My dear Douglas.
I posted a letter [inserted] to [/inserted] you on [inserted] Sunday & [/inserted] Monday 4 letters from [inserted] you [/inserted] arrived first post. You can well imagine my great joy. The letters, two from Medea & two from Aumale, dated May 25th/29th/June 2nd/6th/. It is really surprising how differently the letters travel. They are all by Air Mail, but as you see some have been a long time on the way. I love to have your letters but I do wonder if it is worth spending your precious allowance on Air Mail stamps when the letters take so long. It would be different if I could send you the stamps or the money to buy them yourself. I have just been writing to Mrs Bowers. I know how deeply grieved you will be to know that Harry went out on his last journey on August 14th/40. It was two weeks after you were reported missing that I was able to send the money from [one indecipherable word] & by return post I had the sad news about Harry from his Mother. For two weeks we shared a common sorrow & she came to visit me at Kensal. - said it did her good to come to see me - & she
[page break]
seemed very delighted when you were reported safe. But she still grieves & hope has now gone too. Alec. Buckley made his last journey too. but I have not heard about Norman Marian. Norman Giblin got the D.F.M. about 3 weeks ago. A week later he was reported missing. So you can imagine, can’t you, love, just how thankful I am to be able to write to you & [inserted] to [/inserted] have your dear letters & though very many things are irksome & trying, at least we have the joy of hope of glad reunion one day. Yesterday Auntie Gladys & Bernard were here for the day & I got the impression that Bernard was intensely bored & they both complained of being cold. Really the day was not an unqualified success. Auntie [deleted] W [/deleted] wants us to spend Dad’s holiday weekend Sept 5th. to 10th. with her but we are not very particular. Shall let you know by cable if we do go. I was very much interested to learn about your puppy & baby jacket but should become a bit nervous as the baby grew bigger. Does it eat the same kind of food as the puppy? The food question for animals is a problem here & it is a punishable offence to give them meat fit for human consumption. The meat ration for adults is 1/- a week per head so you will imagine there’s not much to throw about. Yes, Dad has got “interested” in the pipe now & has his weekly ration of 1oz tobacco & the usual cigarettes & is jolly lucky to be able to get them. They are not so fortunate at Thornhills. Well, love, I wonder if your thoughts go back from this week to 2 years ago. Such joyous memories. Did you remember a year ago yesterday - our last ride in the Rolls, together. Such a mixture this week of happy & sad memories but we’ve got our hopes too! Thank God! All our love Mother & Dad.

Sunday Aug. 10th/41.
My dear Douglas.
Since writing to you on Wed. & telling you we had only received two letters from you since May 11th I’ve had 3 letters dated in order of reception July 6th. May 21st. & May 15th. all sent by Air Mail & each bearing different kinds of post-marks. Needless to say they brought us a great deal of pleasure. We have not yet received early letters from Aumale. 3 have arrived via Tangiers. June 15th. July 10th & 7th. & we are wondering all this long time why you had to leave the comparative amenities of Medea for the Camp [one indecipherable word. Now I will answer your letter of May 15th. in which you hope we are settled in the new home. No doubt you will be surprised to learn that we have not yet got everything ship-shape. Its we have been most comfortably housed for nearly 3 months. I think I told you in a previous letter that the difficult experiences for the past months have taken very heavy toll & I’ve had neither the physical nor mental capacity to rush through the amount of work involved in this latest removal. One very
[page break]
big item has been fixing curtains, not one curtain from Kensal was any use & Rae had to remake old & make new. Which has needed time & more patience that I seem to possess at present. Now this weekend we’ve had an hour taken from our new summer time (which we’ve just loved) & that has meant fixing up black - out curtains again. The month of June was beautiful I didn’t stay indoors but just revelled in our pleasant garden. The weather has been broken now for several days & everything looks fresh & nice this morning after heavy rain last night. It was grand for us to learn that you had enjoyed the walks along the lanes of hawthorn, roses, blackberries etc. The Spring time here was very beautiful & I some times felt very sad at the thought of you missing it. You say how weary you all become, of your isolation & I know oh so well! just how it is with you but you have life & health [deleted] of [/deleted] & very very much to be thankful for & together we hope & pray for the time of joyous reunion. Now just a word in reply to your letter of May 21st. Am glad you got the cables which as you say are a grand link with home. I always feel very thrilled when I get your messages to think that only “yesterday” you sent them & are safe & well. I quite understand how you felt about the sale of the Kensal house. But we thought it the best thing to do under the circumstances. I told you Miss Eckensall’s house was burnt out didn’t I? We thought Mr Sanderson was very brave, but of course it was [inserted] is [/inserted] a very nice house. Now my page is full & I must say Goodbye & God bless you again.
All our love
Mother & Dad.

