My dear Doris,
I was hoping for some mail yesterday but did not expect the grand big one I got. Three Air letters from you & one from your mother!! I was so thrilled & excited when Pop came in with them. I opened yours & put them in their correct order (they all having been written the same night) & had a grand old read! Lets see now. About your snaps. How did we like them? We are of the same opinion as Malcolm Shall I tell you what he said, or rather, how he described you? Had written about an air graph all about your mother, then added quite casually “By the way, Mrs Weeks has a most beautiful daughter.” So there you are! I was reading the letter to Pop & he said “So I knew there was a catch in it!” Yes poor little Peggy has had a bad blow. She is brave, without a doubt. I wish you’d check up on her information re. location, I have done so this end, & it is all the same, everyone was given that place & mentioned to you & all our friends were most excited over it, being so near Swiss territory. I know only too well, my dear, that Malcolm had too much to live for, & loved life too dearly, to take any risks. He would bale out if he could. And that is what tortures me – [underlined] Could [/underlined] he? I lie awake for hours at night, wondering what happened & praying to God that he didn’t suffer. It is strange you should mention that you’ve been dreaming about him. Every night for a week, & even longer before he went, I saw him baling out, & one night I screamed so loudly I woke myself & Pop up. Instead of a parashute [sic] this night, he was holding a white shirt by the shoulders & I was yelling, when I woke up, “He’ll never make it!” When a friend of ours heard the dreadful news (he’s headmaster at Watervale school) he said “Payney is alright. I was dreaming about him last night & saw him bale out & land safely & saw him
[page break]
& heard him laugh, just as tho he stood in front of me.” Wasn’t it strange? Well. After hearing our news, I never dreamed of the poor kid again & I used to try & will myself to dream as he seemed quite lost to me, but I couldn’t. However for a week past now I have been dreaming of him & tho some of the dreams do not make sense, I see him quite vividly usually looking thro a window at me, always laughing, but I can never get near enough to speak to him. Yesterday I had a letter from Keith & he wrote “No you know, Mother, I’ve the strangest feeling about Mac & am sure we’re going to have news of him.” I couldn’t let my hopes be raised because a disappointment would break my heart, if it isn’t already broken. I had several snaps from Mac but none of him before Edinburgh Castle, so if he sent it I didn’t receive it. He gave me a gold Airforce locket for my birthday (his last in Aus!) & I always wear his photo in it. Now I must stop but will write another. Bye, lots of love

My dear Doris,
Your letter was posted on 26th Sept & I rec. it today – Nov. 16th – so they are coming rather quickly now. I was so glad to receive your letter & the snaps – thanks so much for them. I have had time to read your letter thro, & have a look at the snaps, since I scribbled your hasty air letter. The snaps are lovely – Mr Payne said, on seeing you, “The fuzzy haired little tike!” Well that’s just like him. Yes I can imagine how you miss Malcolm’s company – that’s how we’re missing his letters, & the hurt seems to get deeper each day. He was always a fussy kid with his clothes & when he was pressing his pants neat he used to take possession of the kitchen, there was no possible hope of doing any work in there for two or three hours. He has worked [indecipherable word] doubly hard & deserves everything that comes his way. He was quite modest about having been recomm-
[page break]
ended for a commission. He was always a tease & used to have me on pins & needles at times, I never knew when he was serious. Dear God! if he could only come back to us! We get very depressed, his father said tonight that at times he cannot realize we will not see the dear kid again. For we have given up all hope, after such a long time. I had a letter from Mrs Brown today but she had to bring it to a conclusion, the tears were falling & she could not see to write. She is very grateful to you, Doris, for having obtained the Canadian addresses for us. I had a letter from Mrs Armstrong yesterday, ours crossed as its only a fortnight since I wrote her. Doris has gone cherry picking in the beautiful Adelaide hills – She was in charge of the girls & the housekeeping during the pea picking at Reynella, & she had a lovely letter from the State Superintendant saying that as she had such a wonderful report from their employer she had no hesitation of putting her in charge again at Basket Range., They have a little furnished cottage, & one girl takes

