Dearest Jessie,
Thank you for your nine pages today I think that breaks all records.
I have posted a letter tonight with 30/- in and postscript to say I have passed this exam. I do not know the figures yet but will finish this tomorrow when perhaps I shall. Out of the 57 in our squad 8 failed on this exam and as there is another in six weeks I suppose several will then but I keep trying hard and as I hope to be home before then for a leave I shall return to it like a new man. You are going to be very smart for my return arent [sic] you my dear. I shall be proud to take you out.
Sorry to hear that Milly has got a
[page break]
cough. Tell her all the news Sunday and ask her to write me a line.
I had a letter from Dick today and he has told me about Webster. Rotten luck isn’t it [sic]. I remember him quite well and feel deeply for his wife and children. St Athans seems to have struck a bad patch.
The cutting you said you enclosed is not here although I can well imagine how he looks. It seems to me that the observers do all the work and the pilots get all the praise.
Is Pamela alright again now. I hope she is not sickening for an illness and that it is only her teeth. Tom seems to be getting about a bit and if Joyce comes back just explain about the cash and she will make it right with you. Xxxx
Will write some more tomorrow.
[page break]
Saturday afternoon.
So you have been to Milly’s after all I hope you enjoyed yourself. The weather has been wonderful here today. Not a cloud in the sky and the sun is very warm. It makes me feel that Spring is on the way and today being the first of March makes me realise that I shall soon be home. Just think dear at the end of this month we shall be cuddling up together holding each other so tight for hours and hours. If it appears that you will be crowded Easter why not ask Joyce to go to Toms [sic] home for my leave and I shall not want you to have any work to do so that I can be with you the whole time.
I have not heard any more other than I have passed my exam and I
[page break]
hope I justify your confidence in me by getting 80%. One of the failures was one of the boys at Redbrae although you dont [sic] know him I will point him out in pictures when I come home. He has taken his discharge and will be home in about a fortnight the alternative being a W.O.A.G. at 2/- a day.
I am just going to get ready to go to Ayr to get haircut and a frame for your portrait. I am keeping the big one in our sitting room and the postcard in my bedroom. The boys like it immensely. I should love to know what you were thinking when you sitting [sic] for it. See if you can remember.
Give my love to Mum and Pamela and Owen and thank her for writing Pams [sic] letter.
My fondest love for you dear.

Dear Jessie,
I had hoped to be able to let you know how I stand in my exam but the results have not come through yet so I will post this tomorrow night and slip the result in if its [sic] ready.
Rather nice for you having company this weekend and I suppose that was why I had no letter the early part of the week. I was disappointed but you have been good so I must not be selfish. Glad you like the photoes [sic] and I will try to send you the negatives and then you can have what you want done. You were right about [smudged] Donald [/smudged] he was one of the hosts to tea at Bexhill.
Have a good talk with
[page break]
Milly about cash because its [sic] no use wearing out the home for nothing as when the war in over we shall not perhaps be able to refit the home.
On Thursday I will send you the Abbey Road 7/3 and the extra 4/- for the fortnight. Thank Gwennie for writing for Pamela and tell her I loved her little letter.
I wonder how Frank will like the Army life? Any service life away from your wife is pretty grim but he will get used to it. How’s your Mum & Vera these days keeping well I hope. I must save a bit of room for my results so goodnight my love and roll round Easter. Love to all.
Harry xxxx
P.S. Thursday evening.
Passed O.K.

Dear Jessie,
I’ve some news for you of my results. Only two of the subjects Met and Maps and Charts. For Met [sic] I got 26 out of 40 and for Maps and Charts 33, giving me a percentage up to now of 74%. If I can keep that up in the other papers all will be well. My marks for Met were rather dissapointing [sic] though that was done towards the end of the paper when time my [sic] was getting short and I was not able to put all I could in the answers.
We had rather an alarming experience this morning when just after taking off in the Fokker one of the engines cut
[page break]
out as we were taking off. The plane managed to get off the deck but could not climb and only managed to get about 500’ and we immediately prepared to land [deleted] of [/deleted] again. The pilot circled around and [smudged] glided [/smudged] down and for some reason could manage to bring the machine in and had to open up [deleted] ther [/deleted] the three good engines and climb away. After circling around again he had another try and this time succeeded in making a very bumpy landing. That ended our flying for today and we spent the morning checking up our log books and the afternoon plotting. The chief instructor gave us a few words in our exam plotting and it appeared that about
[page break]
three quarters of us forgot to apply deviation for the aircrafts head when taking bearings which provided some consolation for me.
The latest news about leave is that we shall get a few days for Easter and that our monthly week end [sic] has been postponed until March 16th. As I expect Easter will be longer than a weekend and you can begin to expect me home for Good Friday morning with probably until [deleted] Sunday night [/deleted] Monday night. Get yourself fit and well for the occasion my love.
On Saturday evening I went into Ayr and saw “Ruler of the Sea” an [deleted] d [/deleted] entertaining film of the first Atlantic crossing by steam. Will Fyffe played a very good part as the engineer and Douglas Fairbanks Junior and Margaret Lockwood put in quite a good show in a story which being about engines
[page break]
I found particularly interesting.
Last night I saw a show put on by the Ayrshire Film Society which contained a film by Germans [deleted] aib [/deleted] about Vienna. If its [sic] in Southend you should see it “Maskerade [sic] in Vienna” its [sic] called. With it was an Eskimo film which showed amazing seamanship as these Eskimos paddled around in there [sic] kayaks.
Well darling I cant [sic] find any more to say tonight and I am going to have an early night for a change. Goodnight my love and God bless you all. My fondest love to you and Pam.

