Have not heard from you for quite a while now but expect there’ll be something soon. Have received two parcels from you

Had a letter from Babs Tulloch the other day and she says they are all keeping well and that she is very busy.

Mr Dear [underlined] Dennis [/underlined]
Thank you for another interesting letter. No we hadn’t heard what damage had been done to Hull until we got your letter although when we heard from Marion she mentioned that there were not many big shops left. Since then we have met a soldier called Jim Hilson who lives in Parkfield Drive & his wife sent him quite a list of the damage done he told us that Robinsons woodwork shop is down so I wonder what they are doing now. I wonder if there was anyone in the shops when they went, maybe some roof watchers. What about Co-op Bank is that still alright, I wonder what they will do if it gets bombed maybe they have got records elsewhere. Do you know if Arthur Cauby has had to join up, his job at Sissons would finish didn’t it. Yes Dennis I am sure you would be pleased to see “Raeville”, I would just love to sleep in my own bed, I do wish we were all safely back again. How was the car looking, do you think it will be ruined. Yes I too am sorry Fields Octagon Cafe is gone, the first time I [deleted] was [/deleted] saw Daddy was in there, still most of the places
[page break]
you mention wouldn’t have many people in at the time. I haven’t heard from M[underlined]rs[/underlined] Johnson yet maybe her letter got lost. I had a letter from Jack he had been spending a week-end with Auntie Eva. Things are not at all comfy here having air raids or alarms every night so I am going for a holiday to get a rest I shall not go far away so I will be able to see Daddy sometimes. I don’t want to leave Daddy but he gets a bit worried about me. How much are you weighing now Dennis, I got weighed again & I am 8st 1lb 5oz, Daddy keeps telling me that my sons wont [sic] know me when I come home but I can see where I have got fat maybe my bones are a bit better covered that is all. We are looking forward to getting those Airgraph letters now we have heard that you are able to send them. Jack said in his letter that one week he had not enough money to buy a stamp to send us a letter, well now they will cost you a bit more with the Airgraphs so how about sending Max & Jack 4 or 6 stamps a month out of Raeville money & take the same yourself I keep wondering if you arranged about paying Daddy’s Trinity House Fund. Is Marjory D. still doing the same job. I told you didn’t I that Daddy has got a Spaniel dog, Daddy brushes here [sic] every day & she looks very nice, if she has some pups before we come home I would realy [sic] feel like bring [sic] one home, but no other dog takes Micks place with me. Keep writing Dennis & lets [sic] us have the news if I go away Daddy will forward the letters on to me. Has Uncle Fred got quite better again, does he like being at Raeville’ better than Eleanors. It is lunch time now. Remember me to all our friends. Hope you are keeping well
Much Love

