having to read the foul accusations contained in the notes I have received. If it were not for the fact that I know most of my greatest sidekicks are illiterate I should imagine I was deserted. It’s a good job my darling WAAFI failed on her T.P [tele printer] course and still haunts the camp and gives me her sympathy and help-although its [sic] got to the stage of help yourself now.
We still perform our arduous duties as rifle

party and defence squad. We have been slinging grenades into the chalk pits all morning and have, up to the time of going to press, stayed in one piece. If Jerry thinks he stands a chance of frightening the rest of this camp, he’s had it. They are all resigned to being slaughtered by the herbs of “Bonkers Barracks” one of these beautiful Sunday mornings when they find some new method of defence. We have only to have a few hours of anti-tank warfare and our hut will shoulder the defence of Britain. The method employed seems to be to make it as dangerous to get behind you as in front, when the first party move up with their grenades I like to beat it out of range of anything but a long distance train.
I was in London for a few hours last week- end and sailed past Iveagh Avenue in a Buick about 8. Saturday evening. We got our heads over the wire at 5.30 after making all the arrangements for

the usual tales to be told in case somebody asked damned impertinent questions. A good time was had by all and a repeat if looked forward to. If I had been certain I would have dropped a line and let some of you know. Still I shall be along one of these days and shake a few beers out of someone. That is if you poor civilians can still buy beer after you have paid your taxes etc.
Things do not seem to break any more exciting down here- barring the week-end fireworks-and having sunk so low as to be matey with all the N.C.O.s’ life goes by with smoothly- swimmingly and safely. Jankers is a thing of the past as the Squadron office is always under the care of one of our solo school and if he pegs us he gets no cards. It’s nice work, this fighting the enemy on his eastern front. If he can only hold out for a year or two I could just about buy my way out.

thinking round I find there is nothing else that would bear the light of day so I shall just send you the same wishes as you all send me., and I hope they hurt.
Remember me to any and everybody, kiss Moloney and Standivan for me and tell them I stroked one extra for them. I’d ask you to kiss Hunty but don’t want you to die such a horrible death. Remember me to the short-term ex-spotter Dave and his stooge Rusty. If by some freak of fortune my record carries me through I’ll write and let you know.
Best of luck

PS. Remember me to Harry Beacham and hope he is OK.

An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

[underlined] No. 23 [/underlined]

Monday 8th Sept.
[inserted] [underlined] PS [/underlined] Have sent photo to Miss Seaton. [/inserted]
My darling Johnnie,
Two letters arrived from you today, dated Thursday & Friday. I think it’s a sound idea to get in touch with Roy about the christening & I have sent on your letter to him straight away. I suppose, if he accepts, that we have the ceremony here in the house, since you surely can’t borrow a church from under another parson’s nose? In which case I shall have to rig up an altar. The airraid [sic] shelter would make a topical one. However I am asking Roy for hints in that direction in case he will undertake the job. We should doubtless only ask the near relations, so it wouldn’t be a large party, or were you thinking of having sundry friends as well? It is a definite advantage for the baby to stage the affair at home, because its far less tiring & upsetting for her. I do very much hope that your people will be able to come on the day that

is convenient to Roy, if any. Perhaps Irene could honour us too. Peter will have gone back then of course.
I invented the expression “Ferry Command”, but evidently you knew what I meant.
Your second letter No 28 (which by the way was postmarked 6 a.m 6 Sept 41 at Ramsey) was a great comfort to me. You are a darling & I love you tremendously.
I’m sorry the tie as renovated by Mrs Stenzel isn’t a success. I’ll try to buy you a new one here if you can’t get a second one from the store, but of course it costs coupons so I’ll wait & see if you are successful first. I hadn’t the heart to stop her, she was so keen to make it nice for you. Peter brought down some trousers with frayed turn-ups, and she had darned them most elaborately with her own hair which matched the grey exactly. I should have cut the turn-ups off & put them on inside out, but she insisted on this elaborate & pelican-ish method.
Peter is as full of beans as ever. I prepared a list of things that wanted mending &