My dearest Jessie,
Thank you [underlined] very much [/underlined] for your daily letter this week, they have been a great comfort to me through a very hard week. This morning we sat for our photo + reco exam and apart from the maths the mid term [sic] exam is over. When I reached home your portrait had arrived and darling I think it is wonderful and far away the best you have ever had taken. I [deleted] strod [/deleted] stood and gazed at [inserted] it [/inserted] for a long time and even now I keep having a peep at you. You look so pretty and it makes me long to have you in my

arms and keep kissing you and hold you close to me. Just another month and all my dreams will come true and we shall have a few happy hours together again. Just looking at your picture revives a thousand memories turns me to hopes of the day when I can afford to have you and Pamela living near my station.
The exam was a step in that direction but I shall have to wait a few days to hear the results. It was quite a stiff test and the three hour paper yesterday morning left me with no time to spare. The general feeling was that there was too much to do in the time and although I was able to complete it several fellows has to leave the last portion unfinished. I feel I did fairly well and I did know all that was

asked but how I expressed myself is a different matter. In the afternoon we had a two hour plotting paper and I had hoped to get a hundred per cent at that but when I talked it over with the boys I found I had made a piddling error in not taking the deviation of the aircrafts [sic] head. Instead I had taking [sic] it off the bearings a thing we have been warned about time and again. How are the mighty fallen. Plotting I thought was my strong point and in many exercises in the class I have always remembered about that deviation and always made a really good show of my work then yesterday of all days I make a slip
[page break]

in this mornings [sic] exam I think I have made a good show and am [deleted] f [/deleted] hoping that the results all average me over 60%.
I managed to get in another four hours flying on Thursday and went down to Annan in the morning. The flight took us over some of the wildest country I have seen and it made navigation rather difficult but withal that the exercise proved very satisfactory and we arrived slap over Annan right on our E.T.A. In the afternoon we set off for West Freugh but had to turn back because just past Maybole it became violently rough and the Fokker was tossed about like a piece of paper in the air and with those menacing

rolling [sic] away underneath us it was rather disturbing. The trouble in flying in this hilly county is that once you lose height you never know when one of these hills may get in your way. Some of the pupils became greener and greener as we were being tossed about [sic] A few were sick and I was proud of the fact that I was able to keep the cat down. I have now done 24/ [sic] hours up hear [sic] and 23 at Rochford and I'm feeling a real veteran.
[deleted] I [/deleted] Pamela is lucky to find a little pal in Rosalie and it will do her a world of good to have a youngster to play with at times. Nice for you and Gladys too, especially if they can amuse themselves while you have a chat over a cup of tea. I bet you find plenty to
[page break]
to [sic] talk over what with your children and your husbands and bungalows and the R.A.F.
Aunt Nellie wrote me a long letter in the week saying they has all been ill but are now better but as there is a lot in it I have enclosed the letter so you and Mum can read it
Mr Chamberlain is speaking on the radio and he is impressive in his confidence of victory. Darling the sooner the better and home again for your lonely airman.
Thanks again dear for my picture and all my love to you and Pamela and Mum
Your ever loving
Harry xxxx

