My Dearest Mother,
Thanks very much for two letters from you – one written about the end of January and the other 17th March. And also a letter from Harry and Phyllis. I hope Frances will recover successfully from her operation.
I must apologise for not writing for two weeks but really mother there has been nothing to say until just recently. Did not have an out-of-the way birthday at all. Thanks very much for the cables received on the 28th. Had letters and cards from Uncle Jack and Aunt Bess. They said they were all well. I wrote to you when I was on leave there and do hope you received the letters as they were about the longest I have written.
Have flown quite a lot recently. My first solo cross country was from here to Worcester and then on to a place just North of [deleted] Shawbury [/deleted] Shrewsbury. I passed right
[page break]
over our old camp at Bridgnorth. It does not seem so long ago that I was there.
The next Cross Country I did with another pupil as they all are now. We flew from here to Bath and from there were supposed to go to Reading but something went amiss and we were near Salisbury. However we reached [deleted] Sal [/deleted] Reading and set off for home but again we went astray and after flying around in blind circles for about an hour we discovered ourselves over Stratford-on-Avon so we set course for home then but as we were running short of petrol by that time we had to land about half way at another aerodrome and after refuelling came on home [deleted] aft [/deleted] without further ado. However the next day we managed it OK. So you see we see quite a lot of the country from the air as well as on the ground. Just managed to pick out Gertie’s place at Box but we are not allowed to fly low over towns etc so could not do anything spectacular.
At present am loafing in the barracks as I started night flying last night and we are allowed the following morning off after night
[page break]
flying. Managed to go solo after a few circuits with the instructor. We only started at 3 am as there was an air raid warning on before that and the Gerries are just as keen to shoot down planes at night as we are [inserted] to shoot them. [/inserted] Last week another fellow was up with our instructor during a warning and when about 400 ft up coming in to land a Gerrie worried out of the darkness and let rip and as our plane [deleted] was [/deleted] had its Navigation lights on the German did not have much difficulty in bringing ours down. The pupil, an Irish fellow was wounded twice in the right arm and the instructor in the stomach but despite that and the plane being on fire they managed a crash landing on [deleted] the [/deleted] a nearby field. The pupil was very brave and stayed in to drag his instructor out of the plane while being able to use his left arm only Sad to relate the poor instructor only lived a few days but the pupil is not doing so bad. However as that taught the authorities a lesson there is no flying during a warning now so please don’t start worrying about anything like that happening to me. Night
[page break]
flying is not so terrifying as I expected in fact with the flare path and so on landing is comparatively easy.
I note what you say about Cables so will send one every pay day starting on Friday ie every second week. The reason Ive [sic] not done it before is that if I forget [deleted] and [/deleted] once [deleted] we [/deleted] you would probably think that I had something wrong and worry. However will try and keep it up.
The cigarette question in this country is becoming rather acute and one has to be pretty smart to [deleted] put awy [/deleted] buy any and the position isn’t improving any so I wonder if you will please send me a few periodically and as I should have some credits you can deduct same.
Have not received any of the parcels you mentioned not even from Barkers so presume something has gone wrong. However thanks all the same and it is just too bad.
Gosh these Gerries seem to be pasting up this country awfully aren’t they and London certainly seems to be having a very bad time But still I don’t think they are getting off exactly Scot free.
Well dear Mother must close now with very much love to you all from your ever loving son Donald

Description
An account of the resource
Writes of letters received and thanks her for hers. Had not written previous week as nothing had happened. Had flown a lot lately and mentions first solo cross country including experiences and route as well as having to land to refuel. Says he has started night flying and had gone solo. Mentions bombing delayed night flying. Recounts that last week a student had been shot at while airborne by a German and wounded. After be set on fire and crashing the student dragged the instructor out of the aircraft. This resulted in authorities ruling that no flying should take place during air raid warnings. Goes on to discuss sending cables home, cigarettes, parcels they had sent and bombing in London.

