Friday.
Dear Vic
this bloody place is still the same; the wind blows as strongly as ever and there is the same interminable mud and mess.
There are still bloody great crowds at meal-times; the same bloody awkward ground staff wallabs; the same binding, bloody, bullshit. Generally speaking, it is pretty bloody.
There aren't many blokes left who I knew when last here, but there are one or two, and fortunately they are quite good eggs.
[page break]
2/
That binding little bastard Flynn, who used to be 77 Squadron Discip. merchant, now holds the odious position of S.W.O. Whether he has changed or not since attaining this significance I cannot tell, for I have not as yet come into direct contact with him.
From a central position in the ante-room, a bloody horrible photograph of the late S.W.O. (Joe Cuthbertson) leers down on all and sundry with as much to say, as "if you bastards had been here in my time I'd have bloody well shaken you."
You will probably have gathered by this time that I am not very keen about the place.
[page break]
3/
Ian Hay was nabbed for A.C.P. last night and it kind of shook him for he had anticipated having aeroplanes and crews showered bountifully upon him the moment he showed his cherubic face.
I haven't done a bloody thing to date, excepting to sit on my "ring" and moan loudly to any unfortunate person within hearing.
Riley and I have been stuffed in the gym at Skellfield Hall for the time being, and our room-mates are the most horrible bunch of "sprogs" from O.T.U. Needless to say, we have shot quite a few hefty lines.
[page break]
4/
I haven't as yet come across any of Johnny's old pals excepting of course F/Sgt. Burley who still rules the roost.
Bill Swayne (or Swain) has gone to an O.T.U. near Stratford, so Johnny can probably discover the exact address and write to him there.
As far as I can gather, the old car has been taken from behind the "Angel" to some unknown place, by a person who rejoices in the name of F/Lt. Jordan.
Well that's all the 'gen' for just now, so cheerio and good luck to both of you.
I'll be seeing you,
Maurice.
P.S. please excuse various shades of ink. M

Dear Mrs. Newton,
I am writing concerning our telephone conversation on August 13th when you made an enquiry for your husband, Sergeant J.L. Newton, No. 742570, and for his friend, Sergeant R.C. Smith, No. 742572.
I am so sorry that we have at present no news of your husband, but, as I told you, we are making all possible enquiries and you will be notified without delay if we succeed in obtaining any information.
Sergeant R.C. Smith has, unhappily, now been posted by the Air Ministry as “missing, believed killed in action. The grievous news that he lost his life was sent by the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
Sergeant Louch, a member of the crew, has been reported as a prisoner of war, and we have written to him asking if he can give us any information about what happened at the time. We have also sent a special enquiry to the International Red Cross Committee, asking them to obtain what details they can about the place where Sergeant Smith is buried.
It is likely to be several months before we receive replies to these enquiries, but we will write to you again when we do so.
I am so sorry to have to send you this distressing news.
Yours sincerely, [signature] Margaret Ampthill. Chairman. pp [indecipherable letter] . m.