My dear Douglas.
Thank you very much for a letter dated June 15th received on Saturday. It was a very happy surprise to get news from you so quickly, as the last letter before that one is dated May 7th. We were delighted to have such [deleted] a [/deleted] good news of you from [indecipherable word], but it seems as the circumstances for you have changed again. [deleted] for you. [/deleted] I surmise[?] that we shall receive letters any time now, telling us some thing of what has happened, & we are anxious to know that things are not too bad. We thought the news from [indecipherable word] was too good to be true, but at any rate I imagine that you may have had about a month under much happier conditions & in these days of uncertainty we are thankful indeed for the smallest mercies. We’ve had 4 weeks of marvellous summer weather, like we enjoyed so much two years ago in Somerset, but on Saturday we had a thunderstorm which brought welcome & much needed rain & now the weather remains unsettled. It is still very warm & I am sitting in the garden to write my letter to you. I am hoping all the time to hear the telegraph
[page break]
messenger with a reply to my prepaid reply cable sent to you on Saturday, July 12th. I have previously sent one to you on June 30th with prepaid reply value 5/- & if I do not get a reply to the last one I shall surmise that you are not now allowed to send cables. But we must just keep on writing letters. Your last one to us came in just 4 weeks & as your cable [inserted] of June 20th [/inserted] told that you had got my letter dated May 29th that meant my news reached you in about 3 weeks. We are so very thankful that we are able to thus keep in touch with each other. The relations who don’t send letters to you are all too much engrossed in their own, often very petty, business. The war which has brought so much strain & sorrow to many, does not touch any of them [indecipherable word] nearby & they just go their own selfish ways.
I had a letter from Joan Lander on June 30th telling that she was to be married at [indecipherable word] Church on July 5th. On the day after I had written to you the quotation from Shakespeare Mrs Lander wrote that Joan & her husband had gone to Stratford for the weekend = the only leave granted at the time. The new husband comes from Preston – “the only son of his mother & she was a widow”. I try to picture your lovely country. It must have looked very beautiful in the Spring-time as you travelled from Kef[?] to Medea. I wonder if our English country-side will look homely & simple to you after so much grandeur.? Well love I must say Goodbye to you now & go shopping. We are rather a long way from the shops & there is not much delivery done now. Of course you know that many things are rationed but we don’t grumble. After Manchester it is a haven of rest here. Praise be! I have had home grown strawberries & have pretty sweet peas both in the house & in the garden. They bring very tender memories. All our love Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
Thank you very much for a letter dated June 15th received on Saturday. It was a very happy surprise to get news from you so quickly, as the last letter before that one is dated May 7th . We were delighted to have such [deleted] a [/deleted] good news of you from Medea, but it seems as tho circumstances for you have changed again. [deleted] for you [/deleted] . I surmise that we shall receive letters anytime now, telling us something of what has happened, & we are anxious to know that things are not too bad. We thought the news Medea was too good to be true. but at any rate we imagine that you may have had about a month under much happier conditions & these days of uncertainty we are thankful indeed for the smallest mercies. We’ve had 4 weeks of marvellous summer weather like we enjoyed so much two years ago in Somerset. but on Saturday we had a thunderstorm which brought welcome & much needed rain & now the weather remains unsettled. It is still very warm & I am sitting in the garden to write my letter to you. I am hoping all the time to hear the telegraph
[page break]
messages with a reply to my prepaid reply cable sent to you on Saturday July 12th . I have previously sent one to you on July 30th . with prepaid reply value 5/-. & if I do not get a reply to the last one I shall surmise that you are not now allowed to send cables. But we must just keep on writing letters. Your last one to us came in just four weeks & as your cable [inserted] of June 20th [/inserted] told that you had got my letter dated May 29th that meant my news reached you in about three weeks. We are so very thankful that we are able to thus keep in touch with each other. The relations who don’t send letters to you are all too much engrossed in their own often very petty business. The war which has brought so much shame & sorrow to many does not touch any of them very nearly & they just go their own selfish ways. I had a letter from Joan Lander on June 30th telling that she was to be married at Mosley Church on July 5th. On the day after I had written to you the quotation from Shakespeare Mrs Lander wrote that Joan and her husband had gone to Stratford for the weekend. = the only leave granted at the time. Tues. July 29th 1941.
My dear Douglas.
I am still eagerly awaiting my first letter from Aumale & am wondering all the time if you are all right. We have had some lovely weather, which we have so much enjoyed. but yesterday afternoon there was a change, a short shower of much-needed rain, but only enough to darken the soil in the garden, & this morning is decidedly cool & I think I must light a fire. Except for airing clothes we’ve been without fires for weeks, quite a record in our married life. It seems strange, rather, as when we came here we were told by different people how cold it would be in the winter. At any rate we’ve had a very good start & I say to Dad if the winter [underlined] is [/underlined] very severe we can always look forward to the Spring-time knowing how much beauty & joy it will bring to us & hoping & praying most earnestly for a world wide peace, which will restore our dear ones to us again.
I have just been listening to a recording
[page break]
of Saturday’s commentary & how I did wish you were able to hear it. The old H.M.V. still functions, but the removal here did not improve it at all, & very often (tho’ not always) we listen in to the accompaniment of loud crackles, booms, etc. You remember the “antics” when the set was needing expert attention. Well of course old age is creeping on & it certainly does not improve with age. Your lovely photo still has its place of honour but this dining room is smaller & a different shape to Kensal & the set stands in a corner by the fire-place. The fire-place is so different. Instead of the pretty tiled one this is a more ancient structure of beautiful wood & mirrors & looks very comfortable & cheerful when a bright fire is burning in it. On August 10th we revert to Willett summer time & lose 1 hour’s daylight. We have just loved the long days & bedtime has shown marvellous sunsets which have previously meant time to prepare supper. I suppose the farmers find the extra summer time inconvenient, hence the reversion to one extra hour of daylight on Greenwich time. Well love my page is full again so I must say Goodbye & send this letter by Tangier in the hope of a more speedy journey. A tame thrush has been chirping just outside, all the morning. I wondered if it were seeking a young one. Last night a frog was hopping about the garden evidently pleased with the rain. All our love
Mother & Dad.

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.