over the cooking today, & another one tomorrow [indecipherable word]. They pay £1 week board or rather towards their keep, & when the books are done on the completion of the job, there is usually quite a few shillings refund coming to each girl. At Reynella a lady rented the furnished cottage during the year but had to leave it for the month during the pea picking. She left her piano carefully locked & covered all over. Several of the girls could play & several sang nicely & the temptation was just too much. They found a [deleted] nile [/deleted] nail file unlocked the piano, & locked it again when they left. The morning they were leaving they decided to have a sleep in – Their employers young son came with the milk & told them a huge snake was just outside the back door. There was a mad scramble for dressing gowns & slippers & armed with brooms, axes, & what have you, they killed the beastly thing. The weather here at present is terribly – it is so hot & sultry & sticky – one hasn’t much energy for working. I think I had better conclude this dreadful scribble Doris – you growl about your writing – I wish I had such a neat hand
[page break]
Beleive [sic] me, dear, I pray day & night that even yet a miracle might happen & our dear boy come safely back to us.
The time is long, & the waiting hard, tho.
Fondest love,
Yours sincerely,
M L Payne. xxxxx

My dear Doris,
Replying to your lovely letter of Oct 3rd. I was so very pleased to receive it – you say you wept over my letter – we both shed tears over yours – it seemed to bring our darling so near to us. Almost five months have gone by since we lost him - & we grieve just as much today as we did during those first dreadful weeks. We shouldn’t I know, he would not want it so, & he himself was such a brave little chap but he was so very dear to us. Often now I fancy I hear him laughing - indeed I have awoke with a start many times thinking I heard his voice. Yes, we received his lovely photo – personally we preferred him without the moustache – it aged him rather but it’s a lovely photo. His photos all stand on the radio – the coloured enlargement he had taken when he was A.C.II – It is very like him – so boyish & his lips are parted in a half grin, one can almost swear
[page break]
he is just about to say something – “Hooey!” for instance! Then there’s the one from London & the one we love a lot of Bud, Don, Allan, & Malcolm. Did you see that one?
Malcolm wrote us that he was “horribly excited – no kidding” – on seeing his first snow fall – he had never actually seen it fall before. Indeed I have only seen three falls of snow, then of course it didn’t last very long. We love the winter evenings, too, tho personally I hate the cold. Then too I dread the summer so what have you! Malcolm used to write amusing accounts of the “beaut pink & white complexion he had acquired in England. He was always so brown at home & revelled in the hot weather when he’d dress in shorts & sandals & become browner than brown.
We have just received a telegram from Keith, advising of his transfer to Queensland, so he’s a long way from home now. I sent your snaps to him, & returning them he wrote “Doris sounds a swell kid to me, & I think I’ll drop her a line myself.” We have had a houseful of visitors over the
[page break]
week end but peace & quiet reigns once more; so am sitting down to some solid work – answering correspondence – I have piles of letters here beside me waiting to be answered & knitting crying out to be done. We are knitting for the civilian relief in England at present. Recently I met a lady who knows Lincoln well & we had quite an interesting chat. Her sister married a Watervale resident (our local M.P.) about 20 years ago, both being towards middle age, & this lady whom I mentioned as knowing Lincoln so well, came out with her sister & has lived with her ever since. They are both such dears. Their home town is Sheffield. Miss Warren told me that years ago her two young brothers were apprenticed to an engineering firm in Lincoln. She told me an amusing incident of how she was one day confronted in the fields as she thought by some “huge bulls”, to find to her relief they were separated by a ditch or dyke. She’s quite a character, really, but is much loved.
Did you get in touch with Peggy Tagget? Allans [sic] nephew was killed in air crash in Wales in Aug. last year – he was 9 months
[page break]
older than Malcolm & his mother is a week older than me. Its very tragic really.
By the way Doris, none of your letters have been cencored [sic], which rather surprised me. Please write just when ever you feel like unburdening your mind – your letters are very much looked for. Our lot is hard, but my heart just aches for you young folk, so cruelly parted when life held so much for you. Did I ever mention that Peggy T. has a book in which she writes a letter to Allan every day? Poor little thing.
We all send our love to you, Doris. Nineteen forty four will be just making an exit, may forty five be much brighter for all you brave souls in those far, war torn parts.
Fondest love
Yours very sincerely
M.L. Payne.
[underlined] P.S [/underlined] Isn’t this a cute little chap? It’s our native (Koala) bear & they live entirely on the very young baby gum leaves.

