Dear Bill and fellow workers.
Pausing for a moment in this joyous round of pleasure I take up the pen and send you my heartiest regards. That is if you are still able to read. I was only wondering if you had forgotten how to do both things. They are still delivering letters, postcards etc. on this camp. But not to me. Seems like your life of ease and plenty makes for forgetfulness of the sufferings of the youth of the country.
We have run up against the rarest of all phenomena, a human sergeant. We have succeeded in winning plenty of cash off him at solo and Allah be praised, he is a glutton for punishment and comes back for more. Our P.T under him is one round of do it if you like. I shall be glad
[page break]
when my light duty is finished so that I can cut myself a slice of the lovely grub he dishes up. Just my luck to get hurt when a break like this pancakes on the parade ground. The rest of our stay here should compensate for the blood spilt upon the various parade grounds we have ploughed up with our elfin feet.
The end of this period is definitely in sight, five more weeks and we should be packing our kits for another move. This should either be gunnery – I – oM [Isle of Man] or Scotland or W.O on a ground post for winter. I hope it is the former. They buried four boys out of the squad three weeks ahead of us on Friday. Roll on death. No wonder they tell you the slow march if the most essential part of foot-drill. We were on the parade, rifle duty party for the week and from the way the ambulance beat it for the hills this morning some-one else is on a 07.00 hrs parade on Friday again, he won’t be carrying a rifle.
They wheeled a bunch of Aussies into camp,
[inserted] 2. [/inserted]
[page break]
150 of them, over the weekend. At present they are nice and quiet, nice boys in fact, but I think the way things are moving the excitement will break out round about Friday when they, the big shots, give a get together dance in our NAAFI From what some of the Canadians and some of the Jocks are saying it should be a dance worth going to with a pair of knuckle-dusters This little chicken will not be there, I shall just content myself with cheering from the sidelines {sic]. If all goes as anticipated I should imagine they will rebuild the NAAFI and have a return when the next lot move in.
We are really bedded down in this camp now. When we do leave I can see some tears being shed. Tears of joy. They bullshit you from dawn to dark and when you are nicely settled in bed, sound a blasted alarm and turn out all rifle huts, just for practice. They worked that one Friday night, a b------ fine start for the week-end. But this week-end I shall get my nut [head] over the fence and leg it for home, pass
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
[page break]
or no pass. My rib is pretty fair and the strapping comes off Wednesday and with a little judicious lying, hard as it may be, I shall collect a 2q5 and 36 hrs for myself. If I have to walk back this time I’m afraid I shall give up liking this job. I don’t mind the N.C. Os [sic] f----- me about but when civvies in cars start it, its [sic] about time they fought this war themselves.
Things still go on the same quiet way and only the wet weather has interfered with our evening entertainment. We have given up drinking NAAFI beer, Mr Hunt please note, as it was not doing us any good. Put too much water in your system. Y.M.C.A tea is our beverage now, its [sic] got a kick like an anti-tank rifle and scours your guts like a steel wool pull-through. Two cups of it and WAAFI would rather do anything than drink another, so we go and do it. It’s a great life if I’ve only got strength enough, to live long enough.
WAAFI is here for a long teleprinter [sic] course, she might not go so very far in the class but she goes further than most outside.
[inserted] 4 [/inserted]
[page break]
If J.M or C.S. hurry up and get in this racket there might be a few bits left but the way the boys are belting around it won’t be very big bits. They have rationed us to 20 fags per week for airman, 15 for WAAFs so I am preaching hard about the evil of girls smoking but as I mentioned in a previous letter she’s half dumb and her conversation always starts with “gimme”.
They say this place was a concentration camp in the last war, I don’t know why they stick the word “last” in. They regard all of us air-crew as half-wits. They make us show a pass to get in the blasted place and let you walk out without bothering. If you come in late they demand your pass, look at it and knock you off. If you haven’t one they tell you to get in the best way you can and leave you alone. I think they are right.

Letter from Peter Lamprey to W Gunton
Description
An account of the resource
Peter Lamprey notes that he has only five weeks to go and then he should be off on his gunnery course or a wireless operator on the ground. He mentions some casualties and that a large number of Australian had arrived at the camp which might lead to trouble with Canadians and Scots at a dance at the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute on Saturday. He concludes with some general comments on life in the Royal Air Force.

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.