Dear Jessie,
Excuse these few lines dashed off in pencil but I am in the throes of some photography calculations and thought I would write this while my brain cooled off. Thank you for your long letter today and please thank Mum for hers. Tell her that after this exam I will write to her. Would you ask her to ask Joyce if they got my letter that I wrote to them a few weeks ago.
I am sorry to hear you are finding things a bit hard but I am
[page break]
sure that the authorities would do nothing about it as the case you sent up on that slip of paper is for a soldier not in receipt of Family Allowance and having a mother he was supporting in civil life and gets nothing for now. As soldiers and serving men go we are well off and if you must have some more brass I must send it to you out of money I was trying to save for coming home. I could manage you 5/- a week dear so let me know if you must have it. Dont [sic] on any account go short as I can get a Railway Free Warrant for Easter or next leave.
You know the laundry lost
[page break]
a collar for me at Bexhill well at long last I have been able to get two new ones and so I shall be able to have two clean ones a week now.
Mondays [sic] flying was pretty awful and several were sick although I was OK myself. In the hills between Prestwick and Stranraer it was terribly bumpy and [inserted] the plane [/inserted] kept dropping down in big holes that made you feel as if your stomach was falling out of your bottom. At one time we could see the tops of hills on each side [underlined] above [/underlined] us and with the low cloud [deleted] out [/deleted] about it was quite alarming and for mile after mile nothing but bleak snow
[page break]
covered hills without a [deleted] trea [/deleted] tree [corrected] or [/corrected] a house or any living thing. Eventualy [sic] we had to turn back and do some reco over Mauchline. In all I did four hours and a half and was tired out by the end of the day. Enclosed are some of the pictures we took the other Sunday. Not bad are they How do you like my portrait? Looks as if [deleted] are [deleted] I am enjoying myself doesnt [sic] it
Time I got on with my work dear so goodnight my love
Lots of love

Dear Jessie,
Thank you darling for my scarf which I received with a letter and Standard yesterday. Its [sic] a lovely thing and when I am flying in Ansons I shall be able to use it. That wont [sic] be very long dear as I am doing quite a lot of Fokker flying.
On Thursday I had two hours in the afternoon doing a wind finding exercise and on Friday a Nav 3. Nav 3 was a three legged [sic] course and a reconnaissance over Cumnock and Maybole. The reco was very interesting and is a job I think I will like.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
We came down to about 4000' and circled around Cumnock. At first everything seemed quiet in the town but then I noticed a goods train and made a report on it like this. CUMNOCK RAILWAY STATION goods train facing N.W. At Maybole the only thing to report was train with 20 goods trucks ½ mile out MAYBOLE STATION moving EAST. I shall be flying all day Monday so my hours will soon mount up.
Theres [sic] a Blenheim Squadron here doing a lot of flying and one of the gunners is a Southend VR. I do not know who he is but he made enquiries off some of the chaps in my course if there were any Southend chaps here and
[page break]

they told him I was the only one. He knew my name and that I was related to Tom and I am hoping to come across him we shall have plenty in common. It gives you a real thrill to meet anybody from home and yesterday when I bought your jumper I was talking to the assistant and the proprietress who was in the department upstairs came down and said she had heard English voices in the shop and that she had come from Croydon [deleted] 6 [/deleted] six years ago. Well in the course of our conversation it came out that she had lived in Westcliff for some years. That calls for the small world comment doesn't it.
[page break]
4
I hope you like your jumper and if I [deleted] remb [/deleted] remember right I finally chose one with a neck like the News of the World picture. It seems a warm one and I think the colour will match the skirt but if you dont [sic] like it just send it back and I will get it changed Pamela's tam o'shanter is in the box and ten Tenners which you and Mum can smoke between you.
The long dreaded Mid Term exam will be held definitely on Friday and Saturday. The [corrected] maths [/corrected] paper depends on the R.A.F. Central Examination Board so I do not know when that will arrive. Those who fail the Mid Term are suspended from further training and eventually become A.C.s to spend the rest of the war pushing planes out
[page break]
[underlined] 5 [/underlined]
and doing general duties. Not so thrilling but considerably safer. It makes me wonder what makes us try so hard when probably we shall get a bullet up our backsides for all our trouble. It must be the ignominy of failure for most of us and for me the added fact that the rank and pay will enable me to keep you and Pam free from money and food troubles. If I was an A.C. you would only get 29/- and I would not be able to send you any out of my seven shillings. I feel I know all we have been taught and if only I can convey it into words I shall get through. The [corrected] results [/corrected] will be through by Wednesday week so I
[page break]
I shall not have long to wait to hear how things stand. Think of me darling Friday and Saturday and thought of you will give me added strength.
The lad who went home on a fortnights [sic] sick leave Wednesday received a telegram on Friday to report Monday morning poor devil payed [sic] 55/- on fare and then had to come straight back
We still know [corrected] nothing [/corrected] definite about Easter leave but I intend to do something for the 9 [underlined] th [/underlined] March if we dont [sic] get our leave. If I miss a letter this week you will understand wont [sic] dear as I must put all my time in swatting. [sic] Give my love to Mum from
Your ever loving [sic] husband

