July 24 1941.
My Dearest Mother,
Thank you for yours written on June 8th and am glad to hear that you are are [sic] all keeping well Am glad to say that am well and happy myself but as I said before this is not much of a place to be stationed as it is so difficult to get anywhere to go on the spree. However
[page break]
[circled 2]
perhaps thats [sic] just as well as we are kept very busy and apart from that have not much cash to play with as we only get paid at the end of the month. That is one disadvantage of being an officer and all drinks cigs. etc are put on the mess bill which is rather dangerous but am pretty certain that I shall manage fine in that respect. All our pay is paid into the bank so shall possibly manage to save a little as there are practically no outside expenses
[page break]
[circled 3]
As you will know from my last letter am going on bombers which will probably be Hampdens. Have not started flying them yet but have been practicing day & night cross countries on Ansons which are very easy to fly. Night cross countries are strange at first but there is always a navigator to pick out beacons etc. The blackout is very effective indeed and one can fly over towns never noticing them. The only dangerous thing is that some towns have balloon barrages which makes
[page break]
[circled 4]
one rather nervous at times.
I think it would be grand flying at night in a country without a blackout.
You mention a fire in the old setting soon. Yes it will [deleted] fie [/deleted] be wonderful when this is over and I can join you all again, but its no good getting sentimental about it as “there’s a war on” and in the meantime am enjoying myself as much as I can, but tell Dad that I have not forgotten his advice about girls and “booze”, and have adhered pretty strictly to it. Don’t think that I am not
[page break]
[circled 5]
going out with girls and I do have a drink and get “merry” on special occasions i.e. when I got my wings.
Well dear mother must close as am doing a Cross Country tonight and must get particulars about it.
Much love to you all
from your loving son
Donald

My Dear Mother & Dad
The last time I wrote was Sunday the 20th when I received your letter dated July 8th enclosing the two photographs of the old Lady & the Old Gentleman taken down the garden path. To-day I received your letter dated July 6th enclosing two more photographs taken sitting in the rockery garden. I am very pleased to have received these letters, & exceptionally delighted with the snaps. I really was glad to get them & to see how you both are looking after these twelve months. Dad who I expected to find extremely thin, looked on the contrary to be very fit & well, & apart from the fact that Mother’s hair has greyed she looks just the same to me as in the days of the pillion riding, which days may we soon re-capture. I am eagerly awaiting the remaining photographs. They mean such a lot these days, & I spend a great deal of time looking at them & thinking of the days gone bye. [sic] I am pleased to learn that you have received the last letters & p.cs written from Le Kef. and the first four I sent from Médéa. The correspondence does seem to get through in time, sometimes a little out of sequence
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
but I often find that some of your out of date letters answer some question or other about which I was doubtful. A very noteworthy case was your letter which said my allotment had been increased & you were receiving it. That letter was behind the times in getting through. It has been very hot since Sunday, we are just about reaching the peak hot weather period which lasts until about mid or end September. I am writing this letter to you sitting on my bed at 8.45 pm, wearing a pair of small white underpants which has represented my [indecipherable word] clothing for days. Sometimes, on dress occasions, ie, on our organised morning walks, it is better to be smartly dressed & put on a pair of khaki shorts. And to think I used to work in a tailoring business, but in these climates one is not sartorially minded. As I am writing to you [deleted] k [/deleted] now my right hand, which is clenched, is dripping perspiration. Don’t get the idea that we go around perpetually [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] perspiring, that is not the case, because as you will understand the heat out here is a dry heat, & therefore fortunately a fairly healthy one, provided one treats the mid-day & afternoon sun with respect. It is strange that in your to-day’s letter you should mention making silver marmalade, because in letters which must have crossed I said we were making jam (of a sort) but which was edible. Since the arrival of the Red Cross parcels I have made a number of rice puddings. You remember how I used to hate
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
milk puddings. I cannot bake them but boil the rice in milk made from the Ambrosia powder, & add two eggs beaten up. Eggs & rice are cheap & it costs about 2 francs per person for pudding. To-day I stewed my ration of plums & had them with the pudding. As tomatoes are in season & cost next to nothing I fry these when I can get the fat, but the latter is a problem to get hold of. Since my last boxing match my nose which you will recall was often troublesome, has been sore, but now is getting all right again. It is a pity because it may bar me from future fights as it will always be a weak link & one which any decent oponent [sic] will immediately go for. Boxing is a terrific sport & it is not until next day that one realises what one has “stopped” & then greet a bruised opponent & find he is just realising what he has been the recipient of the night before. If this letter is a little muddled don’t blame me, but I have had so many interruptions people keep breezing along & sitting on the bed etc. The tables are occupied. From to-day’s photographs the opinion is that I am like Mother, but I look very different in this semi nude state bouncing around like a cherub. You know in conditions like ours one realises just what children, in fact “kids”, men are or can be, & yet one feels, or perhaps I should say I feel that when we get home we shall be more
[page break]
[underlined] 4. [/underlined]
“men” than ever. The things I have learned are numerous, & I think often of the saying of the Yorkshire man. “If tha does owt” etc. but life here is complex & extremely dull & yet viewed in a philosophical light might be interesting, that depend on ones patience. It is extremely difficult to do nothing & do it well. You might say – well learn French – but it is impossible at least to learn it decently, because as we are the opportunities for learning French are better in England. Regarding the cables. As I have explained in earlier letters I [underlined] have [/underlined] received three pre-paid cables from you & replied to each in turn, the last one was July 13th. I don’t know why the reply to the second did not arrive, but if in future the same occurs again don’t worry because other people have had cables go astray quite unaccountedly, [sic] but by far the largest percentage get through. I am eagerly awaiting your next cable & do hope it affirms the arrival of my last reply, & that there will not be any hitches in future. Once again it is time to say good-bye until next letter. I am wondering if I shall be in time with good wishes for Dad’s birthday. I have included them in many earlier letters in the hope that some will arrive in time, but Dad will know where my thoughts will be on September 5th. And now good-night – may you keep fit, safe & well. With all my love, Douglas.

