‘Allo:
Our state capitol. It doesn’t look very high, but when you’re on top of it, you realize differently. Baton Rouge, as well as most of La. – as I have told you – Was settled by the French – thus the name. Note where its marble came from (above)

My darling!
Your letter came yesterday, but I didn’t get a chance to reply on the same day, so will attempt to do so this morning – if I can squeeze in between my other tasks – enough time to write.
The news I have isn’t so warm. In fact it is rather bad …. I checked with Air Force regulations; also with State of New York regulations and I have been informed that TRANATLANTIC MARRIAGES ARE NOT RECOGNIZED OR CONDONED. If I were out, I could go to a state where this practice is recognized, but its no dice. Only now, after I have had this other obstacle flaunted in my face, am I really getting burned up. But they don’t know me very well if they think I am giving up that easily ….
Darling, you see what you can do about the suggestion you had – flying to Ontario … and I’ll guarantee you that I’ll be there if I have to take French leave – I think you call it. I think I can get approved leave though – I’m sure I can – for an emergency like this.
Meanwhile – I am going to put $50 or $75 in savings deposit every month from now on – I have – should say HAD some ready cash, but my sister’s store was struck by lightning, and completely destroyed – stock and all. She built again, as she has a good business (she is a widow) and she needed dough, so I invested in her property. It won’t pay off for quite a while, but I can list it as interest in property. I’ve got to get $500 saved, in the next few months, because that [underlined] is [/underlined] required, BEFORE I CAN FILL OUT ANY FORMS. It’s the deportation fee, in case I don’t accept you. Fat chance that I wouldn’t want you after you got here, but the government makes No exceptions. They can’t realize [deleted] h [/deleted] that I love you and that I wouldn’t be asking you to come over if I didn’t want you to be here. Well, that’s the way things stack up – Dammit, pardon the expression, but it burns me up.
So, Cathie dearest, if there is anything you can do to speed up the reunion, by all means take it …. Anything …. nearly ….. I even have lost my fear of you flying over …. Even though there are air accidents, WHICH ARE PUBLICIZED MUCH MORE THAN ANY OTHER FORM, there are a hundred times as many auto accidents. I flew the ocean in an old knocked out B-24 Liberator. It wasn’t too bad. And with the modern airliners, it should be a cinch.
Not much going on right now, except routine stuff ….. they’re trying to reinstall The Beacon, which will mean more work for me. I have become reconciled to it’s suspension, but I’d dislike to see it resumed, only to fold again, because it doesn’t receive the proper support.
Your letters also make my spirits soar about 500 percent, and when I receive an epistle from you, I am happy the entire day. I read and reread them, getting more from them with each reading. I hope that the pix [sic] you promised me are on the way. I can hardly wait to receive a large photo of you. Tinted, I hope, acceptable if it isn’t I hasten to add.
Navy Day I went to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and was taken on an escorted tour of the USS Missouri, the battleship on which the Japs signed the peace declaration. It is a mammoth craft, and [deleted] the [/deleted] is a maze of ladders, doorways and bulkheads ….. I wouldn’t want to be stationed aboard one of those babies, because the sleeping quarters are nothing short of lousy. Four men sleeping in bunks
[page break]
one above the other. And the brig! No seats, no beds, nothing. When a guy is thrown in the gaol, he sleeps on the hard deck, isn’t allowed to [deleted] a [/deleted] talk with anybody, and often they are placed on rations of bread and water. At least in the Air Force we give our prisoners a proper place to sleep, they talk with all the other inmates, and they are allowed to see movies every night ….. The Navy tradition of cruelty must date back to the days when there were galley slaves, torture and pirates. I always thought that we had a lot of outmoded customs in the Air Force, but ours are nothing compared to the Sea-going brothers.
A quick runaround of what is going on Broadway ….. “Man & Superman” Bernard Shaw’s Classic comedy has been revived on the Great White Way with Maurice Evans starring and is the hit of the decade. The critics did kudos, and bent over backward in their praise, and the public has agreed and now the mad rush is on, to get to the boxoffice. [sic] Judith Anderson, that perennial favorite [sic] Australian actress and your own John Gielgud have produced, and star in “Medea” …. which hasn’t been on the boards since 1902 in New York. Of her (Miss Anderson) the critics said … “she is like a panther, screaming, tearing all over the place, biting scenery, clawing …. Acting a la Bernhardt.” Nothing subtle about her performance, but that was one characteristic the Greeks didn’t know about. It is a smash hit too. This has been a very good season for the stage. Better than the last two when only one or two entries survived. Already “Allegro”, the new Rogers and Hammerstein musical has a million dollar (250,000 pound) advance sale. It’s been opened about three weeks. And tickets