Dear Jessie,
Although I shall not post this until Thursday evening I am writing it tonight (Wednesday) so that I can go to the Post Office after pay parade tomorrow and send it off with your P.O.
You remember the boy at my billet who had gone to hospital with German measles well he came back today discharged from hospital and has got a fortnights [sic] sick leave and has left to night [sic] for Bristol his home. I told him I would have swapped with him if I had known he would have fourteen days [sic] leave. I think you have to have something infectious
[page break]
before you are sent home. So perhaps its [sic] not worth it.
Dont [sic] you think my letter last night was quite long I shall [deleted] mange [/deleted] [inserted] not [/inserted] manage so much this time as I must get to bed earlier tonight. For the last week I have not been to bed before midnight and I'm getting rather tired and as I am flying all day tomorrow I must be a bit fresher. Flying is very tiring and you have to have all your wits about you as you can well imagine.
Today has been a wonderful spring like day and the sun has been quite warm and we were able to leave our greatcoats off during the dinner hour. We have had WT, Reco, D.R.,
[page break]
and Maps and Charts. In W.T. we were lectured on the Bellini Tosi system of direction finding and I found it very interesting. When we have time to talk together you must get me going on some of these things they are most interesting and put simply quite understandable.
I am afraid you will think this epistle failing in length and style but I feel absolutely barren of ideas and I think that if I was home I should just sit around the fire with you and relax. You know, and have experienced those times when we have just sat quiet and been quite happy knowing we were together, and not expecting either to entertain.
[page break]
Some of the Bexhill boys have gone to Blackpool could you let me know if Dick and Alf went? They seem very comfortable there and are twenty minutes [sic] train ride from the town so I expect they are out towards Fleetwood. Remember the kippers we brought home from our honeymoon. What times we have had together and shall still have if alls [sic] well. We've another honeymoon due very shortly dear so keep smiling and until then lots of love from your distant husband.

Dear Jessie
Thank you for yesterdays Standard and your letter you finished Sunday night. Its much easier to follow up letters now they are arriving sooner and when you mentioned listening to [indecipherable word] Book for 1930 it was nice to remember that I did the same. Not bad was it. I enjoyed the pieces from King of Jazz especially "Dawn is Breaking".
From your cuttings of the News of the World it would appear as if tartan skirts are the thing and I will see if the jumpers can [missing word] bought like that up here.
I have enclosed a picture taken during the snow and will forward the Sunday snaps as soon as developed.
[page break]
You will be getting quite an album of my wartime activities. They will do to show the children in later years dear.
The long awaited exam did not appear on Monday and I think it will be taken in the Mid Term that is Thursday week. There is some talk of the course being extended to 20 weeks but I have not heard anything official. Instead of an exam we had a whole days flying. It was terribly bumpy in the Fokker and we ran into snowstorms which made it terribly cold. The machine is too big to bump in the usual way and just rolls the whole time and chap next to me became greener and greener until he finally grasped a paper bag provided and sicked his heart up. This proved to [sic] much for me and made me reach [sic] two or three times but I was not sick. We were up for two hours in the morning and as
[page break]
3
we were sitting right at the back where the rolling is worst the chap could hardly be blamed. After a dinner of soup, mutton and beans and bread and butter pudding I had to go up again for two hours but this time sat in the same place but with a different person and was quite alright. The morning flight was a map reading exercise which was rather dull but in the afternoon we did wind finding by pin pointing which was much more interesting. Today we have been at the Mill doing Photography Maths Magnetism and Met. Tuesday and Wednesday is comprised of taking notes all day and partly explains my awful writing. We have to write so quick [sic] that ones hand gets worse and worse.
There is a Blenheim Squadron here
[page break]
4
that arrived yesterday [deleted] here [/deleted] for night flying training. My word they can move and have been scudding round the aerodrome all day. Im looking forward to when I've finished all this studying and am posted to a Squadron.
Sorry to hear Pamela is not quite up to the mark but hope the teeth will soon be right and that she does not make you too much washing. How I would love to see you in your new dress I bet you look beutiful [sic]. You must turn out pretty smart these days. It seems we have both had a new rig out this winter, though I did get a new overcoat even [inserted] if [/inserted] it was R.A.F blue
Pamela must be getting quite conversational these days and I feel much happier for having her because it gives you something to live for, and a duty for you to discharge. Having something to do is
[page break]
5
the only preventative for boredom and I think you would be feeling rather fed up without her. Also she is a part of me I have left with you so make her into a nice girl that I shall be proud of.
Thursday is pay day so I will send off your Pound then and will send a P.O. for it. At the moment I have 2 1/2d so pay parade will be very welcome though I get two shillings a fortnight less here. It goes down to my account but still I cant spend that. I want to go carefully this next month so that we can have a day or two together very soon. Will you be O.K for the 9th of March or did things go wrong the last time. Did I tell you I had written to Aunt Nellie and Joyce last Sunday week although I have not had a reply. Has Stan cleaned my byke [sic] yet?
I am enclosing some of my test papers that we have to do they
[page break]
might interest you but you must not leave them about as I should get into trouble if word got back.
We are going to be medically examined soon. A proper one blowing up mercury and holding breath and all the performance I had at Palmeria Towers again so I may even be sent home yet.
I have just drunk my evening cocoa and think of you having your supper and wish I were with you, still [deleted] I [/deleted] I shall be soon again so goodnight my dear all my love to you both. Thank Agnes and Gwen for their letters and give them my love.
heaps of love

P.S. Give Mum a kiss for me.