seeing to, and he is ploughing steadily through it. He thinks he can solder your silver pencil satisfactorily too, up at the works. Tho’ it will mean that you won’t be able to keep spare leads in it because of course he can’t solder it outside as that would spoil the thread. He is longing to put up the shelter but we can’t do that till Mrs Stenzel leaves as there’d be no where to put Dorothy unless I took Frances into my room for a bit. However Mrs S. expects her permit from day to day & will have to leave in a hurry when it does come.
Woe! woe! Mrs Davidson is deserting me! She & her family are going to live out at Dunstable nearer her husband’s work, so I am back where I started from. It really is tragic, she is much the best woman we’ve ever had in the house. I shall try advertising again. If only Mrs Stenzel weren’t leaving soon as well the outlook wouldn’t be quite so black. Just when you are coming on leave too. I should

have liked to have been immediately free from housework then. However, there’s nothing to be done about it.
Dorothy is terribly thrilled because she went up for her first flip yesterday, in a Dragonfly as far as I could make out. She knows nothing about aircraft yet. She now works in the hangars cleaning out the larger planes & likes the work much better.
Yesterday Mrs Hillman & Chris came to tea to inspect Frances. Mrs H. is a very nice motherly woman, we got on very well together & she was enchanted with Frances. [deleted] Afterwards [/deleted] [inserted] In the evening [/inserted] Chris came back & we all played rowdy games of cards, including Dorothy, even descending to Newmarket in the end. It was great fun. Yesterday morning Peter & Ba went blackberrying on the motor bike but there were none ripe & they only got some elderberries which Mrs S is making into jam. It’s lucky for us she’s been here during the jam making season, miserable tho’ it is this year, because she’s very good at it & I shouldn’t have had much time.
Frances has redeemed her poor effort last week & put on 7 oz this time, bringing her up to 17 lbs. I am giving her raw carrot juice now as there are no oranges.
Just one more thing that would be most acceptable if you can get it there – [deleted] Bom [/deleted] Bay Rum – large bottles.
We’re having a lovely second crop of roses just now, hurry up & come & enjoy them too. All my love to my dearest one
Ursula.