Friday 15/8/41
Darling Johnnie,
I warn you I’m feeling thoroughly depressed this evening, longing for you & your cheerfulness, or if I can’t have you, at least somebody to be company. It has been grey & raining all day which made matters worse, & you can tell I was feeling utterly desperate because I even asked Mrs Neal if her brats would care to come in & play cards, but they were away, so even that was squashed. I have to admit I did cry a wee bit, but it wasn’t much, & then they played Beethoven’s 5th symphony on the wireless which made things a little less bleak so I’ve been sitting doing my mending & listening to all the rest of the drivel they broadcast. I’m finding “Wuthering Heights” increasingly improbable & not particularly cheering reading. Thank goodness Ba will be home tomorrow, tho’ even then she’s on night duty so I’ll be on my own every other night. I do wish Mrs Stenzel would hurry up & come, its so depressing to be alone all the
[page break]
time. To make matters worse the telephone is out of order so that I can’t ring up my friends, & furthermore it keeps tinkeling & ringing in a most tantalizing way & when I pick up the receiver, there’s nothing. It was quite alright too until the post office engineers came round poking for some mythical fault, & now its out of order with a vengeance. Incidentally its curious how everyone seems to come to the door between 9-30 & 10-30 am, just while I’m busy nursing & bathing Frances!
[underlined] Saturday [/underlined]
Feeling better now after an uneventful & sound night’s sleep.
Your letter this morning contained solemn warnings about invasion & advice on how to sink a submarine which I think is very good. Personally I don’t see that the Nazis can attempt invasion now that we are so much stronger until the Russians are well & truly beaten, which they are not yet, & even then I should have thought the
[page break]
Germans needed a little time to get their breath back. However I suppose we mustn’t put anything past them. Today a note has come from the Town Hall to say that an indoor shelter is now available & will I kindly send £7 within a week or else … I suppose I’d better stump up. If I can’t manage to put it together myself, Peter will be down at the beginning of September & can do it for me. I sigh to think of spoiling the sittingroom,’s beauty, but it will be nice to have somewhere to put Frances with complete confidence.
On the strength of your warning & also because I’ve been meaning to do it for ages, I popped her in her gasmask this morning before the bath. She was quite unperturbed & I kept her there for 5 minutes while I pumped. She seemed to enjoy it, so that’s a blessing. Next time I’ll put on my mask at the
[page break]
same time so that she gets used to seeing me in it, beastly tho’ it is.
I’m glad you haven’t read Gone with the Wind, because I think you should enjoy it, I certainly did. I send it off to you forthwith. I rather agree with your comments on “Child of Misfortune” though parts of it I did find really penetrating. I’m glad you think it is the authors who write hot air & not us who are deficient mentally, I’ve often wondered.
As you say you are very much out of touch with the news, I am sending yesterday’s Telegraph which contains the dope about Churchill’s & Roosevelt’s meeting. Also NSSN.
Good luck in your exams, written & oral. I can’t imagine you gave the Squadron Commander your “usual poor show of yourself.” You know they all like you best. Anyway I do.
I love you always, my dearest. Look after yourself

Friday.
Aug. 15th
My darling Johnnie,
Today came your letter describing your lone walk amid the moors & glens on your free half day. Goodness how I long to be with you & share your free time, altho’ of course if you survey the matter in the cold light of reason I couldn’t in any case go wandering over hills & moors with Frances in the pram, so perhaps its just as well that you are free to go on your own. Do you really think about me so much? And so pleasantly? It’s very thrilling to me to think that you do so. Of course you are nearly always in my thoughts too, sometimes as a subconscious glow of happiness & security, sometimes in particular memories, full of love & laughter & sometimes with a fierce passionate longing
[page break]
to be with you again and for always. Yet it seems somehow strange & wonderful that you should think of me so much too. One knows oneself so well that it hardly seems possible that another & so much admired human being could find that self interesting & much loving. However it is so, and thank God for it.
I have forwarded “Gone with the Wind” a couple of days ago & am, now reading “Wuthering Heights” which, I must admit, has not yet succeeded in making itself at all real & actual to me, as “G w t W” did from the very beginning. The characters are all so preposterously wild & unruly, they all need a thorough good spanking. However perhaps it will improve, or I get into it better.
Yesterday evening I spent a back breaking hour removing dandelions from
[page break]

the [deleted] back [/deleted] front lawn, which now looks quite bare & lost without them. They [underlined] were [/underlined] beauties, with roots 6 or 7 inches long. I saw old man Lilley in the town yesterday & asked when he was coming to do some more gardening. He said he was so busy, tho’ he was standing gossiping outside a pub at the time. He said he’d come this p.m, but its pouring with rain today so maybe he won’t. I want to have both lawns cut, as well as heaps of other things.
Did you hear Attlee’s speech yesterday at 3 pm? Probably not, I suppose. It was certainly pretty dramatic on Churchill’s part to go sailing about on the Atlantic like that chatting to Roosevelt – characteristic of him. I’m very glad they’ve
[page break]
issued some sort of peace aims, even if they’re not as specific as one would have wished. At least they are the rock bottom fundamentals on which everyone can agree.
I’ve washed & mended your socks & will post them off today or tomorrow. Are you short of them? Because I can easily send some more from your copious store. I must potter off to town now, altho’ it is pouring, while I can leave Frances with Mrs Davidson.
All my love to you, dearest husband
Yours always
Ursula
Glad you’re GB again – keep it up!
