My Dear Mother & Dad,
Today I am very pleased to have received four letters from you dated Feb. 23rd. March 2nd. April 11th and April 14th. The latter two written during Easter week-end came via Air Mail for 4d, so you will see what a terrific difference the Air Mail service makes. For a long time now I have been writing to you via Air Mail but I am afraid that it takes much longer from Africa, than from England. I am hoping that letters will not take so long from here as from Kef. The day before yesterday I sent you a cable & asked you for a reply. Replies have been received here within 48 hours of [inserted] [indecipherable word] [/inserted] despatch [inserted] from here. [/inserted] This I hope will give you up to date news of me, but unfortunately on account of the terrific expense (perhaps I should say comparative terrific expense – for [underlined] air [/underlined] packets) I cannot manage to repeat this, at least for some time. However, I am all right, & quite safe here, & I know you now understand the uncertainty of deliveries of mail so you will not worry on my behalf. I shall write to you about every 5 days. I did not hear the Sandy Macpherson record because I have not been able to hear any broadcast since last October – what a pity I missed “a Brownbird”. However I have plenty of news from you now – your
[page break]
cables (two) have been received, & I know all about your changes of addresses. You do appear to have had a sever winter, but I think N. Africa has too. The weather now is typical English May. It has rained all day to-day. I believe up here in the mountains the really hot weather is during July – August & September. It was terrifically hot when we arrived here last year; there wasn’t a blade of grass anywhere & the flies, I have never seen anything like them. So far this year there are none at all, & the country here is beautifully green. You mention the Easters we have known in the past. Yes I shall not forget them & the memories. I hope I shall not spend any more Easters here. Yes I heard from you some time ago that you sold my bike. It was the best thing to do. You & E.W.T. are the only people from whom I receive letters nowadays. Just at first there was an inundation from “tout le monde” (everybody) but it was a nine days wonder. You know I can go anywhere with my French, but I cannot understand the French films at all, neither can I understand the wireless (Yes we have the wireless here, at Médéa) It is O.K. talking to the actual people, but mechanical voice reproduction leaves me cold. I expect when I get back to England I shall be automatically coming out with French phrases for a little while. We get so used to greeting people. Shake hands all round when we say “How do you do” & again when we say “good-bye”. Don’t know whether we are coming or going. Well here is the bottom of the page. Here is my usual wish – that the future may be a much happier one, & that everything will go more smoothly for you, re. everything. I send you all my love, & hope you will keep well & safe.
[underlined] Douglas [/underlined]

Regards from the Sandfords Trefilan May 7th
Darling Johnnie, Thank you for your letter of the 4th. I won't listen to a word of your being “a complete boob up aloft” & such like nonsense. Remember the fuss you made about the navigation here, & how you were no good at it? And who was top of his form? Now no more misery, remember that you are the best potential observer in the place, & keep that inferiority complex in its place. You know that being nervous about your abilities is the best way to handicap them. You can't help being better than those other fellows. Frances expects . . . . It's about 3 o'clock now & I had fed Frances & put her out in her Karrikot in the front porch when who should come along but Mrs Williams & friend (who called yesterday to be formally introduced to Frances.) Of course she had to go & show Frances off to the friend pulling the blanket back so that the sun got in her eyes, & I'd just got rid of them & soothed Frances off again when a complete stranger pops in, a Jewess Mrs Sandford said, & does the same thing, explaining that Frances was suffocating! So
[page break]
now she's wide awake & I've had to bring her in to the dining room until she's got off to sleep again. What a nuisance people are. I always leave the front door open & sit in the dining room while she's outside to keep marauders off, like Miss Betsy Trotwood & the donkeys in D. Cop!
I was in Aber. again yesterday to do some shopping, & got you some cigarettes which I'll send off tomorrow as the P.O. is closed this afternoon. I also went to the NAAFI & heard that they had had some oranges there, tho' half the case was bad. Of course none were left, but the chappy said they might have some more & if so he'd keep me some, so I'm going in tomorrow to see what luck I have. I managed to get some dried fruit salad however, so that was something. I also called in for mail at Aston Villa found two waiting for me – a broadside from Grindlays enclosed herewith for your perusal – do we do anything about it? & a letter from Mrs Hughes. Mitre Farm, together with a string of brightly coloured teething beads for Frances. I'll send her letter on to you, when I've replied to it. I've also had a letter from Mrs Blaikley; you remember David said she'd had an operation? Apparently a week later, when she was just getting
[page break]
over the pain, the Nursing Home was bombed out, tho' none of the 20 patients or nurses were hurt. Rather horrid all the same! She says she'll send an offering for Frances as soon as she's fit enough.