are selling for the 2d year. It’s the biggest smash that has touched New York – ever. Cicely Courtnedge, the London favorite [sic] brought over “Under The Counter” – which flopped. She got good reviews but the comedy got very poor ones. “An Inspector Calls”, a London entry by J. B. Priestly, has opened with Thomas Mitchel and has clicked. “Duet [deleted] With [indecipherable word] [/deleted] For 2 Hands” still another London hit, had only three showings here before it failed. “That Winslow Boy”, which, I am told, won all kind of prizes in London opens tomorrow night. Written by Terrance Rattigan, who penned Alfred Lunt’s & Lynn Fontainne’s “Love in Idyleness” [sic] – known over here as O Mistress Mine, which has just closed after the most successful season the Lunts have had – ever. So Broadway, for a while, must have looked like West End.
Uncanny “Finian’s Rainbow”, which didn’t go over so well in London as the beautiful Oklahoma and Annie Get Your Gun, is the smash of last season, and despite new shows, continues to pace the field in established musicals. It [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] is more American, and has situations pertinent only to the Americans, though. What really surprised me was that London didn’t like Margaret Sullavan [sic] in “The Voice of the Turtle”, which is in its 5th year over here, and is the longest-run play now on Broadway, now that Life With Father, after chalking up an eight-year run, has terminated. Margaret S. is a great actress. When I was preparing to go overseas in 1943, the hottest thing on Broadway was Oklahoma! It still enjoys capacity patronage, after all these years, now approaching its fifth year. I wonder if it will run as long in your city. By the way, did you get to see it.
Enough about the theatre. But I wish you would tell me why you left your company …. didn’t you like them … the actors …. producers …. pay …. or what? I would loved to have seen you as Elvira in “Blithe Spirit” …. You know I never saw the play, or the movie, which was made with Rex Harrison. You know Rex is a number 1 star in America now that he has made 3 straight hits. Anna & the King of Siam, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and now “The Foxes of Harrow” … “Harrow” is the story of Creole society and an interloper Mr. Fox (Harrison) in the first part of the 1830’s. New Orleans was a spectacular city of sin then, and attracted scoundrels like honey does a bee. I read the book, which was rich with the idiom of the era, but the picture failed to capture that aura. They seldom do though. James Mason is making quite a few radio appearances over here. Every program is bidding for him and only the lucky gets him.
[page break]
I’ve had a few hectic weeks …. a few days since I began this letter ….. I’ve received another letter from you with the bit of heather (I think) enclosed. It is lovely and I keep looking at it all the time. Last night I went to Smithtown here on Long Island to see Julie Haydon in “Peg o’ My Heart,” the greatest success of the late Laurette Taylor. Although it was summer theatre and was presented 20 miles from New York, the big New York newspapers sent out their top-flight critics to [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] cover it, and the star, who has starred in the “Glass Menagerie” on Broadway and opposite Noel Coward long ago in THE Scoundrel, made a terrific personal success.
Darling the paper is still suspended; but not my work. I’d rather be getting out The Beacon, because in it I can see what I have accomplished, while many of the releases I send out, I never get to see, and I don’t know if they’re printed or not.
Cathie, dearest, when you write me, why don’t you tell me the plays you are appearing in, you tell me you’re acting in a play or that you’ve moved to another town, but I’m a stickler for statistics; I read Variety every week to find out what the grosses are on all the Broadway houses, and all over the country for that matter. So if you’d oblige …. or if you have a program, how about sending some of those along? Please …..
I’m glad you received the stockings, but don’t applaud me for picking out the shade. One pair I bought was the last set in the shop, and the other,,, well I don’t know if I selected them or not, so you see it wasn’t my initiative …. As long as you like them [deleted] th [/deleted] that is all that matters. I tried to get both pair the same color [sic] so if one was ruined you’d have three remaining alike. A girl who works in the headquarters here gave me this [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] hint.
Oh baby, I wish I could see you. They’re trying to pull strings to get me to Germany. A major I work for, but I don’t put any faith in the results. How I would have loved to be on one of the B-29s that landed in England a short time ago. Maybe …. I pray …. maybe soon ……
Darling, my work is piling up, and both my WACs are taking examinations this ayem (morning) .. did you know I had another WAC working for me now. My staff has increased to [deleted] W [/deleted] 4 … 2 WACs & 2 Airmen. The other WAC, a corporal, is also married to [deleted] another [/deleted] a GI on the base …. but enuff [sic] of that chatter …. Write me soon darling and often … will you? Please.
All my love, [underlined] ALWAYS, [/underlined] Heathcliff

