Tues. April 1st 1941.
My dear Douglas.
It is a long time since I wrote to you, about 3 weeks, but I’ve had the worst cold I’ve ever had & it has made me very will & depressed. But now I am feeling much more like myself so I am having a little talk to you. It was a great joy & relief to get the letter from the Air Ministry on March 26th with the message sent by the American Consul to the effect that you got our cable on Feb 5th & that you were well, writing fortnightly, & sent love. Our last letter from you was dated Nov. 29th but we’ve had 2 p.c.s [postcards] dated 20/12/40 & 28/12/40. The last one told that you had got my letter of Nov. 6th & we were so pleased. It made a very good journey didn’t it? Very many letters have been sent to you since then & I do hope you have received many of them. So many people have written to you & Lena[?] promised to write every week.
[page break]
At least her letters are amusing & cheery. Have you heard from John lately? He is still at Harrogate. “Ulula”[?] arrived last week & I do wish I could send it to you. It is always interesting. Freddy Garnett died within a few months of his retirement at Southport & H. Lob. Was a victim of the Dec. raid. These are 4 names in the list of prisoners of war. I don’t know them. Shall I send your name in, with the already overdue subscription? I intended to go to Kensal[?] this morning but the weather was very bad when I should have left home so have put it off until tomorrow. Mrs Kay’s “char” is doing a bit of cleaning & I shall try to let the house furnished. The winter has been a terror[?] this time & there was heavy snow when Dad left this morning. It is April fool’s day & brings many memories of the “fools” you usually managed to make.
Did I tell you what a nice neighbour I had at No. 10 – a Jewish evacuee from London. She is really very sweet. The husband is very[?] delicate: he is in the clothing business & in reserved occupation. You will be surprised to learn that Das [indecipherable word] have gone out of business. The boys are all away now & Enoch[?] – the ex-captior[?] is in very poor health with heart trouble. Miss Balderstone has now retired from A.R.P. work & is acting as [deleted one word] [one/two indecipherable words] to a Director of [one/two indecipherable words]. She seems very happy in her new work. Did I tell you that [one indecipherable word] wanted to come back to their house, but she has decided to keep it for the 3 years. Well love I think that is all for now. With all our love & constant thought. Mother & Dad.

Details recent letter from him and comments on content. Catches up with news and gossip of family and friends.

Darling,
Many thanks for your long letter to hand today, [corrected] By [/corrected] the time you get this I shall be thinking about getting my stuff together & be wondering what the inside of a new camp is like I am sitting on P.A.R. Station with an hr & half to wait for a train to Bristol. I am on my way to HEDNESFORD. and I have got a 24 hr pass so that I can have best part of a day at Wyrley. How do you like it? Now you had better write to me at Dads for the week end. Then I can let you have my full address when I know it. There is one regret about leaving Newquay. Summer has just started the weather has taken up after being rough for nearly 14 days.
[page break]
Well I shant [sic] get my 7 days leave now for some time. I dont [sic] even know if I shall get 48 hrs off here. I doubt it? but any way you can come over to Wyrley. & I surely manage an odd sleeping out Pass now and again
I am anxious to see the Boys as well as you especially Tony. He [corrected] must [/corrected] be getting very interesting now.
By the way it looks as though you had better pay that 18/9 for the car insurance suspected what was the trouble really.
It seems funny that you have not heard from the Civil Liabilities sextion [sic]. They will probably have been in touch with the J.C. I though

I have no idea how long the course lasts but I expect I shall be at Cannock Chase for 3 months or so anyway.
If the weather is good it should be a treat although the Flight Lft [sic] in charge of stores to let me that it was not a good station. Anyway if the grub is not much I am only a [corrected] 3 [/corrected] hour ride from Dads. It might pay me to get my

Médéa, le 28 Mai 1941.
cher Douglas.