Lido,
August 18th
Darling Johnnie,
I was duly enraged, as I suppose you wanted me to be, to receive your two VR badges. My only consolation is that when you get your commission you’ll [underlined] have [/underlined] to wear the brass VR’s – [underlined] & [/underlined] polish them!
Today at long last I had a letter from Mrs Stenzel. She is hoping to arrive on Friday of this week, & will send me a wire if all goes well.
As regards her history it is as follows:- Wife of Dr Julius Stenzel, rather famous professor of Kiel, Halle & sundry other universities in classics, & author of various erudite books chiefly on Plato which Mrs S. helped to write. She is a Dr in her own right too (also classics) & is the sister of Dr Mugden, now deceased (1919) the father of the Mugden family with whom I had an exchange after I left school. The second son Klaus [inserted] Mugden [/inserted] came here for 3 months & then I went there in the summer of 1934 before proceeding to India. Otto Stenzel, Mrs S eldest son, used to visit the Mugden's, & the two daughters Anna & Marie were in London at that time & I got to know them too. They are now in U.S.A. and so is Jochem, the younger son, whom I first got to know in Italy.

It was actually thro’ Otto that I went to Italy. I was wanting to learn another language & was thinking of a Scandinavian one for a change but had no connection or means of getting there, when Otto suggested Italian & said his brother was there & would doubtless help me to get a job. So I went & he did. That Christmas (1937) I went from Italy to Berlin to stay with the Stenzels (the father by the way died some years ago) for a fortnight, a nasty drear city it is too, good job if the RAF does knock it down, tho’ the lakes & woods round about are lovely. Mrs Stenzel also came to stay with us here once when Mother was here & when she (Mrs S.) was on her way over to America to visit her children, or at least Anna, I believe Maria was still in England then. Now she is once again on her way to America, but it is taking a jolly long time to get here. She came over, leaving Germany for the last & final time, shortly before the war, 1939 I believe – you remember I had some bother with my MP to get her application attended to. Her name is on the list for a visa to USA but I’m not sure how soon she’s likely to get it, or whether she can get a passage if she does. When she can, she’ll go of course. Her other guarantor over here is Dr Harold Balme, of Harley Street, who knows her because his son David Balme went over to stay with the Stenzels while

Dr Julius Stenzel was still alive for coaching in Classics, & Maria also stayed with them when she was over here. David Balme is a classics don at Cambridge & now in RAF as pilot.
When you write to your people you might as well harp on her children in USA, specially Jochem who has volunteered for USA army. Otto is presumably still in Germany, but of course she has no news of him. It was on his account that she was interred, because I suppose the authorities thought that with one son in neutral America & the other in the enemy’s camp she might be a potential danger. However she is heart & soul with us, in spite of her treatment over here. Her stay with me may quite well be short, all too short for my liking, if there is any chance for her to get over to U.S.A. & now that she is free naturally her children over there will do everything they can to get her over. She is about 60 I should think, very intelligent with a serene philosophy which has brought her without any bitterness thro’ a very unpleasant & sad time. I’m sure you’ll like her.
I’m sending you the cake today in spite of your protests, because I made 2, & am keeping one for us. I’m sure you’ll manage to consume it somehow.
By the way, since Mrs S. has been over here her

story is as follows. Tho’ you needn’t recount it all to your people. She went to live with David Balme & his wife who had a small baby, & stayed till David joined up when they couldn’t afford her, so she went to Mrs Balme senior, & while there had to fill up some form about her antecedents & on the advice of Mrs B & against her own judgement she didn’t mention Otto. Later in conversation with some friend of Mrs B. she mentioned Otto, & this woman asked if the police knew she had a son in Germany & when she said “no” & explained why, this woman informed the police & she was clapped into Holloway forthwith. After a time she went to Isle of Man & was eventually released without explanation. She then applied for & got a job in some family but when she went to the police for the necessary permit to work, they looked up her records, found she had been interned, & promptly arrested her again, once more with no explanation. She was again in Holloway for a time, then Isle of Man, & has now at last been before a tribunal again & definitely reclassified as Friendly Alien, so that she should be alright this time. Never once has she been charged with any crime or infringement of rules & regulations, in fact she has never been able to get out of the authorities exactly what she is detained for. It is the usual muddle & prejudice. However we hope its over now. At Port Enis she has been giving classes in classics & philosophy & generally making herself useful.

My photos are ready at last but are a dismal set of failures. Luckily the one of you holding Frances is good of both of you, & I’m going to get it trimmed & enlarged. I enclose the only ones that are worth looking at. Please return them sometime.
I seem to have written quite a screed for a change. Frances is lying out in her pram cooing adorably as a gentle reminder that its almost time for her lunch. I must take her down to be weighed again today. You’ll get quite a shock when you see her if she goes on growing at this rate.
When you’ve written to your people about Mrs S. let me know what you’ve said, will you? I haven’t heard from them for weeks, but the phone is hopelessly out of order so maybe they have rung up in vain.
All my love to you darling one. I’ll send off the Left Done Club book sometime soon.
Yours always

Apparently Grindleys told Mother she’s over £100 overdrawn so something seems to have gone wrong. However she’s fixed it now, according to her last cable.