Dear Cathy:
I received your very nice letter yesterday. Was so glad to hear from you. My neice [sic] is coming to pick me up on June 6th and I’m going to Winnfield. My roommate is going to Germany, and I’ll be in Winnfield while he’s gone.
I’m sending you photographs made in the apartment and at the U.N. park, with the cherry trees in bloom. They were given to the U.N. by the Japanese. The pictures made in the apartment show all the plants. My roommate loves plants. That’s his department.
I think Mr. Carter did himself proud in London. The British seemed to like him very much. I like him. Naturally he’s a Southerner.
[page break]
I know being a post-mistress must be rewarding after being a news agent. No heavy lifting or counting pennies. I hope you do get a part in a play if its on stage or on television.
I’ll say goodbye for now.
Love,
Heathcliffe

go to a pay station, and the call would take anywhere from four to six hours to get through. I may try it again tomorrow. I’ve got to hear you …. Three minutes would be a very short time to talk to you though. I could talk for three hours or three days and if I know you half as well as I think I do, you could keep up with me.
Another thing I may do is go to Hempstead, make a record, and air mail it to you. [deleted] Iw [/deleted] wish you would record your voice and send me the record. Would you please, please, please …. Those professional, pictures you promised me. Darling, whatever happened to them. If only I had those, it would be some help.
[deleted] 7 [/deleted] LATER …. A COUPLE OF DAYS ….
You adoriable [sic] little idiot …. That [deleted] a [/deleted] is all I can say right now. You blessed, adorable idiot …. I received your letter today containing the pix …. God knows I’ve waited for those …. and the raking across the coals that you gave me. I have no energy to fight back. At least I have heard from you. And that’s something …. I’ve had letters returned from Shepherds Bush, Brentmead Gardens, and even Brentwood gardens (which I sent incorrectly.)
If the letter had come at any other time (it came about 30 minutes ago) I probably would have written a nasty letter that I should have regretted later. I’ll never forget the one time I sent a letter and then was sorry that I did. But when you’ve worked from 8 a.m. to one a.m. the next morning for a week, because you’re all alone on a job; you get no sleep no rest, and besides working and getting out a paper alone – which is no little job and for which other papers the same size have at least 1 dozen personnel -- and then have to stand inspections, and a million other military duties …. and then get yourself reprimanded by a major who, not not [sic] satisfied with your working 13 to 15 hours a day want his whims answered … well honey it leaves very little fight in you ….
If you had received my letters you would know that I am not going home Christmas; that I seldom go out …. trying to get $500 saved, so that I can apply for you to come. I’ve given up everything but work … work …. work. I feel as if I could lie down and sleep for three days. But no – I’ve gotta keep moving; keep going, going, going. I’ll go as long as I can, and then if I lose my reasoning, I’ll at least be free of all this work. Like a whirling dervish …. move, dammit, this way, little tin soldier; that way little tin soldier; back again, a little more forward; repeat it little tin soldier … repeat it repeat REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, MOVE, DAM YOU MOVE! FASTER, FASTER, DAMN YOU MOVE, MOVE, MOVE ……..
So forgive me darling if I look on your letter a little complacantly. [sic] If I hadn’t been writing to you I could feel more disgust with myself. All I feel is a terrible aching, longing relief that you are safe, and that I have at last heard from you – even if it was to give me a piece of your mind.
I’m typing this letter in my noon hour – I can eat tonight or tomorrow, because immediately after this hour I’ve got to distribute 5,000 newspapers. Darling, you’ve heard of the man -- Dr. Fankenstein [sic] -- was he British, or Polish, or German or what – who invented the monster that eventually destroyed him? I who [deleted] was [/deleted] once had a love for the newspaper business, who am miserable unless I am in this business, seem to have created a monster of my own … an overpowering, all-consuming automatan [sic] not pleased with taking all I’ve got to offer – all I have but wants my very soul …… Sometimes I hate the dight [sic] of newsprint, the smell of fresh ink, the clang, click, clack of dozens of [deleted] as [/deleted] typewriters in a city room; reading proof on galleys, checking forms, reading final proof for mistakes, and checking, and double checking to be sure that every bastard gets his name spelled right; [deleted] th [/deleted] (Shakespear [sic] used that word, in Henry V and others, so why can’t I?) I’ve been so irritable that I must have made many enemies of some of my best friends in these past weeks …. I hope they realize that I am under pressure and am not myself. I find it so easy to pick faults with my next door neighbors [sic] … my buddies … The WAC (one of those who had an opinion about you) isn’t talking to me now … but she is frustrated, and used to come into my office where she imparted freely of her wise advice (so she thought), and now she doesn’t bother me any more, so that is one of the blessings …. If she’d said many more things about the English, and you in particular, I think I’d have choked her ….
It is nearing Christmas season for many …. for me it will be another day. I’m not going home , as I said before, nor am I going to Elmira to accept Mrs. McDougall’s invitation. I may go to New York to see “Medea” or Oklahoma again. I saw Command Decision, recently …. story of a part of the 8th Air Force, it was a [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] monumental vehicle; a smash hit. This season has been particularly good … about 1 out of every three plays is a hit. The young playwright Tennessee Williams
[page break]
whose last smash was The Glass Menagerie, has just offered a new play which will undoubtedly garner the Pulitzer price [sic] and the Drama Circle Critic’s award as the best play of the year …. “A Streetcar Named Desire” … about an erring woman (Southern) who comes on the streetcar Desire to live in New Orleans. I tried to get tickets, but its sold out until next March. Just opened a week ago.
Enough of that. I suppose now that you’re a “Nomad”, traveling all around Devon – I hear that is wonderful country – never was there … I won’t be able to contact you via radio (shortwave) as I explained in the first part of this letter.
As I started to say, there isn’t much Christmas spirit, now will there be because persons like me won’t be able to see their loved ones, either my family or you. In the cafeterias and other places on the base, Christmas songs are being sung, [deleted] Bethallh [/deleted] “Bethlehem”, “Silent Night”, “White Christmas” …. and others. It only makes me remember other days when I was happy at Christmas time, when the world had a brighter outlook.
Darling, Cathie, for once and for all, let me explain that I love you, I love you; I love you; as I said at the beginning, I would have nothing to look forward to nothing to cherish; nothing to hold dear if it weren’t for you. It will take a little more time for me to save enough money to assure your passage …. that is if you want to come. If it were possible don’t you think I would return to England tomorrow to find you. I don’t suppose you receive the letter about the fact that the Army and New York state both disapproving transatlantic marriages; that they frowned upon them and that in other words they weren’t tolerated …… but if we never get together again, my love will never cease.
The photos of you don’t look natural …. you are much nice that that. What did they try to do to your real self -- hide it under a coat of mascara and makeup. But I do want the large ones.
All My love forever & ever