My Dear Mother & Dad,
To-day being Dad’s birthday I was going to write to you, but this evening I received two letters from you dated August 10th & 13th so this letter will also serve as a reply as well. I expect that by now you will have received at least one of my letters sending best wishes for Dad’s birthday, I do hope so, but in any case you will understand that I should remember the day. I was very glad to learn that you have now received letters from Médéa & here dated May 15th 21st. 25th & 29th, June 2nd 6th 15th. July 6th 10th, & July 16th 24th & 29th as mentioned (the last three) in your cable of Aug. 26th. The earlier letters also I know you have received, but I cannot account for the peculiar order in which they have arrived. I did not know until to-day the fate of Miss Eckersall’s house, & I was very surprised to hear about it. At the same time I was very distressed to learn about Harry Bowers, Alec Buckley & Norman Giblin, as Noel Hawthorn shared the same fate the entire “Gang” with the possible exception of Norman Morrison, have gone. When I think how nearly I was to sharing the same fate we can count our blessings, & I suppose should be thankful. Some times the pill is nearly too big to swallow even so, but one day we shall probably be more than thankful. I wonder if you realise the part that gets us most. It should not be very difficult. You mention that Dad has a holiday week-end from Sept 5th to the 10th, that is beginning to-day. It occurs at a very opportune time with the birthday as day of kick off, & I
[page break]
shall think about you & hope you will have a good time, even if you should go to Calverley. Yes I understand the problem of black out curtains having restled [sic] with them myself, & I realise the amount of extra work it will entail in addition to that already caused by the renewal etc. But be consoled that there are others with this problem to solve now & this time I do not need to help. I wonder if you understand. The sun still shines on us in North Africa, speaking very literally, & this afternoon I lay painfully for half an hour each side to try not to lose that golden colour I acquired earlier on, but it has not made any difference. When I sunbathe I am like the Invisible Man. I wear sun helmet & sun glasses with a towel wrapped round my neck, the rest of my body is unclothed except for a small pair of underpants rolled up as far as possible. As I am growing a beard again the only (so not quite) part of me that will not be brown will be my face. I intended asking you this before – will you both try & find someone to teach you how to play Bridge? It really is a good game & will provide us with bags of entertainment in evenings to come. As you understand Whist it will be simplified so try & learn the bidding of Contract Bridge using Culbertson’s Conventions. The jackal we had disappeared ages ago but we now have two dogs. RAF & Wimpy. The food problem for dogs here is the same as in England, & they also get meat that is not fit for human consumption. Glad Dad can get his tobacco & cigs. This is where we are lucky too. And now space is limited so I must say good-night. With as always every best wish, my thoughts as ever with you. All my love, Douglas.

I enclose the card which Nancy & David Blaikley are putting about of the birth of their baby – rather ingenious, isn't it? Tho' the stork looks very evil to me. I don't know if Ardath cigarettes are smokable, but beggars can't be choosers. If you still can't taste it won't matter or they'll do to offer to others.
Yours always, Ursula.

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Friday 5th Sept.
My dearest Johnny,
I was exceedingly glad to get your letter this morning acknowledging the parcel of cigarettes and to know that there are no longer any clouds between us. What an awful feeling it is to be so far apart and not to know whether the other one is not annoyed or upset. I’m glad its over now. You mean so much to me, life would be empty and useless without you.
I sent off a parcel of socks to you this morning. There is nothing much to report since yesterday. Mrs Stenzel made some more jam last night, and later I went round collecting my
[page break]
savings subscriptions. Sometimes it is quite fun stopping to chat with the different families, they are all very friendly, and if it weren’t that I am often tired in the evening & find it a nuisance to go out, I should thoroughly enjoy it. Next week all those of us who have been giving 2/6 per week will have bought a certificate and I shall have a lot to do issuing them and new books & holder cards to most people. There is quite a lot of filling up & signing to be done, but by the time I’ve done it for 15 of us I should know the routine. Mrs Stenzel is a tremendous help to me. For instance she generally washes
[page break]
the baby’s nappies while I am bathing & feeding her so that I am free to go down to town by 11 am instead of having all those odd jobs hanging about. Today she has turned out the bookcase in the dining room and dusted & vacuumed all the books, which is a long & tedious job which won’t have to be done again for months, thank goodness.
I must stop now & go down to the allotment to get some seeds for the gardener to put in this afternoon. He is clearing up & pruning the raspberries & putting the strawberry bed in order.
[page break]
The gunnery course sounds extremely complicated and extensive, but rather fun I would think. Surely observers are not expected to do much shooting are they?
All my love to you dearest one. I hope you are having the same lovely weather as we are just now.
Yours always

Gave Frances some carrot juice today, she didn’t object to it as much as the tomato juice, but anyway she swallows both.