Reg ‘Jimmy’ Woolgar was born and schooled in Hove. He began working life as a valuations assistant and was training to be a surveyor, which was interrupted when, in December 1939, he joined the RAF. Although he had aspirations to become a pilot, he trained as a wireless operator/air gunner instead. His wireless operator training was carried out at the wireless training school, RAF Yatesbury. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/849/PWoolgarRLA1609.2.jpg His air gunnery training on Fairy Battle aircraft was conducted at RAF West Freugh. On 15 November 1940 he was promoted to sergeant and posted to No 10 OTU at RAF Upper Heyford. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/845/PWoolgarRLA1601.2.jpg Initially flying Anson aircraft and then Hampdens with C Flight, he had his first ‘Lucky Jim’ moment, on 6 February 1941, when his Hampden aircraft was forced to crash land in a field near Cottesmore, in Lincolnshire. The aircraft was written off, but he and the pilot survived with minor injuries. At the end of operational training, instead of going directly onto operasations, he spent the next 5 months as a screen operator instructor. Eventually, on 1 September 1941, he was posted to 49 Squadron, Hampdens, at RAF Scampton https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/852 where his very first operational trip (described as a baptism of fire) was to Berlin. With headwinds going out and coming back, and nil visibility, it was likely the crew would have to bail out. Fortunately, the skipper found a break in the clouds and the aircraft landed wheels down in a field near Louth. The aircraft had to be recovered back to base, transported by road, on a low loader. On another occasion, on a mine laying operation to Oslo Fjord, his aircraft was peppered with anti-aircraft fire, it returned to base with 36 bullet holes in the fuselage and mainplane. A bullet had also passed through the upright of his gun sight while he was looking through it, whilst another tore through his flying suit. The nickname ‘Lucky Jim’ was beginning to stick.
In February 1942, on an operation to Manheim, the port engine, hit by flak, cut dead. Despite jettisoning all superfluous weight, which unfortunately included all the navigation equipment, the aircraft rapidly lost height, and the pilot ditched the aircraft in the English Channel. Whilst the crew had struggled to keep the aircraft airborne, (on a single engine), it had steered on a massive curve and unbeknown to them was headed down the English Channel, before it ditched. The crew scrambled out onto the wing and managed to inflate the dingy, then had to cut the cord attaching the dingy to the aircraft using a pair of nail scissors, moments before it sunk. In the water for hours, the crew thought they were drifting near the Yorkshire coast, but were rescued by a motor anti-submarine boat, much to their surprise, near the Isle of Wight.
Operational flying was intense, Reg would feel wound up before take-off and there was much apprehension on the way out to the target. Often, they flew through intense flak that was sometimes so close they could smell it. There was always a sense of sense of relief once they came away from the target. In between operations, each day was treated as it came along with many off-duty hours spent socialising in the local hostelries https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/853
After his first operational tour (he completed two) he was commissioned and became gunnery leader with 192 Squadron in 100 Group.
After the war ended, he signed on for an extra two years and was posted to Palestine as an air movements staff officer. Luck was again on his side when, one day, he was on his way to an Air Priorities Board Meeting at the King David Hotel when the hotel was bombed, resulting in many army and civilian casualties.
After a short tour in Kenya, as Senior Movements Staff Officer, he returned to Palestine flying with 38 Squadron until August 1947. In his flying career he amassed over 1000 flying hours. For services to his country Reg was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/858
He was released from the RAF in September 1947. Initially employed as an assistant valuations officer, he studied to become a Chartered Surveyor and secured a job as a senior valuer with the City of London. He later became the planning valuer of the city. After 14 years he was made a partner at the firm St Quintin Son and Stanley. Reg retired in 1971.

William (Bill) Ernest Lucas was born in Tooting Bec, London on the 16th January 1917, 3 years deep into World War One. Luckily for Bill he was not of age to endure with the fighting in the trenches. However, when Europe was engulfed into another worldwide conflict in 1939, this set way for Bill to become involved with the RAF and IBCC.
Growing up, Bill was an only child and left his school (Bec Grammar School) at the age of 15. He managed to get a job with a printers, which led to his second and only other job at an insurance company called the London and Lancashire. The company’s sports club enabled Bill to find his passion for athletics (especially running) and he was expected to participate in the 1940 Olympics until the war interfered. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30884)
A photo of Bill in his running gear is shown in https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30865 where he is running down 55 Graham Road in Surrey.
Bill instead competed in the 1948 Olympic Games as the games were also cancelled in 1944 due to World War Two. Luckily the games were hosted in London (https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/london-1948) and Bill had retired from IBCC meaning that he had time to participate.
As seen in ‘Bill Lucas and the 1948 London Olympics’ (1948) https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30866 Bill managed to come 6th in the Second Heat meaning he was one position off of being in the final on the 2nd August 1948! This collection also includes Bill in his older prime wearing his 1948 Olympic Games jacket and the official Olympic Games programme from 1948.
When Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939, Bill was 22 years old meaning that he was eligible to be part of Great Britain’s Army. Combining Bill’s hatred of the sea and his fathers recent experiences in the trenches, the RAF seemed to be the most compatible choice with Bill. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg)
Bill was not involved in Britain’s mightiest air conflict against Hitler’s Luftwaffe however, instead watching ‘The Few’ defeat the Nazi aircrafts and succeed. Being considered to be Nazi Germany’s first ‘major military defeat’, this allowed for Britain to continue fighting in the war (https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/our-history/anniversaries/battle-of-britain/ and to an extent, allowed Bill to continue his path of becoming an Squadron Leader.
It was November 1940 when Bill started his pilot training, but due to a bomber offensive being the only way to properly counter the Nazis, this was huge not just for Bill but Britain as a whole. There had never been a bomber offensive before in warfare. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg
As seen in Bill’s official Pilot’s Log Book: (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/24264/LLucasWE122826v1.1.pdf) his training consisted of being part of 16 Elementary Flying School at RAF Derby from 1940 to 41 , 8 School of Flying Training at RAF Montrose in 1941 and 20 Operational Training Units at RAF Lossiemouth in 1941 . He flew three different types of aircraft during his training, Miles Magister, Miles Master and Wellington I’s.
Bill’s training finally finished in August 1941 and he was posted to his first official squadron, IX Squadron at Honington. Here he flew the Wellington Bomber.