Dear Jessie,
This is the close of my first days leave and its [sic] been a grand day. I got up at quarter past eight and washed and shaved and got down to [deleted] ber [/deleted] breakfast at half past. A lovely letter from you opened a jolly day and eleven o'clock saw us on the train bound for Glasgow just like four schoolboys on a day out. Between Prestwick and Glasgow there was a great deal of snow and at Johnstone men were clearing snow of [sic] the streets with ice picks. After about an hours [sic] journey we arrived at St. Enock Station and made our acquaintance with the big city. After getting over the shock of seeing crowds of people and streams of traffic we began to walk up Argyle Street doing quite a bit of shop gazing. There are many big stores and you would have been in your glory.
[page break]
Off Argyle St we went through an arcade and found a good pen shop where I had a new nib fitted in my Conway. From there we wandered on and got off the main roads somehow and came upon some slums that reminded me of that book "No Mean City" which if you remember was about Glasgow. The houses and tenements were filthy dirty and I had the feeling that any moment we might be set upon. Still we safely navigated this shady portion of the city and got back on to Renfield St. and the big shops. Feeling dry we had a pot of coffee and cake and then carried on with our reconnaissance until half past one when we entered Lewis's. This is a big store on the lines of Selfridges and I bought Pamela a Tam o Shanter which I will post on. We were beginning to feel hungry by then and went up in the lift where the lift girl did a real Claud

Hulbert act you know "Going up cutlery corsets chinaware. Third floor ladies undoware [sic] gents natty suitings" and [deleted] son [/deleted] so on to the fifth floor and the restaurant. A good band was playing and we had a tasty lunch and looking round espied Tonker that is Mr Thomas one of our billet mates and his wife who has come up from Cardiff to stay the week end in Glasgow with him. We went over to there [sic] table and enjoyed a pleasant chat with Mrs Thomas who is a very charming young woman and darling how I envied them. Something must be done about next month if I cannot get home for Easter. We may get five days leave then but they cannot promise but [deleted] mat [/deleted] maybe I shall know for sure by my next week end. The sight of these two has made me long for you more than ever. I do wish you were living up hear [sic] so that I could see you every day and cuddle you every night. Midnight has just struck so Ill [sic] get to bed and write some more tomorrow. . .

Sunday Morning
Continuing my narrative we left Lewis' and walked on to Sauchiehall Street which rather disappointed me. Perhaps because it was Saturday afternoon and the shops were shut whereas in Renfield St and Buchanan Street they were all open and well lit made Sauchiehall St seem quiet and dull. About five of us tried to get in the Pavilion to see Stanelli Charlie Kung and several good artists but were unlucky. There was not a seat available for either show so we had to go to the Regent Cinema.
Two very good pictures were showing Batchelor [sic] Mother and Bad Lands. Batchelor [sic] Mother starred David Niven and Ginger Rogers in an amusing story in which Ginger Rogers is landed with a baby that was left at a foundling home and to keep her job she has to admit that it is her own. The efforts of David Niven to help this supposed unmarried mother are realy [sic] amusing and at it all ends very happily.
[page break]
[deleted] 4 [/deleted] [underlined] 5 [/underlined]
Bad Lands was a western picture above the average in which a sheriff and his posse are ambushed by Indians and killed off one by one until the last man is relieved by a rescue party of soldiers. The story though a bit morbid was well acted and with Batchelor [sic] Mother was a good programme.
As Mr & Mrs Thomas had seen the cinema programme we arranged to meet them later at a restaurant for supper. Our rendeyvous [sic] was Grants which we had seen advertised in the local paper but on coming out of the Regent it was so dark that we walked all down one side of Argyle Street and up the other without finding it and so we gave it up and supped at Sloans. I had a glass of beer, toast, and a fillet of cod and chips and then rounded the meal off with a coffee and cigarette. From there we groped our way back to the station and within an hour we were home, feeling tired but happy and much better for our day off. On getting in I started this letter and wrote until midnight.
Today has been very lazy and apart
[page break]
from washing shaving and eating I have done nothing but write to you and have some photos taken. These I'll send to you as soon as they are printed.
Well darling I think this letter is a pretty good effort and its [sic] four oclock [sic] and I must revise some of my Maths. From your letter I gather that you only get five pairs of knickers for Pam from one of her Nannies. It seems to me Pam must be growing very fast. You can send my scarf on as I can wear it for flying and thanks for the sox [sic] dear they are nice and long; keep my legs warm. Its [sic] good to hear bits of news of the Southend boys so let me know all you hear.
All my love darling to you and Pam
Your loving
Harry xxxxxx