My dearest darling Cathie:
It has been only a couple of three days since I last wrote you, but here I go again and I hope you are not becoming bored with my constant chatter and babble. There is nothing like a good, long talk with you to cheer me up. However, I am still in the [deleted] da [/deleted] dark as to your feeling, and will have to wait until I receive the “first” letter from you before I really can write to you with any mutual understanding.
This is also a beautiful, crisp day, with not a cloud in the sky, nor a breeze on the ether. A day truly fit for a king, and if I knew that you loved me I would feel like a king; right now I feel a littl [sic] like a “prince”, but I will reserve my kingly feelings until I hear from you. Maybe this sudden gust of letters will surprise you, but it has been so long since I heard from you that I must let you know how I feel again and again. I took ALL your letters from their lair, where I had put them for safekeeping and re-read every one of them. Cathie, you’re wonderful. If I haven’t told you before remind me to tell you every day and every minute, until we’re 103, and then I’ll tell you every 30 seconds
Oh, to be in jolly olde England today …. I loved London on Sundays …. I loved England on Sundays and incidentally I loved you (pardon Love … present, past and future tense) on Sundays. Everyone was so lazy, strolling about the parks …. list3ning [sic] to soap box orators in Hyde Park, bidding for a dog, or a silk nightie, or a pot of flowers….. And the West End, practacally [sic]deserted until the movies opened in the afternoon…..
Going into New York a few nights ago, I got a panoramic view of New York, and the Empire State building standing ablaze with a million lights, head and shoulders above the otner [sic] skyscrapers …. along the river, there must have been a billion lights aglow, for miles and miles. I thought of you then --- of how I would like to be showing you those lights and maybe I would like New York a little better if there was someone there to share my enthusiasm. As it now stands, London still is way ahead in my heart, though she has no 102-story buildings, and dozens that tower more than 60 stories. I never have had a desire to visit the observation tower in the Emipre, [sic] because height holds no fascination for me. Having been 18 or 20,000 feet in an airplane, going up about 1,500 feet in a bldg. just lacks charm, or inducement.
BUT, once you are here (if you come) we still have a date to meet first atop the Empire, and I will have the photographers from all the metropolitan newspapers there to catch your warm charm and personality in the lens of the cameras. That should make quite a spread. One of the guys who works with me asked me the
[page break]
Page Two ….
other day when you were coming; that it would make a good story. I replied that it was a sacred matter and that there would be no publicity. But I’d like for you to agree to some publicity; if not, I’ll shout it from the roof of the Empire Bldg.
Did I tell you I got an exclusive interview with Betty Garrett who heads the cast of “Call Me Mister,” the top revue in New York; and about half a dozen pictures. I took my own photographer along. She is the wife of Larry Parks …. Perhaps you’ve seen him in “The Jolson Story”? He plays Al Jolson, the greatest of the old personalities of vaudeville.
After chow: Just returned from chow and will continue with this epistle. After glancing over the day’s newspapers, and seeing if there was anything worth noting …. I feel much like going to sleep. Although there is no room for sleep while you’re on the job …. Maybe it would be better if I tried sleeping nights .. they say that nights are made for love; then others say it was made for sleep; they even made a picture called History is Made at Night. How did I ever get on this subject anyway?
Next time I am going to double space my letters, so that they will seem longer than they are. Just think, if I had 2-spaced, I would have been on my fourth page, and I could have terminated it there; but as it is, I’ll have to continue until I am through with this page, or even another. Wish I had never started making letters so long, then my correspondents would be satisfied with a much shorter note.
Darling what are you doing today? Are you still studying hard. and do you have a lot of exams, and have you appeared in any students’ productions yet? I’d like to see you in your legit debut. What do you prefer …. “What Every Woman Knows,” or “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?”
Everyone coming in wanting to know something or people calling up to ask questions drive me mad …. its really rough … in these “here parts.” Remember the story I did on Vronsky and Babin, the piano team; I think I sent you a clipping: I’m going to attend their concert at Carnegie Hall Dec. 3. Usually they play Russian stuff …. Rachmaninoff among others …. I like his music …. veddy [sic] much.
I’m persistent in hounding you for a large tinted (or otherwise [deleted] wi [/deleted] if you don’t have it) photo of you to put up in my office. And if you have any snapshots of yourself ….. send me some [deleted] pnese [/deleted] please ……
Again I say, until I hear from you …… All my love
Forever & ever
Just

My dearest Cathie,
It was so good getting your Christmas card with the letter.
I had a very good Christmas. My neice, [sic] Bidie and Patsy Reid, came to New York for the holidays. They saw a couple of plays and went to Radio City Music Hall and saw the Christmas show.
Yes, I like Carter and believe he’d do a good job if the people don’t expect too much from him. I know Nixon came to England. It got a lot of coverage in the press. He wasn’t exactly received with open arms.
This is going to be a good year, I feel. I believe the economy will be straightened out and prices will go down a bit.
I certainly did see ‘Brigadoon’ &
[page break]
loved the music in it.
I liked the idea of you going out Caroling. [sic] It sounds right out of Dickens. You should be able to wake up the village with your caroling. [sic]
I may go to Germany this year and if I do I shall stop by and see you. What is the nearest big city where Airplanes stop?
We can plan that later – much later.
Well, I hope you have every happiness during the new year.
Love,
Heathcliffe

Description
An account of the resource

Despite earlier army reports being reliable, it is claimed that there is now German disinformation concerning the Russian campaign and the high number of casualties and prisoners.
After spotting a battle cruiser on 22nd July, an RAF operation was carried out on 24th July with damage to the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst battle cruisers and Prinz Eugen cruiser. 34 Messerschmitts were shot down. It claims German ships are now effectively confined to ports.
In a London radio broadcast, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s adviser, Harry Hopkins, outlines American assistance to Britain, including joint patrols by warships, significant numbers of aircraft, food, and military equipment already en route.
Page 2
Ten Serbs are hanged in Pancevo, on the orders of Bandelow after posters appeared stating that ten Serbs would be hanged for every German soldier killed or wounded. There are photographs of the hangings and of the notice.
Several occupied cities were fined for using the V-sign (for victory) as an act of defiance. To counter this, the propaganda ministry has stolen the sign for its own use.
Claims public is being deceived about share dividends being reduced (regulation to limit the distribution of profits on 21st June 1941).
Page 3
The RAF flight range will increase as nights draw in, with heavier bombs at their disposal. Advice is dispensed to German urban populations on preparations to take for the autumn and winter.
Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, on 15 July denigrates German media propaganda on the state of British nutrition; he claims German prisoners are amazed at how abundant it is and points to American supplies in the coming year with a higher nutritional value than the last fifteen years.
America and Britain and its allies have frozen all Japanese assets as a result of it taking French-Indochina.
Page 4
By taking over protection of Iceland, the United States has reduced the danger zone for British ships crossing the Atlantic, fulfilling the United States’ Secretary of State, Cordell Hull’s promise that weapons and foodstuff would safely reach their destination.
With the news that Dr Robert Ley had visited some bombed cities in West Germany, the correspondent makes some comparisons between the good things England is doing for its people compared to Germany’s leaders.
In addition to all the steelworks, armaments works and mines acquired in a number of territories, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring has acquired Omnipol A.G. as an import export company to buy and sell as it wants.