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Trefilan May 11th
Darling Johnnie, the more I read your letter of 7th & consider its author, the more I realise that I have the truest & best husband in all the world. Your love is like a protective wall around me, even when you are so far away, & your understanding & generosity towards me makes me feel that I must pull myself together & make a big effort to be worthy of you. You'll probably snort when you read this, but I mean it seriously, darling. You mean more to me than I can ever say, & I feel I'm somehow a better person for having been loved by you.
After considering your letter carefully I went round to see Mrs Williams (Ellesmere) on a friendly visit – she's a nice woman & her house is certainly well-kept. But as soon as I introduced myself she informed me regretfully that she had taken an RAF man & his wife – tho' I hadn't said a word about going to stay with her. However that settles that. The other Mrs Williams is going back to her
[page break]
job at the Post Office, & evacuees are arriving daily, so that I'm afraid my chances of finding anywhere suitable here are pretty slender. In short it seems that there really are no other feasible alternatives at the moment than Lido or the B.H. (as it is quite open to question whether or not I should be invited to Priors Marston & I certainly couldn't suggest it myself). So I have made up my mind to write to Miss Crow tomorrow & say I'll come for a few weeks to try the arrangement out, as she suggests, & I promise you, dearest, that if the work is really too much I will give it up. It's not long till Whitsun now, & if Ba is coming up to fetch me I must give her time to apply for leave.
This afternoon Miss Forbes walked in & we had a little chat. She doesn't seem to know you or your family very well, but showed an
[page break
interest in all our doings. I walked into Aber. & back this morning, collected Jane & gave her a thorough good brushing & powdering with Pulvex. She's definitely got fleas in her ears, & probably elsewhere too, tho' not having a tooth-comb I couldn't go over her thoroughly. She looked better when I'd finished with her anyway, & I hope to do her again soon. I noticed that while we were out she was eating grass at every opportunity so I suppose she's a bit off colour & will give the Royles some powders to give her daily. I shall be glad to have her back again in our sole charge.
I enclose the photos – unfortunately neither the one of you & Frances nor us 3 together came out. The negs don't look so hopeless to me but anyway no prints were made. You can keep any of these you like, I must have more made in any case to send to Mother.
[page break]
I'll try & get some better ones of her; these are not focussed too well, I must have been nearer than two & a half feet in my eagerness to get her. She broke all records at 2 pm today be performing in the potty both before & after her feed & having as dry nappy for the first time. To make up, she's been restless this afternoon.
Now I must post this, as it is 4.30 & I'm not sure how late the collection will be (its supposed to go at 4.30). I do hope your cold is better now – how do you feel in your flying kit up aloft? I hope it is really big enough for you. If anyone has a camera there, do try & send me a photo of you in full rig-out. All my love to you, my darling husband, you are so precious to me. Pumpkin sends her love too. Yours always, Ursula

My Dear Mother & Dad,
I was very pleased indeed to receive your cable of the 9th May, yesterday morning, in reply to my cable of the 7th May. This is the quickest bit of news to and from yet, & it is strange that each cable should contain a change of address. By now I expect that you will have everything moved to 191, Halifax Rd: I do hope you will find the place all right and that you will be able to settle comfortably. I have written a few letters to you from this place, all by air mail. Two via the American Consul in Algiers, & three or four independently by Air Mail. I have since learned that it is unlikely that the independent letters will get through so in future I shall send all mail by Air Mail through the Consul. Just in case my earlier letters have gone astray I will repeat that I have been here 2 1/2 weeks, & am allowed a lot more liberty. Can walk about the place, & stay in the above Hotel. It is quite an ordinary place, three of us share a bedroom, the same three as were together in Kef. Tony sent a cable a week ago & got a quick reply from England & accordingly I was prompted to do the same thing to you with equal success. Unfortunately, I cannot afford it as a regular practice, my budget is not
[page break]
at all elastic, so in future I shall have to rely on letters. However, I propose to write to you twice a week by Air Mail through the Consul & hope that letters will not take long this way. Three days ago I received four letters from you dated Feb 23rd, March 2nd, April 11th & 14th. The last two came via Air Mail & went to Kef first so you will see what a great saving the Air Mail service from England is. I strongly advise it for all future occasions. We have to stamp our own letters from here. The weather has been cold for about 2 weeks up here. We are very high, over 3000 ft, & as a result I imagine at present it is as cold, if not colder than in England, especially during the night. I am going about in a roll neck pullover, & at Kef on January 4th I was sunbathing. Amazing weather. Have played in 2 football matches since I came here, on two successive days. Must be heavier than I used to be because I dont [sic] go down quite so easily now. I cannot say very much to you in these letters, it reminds me of the old rule of “chatty conversation”. There are good opportunities here for walks. As I explained in earlier letters which you might have received, the country is hilly & wooded, rather like North Wales only much more vast. In fact an ideal place for a holiday in normal times, with plenty of money, time, & a car & one’s own folk. And in that strain I must say good-bye until next letter. As always I send you every good wish for a more successful & happier future. May you remain safe & well. All my love,
Douglas.
P.S. Thank you very much for the birthday wishes which arrived in very good time.
