An account of the resource
Collection contains 26 items and concerns Squadron Leader Denis Clyde-Smith Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Flying Cross, who joined the Royal Air Force and trained as a pilot in 1937. He flew in the anti aircraft cooperation role including remotely piloted Queen Bee aircraft before serving on Battle aircraft on 32 Squadron. He completed operational tours on Wellington with 115 and 218 Squadrons and Wellington and Lancaster with 9 Squadron after which he went to the aircraft and armament experimental establishment at Boscombe Down. The collection consists of two logbooks, aircraft histories of some of the aircraft he flew, photographs of people and aircraft, newspaper articles and gallantry award certificate.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by John Clyde-Smith and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Pilot’s flying log book for Flight Sergeant Ernest Smith from 11 February 1939 to 31 March 1943, detailing his pilot training and 20 operations with 144 Squadron on the following targets in Belgium, France and Germany: Aachen, Antwerp, Brest, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frisian Islands (Nectarine), Hamburg, Kiel, and Mannheim. He served at RAF Rochester, RAF Ternhill, RAF Upper Heyford, RAF Hemswell, RAF North Luffenham, RAF Babdown and RAF Hixon. Aircraft flown were Tutor, Magister, Anson, Hampden, Hereford, Oxford and Wellington. Includes annotations including 'baled out' and 'crashed' (twice). Another note reads: 'SEP 3rd 1939 WAR DECLARED ON GERMANY'. He was assessed as a pilot 'above the average' several times, and later served as a flying instructor. He records his participation in the first 1000 bomber operation to Cologne whilst serving with 16 Operational Training Unit.

J Flint’s Flying Log Book covering the period 30 August 1938 to 16 February 1944.
Detailing his flying training and operations flown as pilot. He was stationed at RAF Tollerton (27 E&RFTS), RAF Hanworth (5 EFTS), RAF Yatesbury (10 EFTS), RAF Brize Norton (2 SFTS), RAF St Athan (SoAN), RAF Cottesmore RAF Saltby (14 OTU), RAF Scampton (49 Squadron), (RAF Finningley (7 BATF) and RAF Bruntingthorpe and Bitteswell (29 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Magister, Tiger Moth, Oxford, Anson, Hampden and Wellington. He flew seventeen night operations with 49 Squadron. Targets not specified. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Bowden and Pilot Officer Kerridge.

Pilots flying log book one for L V Rosser, covering the period from 4 March 1939 to 19 July 1943. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Kidlington, RAF Woodley, RAF Grantham, RAF Kinloss, RAF Topcliffe, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, RAF Dishforth, RAF Abingdon, and RAF Chipping Warden. Aircraft flown were Magister, Anson, Hind, Whitley, Halifax, Wellington, Martinet, Lysander, Defiant, Wellington, Hind and Hurricane. He flew a total of 24 night time operations, 6 with 35 Squadron, 11 with 58 Squadron and 7 with 51 Squadron. Written in RAF pilot's flying log book by Sergeant, pilot Rosser, Lewis Victor, RAFVR - diary of night bombing operations. Gives date, aircraft, crew, target and description of each operation. Also included are extracts from the Bomber Command war diaries concerning the overall operation numbers and losses. Covers 23 operations on first tour from 11 May 1941 to 15 November 1941 and then 14 operations on second tour from 5 March 1945 until 24 April 1945. Aircraft flown Whitley, Halifax and Lancaster. Includes some newspaper cuttings concerning particular operations. Operations on first tour to Bremen, Cologne, Schleswig Holstein, Duisburg, Hannover, Kiel, Rotterdam, Emden, Bremen again, Rotterdam again (crashed after undercarriage problems), Dunkirk, Le Havre, Mannheim, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Brest, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Nuremburg, Wilhelmshaven, Calais, Frankfurt again, Kiel (cancelled crashed).
