Dear Douglas,

I am very delighted to know you are alive and safe meantime. From your mother’s letter you seem to be very
[page break]
Well in health and otherwise I was very sorry for your mother and father but they are both in better spirits now. I hope you will excuse me being so long in writing to you. I thought maybe I would get a letter from you first. Beamar is just the same billets for the R.A.F. boys there is a course finished just now they left here Saturday for some where. So I have no one meantime. Mr Danks left 10 months ago I miss him very much but he had to go his business had a call on him. So I have no one in his place. The Greens are still here they have a little baby Girl now. I suppose you will never have had any word of Robert at all. I had one of the lads visiting me one who was before you he is well in the midst of things he was on 7 days leave.
You will be missing all the cold weather snow and ice and frost and rain. It will be quite summer where you are. I suppose it will be Christmas and New Year with you all the same. I would have sent you some little thing but wont know what to send or do but when you write you might please let me know if I can send you anything I will be only too pleased to do it.
[page break]
You remember Janie. She was awfully sorry to know you were reported missing, but quite pleased now to know your safe. Well Douglas I dont think I can say much more I know you wont have much time for writing but whenever you can I will be so pleased to have a note from you. Trusting you are in good health and spirits wishing you all the best of the season. Love and all good wishes from [underlined] J.B. Morton [/underlined]

New Year’s Day 1941.
My dear Douglas.
Two weeks ago today we received your letter dated Oct. 10th. & now I am looking eagerly forward to my next letter. It looks as tho’ one of your letters has not got through to me, as I have only had four to date, & I think you have sent five. This has been a bright frosty winter’s day & I am wondering if you are still enjoying nice warm weather. Well, love, I never seem to have much of interest to tell you – just that we keep jogging along, always hoping, praying, & longing for the end of the dreadful war. Mrs Clayton arrived yesterday at 1 p.m. Can’t imagine why ever she came at that silly time unless it was to attempt to satisfy her almost insatiable curiosity. She left at 2-30, & as soon as she had gone Mrs Kay came in & we had a good old chatter. She is very good company – tho’ we do not always see eye to eye by any means - & I always love to have a talk to her. I met Mrs Brown from Moor Lane, today & asked about her husband who is now a barrage balloon man & not liking being away from home. Mr Ferher has taken a course of training in engineering & is now engaged in a reserved occupation whilst Mrs
[page break]
Ferher carries on the business. Which just shows doesn’t it? The tenant of No 12 is a very busy person & I’ve not been able to speak to her for ages. At present she has a very bad cough which somewhat disturbs our slumbers. But we do feel very sorry to hear her hacking away. Her chow has made another way through into our garden & as it is developing a very uncertain temper we are not too pleased about it. No doubt something will have to be done. Very soon now I hope you will get my first letter to you in El Kef written the day we had your first letter on Nov. 6th. We have been so troubled that we were not able to get in touch with you sooner & was very relieved to learn from your last letter that you quite understood what a long time it would take for an exchange of letters. Almost 6 months isn’t it? And we just keep on thinking about you always. I am always very thankful for such lovely memories. Did I tell you I had such a nice letter from Mrs Baggaley at Christmas. It was a very happy surprise & gave me a lot of pleasure. This morning a very kind letter from E.W.F. You probably realize if you are able to listen in to English news that he has had a very busy time lately & we are thankful to know that he is all right. All our love & best wishes for 1941 from Mother & Dad.

70 minutes formation flying in 6405 with Hodge in 6399. Tightest Formation flying so far. We dived over St Albans & then finally, over base. Recovered my confidence to a great extent. Evening, saw ‘The Baroness & the Butterfly’ in company with Pereira, Hodge, Smith, Crouchen & Orton. Wm Powell starred in the film.

At 6 am told everything off. Taxied 6399 across to ‘W’ Flight at 7.30. At other side, when swinging a/c around, rear nav-light struck heap of tarred road material. Took a/c back to no. 2 hangar. Did some formation flying with Millet in the afternoon.

Day off but detailed for Sibson for night flying. Flew there with Sgt Millar and Sgt Grain. Mist came down once I had done one circuit. Went out to Elton, a nearby village; not to the Haycock as we usually do. Got back about 11pm. Still misty. Slept reasonably warmly under 6 damp, mud-caked blankets. Up at

Within half an hour of landing from Sibson, was sent off on no.5 cross-country with Pereira. Landed 3pm. Shower and shave. Detailed for night-flying. At 8pm did 3 circuits dual, then told to go solo. Suspense was increased by the aircraft having to have a fresh battery fitted. made a botch of my first approach, finishing up at 300’ at right angles, for God’s sake, to the runway. Didn’t panic. Made a second circuit and a good landing.