Ba has sent on a snorter from the PMG regarding the wireless licence, all printed in red ink & threatening death & destruction & a fine of £10. I think I'll drop him a soothing line & tell him the house is empty. She has posted off your slippers to you, so you should receive them soon. This morning Mrs S. went into town to have her hair permanently waved & I was left in sole command. After bathing & feeding Frances I washed up, washed my daily quota of nappies, got lunch for Mr Sandford & myself, & afterwards got Michael's & fed him, & then fed Frances. Michael is a handful when he's awake, he's always bouncing about in his cot & reaching out for things & tying himself in knots with the strap. He's so enormous to hold after wee Frances, too. It won't be so very long before she's that size! Poor kiddie, its half past three & she's still awake & whimpering. Blast all well-meaning & interfering strangers!
[page break]
You are a blighter for pinching my envelope economies! Would you send half back to me, I can't get any in Aber., & have so many nice envelopes to use up. Mrs Williams was suitably gushing over Frances yesterday. Mrs Sandford can't bear her apparently, she's not by any means gushing herself, tho' none the less kindly. As you remember, there's a small post office next door kept by an ancient dodderer, & when I went in the other day to pay cheques of £10 & £5 into Frances & my P.O. books & also buy £30 of Nat. Saving Certs the old boy was quite thrown off his rocker. He hadn't enough savings certs in the place, so I said it didn't matter, I would do it in Aber., but as I was leaving he coyly asked if I would not mind waiting a few days & he would get sufficient Saving Certs for my princely needs, & it would be a nice bit of business for his P.O. So of course I did. He's quite the slowest P.O. assistant I've ever come across, a dear old boy.
Please return Grindlays letter with or without your instructions & I'll keep it for future reference in case of need. I hope you'll write again soon about what I'm to do when I leave here. The more I think of it the more I realise that it doesn't matter much where I am so long as I have facilities & peace to look after Frances. Keeping body & soul together is the most one can hope for till this bloody war is over. All my love, & snap to it with that navigation or else. . . Ursula

My dear Douglas.
We have just finished lunch & now Dad & I are sitting beside a lovely fire with another young gentleman guest from London, listening to the wireless. And writing this just reminds me of your suggestion that we try to send a message to you by Sandy Macpherson. We had not heard of him until Peggy came to stay with us. She had the wireless on all day long & that was how we heard the programmes to the forces & the messages sent to the boys by their relations. We did think of asking for a message to be sent to you but thought you might [inserted] not [/inserted] like the publicity. So probably by the time you get this you may have heard that Dad & I are all right & thinking of you all the time “a brown bird[?] singing”, is still my favourite record & its message to you would be only too obvious – all through the night my lonely heart is waiting - & as you said in your very last letter to reach us the waiting will probably make the reunion even more joyful.
I hope by the time you get
[page break]
this we shall have definite news of a house of our own which we hope to let you have by cable [deleted one word] [inserted] not the house but the cable [/inserted] You know I’m trying to write to you & listen to a funny man on the wireless. He is one of the silly ones who laugh at their own jokes. I wonder if you are allowed to hear any of the programmes to the Forces. We always think of you as we are listening.
We have had a very severe winter & the ground is covered with snow still, & we have still more showers. But we also have an occasional gleam of lovely Spring sunshine which brings great joy to me.
I have just written to Auntie Una & Uncle. Last Sunday we spent a very happy afternoon with them. Mrs Fenwick is still a lovely[?] old lady at 78. Did I tell you in a previous letter that Mary has broken off her engagement to John. She is spending a lot of time with Roland, & apparently is having a high old time. Naturally Auntie is very anxious. It is a rather unusual household. Now love I’ve to go to [indecipherable word] for a day or two this week, so may be able to send you news of John from there. So now goodbye once again. With all our love Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
I was saying to Dad yesterday that we have been longer without news of you than ever since you went away. Your last letter was dated November 29th so it is well over 3 months since it was written. During that time we have passed through a very severe winter. I have often thought & said it was much worse than last year but could not get any one to agree. This a.m. however one of the guests read out aloud that this has been the most severe winter since 1917 so I feel that I do know something about weather conditions now. Heavy rains have cleared most of the snow away, but this morning is wet & showery again – a real March day. We have wondered all the long time how you have fared. Miss Morton wrote that she’d read of snow in Tunisia which must have come as a great surprise to you all.
I told you in a previous letter that we sold the B.S.A. The day [inserted] before [/inserted] we came away, then a few days ago a letter from Mrs Clayton said that John
[page break]
wanted to buy it. Did I tell you that the man from King’s said what improvements will be made in the machines after the war. He says the boys will scarcely recognize them as motor cycles – there will be so many refinements.