William (Bill) Lucas was born on January 16th, 1917 in Tooting Bec, London. He was educated at Bec Grammar School, and left at the age of 15 to work at a printing company before moving to the insurers London and Lancashire to work as an assessor. While working there, he developed his talent for athletics with the Belgrave Harriers, with his best discipline being the 5000 metres. His goal was to compete at the 1940 Olympic games. However, in 1940, Bill was called up to help the war effort and mindful of his father’s advice to avoid the army and his own dislike of the sea, he chose to join the RAF.
Initially he trained as a fighter pilot on Miles Magisters and Miles Masters, but by the time he had finished training, the Battle of Britain had been won and the need for bomber pilots was more urgent. So, he was reallocated to bombers and trained to fly the Wellington at RAF Lossiemouth. Bill Lucas · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
Following completion of pilot training in August 1941, he was posted to RAF Honington and joined 9 Squadron flying Wellingtons. He flew 14 operational sorties – notably Cologne and Hamburg – before converting to Stirlings at RAF Waterbeach. He then joined 15 (Bomber) Squadron at RAF Wyton, flying the Short Stirling and, by August 1942, Bill had completed a full tour of 30 operational sorties (over 40 operations in total). Bill experienced tense encounters with German defences, having to take evasive action and also getting caught in a cone of five or six searchlights. To get out of the searchlight glare he had to do things with the aircraft which it was never meant to do. Returning from one mission they flew too close to Kiel and the airframe amassed a lot of bullet holes and an alarming loss of fuel. Crossing the North Sea, the tank indicators showed practically nothing and they had to divert into Woodbridge in Suffolk. The groundcrew estimated there was less than twenty-five gallons of fuel left (probably less than 6 minutes of flying time).
He was released from operational duties and was posted to RAF Lossiemouth as a flying instructor. Then in December 1944, he returned to operational flying and was posted to 162 Squadron, part of the Pathfinder force, to fly the Mosquito, an aircraft he described as “a bit quicker and more responsive; a nice aeroplane”. He completed a further 34 operational sorites with 162 Squadron, including missions over Kiel, Berlin, Hannover and Magdeburg. In recognition of his war services, Bill was awarded the DFC and was Mentioned in Despatches.
Squadron Leader Bill Lucas was released from the Service in January 1946 and returned to the insurance job he had left to join the RAF. Eventually, he left the company to become an insurance broker. He also returned to athletics and the Belgrave Harriers; he ran in various internationals and competed for Great Britain in the 5000m at the 1948 London Olympics. Athletics remained with him for the rest of his life and he gave his spare time freely, working in prominent roles in the administration of athletics. He remained a Belgrave Harrier committee member well into his 90s. He became known as “the golden voice of British Athletics” for his many years as stadium announcer at the White City .
In his later years, Bill remained prominent in RAF and Aircrew Associations. He, along with a small Band of Sussex veterans, was instrumental in helping to raise funds for the construction of the Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park and the International Bomber Command Centre.