MY TRIP FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO NEW YORK, ON ROUTE TO UNITED KINGDOM
[underlined] WITH R.A.A.F. 1943 [/underlined]
[underlined] AUS 426442. SGT H.E. SHAKSPEARE. [/underlined]
One of the first United States cities we reached the first big city was San Francisco. As we approached the city the sun was setting. It was a glorious sunset, the colors [sic] running in broad stripes, like futuristic daubs from a painter's brush, and varying in color from lilac, rust and maroon near the horizon to pale greens and blues and ochres, vivid yellows and oranges higher up, and shell pink merging into crimson where the last flickering rays of the sun caught the cumulus clouds above the horizon.
We didn't see the San Francisco skyline that night, because darkness fell quickly, but we did see thousand [sic] of pinpoints of light on the rising slopes behind the waterfront, and we did get a glimpse of the two great bridges for which the city is famous – the Golden Gate Bridge – the two great supporting columns of which are known as the Golden Gate – and the Oakland Bridge, the biggest in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge is 2 1/2 miles long and the Oakland Bridge, which links the two sides of the harbor, [sic] and Treasure Island, is seven or eight miles long. No leave in San Francisco, although we stopped there overnight, but next morning we saw a lot of the harbor (which is normally [missing letter]hrouded by mist, and was to some extent that morning.) We embarked on [missing word] ferry which took us on a 45-minute trip across the harbor to Oakland. On that trip we saw miles and miles of docks, which for layout and facilities generally were superior to anything in Australia; we saw Treasure Island in more detail; Alcatraz, the famous prison island known as “The Rock”, from which escape is said to be impossible; we saw our first skyscrapers, two or three huge buildings of what seemed to be 20 or 30 stories [sic]. Then we went ashore again, and straight on to a train. In next to no time the chaps had got busy with chalk, and the outside of each Pullman car carried such inscriptions as "Australia to Berlin," "If you're a peach, you're welcome here," and drawings of boomerangs and kookaburras, and tankards of foaming beer. The chaps were in a particularly good humour at finding sleeping cars awaiting them, and their spirits were still further improved when our first meal on the train came along. It was served, as all the meals on the train have been served, to us in our compartments, and still steaming hot when we received it. The food was first class – well-cooked, appetisin[missing letter] and varied, and the standard did not fall off during the entire trip. Occasionally with a meal, as on the first day, we were issued with a stick of candy, or a packet of cigarettes, or something of the kind, contributed, we understand, by unions and other organizations, in contrast to our Australian Comforts Fund system.
Our train pulled out from Oakland on Sunday, May 23rd, 1943[, with American girl stenographers leaning out of their office windows, waving goodbye, and before long we passed through a negro colony of old ramshackle, timber-frame houses, most of them two or three-stories [sic] high. We saw a number of cheerful, grinning negros, but the general impression of the colony was of squalor beside which [inserted] [[symbol] [/inserted] the worst slums in Australia would look like model housing schemes [inserted] [symbol]] [/inserted]. Individually, however, the negros are polite, willing and extremely happy, as our particular car porter, a carbon copy of Stepin Fetchit, has proved.
The next township we came to was one of the prettiest of the whole trip – a charming, sleepy little place called Sacramento, with delightful modern two and three storeyed timber frame homes, painted to merge into the green background of trees and shrubs which grew all
[page break]
-2-
around them. Lawn ran beneath the trees from house to house, and ther[missing letter] were no fences. When you see a place like this it makes you think how much prettier Australian cities would look without the fences around every suburban block. We all wanted to stop at Sacramento, but we rolled on across the fertile plains of California (climate similar to that of South Australia) on which almost anything grows – tomatoes, apricots, peaches, plums, olives, dates, and every kind of vegetable. There were scores of market gardens on the undulating plains.
Towards nightfall we were running through purple sage, and [inserted symbol] then we passed Winnemucca, and just as darkness fell we entered the [inserted symbol] Feather River Canyon, one of the loveliest pieces of scenery in California. We awoke the next morning, May 24th, 1943, to the beauty of [inserted symbol] Nevada mountains – the Sierra Nevada. Magazines were forgotten, and we spent the entire day looking out of the window. We travelled across[missing letter] the prairies, four or five thousand feet above sea level, and within a few miles of us on either side, were imposing, clearcut mountains, a most denuded of vegetation, for Nevada gets very little rainfall. The country was sparsely populated, but here and there were tiny homestead at the foot of the mountain slopes – mountain slopes from which the Blackfoot Indians rode down at dusk or at dawn in the days of early settlement, and the covered wagons gathered into their hollow circles. This was the country of Billy the Kid, cattle rustlers blazing six-shooters, and saloons. The mountains of Nevada are not something tiny like the Adelaide Hills but huge, majestic, towering peaks, rising to 9,000 and 10,000 feet, and nearly all snow-capped, their summits glistening white in the morning sun.
Then we came to Elko, a tiny little town which seemed to be inhabited by mixed breeds and whites, and here we had a short march, for exercise. Back into the train again and on past big cattle ranche[missing letter] into Utah, but still the mountains on either side. More vegetation on the mountains in Utah, but the peaks still blanketed in snow, and the mountains converging on us on either side. The second night came, and with it another magnificent sunset. This time the sky was mainly pale pink, lilac and crimson, and, with floodwater lying on the left of the line acting as a mirror for the sky and mountain peaks, there were some indescribably beautiful views.
In the afternoon of this second day we passed through Salt Lake City, travelling for miles before reaching it across a great dese[missing letters] of salt, the bed of a dried out lake, from which the city takes its name. Salt Lake City, is, I believe, a Mormon city, but we didn't see [inserted] into [/inserted] much of it.
On the third morning, Tuesday, May 25th, we crossed into Colorado, taking the scenic route after leaving a town called Grand Junctio[missing letter] Then, for probably 100 miles, we wended our way along the banks of the Colorado River through the Glenwood Canyon, which is undoubtedly the most glorious scenery we have seen. We were right down at the bottom of the Canyon, the track running within feet of the river on one side, and a magnificent motor road skirting the other bank. On either side the towering cliffs rose for 1500 feet or more. The river was flowing fast, with frequent rapids which lashed the water into a white fury, and great cliffs on either side were wooded with pines and firs and spruces. They rose in towering columns, with here and there an unusual rock strata which was reminiscent of pictures of the Colliseum [sic]. At every curve or bend in the line a new glistening peak would come into view, and then perhaps a brick red mountain, studded with bottle-green fir trees, the snow piled thick among the firs.