Continuation –
My dear Doris – Here I am again. About Malcolm’s Studio photo, I mentioned it in a recent sea mail letter. I hope the wool will be correct shade for you. Will send you another lot later. Who knows, that non stop weekend flight may even yet transpire. Our weekly dust storm yesterday was appalling, it was impossible to see a hundred yards away quite early in the afternoon & it continued until night. Was up at daylight this morning cleaning up & by noon had everything looking nice & despite the fact that my back was broken & I had housemaids knees I felt quite smug & self satisfied, only to see, to my horror, another dust storm coming. However it has kept to the hills this time. What a glorious birthday you had, Doris! And such lovely gifts! I hope your prayer is answered, it was a lovely thought, turning down the glass. We were amused to know Malcolm still remembered “Fred & Maggie” – we’ve had many a laugh over them but oh! they were weak! Maggie especially was the dumbest person ever. Freds greeting every evening was “Yoo, hoo Maggie I’m home [underlined] dear [/underlined]. By hove I don’t know, a man slaves all day at the office only to find – such & such – usually Maggie had given his best suit to a beggar, or the twins had crawled down the drain & got stuck! Getting back to your birthday – thank you so very much for your kind thought in sending us some cake – we shall look forward immensely to receiving it. Doris will be having her 21st early in the year, & I’m puzzled as to what to give her. She has a lovely lot of linen & glass ware set. They have bought a beautiful bed roome [sic] suite & have it here. I don’t know whether I mentioned this before? So Doris just comes & goes feeling quite free to do so. Incidentally your letter to her came yesterday & Pop re-directed it, as she is now in the River district, cutting [indecipherable word] for drying. They certainly see some country.
[page break]
I am feeling a bit anxious about Don B’s mother. When she spoke to me on the phone she particularly emphisised [sic] the fact that she was sending off a letter to me that night & I haven’t heard from her. She sounded very upset & rambled quite a lot, I’m afraid she may be ill. However, I have written her so hope for a reply. She is taking things very hard, she didn’t give up hope, & now things seem so utterly hopeless she is distracted.
She sent me a beautiful book of poems called “This, my son”. They are really lovely. Two of my young nieces are staying with me for a week & its lovely to hear then running & yelling, after the quietness. We have felt so utterly lost the last 3 years without our boys. Please give my love to your mother Doris & I shall answer her letter just as soon as I get in a supply of letter cards as these are the only two I have on hand. I pray for you, & with you day & night. Our fondest love. Yrs sincerely

My Dear Doris
I was ever so pleased to see an air letter yesterday, dated 18.1.45, & completed the following day. The one you wrote the previous day (17th) has not arrived yet but I hope it is there tomorrow. Do you know, I think some of your letters have failed to reach me – I had three all written Dec. 11th, telling me about your birthday – remember. Then I had no more for over 3 weeks & the next one was dated Jan 1st. You are certainly having a dreadful winter – we are told its the coldest for over 50 years, so therefore it’s the worst you remember! I guess your mum was wild when the wind blew the pane out of the window at that unearthly hour especially. Had I been present I could have helped quite considerably – with the curses. Glad the cake arrived safely & only hope it [underlined] did [/underlined] keep moist [indecipherable word]? No use you trying to be modest my dear, I’ve shown your snaps to hosts of people & one & all say “Isn’t she lovely!” So what! I showed Miss Warren the pictures of Lincoln & she was so thrilled. She has been in the Cathedral very often & says its very lovely. Did you ever hear from the Air Ministry re. Malcolm’s bike, Doris? I hope you didn’t mind us having it sent to you, I know it is what Malcolm would have wished. I had 17 more letters returned last week – I haven’t told his dad – Have I written you since we had a letter from Air Board to the effect that the International R. Cross, Geneva
[page break]
had been making special inquiries but deeply regretted without success - ? I forget whether it had come to hand before I wrote your last air letter. Don’t know whether I’m sickening for any childish complaint or whether I overdone it in the garden this morning, but have come all out in a prickly rash & feel rotten – headachy & eyes watering –
Should the other air letter arrive safely I’ll answer it immediately.
Please don’t thank me for the parcel – we owe you lot’s more than a paltry cake – You once asked me if [deleted] our [/deleted] the name of our home had a special meaning – it’s the name of a little town in Victoria – where Mr Payne was born. Beleive [sic] it has a native meaning but have never been able to find out. Keep well – lots of love. Yrs lovingly.