Lido August 5th
Darling Johnnie, I have been favoured with a shower of literature & forms by His Majesty's National savings Committee & have spent the evening trying to digest them. Its becoming gradually clearer & I have done a lot of filling up & filling in, & tomorrow when Barbara is at home I shall go out & tackle the neighbours again. If only I could get the Evans, or any other two to join in, we should buy 3 certificates per week, which would simplify matters for me. I must see what I can do about it. I'm buying a 2/6 stamp per week myself, & have put Frances down for 6d as well. Barbara is also having 6d – she already has 5/- in her ambulance

station group. They sent among other things a couple of posters to be displayed so I have nailed one up on the tree stump outside the garden.
Barbara's two friends Maggie & Sue came to tea yesterday. They are both very charming in their different ways. Mary Simmonds is coming on Thursday with her small son David, & a friend of Ba's shift leader Betty Hughes by name Phyllis Rosenberg, may also come over sometimes when Ba & Betty are on duty. Her husband has just been called up & she's feeling the gap a bit too, I think. Have you had your exam results from Prestwick yet? I'm very interested to hear how many of them fail. Have Norman's lot heard yet? You will be glad to hear that your wireless probably didn't explode the

other evening after all. I've discovered that the wire leading to the reading lamp has burnt out, so that would account for the phenomenon - & also means I can't have the fire on this evening & I'm feeling pretty chilly. It's been an extraordinary day of alternate brilliant sunshine & tropical downpours of rain, & we have been dashing in & out after the washing & the baby all day long.Your daughter is really extraordinary to put on weight at the rate she does. She was 14.11 last week, & now she's 15.6! It's terrific. I sometimes think she's about to cut her to 2 teeth, the gums look so white & hard, but maybe that's premature. The bottom ones should come first

anyway. I've written to Mrs Stenzel & sent her a cheque for £2 in case she needs is for her fare, & also given her your address in case there's time for you to visit her, but I rather doubt if there will be. It isn't so necessary now anyway, & you'll be seeing her when you come on leave – may it be soon!
We had a cable from Mother today saying among other things “overdraft puzzle satisfactorily settled”. Does that mean that we have been doing something wrong by mistake? I believe Mother has closed her a/c at Grindlays & the idiots have probably been paying the rates, insurance premium etc out of her account still & running up an overdraft instead of using Daddy's.

Probably Mother has written to us about it & we shall get a lot of out of date correspondence on the subject during the next few months. I've ordered, received & paid for 5 cwt of coal. I don't think either coal or coke shed could hold another 5 cwt just yet. We're not using coal yet of course, & not much coke either, with bathes only every other day (what civic virtue!)
I haven't had any socks or hankies from you yet. Don't let them pile up too long - & don't wear them too long either please. Peter's generally arrive on Mondays, so if you could arrange to send yours to arrive then too it would be more convenient to do them all

together in the dolly tub. Now I really must stop. I'd made a firm resolution to turn out the dump this evening, but its 8.40 already, so I'll have to hurry. I'm sure you wouldn't like me [underlined] not [/underlined] to turn it out, would you!
I do love you so much & I'm so glad you miss me, tho' I hate to think of you feeling lonely & ache to be with you more than ever. It's topping getting a letter from you every day, it arrives about 7.45 am & rewards me for getting up early & doing the dusting.
With all my love to my dearest, Ursula
PS I've been showing Frances the string of teething beads today & with a great effort she now takes them with both hands but won't bit them yet.

I've just received your letters of 2nd & 3rd, the 3rd arriving early this morning & the other one at 11 am. I'm having your lighter seen to & will send it as soon as poss. Pity about the matches. I'd got 4 large boxes ready to send you. More photos from Howies enclosed. Joanna also sent another emergency ration card for this week isn't she sweet? They've gone on holiday now. If you don't want the photos of us I may send them to the parents, but will keep that of Jim & Iain, for our album. I'm awfully pleased about your exam results. Well done, Johnny. I knew you'd be [sketch of buoy] (buoy with top marks.)
[page break]
I should think you'd stand a better chance of a commission now than ever. Did Norman get recommended? And has friend Rowan failed & been ejected yet?
You'll hardly be surprised to hear that Mrs Somerville has ratted on me already. She didn't come on Monday but I thought that was because it was Bank Holiday. However she didn't come today either, so that's that. Luckily another woman applied meanwhile, so I went & got her this morning – Mrs Davidson, & she's doing marvellously. I'm having her 4 mornings a week. I wonder how long she'll stay?! Lots of love darling. Congratulations on continuing to be a GB as well as [sketch of buoy]! Yours always, Ursula.