America is a glorious country. There is no doubt about that. The homes just seem to have sprouted in among the trees, and are usually painted green and white. In the Glenwood Canyon we saw one particularly beautiful home. In front of it, sloping down to the Colorado River was about an acre of lawn, and behind the lawn was a beautiful little two storeyed home, painted green and white. This was the most beautiful stretch of scenery we saw on the entire route. Mountain peak after mountain peak, many of the larger ones snow-covered in endless succession. They formed a great chain on either side, and in between them was the raging water, snarling over the boulders, and forming almost continuous rapids.
Just before midday that day we saw our first sheep in America. They were grazing in lush alfalfa (lucerne in Australia) on the banks of the Colorado, with the thickly timbered mountains, still snow-capped, as a background.
Our train was climbing all the time now into the Rockies, and on the mountain slopes running right down to the train track were fields of taraxacum, small bright yellow weeds, the American counter-part of the Australian dandelion. In their profusion, however, they transformed the mountain slopes into a replica of Wordsworth's field of golden daffodils.
At this stage, about 11 a.m. or midday on Tuesday, May 25th, 1943, we were eight or nine thousand feet above sea level, and getting near the summit. About this time we passed through Red Cliff, another quaint little shanty town in a valley, with what appeared to be a mixed population. We were now getting near the snow level. There were snow-covered peaks above us still, but a few miles away on either side, and actually below us, were other peaks carrying snow. The air was bracing. It was a pleasure just to breathe it in. At 2:30 p.m. we reached the summit – 10,240 feet above sea level. Two huge locomotives each 15 feet high had hauled us to that height, and we left one of them behind at the summit, travelling fast down the slopes on the other side past snow fences erected to keep the snow from blocking the line. Then we rolled through Malta, another little shanty town, and at 4 p.m. we came to Salida, a little Midwest place something like an isolated suburb of an Australian capital gone completely American – a miniature King's Cross, with a five and ten cent store (Woolworth's), neon signs, and all the glitter and some of the glamour of the bigger American cities. A colourful little place, and it had a few pretty girls who evoked the long whistle of approbation which our fellows invariably turn on when anything with a figure and a skirt on goes by.
The warm summer sunshine was melting the snow on the mountains and on the eastern side of the Rockies tiny fast-flowing streams were [letters inserted] finding their way down the mountain slopes. Trout fishing is particularly good in this region according to our few American informants on the train, and from the train we could see anglers casting their flies. [inserted three words]
At Salida we took our second exercise march and the local population turned out in force to see us. Little negro boys ran alongside us as we marched, picking up the nickels and Australian pennies that the boys tossed to them. It was nice to stretch our legs and drink in the bracing mountain air nearly 7,000 feet up.
Then on we went again, with here and there a herd of mountain goats, and an isolated cabin or two. At this stage we had been travelling for nearly two days through scenery which for quantity and quality eclipsed anything which most of us had seen in Australia.