Dearest Jessie
A great surprise awaited me when coming home tonight. Two letters from you They mean a lot to me and the fact that I did not expect one at all made them all the sweeter. The postal service is
improving no end for one of the letters was only posted yesterday.
Im [sic] glad you liked your skirt and dont [sic] forget to let me know what sort of jumper you want. Thanks for getting your portrait done and when you see the proofs choose the best and send me the large one and I will buy a frame. Im [sic] ever so thrilled about it so if its [sic] not quite up to the mark have another sitting.
[page break]
Just had a break in my writing to discuss a graph weve [sic] been doing. Its [sic] very hard to write a decent letter with provocative discussions going on, now they have started on a bomb sight but I am determined to keep writing.
Actually got some flying in today. 2 hours 40 minutes of map reading but it seemed very tame after the Anson flying at Rochford. We all filed into the Fokker about 48 of us and flew around Girvan Ayr Kilmarnock and district. The nearby hills looked very beutiful [sic] with touches of snow on the heather covered slopes and clumps of firs alternately lightened and shaded by the clouded sun. The sea was calm and of pure blue and we passed a destroyer on patrol [deleted] lookl [/deleted] looking grimly grey in the morning sun. The sailors must be grateful for the warm spell that is setting in for
[page break]
they must have had a hard time in all the cold weather we have had. I suppose you can see the lawn again now with all your bulbs coming along and this nice weather makes spring feel very near. I hope it does not encourage any Nazi visitors to your part of the country. Its [sic] time other people learnt what their air raid warnings are for. We never hear one here in fact if we did I think the work would still go on. My head is getting fuller and fuller of terms Mathmatical [sic] and [deleted] prof [/deleted] problems quadratical [sic]. Would you believe it after swatting up all this Trig and logs we are told that the school has heard officially that there will not be any of either in the exam. This is a blow because I could have faced any question in calm and now I suppose we shall have a paper of tricky algebra and equations & some
[page break]
beastly graphs.
Did I tell you we have gargle parades now. We all line up for permanganate of potash water and do our daily gargle. Its [sic] the funniest sight, all the men with their heads back gargling away. The ideas good but rather late as all our throats are better. One of the boys at my billet came out in a rash Monday and on Tuesday went sick and has been taken to the hospital in Ayr with measles. Its [sic] hard luck for the lad as it will put him behind with his work and he will probably have to go into another course when he comes out.
Eleven o'clock has just struck so I must think about going to bed Goodnight my love give my love to all and kiss Pam for me and remember I will alway [sic] love my darling Jessie

Darling Jessie
Your forecast of my results have come true and I have averaged 80%. I feel very pleased with that and hope I continue to do as well in my other exams. Mitchell (that's the one with the moustache in the Victorian Group) and I were the best at Redbrae Donald the lad you met at Bexhill got 66% and is rather disappointed still we have plenty more to learn and know [sic] one knows how we shall finish.
Its [sic] been a wonderful day up here and although there was a very sharp frost this morning the sun warmed up and made things very pleasant. We've had a hard day doing W.T. D.R. and Maps and Charts and as soon as I have finished this I must get down to some Maths, but still its [sic] for a good cause.
[page break]
Yesterday C and D squads of B course had a group photo taken for record purposes and I think we are able to buy reprints so if I can get one I will send it on It should look rather good and not unlike a photo of a [deleted] cricktt [/deleted] cricket club or something. Tomorrow evening I am going to a show in Troon where the management have invited the whole school over two evenings and I am hoping to have an enjoyable night. Its [sic] about time I had an evening out as lately I seem to have had all work and no play.
I had laugh [sic] over the boys here today as on Thursdays we usually have macaroni cheese for tea and as I dont [sic] like it I have [deleted] us [/deleted] always gone without and just had bread and jam and scones, but earlier this week in talking to the cook I said I did not like Thursdays tea and today as well as the other chaps tea in came a big plate of ham and tomatoes for Mr. Redgrave. You should have seen their faces and to make things worse instead of
[page break]
having a dish for seven to share amongst them they only had enough for six.
We takled [sic] the W.O. about Easter leave today but he was non commital [sic] and said it would go up on D R O. as soon as it was decided, that is about 12 days before Easter he said. From the talk we felt that it was pretty sure although any thing [sic] might happen yet. One course are sitting for their finals on Good Friday so they will be unlucky.
I bet Pamela enjoyed her train journey and I remember how we have taken her on many occasions and how excited she has been I hope you found Nelly and Frank pretty fit How is Frank looking forward to military service? Do you know what Tom is doing at Weymouth I think it is a gunnery school and if ever I pass this course I think I shall try and do my armament course there as it is near home and I may be able to get back to see you on a week end.
[page break]
I read about the bomber brought down at Gravesend and wondered whether you saw anything of it. It was a terrible business and a horrible end for the crew. Bad enough to be shot down by the enemy but by your own chaps is unthinkable.
I think thats [sic] all for tonight dear so happy dreams and all my love to you and Pamela.
Harry xxxx
P.S. I will send on P.O. for 4/6 in anticipation of my leave as soon as I get to the Post Office