Tomorrow I am intending to return to Kersal for a few days. We are so unsettled & I must try & do something to get a quieter mind, especially as the home is still just as we left it & the demand for houses is quite good I intend to sleep at Mrs Clayton’s & do hope it will be mild warm weather. Have I told you that we had enquires about our house from the Jewish lady at No 8. Her father-in-law would take it either furnished or unfurnished. Our worst trouble is getting a house here – the demand is very great & I don’t want to settle here entirely. Our living all the time for when “We’ll meet again some sunny day.” Now love that is all for today. Always when I’ve sealed my letter I remember something else to tell you. Until the next one. “Keep a stout heart”. as you said in your last letter to us & all our love is with you. Mother & Dad.

Good Friday April 11th/41.
Mr dear Douglas.
Another holiday season is here & as usual my thoughts are with you all the time. You, no doubt will be recalling last Easter, which brought us such a happy surprise, by your unexpected visit. It was Easter, was it not, when you arrived at 2-30a.m. & how we just loved every moment of those brief holidays! Today Dad & I have been wondering around in search of a house. We have been told of one at Colne & are going to look at it, if all’s well, in the morning.
The shortage of house here is very acute & when I enquired at the Corporation Housing Office yesterday was told that there was a waiting list of 1,100. At present we are paying 35/- a week for this tiny house. It is really absurd, but we just cannot do anything better for the moment. Dad went to Salford a fortnight ago & arranged to collect your allotment at Nelson & has done so today & things are in order. In your last letter, Jan 10th., you said you had asked the American Consul to try to arrange for an increased allotment. The Air Ministry notified Dad that the increased amount would
[page break]
be paid from Jan. 23rd. & the [inserted] full [/inserted] amount is [inserted] now [/inserted] 35/- weekly. That is as you wish it to be, I suppose. We are very grateful indeed for the great kindness of the American Consul. His kindly offices have bought great happiness to us here. We were delighted to have the message from him that you had got the cable on Feb. 5th. These messages seem to take about 6 weeks to reach us. & we do appreciate them very much. Now a story about your B.S.A., which King’s collected the night before we came here. A few days later John came home on short visit & said he was going to buy Doug’s bike. His mother told him that King’s had bought it so he went straight away to try to buy it from them & was told it was already sold. Do we believe the
yarn? Do we?
This day has been anything but good so far as the weather is concerned – very cold & wet & we’ve thought of you so much & hoped you were able to enjoy the very pleasant weather mentioned in your last letter. I suppose you will be having very hot weather very soon now. This spring in the [indecipherable word] has been one of the worst for many years with a great amount of rain & very cold. Even now the buds are only just peeping on very many trees & shrubs. Well love I am going to try sending this letter Air Mail again, the one posted on Wed. only cost 4d. but the one posted by Mrs Fletcher whilst I was ill at Cranford cost 1/3. We are rather puzzled but hope you will get the letters all right. Good night & all love to you from
Mother & Dad.

Easter Monday. 14/4/41.
My dear Douglas.
This little holiday is almost over & I’ve been thinking of you so much & hoping you were able to be happy. I imagine that you will now be leaving real summer weather & I know how you will recall the different kinds of Easter weather we have enjoyed, or grumbled at, together. Do you remember our first journey, over the beloved pass, in the Riley? The wonder & the surprise of it! Surely the memory will always remain. Then 3 years ago you remember how you got the stone to make the rockery & the happy time Dad & I had in making it & you & John so happy at Church House Inn. The lovely weather, too, that helped so much. This must have been a stay-at-home Easter for most people, not only on account of war-time conditions, but the weather has been truly wretched. Rain! Rain! & more rain! Tho’ fortunately it is warmer now, & green buds are peeping here & there. I wonder if you have Springtime, like ours in England. I imagine your more luxurious vegetation may lack the daintiness & delicacy of our Springtime glory.
[page break]
Well love I’m wondering if I’ve said anything to you before about the chocolate you asked for. We are not able to get it in any quantity, but I wrote to the Red Cross last week asking if they could help me to get some for you & will let you know the result as soon as possible. No doubt you know that there are very very many things which we are not allowed to send, including tobacco, cigarettes, & food of any kind except slab chocolate. That is why we have not sent a parcel. We should be really puzzled what to send. But you know that you have only to express a wish & we will try to fulfil it. In about 5 weeks time it will be your birthday & so as to be sure of being in time with our wishes Dad & I send all the love, & all the kindest thoughts of you & for you. Many much happier returns of a birthday, happy as possible under the circumstances. It means so much to us to be able to be in touch with you & give you greetings. Dad has had a real rest during the weekend. We’ve sat reading for hours & tho’ times are not normal we are not by any means starving & tonight, for dinner, we’ve had your favourite pudding just as a special treat. Are you able to make it for yourself, I wonder. You used to say you spent some time cooking but you’ve not mentioned it lately. Your last letter was dated January 10th. All love to you from Mother & Dad.