Just before Pueblo, which we reached at tea-time, we passed through the Royal Gorge Canyon, and here again towering cliffs rose almost vertically on either side of us. The railroad on which we travelled was built on a concrete foundation, and seemed in places to over-hang the water – the water in this case being the Arkansas River. If we had had fishing rods with us we could have done some trout fishing of our own in the stream. As we ran through the Canyon we passed unde[missing letter] the world's highest bridge – everything is superlative in the United States – the Royal Gorge Amusement Bridge, which spans the canyon, and is 1700 feet long and 1052 above the canyon.
At Pueblo the women of the town brought "cookies" (a broad descriptive term apparently covering all sorts of small cakes and biscuits), and piles of magazines down to the train. We read them until the daylight faded about 9 p.m. and it was time to go to bed. We had now been through four States – California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado, and had started our journey across Kansas to Kansas City on the border of Missouri.
We awoke on Wednesday, May 26th, 1943, just before we reache[missing letter] Council Grove – just another delightful little country town – and then the railroad wound along between undulating fields, the line itself bordered by wild irises and a pretty little white wildflower, the name of which we did not know. Two more pretty little towns – they are all pretty – Lyndon (population 750 people) and Ottawa (population 10,000) Ottawa being something like Sacramento in miniature, and not to be confused with the Canadian Ottawa. The lack of fences made it look as if the houses had grown of their own accord in among the cottonwood and beech and elm trees. From there we went on to Osawatomie (population 4,000) and here a crowd of negro boys and girls ranging in age from about three to about eight years, posed for their photographs to be taken and then scrambled for Australian pennies and American nickels and dimes, and oranges and apples, and anything else we had to give them. Bare-footed and clad in faded blue jeans or their elder brother[missing letter] long pants rolled up to the knees, their fruit-crammed pockets made grotesque shapes of their skinny little bodies.
On to Paola (3,500 people) – just as pretty as most of the other towns – and then on to Kansas City the second big city we have struck since San Francisco. Kansas City and the great Missouri River we were all waiting for them with keen anticipation – especially as we had an hour there, and were going to take our exercise marching through the city.
And so, at length, we came to Kansas City – bigger than Salt Lake City or Adelaide or Brisbane or Perth with a population of 425,000 and a magnificent railway station fringed with parks and concrete highways. However, as with most of the cities we have seen, the railway station was on the outskirts of the town, and our short march did not take us through the main streets. We passed a number of four and five storey buildings though, and got a big hand from the Kansas City girls. Kansas City has about half a dozen or eight big skyscrapers and is on the border of the State of Missouri, and lies on the Missouri River. As we marched through the streets we all whistled "Waltzing Matilda" and carried out the usual custom of tossing pennies and halfpennies with kangaroos on the backs of them to the negro boys and girls. At Kansas City, as at all the other places, we were staggered by the number of automobiles. Even in the negro quarter near Oakland there had seemed to be motor cars to burn, each ramshackle little home having two or three cars. The Americans seem to drive their cars to work, and
[page break]

there were huge car parks outside every factory building. They get four times the Australian petrol ration. We stopped for about three quarters of an hour at Kansas City, and then rolled east again, crossing almost immediately over the Missouri. Kansas City we will remember as the city of bridges. There were bridges everywhere – four huge bridges over the river crammed into a river frontage of 200 or 300 yards and each bridge bigger than Prince's Bridge, Melbourne. The bigg[missing letters] cities have few level crossings, avoiding them by the use of subways an[missing letter] overways. The Missouri is a fine big river, as broad, if not broader [inserted words] than our Murray.
During the trip the officers on the train had financed a canteen and made arrangements for us to pick up supplied en route, and we eventually got them at Kansas City – such things as chocolates, razor blades, matches and cigarettes. For tens of miles then we passed through glorious, fertile country, with everywhere green crops, green grass, green trees. All America has seemed green to us. About the only things in the country which are not green are the Americans themselves. They know all the answers. Incidentally, they seem to be tipping Roosevelt strongly for another term as President. Except for one or two States, all the country here seems to be as good and as prosperous as the best in the Commonwealth.
St. Joseph, a typical American small city, was the next place we passed, and just at bedtime we reached Des Moines, almost due north of Kansas City. Travelling this way we missed St. Louis, and did not see a great deal of Missouri. Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, and although we had only fleeting glimpses of the homes on either side of the track, we could see the white circle of lights on the top of one of the skyscrapers, indicating that the city was the capital of the State. Then we went to bed, a little disappointed that we would be crossing the Mississippi while we were asleep. When we awoke on Thursday, May 27th, 1943, we were running through rich country in the State of Illinois and soon crossed the Rock River and came to a place called Sycamore. About midday, after travelling for miles through huge railway yards, we came to a stop on the outskirts of Chicago, so far out in fact that we couldn't see the skyscrapers which the city must have. It is an industrial city of the first magnitude, twice or three times the size of Melbourne. We passed hundreds of warehouses, many of them delapidated [sic], ugly buildings, and in the same quarter we passed through another negro colony, by comparision [sic] with which even the Oakland negro colony was a model suburb. The Americans may find, in the next generation or two that they have a huge slum clearance problem on their hands. At Chicago, for the first time, there seemed to be a preponderance of brick and stone buildings. Nearly all the homes in the other cities ha[missing letter] been of timber-frame construction. We took our exercise march through some better-class negro homes, and we passed a school for negro childre[missing letter] It was their lunch-hour and they came running out on to the road, completely disregarding their teachers, and scrambled for small coins, fighting so tenaciously for the money that at times half a dozen of them were on the ground at the same time. Nearly all roads in and out of Chicago are of concrete, banked on the bends, and we saw many huge motor trailers, and some of their street cars.
Leaving Chicago and its chimney stacks and big industry behind we skirted Lake Michigan, a huge expanse of water about 300 miles long and 60 wide, and swept on into Indiana, picking up water as we went from troughs between the rails. We were travelling right across the north of Indiana, near the State of Michigan, and South Bend,

