Dear Lew,
What about a letter? you promised to write as soon as I came back off leave, but so far I have received nothing, you lousy bastard.
Well, what sort of time did you have at Christmas? bloody awful I suppose, a few beers at the local, and a nice long talk with Ted, incidentally do you know we should have gone down and had tea with him, on the Sunday
[page break]
2.
before I came back off leave, if he mentions anything about it to you, will you offer him my most humble apologies.
I had quite a good time at Christmas, in fact much better than I probably would have had at home, bags of wine, women and song, much more wine than anything else, I received quite a shock a few days after Christmas, when I received a bill from one of the local pubs, for a few dozen pint glasses, I can't remember smashing them, but I was in such a state I think it better to pay up and ask no questions, just in case something else comes to light.
[page break]
3.
Do you remember borrowing a pound from me, one night in the Grandport? no, I didn't think you did, well you bloody well did see, not that I'm asking in a polite way for it back, I don't want you to get that impression at all, maybe I am prepared to give it you, a genuine case of brotherly love, and I should like to know what has happened to it, just in case the occasion should arise, when I have to approach you for a loan, I want to make sure I would be O.K.
How did Teds wedding go? I sincerely hope Sam managed to get a bottle of whiskey, personally I didn't see the point
[page break]
4.
of having one bottle, I could drink the bloody lot myself and still be sober. Did you rise to the occasion and make a wiz-o speech, I wouldn't be suprised [sic] if you made yourself look stupid, but all joking apart, will you wish Ted all the best for me.
Have you managed to get your [indecipherable word] yet? I am looking forward to spending some most enjoyable evenings during my next leave, when Pam and yourself are at the pictures.
Nothing more,
Cheers,
Ant.
P.S. Thanks for the card.

Dear Lew,
Its about time you answered my letter, I suppose you have been much to [sic] busy catching the train from Banbury to Oxford and vice versa, lucky bastard, wish I had the same chance.
As you say it probably is much better that I stay where I am, I have no particular desire to stick my head out, and to be perfectly frank I am beginning to enjoy
[page break]

it here.
It took me almost a couple of weeks to get organised, but I eventually succeeded in doing so and at the moment I am having a wizard time.
From what I can gather there is every possibility that I shall be stationed here for the duration, I was having a chat with a couple of old hands a day or so ago, they have been here for 2 years and are likely to stay for another couple, so you see, my chances of being posted are very remote indeed.
[page break]
3.
Personally I don't mind how long I stay, leave is quite good, 14 days every eight weeks, and strangely enough the train service is absolutely wizard, I can book a sleeper on the boat train at Stranraer and sleep all the way down to London, I believe it takes 14 hours to get there, but as there are no changes, and I can sleep all the way its a piece of cake.
I beleive [sic] Bert Price is coming on leave soon, if you are home and you see him, take him out on the ale, I know he would
[page break]
4.
welcome a night out on the piss, so if you called for him one night it would be the opportunity he has been waiting for.
All for now.
Cheers
Ant.

Friday.
Dear Lew,
Arrived at this bloody awful place a couple of days ago, after a binding journey of 14 hours, honestly its the most horrible hole I have ever met up with, and I am doing my utmost to obtain a posting.
About this transfer, I have made a few enquiries and nobody knows sweet fanny adams about the necessary forms etc., so if you could let me know the
[page break]
number of them, I could get cracking, but from what I can gather the chances of it coming off are very remote, you see I have never been to an O.T.U. therefore it is very improbable that they will consider me becoming an Instructor at one. At the moment I am supposed to be instructing on 'wireless', which consists of flying with the pupils, and helping them to become familiar with general working conditions in the air, also I shall probably be called upon to do some ground instructing, if
[page break]
you think I can do the same job or something similar at your station, then there is a definate [sic] possibility of my transfer becoming effective, if not, then I shall have to 'gen' up on Gunnery and see what can be done in that respect.
When you are home again, you might ask our ‘Ma’ to forward on the R.A.F. slacks I left at home, I intended the 'Old Man' having some which were at the bottom of my kitbag, and when I have the ones I left at home, I can forward the other
[page break]
ones on, don't forget, because I have to walk about all day in my best bags, and I want to save them as much as possible.
If I have the misfortune to stay here more than a couple of months I may be having some leave, at the moment it is booked from Dec. 3rd to Dec. 17th, which as you can see just misses Christmas, I have tried to get it changed, but as you know, a new arrival can't do much, nevertheless I am doing my best, and in the long run may be able
[page break]
to do something
All for now.
Cheers Ant.
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined]
No idea of your address, shall have to forward to the 'old homestead.'

Dear Lew,
What the fucking hell has gone wrong with you, you son of a slant eyed chinese whore, your [sic] worse than a spare prick at a wedding and probably just about as useless.
I suppose by now you have received my reply to your last letter, just in case you didn't, in which case I humbly apologise for

what I have written above, I will repeat the details.
I was unable to have any leave changed from Feb 28th sorry, but thats the way it is, if you have nothing better to do on the morning of the 26th maybe you could be at the L.M.S. station about 10.30 a.m. I should arrive by then, if anything a little earlier. Maurice Varny will be home approximately the same time as us, so we shall have a nice drinking school.
Nothing more,
Cheers,
Ant.

Thursday,
Dear Lew,
Many thanks for your letter, repeat letter, I am extremely sorry I am unable to acknowledge any more, because of the most elementary reason, I haven't received them, lost in the post I suppose, or they weren't even posted.
I find it difficult to answer your letter because although it contained a couple of pages the whole of it could be condensed into a single line, but still I will do my best, maybe I can at least put up a better show then you.
Regards leave, I shall be commencing my usual fourteen days leave on September 10th (approx: four weeks time} and if you could possibly arrange yours to coincide I am sure we could have a most enjoyable time, providing of course that Pam will let you have your
[page break]
own way occasionally.
[two indecipherable words] wrote and told me that you and Ted spent quite a few days together recently, I'll bet you had a grand time, bags of ale and politics, don't forget to give me all the gen when I see you again, incidentally I believe Ted has a couple of evacuees, are they any good?
Nothing more,
See you soon,
Cheers,
Ant.
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined] If you can arrange your leave to coincide please write and let me know, and in the meantime start saving a few coppers
