Tom was born on the 6th November 1921 in Walkden Nr Manchester the youngest Son of Herbert and Grace.
Tom attended St Johns School and passed his scholarship at 11 yrs old, he then went onto Bolton commercial (lords) and won the honours gold medal of school in 1936. later when attending evening classes at Worsley Technical School and gained first place in the 2nd year clerical examinations in the union of Lancashire, to which he was employed by Cooper and Cooper as a chartered accountant.
He was known locally as a keen table tennis player and in 1935 played for the Bolton YMCA junior team, and later in the RAF played for the stations team.
At the outbreak of war Tom joined the Home Guards gaining his Signals Pass, He was sent to guard buildings during the heavy blitz in Manchester.
Tom signed up in the R.A.F.V.R on the 20th March 1941, he initially wanted to be a fighter pilot but was not accepted, so he went onto train as air gunner and passed operation training in Scotland, he was then posted onto Lincolnshire and took part in raids over U boat bases such as St Nazaire, raids over the Ruhr such as Essen, Dusseldorf etc..
Tom married his childhood sweetheart Edith on the 19th December 1942 at St Pauls Church Walkden, his bomber crew attended the wedding. His last home leave was at the end of April 1943, by 13th May 1943 he and his crew where reported missing. A telegram was sent to his Wife and in November 1943 he was presumed killed in action, for pension purposes ect and his personal effects were returned to his Wife. His Wife had anxious months and when the war ended in 1945 teams from the War Graves Commission went into Europe and in December 1947, his Wife received the news that his grave had been found in the Netherlands at Harderwijk General Cemetery along with his crew members. Eventually headstones were erected and his Wife was allowed to choose an inscription of 60 letters which she chose
INTO THE DARK THEY FLEW AND ON TO THE GLORIOUS MORN.
After years of waiting for news of his whereabouts his Wife never gave up hope, in hoping the crew had been taken prisoners and they would be home soon after the war ended, but that was not to be, like so many of Bomber Command.

Reg ‘Jimmy’ Woolgar was born and schooled in Hove. He began working life as a valuations assistant and was training to be a surveyor, which was interrupted when, in December 1939, he joined the RAF. Although he had aspirations to become a pilot, he trained as a wireless operator/air gunner instead. His wireless operator training was carried out at the wireless training school, RAF Yatesbury. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/849/PWoolgarRLA1609.2.jpg His air gunnery training on Fairy Battle aircraft was conducted at RAF West Freugh. On 15 November 1940 he was promoted to sergeant and posted to No 10 OTU at RAF Upper Heyford. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/845/PWoolgarRLA1601.2.jpg Initially flying Anson aircraft and then Hampdens with C Flight, he had his first ‘Lucky Jim’ moment, on 6 February 1941, when his Hampden aircraft was forced to crash land in a field near Cottesmore, in Lincolnshire. The aircraft was written off, but he and the pilot survived with minor injuries. At the end of operational training, instead of going directly onto operasations, he spent the next 5 months as a screen operator instructor. Eventually, on 1 September 1941, he was posted to 49 Squadron, Hampdens, at RAF Scampton https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/852 where his very first operational trip (described as a baptism of fire) was to Berlin. With headwinds going out and coming back, and nil visibility, it was likely the crew would have to bail out. Fortunately, the skipper found a break in the clouds and the aircraft landed wheels down in a field near Louth. The aircraft had to be recovered back to base, transported by road, on a low loader. On another occasion, on a mine laying operation to Oslo Fjord, his aircraft was peppered with anti-aircraft fire, it returned to base with 36 bullet holes in the fuselage and mainplane. A bullet had also passed through the upright of his gun sight while he was looking through it, whilst another tore through his flying suit. The nickname ‘Lucky Jim’ was beginning to stick.
In February 1942, on an operation to Manheim, the port engine, hit by flak, cut dead. Despite jettisoning all superfluous weight, which unfortunately included all the navigation equipment, the aircraft rapidly lost height, and the pilot ditched the aircraft in the English Channel. Whilst the crew had struggled to keep the aircraft airborne, (on a single engine), it had steered on a massive curve and unbeknown to them was headed down the English Channel, before it ditched. The crew scrambled out onto the wing and managed to inflate the dingy, then had to cut the cord attaching the dingy to the aircraft using a pair of nail scissors, moments before it sunk. In the water for hours, the crew thought they were drifting near the Yorkshire coast, but were rescued by a motor anti-submarine boat, much to their surprise, near the Isle of Wight.
Operational flying was intense, Reg would feel wound up before take-off and there was much apprehension on the way out to the target. Often, they flew through intense flak that was sometimes so close they could smell it. There was always a sense of sense of relief once they came away from the target. In between operations, each day was treated as it came along with many off-duty hours spent socialising in the local hostelries https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/853
After his first operational tour (he completed two) he was commissioned and became gunnery leader with 192 Squadron in 100 Group.
After the war ended, he signed on for an extra two years and was posted to Palestine as an air movements staff officer. Luck was again on his side when, one day, he was on his way to an Air Priorities Board Meeting at the King David Hotel when the hotel was bombed, resulting in many army and civilian casualties.
After a short tour in Kenya, as Senior Movements Staff Officer, he returned to Palestine flying with 38 Squadron until August 1947. In his flying career he amassed over 1000 flying hours. For services to his country Reg was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/858
He was released from the RAF in September 1947. Initially employed as an assistant valuations officer, he studied to become a Chartered Surveyor and secured a job as a senior valuer with the City of London. He later became the planning valuer of the city. After 14 years he was made a partner at the firm St Quintin Son and Stanley. Reg retired in 1971.