another well developed little city, perhaps, 50,000 people was next on the line. America seems to have a lot of cities with populations from 20,000 to 100,000 bridging the gap between their big cities and their country towns. Seeing them makes you realise that Australia could do with more of them.
We all got a most pleasant surprise at Toledo. The maps we had did not show it to be a city of very great size, but when we pulled into the station about 5 p.m. we saw quite a lot of the central railway station there, and could see the outlines of two or three skyscrapers. There was quite a bit of fun on the railway station. The private ownership of railways in this country has resulted in what appears to be considerable duplication. America has 37 per cent of the world's rail-road mileage according to magazine advertisements, and from what we have seen the States must have at least 50 per cent of the world's rolling stock. Anyway, their railway stations have concrete platforms at ground level, with walk-down steps from the trains. At Toledo there were a dozen or so parallel platforms, and sleek stream-lined trains – crack railroad fliers owned by half a dozen different companies – were standing in them, carrying mostly civilian passengers with a sprinkling of service men and women. Beautiful girls, a lot of them were, and although they were separated by 15 or 20 yards our chaps quickly settled down to making friends. [inserted] letters [/inserted] One incident was particularly amusing. Three or four very pretty girls, waiting for their tea in the dining car of one of the sleak expresses nearby beckoned some of our chaps to come over, and a most interesting dialogue in sign language took place because we couldn't leave the train. The girls exhibited all sorts of inducements, including a bottle of whiskey, a packet of cigarettes, and their knives and forks, as much as to say "come over to dinner." [inserted letters] Perhaps it was just as well that their train pulled out at that stage. We pulled out ourselves a little later, giving the thumbs up sign and the two-finger V for Victory signal to all and sundry, and then we were on our way to Cleveland, running round the fringe of Lake Erie, and at one stage crossing a great bridge with broad expanses of water stretching to the horizon on either side. We have seen literally scores of big bridges on our trip.
Toledo and Cleveland are both in Ohio. It was after dark when we reached Cleveland after running through country very similar to that of Tasmania – rich and fertile, and split up into small holdings of 50 or 60 acres, worth about 125 dollars an acre. It has been a real pleasure to see neon signs again in some of the cities at night. At Cleveland we saw a magnificent building with a steeple summit, towering 300 or 400 feet up. Then we were rolling on across the north of Pennsylvania towards New York State. What happens from there we don't know but the rest of the trip will be a subject for later letters. We've all loved the United States so far, but the Yanks can have it. Australia will do us.

My dear Miss Kathleen Hodgson:-
If you possibly can, won’t you kindly send me your dainty photograph “up on your toes”; I wish to frame your pretty toe photo for my room.
It may interest you to know that I, too, am a dancer and some day I hope to dance nearly as well as you. I like toe work most of all and practice very hard every day.
Kindly let me know when and where you will dance in New York, as I would like to see you.
I wish you continued success and a worldful [sic] of happiness and thank you eversomuch [sic] in advance for your dainty photo on your toes. Please do not disappoint me as I shall be waiting most anxiously for it.
Just a little friend and sincere admirer,

Title
A name given to the resource
Le Courrier de l’Air No. 28, 1941
Description
An account of the resource
Describes how German army’s progression around Moscow is not as rapid or complete as indicated by propaganda from Berlin. They are meeting tenacious defence from Russia, preventing the German infantry from joining the Panzer Divisions. Suggests Germany needs to take Moscow and destroy Russian army for victory. Russia’s huge space provides much flexibility. Cartoon of ‘promised land’ with Nazi eagle perched on victory sign and ravaged earth below. RAF in west keeping over half of the Luftwaffe fighters from the Russian front. Berlin correspondent of L’Alcazar on 15th October doubts Russians would capitulate even with the loss of major cities.
Huge increases in military aircraft production in United States, with ten times more output in September 1941. Free French Naval Forces commander of ‘Rubis’ submarine describes how it torpedoes a 4,000 ton merchant ship and suffers damage from depth charges. It surfaces the following day and re-joins its base. The Rubis is made a companion of the Ordre de la Libération on 15th October for its wartime service for France and crossing a minefield during an attack despite being damaged. Mussolini suffering heavy ship losses because of British navy and RAF in Mediterranean.
Free French Fleet has about 50 ships. Photograph of Admiral Muselier and Sir Dudley Pound, Admiral of the Fleet. Photograph of a general from Free French forces, together with an English general, inspecting 16-ton Valentine medium tanks said to be the best of their type.
Describes preparations and outcome of Anglo-Russian-American conference in Moscow at which a package of aid for Russia was agreed. Lord Beaverbrook representing England and W. Averell Harriman the United States. Russian arms production capacity and aircraft (MIG3 and Stormovik dive bomber) praised. Poster showing results of Moscow conference. Quotation from Clausewitz’s ‘On War’ 1833, suggesting Hitler is acting as though victorious as his opponent is too strong.

Title
A name given to the resource
Luftpost, number 4, 16 June 1941
Description
An account of the resource
On 7th June Sir Robert Peirse, Commander in Chief of Bomber Command, reported on the British success against German vessels since 12th March. For land-based operations, they are mass producing larger aircraft with larger bombing capacity to have more impact in a single sortie.
Article about Princess Hohenlohe, formerly Stephany Richter, of Hungarian Jewish origin. She had associations with Hitler and his entourage. Arrested in May and sentenced to deportation, she has been assisting the American government. As a result, Dr. Kurt Rieths, former German ambassador in Vienna, was arrested. The German-American federation, financed by the National Socialist Party, has also been dissolved and its leader sent to prison for embezzlement.
Because of the RAF actions on ships, the article questions how many reinforcements are reaching General Rommel in North Africa.
Favourably compares British and American steel and oil production to the Axis countries, suggesting they will, therefore, produce a higher number of bombs.
Cartoon called “The Final Victory 1941”.
Calorie consumption comparisons show a reduction between early months of 1940 and 1941. Although Germany and Denmark are still above the recommended 2500 calories per day, the Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians and French have insufficient. It suggests Germany is plundering them for its own needs.
List of German targets in Britain.
Eight facts and eight questions are listed on the subject of Rudolf Hess, who landed in Scotland on 10th May.