Darling Jessie,
Thank you a lot for the scarf dear which arrived Monday. Today I received another card from Gwen and one from Agnes and 50 Players. Will you thank her for me and tell [deleted] yo [/deleted] her I will write this week if I can find time from my homework. It seems I messed you up about the scarf but I think Johnnie was right about a plain one although one or two here are wearing the coloured ones. I suggest you finish it wear it yourself it will identify you with the R.A.F. The S. Standard arrived today and did you notice in last weeks [sic]that Ben Warner had died and that one of the Sweetings had died too. Todays [sic] arrival gave me an idea of the weather you have had. You certainly had a bad time though I suppose you have thawed out by now. I hope we have seen the back of the snow for this winter.
All the boys are sitting round our table doing a paper on Maps and Charts and its [sic] most difficult to write a letter with questions being flashed across the table. The troublesome
[page break]
question at the moment is finding nine conspicuous sea marks. One of the lads had just suggested two [deleted] lightau [/deleted] lighthouses and seven buoys but we think the instructor would not like that and so the hunt goes on.
Mondays [sic] flying was cancelled because the field was waterlogged and I think it will be a bad Thursday. That means another days plotting. Im [sic] just about fed up with plotting because whilst we cannot fly we have it from 8 until 5 and by teatime I feel mentally exhausted. You have no idea how tiring it is.
Last night we went into Ayr to see a variety show at the Gaety [sic] Theatre. Every week they give one course free tickets and this week was our turn. It wasnt [sic] a bad show at least it made a chance although it meant missing our one night off. I bet you think I am full of moans but still it does do you good to get it out of your system.
You have probably got your skirt by now and I hope you like it. If you would let me know what colour jumper would go with it I will send one on after next pay day. As I cannot take you out these days I must make it up to you somehow. We have got our first weekend leave from Friday night so on Saturday I shall go to Glasgow for the day just to have a look around. In a months [sic] time I shall have another week-end and have found out that you could travel on a warrant at the same fair [sic]
[page break]
as I could so if the money is available you could get here as cheap as I could get home. Wouldn’t it be lovely if it could be done. [sic] Is it all dream? The fare costs £2.10.
There are some wireless ops training not far from here and there are some from Southend. They have come from N. Weald. I have not met any of them so do not know if there is anybody I know. There are 3 Southend boys in Prestwick who came from Cambridge I.T.W. but they are in another course and I do not know any of them so theres [sic] no one to talk over the old times with. Still they are nice chaps I am with and we have some laughs over our work.
Well ducks its [sic] eleven o’clock and I must think about bed so goodnight my love keep smiling
Always your loving husband

My darling Jessie,
Thank you very much for your card and your something in the post. I have not received that yet [deleted] by [/deleted] but one of the boys has just gone down to the post office so he may bring it back. Well theres [sic] not much to report other than plenty of hard work and nightly bouts of homework. Thursday we were given a paper on Magnetism to do Friday a Maths test paper and today an exam paper on Maps and Charts. All these are to be done in our spare time as test papers to see how we are progressing. Next Monday week we sit our Maths exam that is Feb 12 [underlined] th [/underlined] so I expect all next week our evenings will be spent doing more test papers. If work will get us through the school will see we pass. The result of this exam goes
[page break]
towards the mid-term exam which is in all subjects. In the mid term [sic]results they weed out all those who they think will not get by and suspend them. They have not had a single failure in the finals so the evidently make sure that those who pass the mid term [sic] get through. I have only been out one night this week when I went to the pictures and saw “The Story of Irene and Vernon Castle” which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was showing at the Broadway Cinema which is a very nice place. Seats are cheaper here than Bexhill back stalls being only 9d. [deleted] Mo [/deleted] All the boys are going out tonight so I am taking the chance to get some letter writing done. I went to Ayr this afternoon and had a haircut the first since I have been here. As I am not home to take you out I have sent you a little gift which I hope you will like. It is a tartan skirt and if you don’t think it is quite the thing send it back and I will change it. I went in to buy you a jumper but after seeing about a dozen
[page break]
and not being able to make up my mind I suddenly realised that you have several jumpers and not many skirts so I asked the young lady to show me some and anyhow the results [sic] in the post. Your remarks about a more leisured time made me think you have misunder-stood my letters. I suggest you look up in the dictionary the meaning of leisure and if you can reconcile that with doing maths up till eleven at night I’ll eat my hat. Still as you say things could be a lot worse and a cosy billet means a lot. I wish you could come and help me. [deleted] Remb [/deleted] Remember how we used to recite The Three Course Method in bed. It seems a long time ago doesn’t it Dear. [sic] I’m ever so glad to hear you are getting around. Let me know as soon as you hear anything about Dick or Alf though as far as I know they are still in Bexhill. From what I have heard the whole squadron had to sit for the maths exam and only
[page break]
three passed. The three went to Blackford and the rest have stayed on at Bexhill even those who passed there [sic] first paper. In my last letter I included P.O. for £1-7-3 let me know you have received it safely. Don’t you think I am a good husband [sic] Paid at five o’clock and your money off at half past. Well dear thats [sic] all for tonight I would like to tell you how much I love you but I can only write it. Darling I love you again and again.
Your ever loving husband