Sunday. July 6th/41
My dear Douglas.
I must begin my letter with a correction. Last Sunday I wrote & dated my letter June 30th which, it wasn’t, being the 29th. However you must excuse me now a days for all such stupid mistakes. Believe me, the old man with the scythe has been very busy these past 27 years & my memory is really deplorable. Well love I’ve been worrying a lot these few day as there has been no reply to my prepaid (5/-) [inserted] (10/3. altogether) [/inserted] cable sent last Monday & I am anxiously waiting to hear that all is well with you. The last cable from you (a prepaid reply to mine) [inserted] Dated June 21st [/inserted] told that you had been moved again, giving a new address Camp Militaire Aumale Algerie, to which I sent another cable last Monday. And now I must just wait & hope. This is Dad’s last days rest after his holiday. It is really lovely living here & we have been very content just pottering around. The weather has been marvellous & we have been out of doors most of the time. Thursday we went to Calverley but once again I am tempted to say “their ways are not your ways neither are my thoughts your thoughts”.
I am sending two snaps taken with
[page break]
your “Brownie” camera on the roll of films which has been in for several years. You can form some idea how lovely our rockery has been with Spring flowers. There are eight photos & I will try to send them 2 together as the Air Mail letters must be kept light. The pamphlet from the Post Office says we are allowed to send snaps to Prisoners & I do hope you will get them. This morning our neighbour, Miss Chester, has taken more photos of me & Dad together. Her camera is a very good one so we are hoping to send you lovely pictures next time. Well love it has been a great joy to us to have two letters & one p.c. from you this week. Both letters from Medea dated 27/4/41 & 1/5/41 & a p.c. from Kef dated 11/4/41 which told that you have received an Air Mail letter by ordinary mail for which you must blame the p.o. at Nelson as it was posted over the counter there. Now I always have blue Air Mail stamps & 4d ones at hand & post the letters any where. I sent 3 each week to Kef for some time & am wondering if any of them have been sent on to you. Do hope so. These little “wiggly” lines on my paper are caused by the wind which keeps blowing the paper about. We are sitting in the tent at the foot of the garden & it is very pleasant. Dad is not doing any night work for 4 weeks owing to the long daylight. It is just a case of watching in company with 3 other men. I’m afraid I shall not be allowed to tell you more than that. Last night I made lemon marmalade – the first lemons we’ve seen for months. It is a great success. Once again all our love. Mother & Dad.

Despite earlier army reports being reliable, it is claimed that there is now German disinformation concerning the Russian campaign and the high number of casualties and prisoners.
After spotting a battle cruiser on 22nd July, an RAF operation was carried out on 24th July with damage to the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst battle cruisers and Prinz Eugen cruiser. 34 Messerschmitts were shot down. It claims German ships are now effectively confined to ports.
In a London radio broadcast, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s adviser, Harry Hopkins, outlines American assistance to Britain, including joint patrols by warships, significant numbers of aircraft, food, and military equipment already en route.
Page 2
Ten Serbs are hanged in Pancevo, on the orders of Bandelow after posters appeared stating that ten Serbs would be hanged for every German soldier killed or wounded. There are photographs of the hangings and of the notice.
Several occupied cities were fined for using the V-sign (for victory) as an act of defiance. To counter this, the propaganda ministry has stolen the sign for its own use.
Claims public is being deceived about share dividends being reduced (regulation to limit the distribution of profits on 21st June 1941).
Page 3
The RAF flight range will increase as nights draw in, with heavier bombs at their disposal. Advice is dispensed to German urban populations on preparations to take for the autumn and winter.
Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, on 15 July denigrates German media propaganda on the state of British nutrition; he claims German prisoners are amazed at how abundant it is and points to American supplies in the coming year with a higher nutritional value than the last fifteen years.
America and Britain and its allies have frozen all Japanese assets as a result of it taking French-Indochina.
Page 4
By taking over protection of Iceland, the United States has reduced the danger zone for British ships crossing the Atlantic, fulfilling the United States’ Secretary of State, Cordell Hull’s promise that weapons and foodstuff would safely reach their destination.
With the news that Dr Robert Ley had visited some bombed cities in West Germany, the correspondent makes some comparisons between the good things England is doing for its people compared to Germany’s leaders.
In addition to all the steelworks, armaments works and mines acquired in a number of territories, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring has acquired Omnipol A.G. as an import export company to buy and sell as it wants.