My dear Doris
As predicted, your air letter of Jan. 1st arrived today so must endeavour to answer same tho there is so little to write about. I was glad to note no letters had gone amiss after all, tho sorry indeed to see the cause of your silence I do hope your leg is quite better by now – you poor child you’ve had a bad spin!
Yesterday I had a letter from Dept Air asking my permission to hand you Malcolm’s cig case & snapshots. They admit you have permission from me, yet must write to have it verified. They make one mad. However, I lost no time in answering the letter.
I have not used the hankies yet, Doris – I know I’ll only lose them soon as I take them from the box. Anyhow I don’t need to wipe my nose to think of you!! I do honestly beleive [sic] that but for your letters we’d have gone insane – they have helped us so much, youve [sic] no idea. & we appreciate more than we can ever express to you, what you’ve done for us. Allan & Bruce are evidently [deleted] a [/deleted] coming home together – Grupts are terribly thrilled & next week Betty’s babe is expected so all their good things are coming together. Malcolm would
[page break]
be ragging the life out of Betty these days. She’s only a little thing but very nice.
Your wool should be arriving in about a fortnight I should say, Doris. The week I parcelled it up I went down to it for a week thus delaying the posting of same. Hope to be forwarding your mother a small parcel of “eats” in a day or so.
Now once again I must away.
Our love to you both.
Keep well. Fondest love.
Yours lovingly

It’s a month today since I received your last letter so hope this one finds you & your mother well. Last week I had a letter from Mrs Shaw dated May 28th & she says she has been notified by the Air Ministry that Midge & his comrades were laid to rest in a cemetery in France. We have not had any word to this effect & we wondered whether you had Doris? Would you please get in touch with Air Ministry & the Red Cross & try & find out if Malcolm was also with Midge? Being right on the spot as it were I think you would get more information that we could. We have written the Dep. of Air here but so far have had no reply. I think it would ease the dreadful pain in my heart a wee bit to know the dear kid was cared for at the last. Mrs Shaw also mentioned the A.M. had sent her a photo – I presume of Midge’s grave. She is very hurt & bitter poor dear & I’m afraid I feel that way myself. When one reads & hears of the political & military squabbling the world over, one

wonders whether the boys’s [sic] sacrifice were after all in vain.
The days are grey & cold now this week the drought broke & never was rain more badly needed. Things were getting very serious. It will be a year this weekend since Keith came home but so far has not any prospects of leave. How are you keeping these days, Doris? Chin up & smiling I hope? Must away now – All our love
Lovingly yours

My dear Doris
All the way to village I was saying to myself “There [underlined] will [/underlined] be a letter from Doris & there was! Now I have a sad confession to make – yesterday I had a fit of blues & for the first time for months went out to lunch. On returning home about 4.20 my eyes alighted on a package on kitchen table, & with my heart in my mouth I read “delivered by A. Edwards RAAF. note enclosed” just you imagine it, home for weeks on end then to be away just the day he came. However he called at the mills & saw Mr P. for a few minutes & he asked him to come & stay a weekend soon. Thanks for the sweet little gifts & booklets ect [sic] Doris, I’ll be writing by sea mail & thank you properly. The letter & snaps ect [sic] made us very sad, & I shed a lot of tears. The Squadron photo is Bruce’s by the way. but the other one puzzles me, with the elderly gentlemen & Airforce boys. The little flight sgt looks very familiar to us both but we can’t place him. Have wired my regrets & thanks to Allan. We have been receiving letters & cards of condolence from far & wide. It makes us very sad. Allen Taggetts mother wrote me & she does feel deeply hurt that all their information has to come from Peggy, they have had no official news direct at all. We have not received a reply from Air Board but Peggy has let Mrs T. know the boys are laid to rest in France. Am at P.O. writing & it’s raining & I’ve three miles to walk so must away. Glad you
[page break]
had such a nice holiday.
Looking for your photo. Am wearing the little “Imp” – was greatly intrigued by him! Our love to your mother & lots to you.
Fondest love
Sincerely

My Dear Doris.
Was ever so pleased to rec. your letter of the 13th. I was feeling very sad that day, & had several telegrams from friends saying they were thinking of me. The year seemed to go very quickly but what untold suffering & grief was packed into it! I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed when you hear from War Graves Comm [Commission], Doris. They are the only people from whom we have heard & the letter contained no information except that Malcolm was laid to rest Court L’Eveque. Grave I. (Don is Grave II so they are sleeping side by side.). Mr Brown’s communication went so far as to say – “Court Leveque, in Dept [Department} of Haute, Marne, France.” There is something wrong, somewhere. More information should be forthcoming, but if Mrs Grieve’s dream comes true she hopes to visit this place & contact the people, so one day we may yet know the facts. We received the form to fill in, from War Graves Directorate, for inscription on the poor kid’s headstone. Only 43 letters may be used & they suggest “Duty nobly done” or some such. Preferring something a little more original we chose “Sleep well, Beloved.” Do you like it?
By the way, Doris, did the air ministry notify you at the time that Malcolm must now be presumed dead? I have often wondered & meant to ask you, because if they did it’s a wonder you did not receive this later news as did Mrs Shaw & the others
[page break]
Keith arrives home on 20th. Oh dear! He’s so long & lean & brown he looks like an Indian I tell him. They stayed 4 days with us then went to the city & on to Doris’s Jack for a few days & we expect them back tomorrow. Theres [sic] a letter from you for Doris she’ll be very thrilled. So the parcel arrived at long last. Fancy it has been nearly 5 months en-route. I hope your