My dear Douglas,
I suppose you feel as we do when a cable arrives – how wonderful that we can send a message to each other in one day. I do feel to have something very special to look forward to when I have sent a prepaid cable. Your reply arrived at 12-30 Tues. morning so that was good wasn’t it & such a joy & relief to know that you are all right. We seem to have been a very long time without letters from you. There is still the big gap from May 11th to June 15th (via Tangier) then to July 10th. That letter made a record journey, as we got it on Saturday afternoon Aug 2nd a few hours after I had sent your cable. It was good of Mr Jakman to send you a message. I don’t think things have been too good for him in business & feel very sorry that he should be so harassed. Strange how some people have smooth lives & some rough.
The people around us here certainly don’t know [deleted] which [/deleted] much of the strain of war. Mrs Chester has two sons, one at Haifa a post office official, the other in the Civil service in the I.O.U. Our neighbours at the other side lived retired but

the gentleman got bored so is keeping a traveller’s round together – for the duration. His only son is a gas engineer (reserved occupation) the daughter’s husband an architect, also reserved. Next door to them the son is a teacher, reserved. Mrs Fletcher’s two sons are in the civil service. Except they cannot just go buy a lb of butter when they want it or a choice cut of lamb they do not suffer any inconvenience, so far.
Dad has just been mowing the lawns, which are very similar to those at Kensal. He has done it all in half an hour & it looks beautiful & has been much admired. Monday & yesterday (Tues) were really wet days. Today has been fine & bright but very cold & we are thankful for a fire tonight. Always I am thinking of you these days August are full of memories – some very happy & others very very sad. – Two years on Saturday since we set out on our marvellous holiday together. In the light of succeeding events the experience was priceless & has brought much comfort to me. Now love it is nearly dark so I will say Goodnight to you. How I do wish I could share my cup of tea with you but no reprising now. Rather a great thankfulness that we are able to keep in touch with each other & tho’ I know you must sometimes grow very weary of your internment I try to look always to the future & the day of joyous reunion.
All love from
Mother & Dad.

Dear Mr. Newton,
I was very pleased to receive your letter of the I6th. [sic] inst. and to know that you are coming over here for a few days leave.
Of course I remember you and your two comrades who unfortunately were not so lucky as you and were taken prisoners of war in France.
I have started the above forwarding and shipping firm a few months ago and am very little free on week days so if at all possible I would suggest you coming to Antwerp either on a Saterday [sic] or a Sunday. My wife (ex: Miss van Eeckhoven who you met in I94I; [sic] we were married in July) and myself would be most pleased if you could stay a whole Sunday with us and to show you all the places you were on the 6th. & 7th. August I94I. [sic] – Mr Duquenne to whose house you were brought in Antwerp is also most eager to see you again.
Of course if you cannot manage a Sunday or Saterday [sic] you are always welcome on a week-day. Please avoid a Wednesday for most business men have to go to the Brussels exchange. I myself go on Wednesdays to Brussels and am at the PRINCES TAVERN, Place de Brouckère from two to three o’clock.
If possible please let me know by ‘phone (no 38009 during office hours and no 762I7 otherwise) when you will come to see us. You will of course come in the morning and dine with us and if you can stay overnight so much the better.
We are all looking forward to your arrival.
Yours sin-cerely, [sic]

Officer Commanding,
No. 12 Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
Binbrook, Lincs.
6th August, 1941.
Dear Mrs Newton,
I was deeply grieved to send you the information that your husband is missing. He took off on an operational flight on the night 5th/6th August, but the aircraft in which he was flying as Air Gunner, failed to return.
Your husband is greatly missed in the Squadron, where he has always been much liked, and I can assure you from my own point of view as his Commanding Officer that I could always depend on him as being thoroughly reliable. His loss will be greatly felt.
I would like to express my deepest sympathy on behalf of the Officers and men of the Squadron, and whilst I have no desire to raise what may be a false hope, sincerely trust that we shall soon receive some favourable news of your husband and other members of the crew.
With regard to his personal effects, these are being despatched to the Royal Air Force Depository, Colnbrook, Slough, Bucks, and you will be hearing from them in due course.
Yours Sincerely
RH. Maw
Wing Commander,
Commanding,
No. 12 Squadron.