Dear Mum & Dad & Peter,
We are still waiting to start flying, and the latest rumour is that we will start on the 25th., so our ground lectures should not be long now. We have been given text books on Flying, and Navigation, which makes things more encouraging.
They have taken us off fatigues, in place of which we do a little drill, and plenty of P.T. and basket ball games. The corporals in charge of us at drill and P.T. are very decent chaps, and help us a lot in helping us to endure this waiting about.
The weather is starting to break up now. It has been very hot, but now it is gradually getting cooler, and is [deleted] very [/deleted] freezing at night. By next month, the snow should be starting, just when we start flying. But they have rollers and other implements to make landing & taking off possible on the snow, so we should not [deleted] loos [/deleted] lose many hours.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
My first letter from England was one from Betty, forwarded from Wilmslow to Ottawa and then on to here. Her letter took 24 days to get here, and by the post marks on one or two other chaps letters, Air Mail is about 8 days quicker. When a pal shouted and waved a letter for me, I was so eager to get it that I tripped up & fell headlong on to the rough [deleted] su [/deleted] road surface and mucked my hands up a bit. They are getting better now, but to get any mail is the big event of the day. So please write soon, as letters here are so infrequent.
When we are in Canada we are supposed to have 2 weeks leave, [underlined] if we are lucky [/underlined], so I would like to see those Hamilton people. But unlike in England we do not get free travel warrants, so it would be rather costly, especially as we have not yet been paid [deleted] si [/deleted] the full amount due to us. I believe John knows some people in British Columbia, and so am asking him for their address. In any case, you cannot go far without money, and so could you find out whether it is possible to change English money into Canadian Currency in England.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
It is hard to get English money changed here. I suppose G.H. & Co.still send the monthly cheque.
I’ve just got some “gen”. We [underlined] definitely [/underlined] start flying on the 25th, so with passes allowing us out till midnight, free films shows, plenty of good food, and plenty of P.T. we are more happy. At P.T. we are starting to learn holds in wrestling, and when practising in the hut before we go to bed, my pyjamas, and not a few others, are not standing up to it well, and show many signs of amateur stitching.
In the afternoons, we laze about on our beds spirits are rather high. The most [deleted] con [/deleted] usual practice is to dismantle the beds, so that when the owners come in after lights out, there is usually a glorious hullabaloo. The beds are also “adjusted” so that when the owner comes along and sits or lies down, the bed collapses. My pals did that to mine once, and once was taken to bits. After using [deleted] using [/deleted] all manner of means including the fire axe, some brackets got so bent, that we changed the bed for the spare one. The beds are metal frame
[page break]

ones, and are double deckers. One afternoon I happened to go to sleep; my pals took advantage of this and put boots, brooms and blankets piled around me, & then took a [deleted] sno [/deleted] snap. I did not discover what they had done till I woke up. as far as photos go for clearness, it has come out quite well, and am having two prints done, and also two of the hut itself, showing the inside. When they are developed I will send them on. I wish I had brought my camera now, but I should not like to risk having [inserted] it [/inserted] sent over by post.
They have started giving us inoculations again. They gave us 3 test jabs to see what would happen in 24 hours. The area round one of the pricks went red, and after the 24 hours, they gave us the inoculation. The M.O. put an awful lot in, and it felt rather uncomfortable. But it is OK now. [deleted] One [/deleted] However, the arms of 3 or 4 chaps have swollen up tremendously & gone all red from the shoulder down to the wrist. They have had to have hospital treatment. We have to have this business once a week for 5 weeks, but this week we have missed it
[page break]

because they have run out of whatever they pump into us.
This afternoon we are starting off on to some brain work – i.e. morse, so now, it looks as though things are quickening up, which is all to the good.
I hope Peter is getting on O.K. at work & is liking it, & Kenneth has not been giving the speed cops too much trouble on his bike. Talking of speed – yesterday I was walking along the road from Swift Current, & along came “Joe’s Taxi”, famed for his speeding. He stopped, & I got in his [deleted] O [/deleted] huge Oldsmobile, & off we went. It was not long before we were kicking up 85 m.p.h., and on a road made of dirt & stones too.
Well, I must be finishing now as time is getting short.
With Love to you all,
[underlined] Hedley [/underlined].
P.S. Would you please put on the top of your letters a consecative [sic] number, & then I shall know if a letter has been lost on the way.