My Dear Doris.
I posted an air letter to you a couple of days ago but since then I have received your photo and we are thrilled to bits with it, as it really is lovely. Thank you a million times for it. Also thanks for the snaps of Malcom & Don. I have forwarded Don’s on to his mother. I know she’d be glad to have it.
The weather here at present is most miserable – dull & foggy & so cold! We had two inches of very much needed rain this week & we are looking for a bit of sun shine now. Light snow fell on Tuesday but not to settle on the ground. Never the less it was bitterly cold. Yesterday we had a most successful afternoon in the village for our Red Cross Queens. It meant oodles of work but we didn’t mind that as the results were gratifying, we took over £40. We had in all 6 stalls – one an apron one & lots of pretty aprons were sold, then then a sweet stall & I made 6lbs. for this. A gift stall had lots of pretty things for sale, then there was miscellaneous stall, & the one I was looking after – produce. We had a dozen lovely fruit cakes besides
[page break]
lots of lovely sponges, home made biscuits, jams, preserves, etc & three dressed “Chooks” & a duck.
Keith & Doris return tonight & D. will be thrilled to bits to find your photo awaiting her as well as an airletter. Several weeks ago Doris posted Keith a pipe but he’s had two transfers

My dear Doris,
Here it is, practically the end of the week & your sea mail letter of Feb. 12th not answered yet. So here goes & I’ll not leave it till it is finished. Have been exceedingly busy today so, having a lot to do I got a move on so have a few minutes to spare. Tonight is the big Red X ball. But we don’t go, just send along our “door money” & some eats Made 6 dozen sausage rolls this morning & bye & bye soon as I’ve had some lunch, am going to a neighbour’s to cut sandwiches. Quite a gloom has been cast over everything by President Roosevelt’s death. It is a tragedy but one can find it in one’s heart to thank God it isn’t Churchill! Regarding Malcolm’s bike, I have not had any communication from the Air board with the exception of the letter at Christmas time, asking what I would like them to do with it. Undoubtedly they are a lot muddlers, & the time (& red tape) wasted is scandalous. Malcolm had told us about the snow, & the clearing of the runways but never mentioned the little brush-up
[page break]
he had with Bud over it. He was always most careful when writing, as he reckoned he did not intend the censor to get to work on it with his razor blade & quite often, if he did mention any little thing he was in doubt about he’d write “I hope the censor lets this thro’ – or words to that effect – then at the end of his letter “Cheerio censor”!
You asked me to tell you something of the Malcolm you did not know Doris. Well, really, there is little to tell. Life for him had only just begun. At school he was always smart, & anything he undertook to do, was done thoroughly. He was, when 16 in a shop & how he loathed it! dressed up behind a counter when he could be in greasy overalls driving a tractor, ect ect [sic].
We allowed him to leave & he was in his element on the farm, driving the tractor & shearing sheep ect [sic]. A greater opportunity came his way when about 18 & he went to the Sth. east on a big property, but all his pals were joining up, & numerous were the letters that came begging our consent to allow him to join up. At last he came home & weedled a reluctant “Yes” from his dad. He used to say to me, “Now
[page break]
3)
don't be worrying, will you Mops. It will be 2 years before I see action”. How quickly those two years went! Malcolm was always the same happy laughing kid. I’ve snapshots of him when he was but a little chap & practically right thro his short life, & one day soon, when I can bring myself to do so, I am putting them in an album. He loved everything small – puppies, kittens, chicks, & even babies! Across the road from us is a sheep station & I never failed, for as long as I can remember, to tell him, when writing of the appearance of the first wee lambs, & even from England, he wrote so excitedly in reply to this bit of news. Any day now the first lambs will appear & ever & anon I find myself at the kitchen window looking for them, & in a way I’m rather dreading their coming. I know I’m going to have a weep.
- Doris is now established at the hostel at Undalya; we took her down the other night, & three of the girls were in residence – the matron, sub matron & Welfare officer – they are all young & of course are called by their Christian name by all the [deleted] all [/deleted] girls – all except the W.O, Miss Jean Scott – she has
[page break]
4)
has always been “Scotty” to the girls. The train was due in less than an hour, bringing the other 18 girls so there was great rushing round, a big fire blazed in the kitchen stove & the kettles were all singing a welcome. Miss Scott showed us thro the hostel & it is beautiful. The rooms are large, there are several bedrooms, Doris claimed one with three beds for herself & two friends – Barbara & Diana. The largest bedroom contains 6 beds, 6 dressing tables, 6 chairs & three wardrobes so you can judge at the size.
Big French windows open out on the veranda from these bedrooms. The dining room is furnished like a Café – there are several small tables, each seating 5 or 6 girls & as they go in “gangs” so these “gangs” must sit at the one table! The sitting room is large, & contains a huge table, where the girls may sit & write or play table tennis ect [sic]. There’s a lovely big fireplace, & a big bay window complete with roomy window seat makes it an ideal room for the girls to spend their few leisure minutes. Now they have a gardening craze & sent to me for some seedlings. Just how long the craze will last remains to be seen. Doris & Barbara are
[page break]
coming out for the weekend.
We had Doris & Margaret over Easter & my sister Hazel & hubby & the two boys motored over for the day. The girls didn’t get up Sunday morning till 10.30 & looked quite crestfallen. Marg. Said “we would have got up hours ago, but we were [underlined] sure [/underlined] we’d get breakfast in bed” I reminded them it was April 1st. When I went to bed that night I just couldn’t get in, & found they’d got a bit of their own back by “short sheeting” the bed. Had a letter from Mrs Gryst during the week, she said Bruce is reporting daily to Depot, just waiting from day to day to see what will turn up. Well, I really must stop now Doris, get around & have a good time, won’t you. Don’t be too sad, it is not what Malcolm would want, & I have grieved enough & shed tears enough for us both. They say time is a great healer, but it must be a dreadfully long time, as the ache in my heart today is just the same as it was 9 months ago. We never will forget Malcolm & it is almost impossible to beleive [sic] that never more will we hear that happy laugh. Not in this world, that is, but we’ll meet again someday.
Our fondest love, M Payne xxxxx

