No. 466 Squadron, R.A.A.F.
ROYAL AIR FORCE.
26th December, 1943.
Reference.
466/2050/38/P1.
Dear Mrs Cahir,
Prior to receiving this letter you will have received a telegram from Air Board, Melbourne, informing you that your son, Flight Sergeant Francis Shamus Cahir, has been reported missing from an operational flight on the night of 20th December, 1943.
It is with sincere regret that I am writing this letter to confirm this sad news, and to convey the heartfelt sympathy of all members of the Squadron to you, and to other members of Flight Sergeant Cahir’s family, in your great anxiety.
On the night of 20th December, 1943, the aircraft, in which your son was Air Gunner, took off to carry out a bombing attack on enemy territory. This flight represented one of the many courageous efforts called for from the Royal Air Force in this war, and it was undertaken with efficiency and resolution, for which your son’s crew was noted in the Squadron. Unfortunately the aircraft did not return.
The most searching enquiries through all possible channels have so far revealed nothing, but naturally it will take some time for possible information to reach this country from enemy sources. Meanwhile we can only hope that Flight Sergeant Cahir and the other members of his crew are prisoners of war. If any further news does come through you will, of course, be notified immediately.
A Committee of Officers, called a “Standing Committee of Adjustment”, has gathered together all your son’s personal effects, and will look after them carefully until the end of the war.
Flight Sergeant Cahir is greatly missed by his many friends in the Squadron, where he had always seemed to be happy doing such grand work for our cause. I should like to express my personal sympathy and profound regret that it should fall to my lot to convey to you tidings such as these. I can only hope that the New Year will bring you all more hopeful news.
Yours Sincerely
[signature]
Wing Commander.
Mrs. M. Cahir,
505, Bell Street,
Melbourne,
Victoria, Australia.

No. 550 Squadron,
R.A.F. Station,
North Killingholme,
Nr. Grimsby,
Lincolnshire.
7th December, 1944.
Dear Mr Dennis
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the sad news that your son, Sergeant George Charles Dennis is missing as a result of air operations against the enemy on the night of 6/7th December, 1944. I should like to take this opportunity to offer, on behalf of the Squadron, our deepest sympathy to you in your great anxiety, and we trust you will derive a little comfort in the knowledge that he may be safe and well as a prisoner of war.
Unfortunately, information concerning those who are captured often takes several weeks to reach this Country through the medium of the International Red Cross Society, but you can rest assured that the moment any news is forthcoming, you will be immediately notified.
George has been with the Squadron for a little over six weeks, during which time he has participated in ten operational flights against the enemy, proving himself on each one to be a vigilant and efficient air gunner, and he will, I am sure he will be greatly missed by the many friends he has made since joining the Squadron.
I should like to explain the request contained in my telegram informing you of your son’s misfortune, which was inserted with the object of avoiding his chances of escape being prejudiced by undue publicity in the event of him still being at large. This does not mean to say that any news of him is available, but is a precaution adopted in the case of all persons reported missing.
All George’s personal belongings are being handled by the Station Effects Officer, who will forward them to the Central Committee of Adjustment, R.A.F. Colnbrook, Slough, Bucks., when the Officer in charge of this latter Unit will communicate with you.
Yours Sincerely
[signature]
Squadron Leader,
[underlined] Commanding, No. 550 Squadron. [/underlined]

No.6l Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
SKELLINGTHORPE,
Lincoln, Lincs.
14th August, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Scrimshaw,
It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm the sad news which you will have received by telegram, that your husband, Flight Sergeant C. Scrimshaw, is reported missing with all his crew from air operations on the night of 12/13th August, 1944.
He was detailed to attack Russelsheim on that night, and after the aircraft left this Station nothing more was heard of it, this in itself is not necessarily final as wireless silence has to be maintained on operations to prevent the enemy easily ascertaining the position and intentions of our aircraft. There is therefore, every reasonable chance that your husband and his crew may have escaped by parachute, as so many others have, in which case there should be good news of them. This news usually takes from six weeks to two months to come through, though the International Red Cross do all in their power to hasten news of prisoners-or-war. We must therefore hope and pray that there may soon be good news of your husband and his crew.
Your husband is a highly skilled Air Gunner and this was his twenty sixth operational sortie, all the others having been highly successful. We also valued him as a fine type of N.C.O. His loss is indeed a great blow to the Squadron.
It is desired to explain that the request in the telegram notifying you of the casualty to your husband was included with the object of avoiding his chance of escape being prejudiced by undue publicity, in case he was still at large. This is not to say that any information about him is available but is a precaution adopted in the case of all personnel reported missing. Furthermore, for reasons of security it is regretted that the names and addresses of the next-at-kin of the remainder of the crew cannot yet be divulged.
The deep sympathy of all members of this Squadron is with you in this anxious time of waiting, which we earnestly hope, will soon be happily terminated by good news.
Believe me,
Yours sincerely,
(sgd) A.W. DOUBLEDAY