My darling Dad.
Thanks for your letter and all your news. Mum is in Hospital as Steve told you, but we had a letter from her this morning saying that on reexamination[sic] she has German Measles not ordinary measles. German measles is not too bad and Mum expects to be back in ten days. So don’t worry at not getting a letter from her. Yesterday I took down some flowers and fruit. Of course I wasn’t allowed to see her as it is infectious.
The Dr. said Mum could remain in the flat but we decided not to risk it, as Steve has his exam in a fortnight and also from the fact that she will get much better attention in a Hospital.
I have sent my name in as an Air Raid Warden (Voluntary). The people at the station are very nice. I expect to start work soon.
[page break]
Yesterday Peter rang up and asked me to Tea. After Tea Peter & his mother & father went to a flick & took me along. They were sorry to hear about Mum. Rosemary, Peter’s sister was in bed with Flu and [indecipherable] the other sister has just got over a painful operation.
In her letter Mum said she was feeling much better & that in a couple of days should be able to manage quite well. It is then that she will benefit from the rest in hospital. I think after she comes out we will insist in her taking a holiday somewhere, as soon as Steve’s exam is over.
The good old British Navy I don’t think the Altmark will get far, even if the Norwegians [deleted] u [/deleted] let her go.
I hope you are getting on well. Don’t worry about Mum as German Measles is very slight. Will let you know how she is getting on.
No more to-day. God bless you.
Love Dave.

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news. I’m sorry to hear you had such bad luck in the Tennis. It is very hard to pick up after being almost sure of the match you start going the other way.
I am still doing nothing. If I can’t land any sort of a paid job soon I shall have no alternative but to join an A.R.P. Station as an unpaid worker. The only trouble is that you are usually out of pocket yourself if you do this. Still I suppose it is better than hanging around doing nothing. Also as at present there seems to be no developement[sic] in the fighting I dare say I shall have my full period of working.
Ian Dawson was in London for a few days. Ian [indecipherable] us hit the high lights or rather attempted to. We had a very enjoyable evening with Helen & Winnie, [indecipherable] with
[page break]
them was an awful flop.
I bought some very neat torches the other day but unfortunately I broke one. I shall probably take it back to the shop tomorrow and see what can be done.
The other night I went to a flick with Peter. “Hell’s Kitchen” – The Dead end kids were in it. It was an [indecipherable] good film. Peter & I were unaccompanied. This is a second day outing and we thoroughly enjoyed it. After the show we had something at the Corner House. At a table near us were a few young men, well pickled and before we left they had cut off their ties from just below the [deleted][indecipherable][/deleted] knot and when we left were trying to persuade the waiter to do the same.
No more to-day. God bless you. With lots
of love & kisses from
your loving son
David.

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letters and all your news. The new Radio set looks a jolly good one. I am sorry to hear you had a touch of malaria. I hope you are perfectly allright [sic] now.
Your quantity this year is very good indeed. I hope the firm have done well the past year. I subsequently discovered that Group I in a driving test signifies the types of vehicles one may drive, and has no connection at all with the standard of driving. A.R.P. work is out of the question. They won’t accept anyone under 25. I am thinking of doing it unpaid, but that means incidental expenses which I shall have to pay. As it is we are spending quite enough.
I am sorry to hear about Mrs Apcaso’s heart. Anyway I hope you have some good sport in the tennis.
[page break]
Ian, who is on a few days leave, phoned yesterday. I had a quick drink with him. We are going to go out a bit in the next few days.
Peter rang yesterday. We had a game of squash. He is amazing. We have played three times now & the scores have been, 5-5, 4-4, [deleted] 5 [/deleted] 4-4. We then had tea at the flat. After tea Peter and I went to a flick. “The Rains Came”. It is an excellent film.
I am glad to hear you have been offered the post of a lodge officer. It is something to keep you occupied. I am glad to hear Marjorie June & the tiny ones are allright [sic]. Give them our love.
The Finns are putting up a Grand fight. I hope they are helped considerably & tan the Russians well. The same goes for Hitler & Co.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
With lots of love & kisses. [symbol]
From your loving son
David.
P.S. We shall have to drop the love & kisses or at least the kisses as we are getting big boys [underlined] now! [/underlined]