My dear Doris
Was so glad to receive your air letter of July 1st yesterday and do so much appreciate what you are doing for us. I know only too well dear how you are feeling & the shock you must have got. I'll never forget opening Mrs Shaw's letter, every thing went black & just for one awful moment I was sure I was going to faint. Naturally we are feeling hurt at being so shabbily treated by Air Ministry - Air Board in Aust. is just as ignorant of facts as we ourselves but have set about making inquiries. As early as May 6th Mrs Grieve was notified of the facts yet it was June 6th when we were informed "that all efforts to trace our son being fruitless, he must now be officially presumed dead. Only last week we received the dear kids death certificate "officially presumed dead." The English & Canadian parents were notified by telegram before receiving letter of explanation & photo. Yesterday we had a note from War Graves Directorate (Melbourne) saying Malcolm was laid to rest at local cemetery of Court [sic] L'Eveque. Imagine the shock it would have been had we not had letters from Canada & England. Mrs Grieve has kindly offered to have a photo taken off hers for us & Peggy is having one done for Allen's parents
[page break]
It is most kind of Mrs Grieve. She said its a lovely photo & shows the French people standing reverently by & the caskets are covered with lovely flowers. She is going to France one day to see Allans grave & I'd love to press a lot of flowers from my garden dear & send her to take to Malcolm for me. His grave by the way is No 1. Little "Scottys" is No 3
[page break]
You will probably have had some details by the time this reaches you. He was wonderful to know & you tho you had him for so short a time, you have wonderful memories Sorry about cutting, I meant to have sent it before but will do so during week. Keith is on his way home will arrive about 20th. Now my dear, all our love, & be brave. Words are very futile but I think of you so often.
Fondest love,
M. Payne.

An account of the resource
Appreciates all that Doris is doing. Writes that the are being shabbily treated by Air Ministry and that others had been informed of their relatives fate they had not. They had received notification of presumed dead and that Malcolm was laid to rest in Court L'Eveque. This would have been a shock if they had not had letters from relatives of other crew members. Mention photograph of burial in France sent to her by another relative,