Plane races food to Army in snow-bound camp
Cut off 4 days by huge drifts
Meat is landed by parachute
THEY GOT THEIR RATIONS BY AIR

Airmen loaded into the ‘plane the food that saved the boys.
“Sunday Chronicle” Special Correspondent
SOMEWHERE IN SCOTLAND, Saturday.
FOUR HUNDRED officers and men of the Royal Army Service Corps unit in South-west Scotland were marooned without supplies for four days during the “Great Freeze” last month, it was revealed today.
With huge snowdrifts – as high as telegraph poles- surrounding their camp, and cutting off road and rail contact for 40 miles around, they found themselves with just enough bread and meat for one more day.
Through their one remaining telephone line the commanding officer managed to get an SOS through to headquarters. Immediately a giant bomber was loaded with 700lbof bread and took off for the camp. The panels in the bomb-aimer’s compartment were removed so that the food could be dropped. After 35 minutes the pilot reached the marooned camp, and the entire unit turned out to watch the machine circle six times, dropping the bread by parachute.
Bad weather prevented meat supplies, which were now exhausted, being dropped on the following day.
A smaller plane managed to get through to drop yeast, so that people living nearby could make bread.
Next day the bomber returned and dropped 1,000lb of meat and a further supply of bread.
The bomber pilot stated that the snow was so deep around the camp that roads were hidden.

My dear Maggie
Thanks awfully for the nice assorted parcel which I have just collected from the Post Office.
They all will be very useful especially now I was out of Shaving Cream & had only 20 cigs left. We are now flying every night so are unable to get out to replenish the stock.
Well as Regards Xmas it was quite OK but couldn’t do a lot because on Xmas day we were the only crew who were sufficiently advanced to be able to fly as a crew so were standing by in the event of Air Sea Rescue being required
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
but luckily we were not called on.
On Xmas Eve we were flying until about 5 o’clock, and on Dec 22 we flew up to Lossiemouth & back the next day Thats [sic] the reason the Xmas cards were late arriving. Xmas night I was invited to the WAAF NCO’s party had quite a good time there, plenty to eat and drink Free and since then have not been flying on the Sunday after Xmas we flew down to Newquay Cornwall & back quite a nice trip but flew over cloud the whole way never saw the ground once either there or back.
And each day since we have
[page break]
been night flying and even if the weather is bad when we are due to start we still have to hang about to wait for either better or worse weather to come We have only one more night trip to do here so shall be moving on again
Well I think thats [sic] all for now except to wish you all the best for 1943
Thanking you
Your loving brother
Ellis

Dear Dad,
Since last writing you I’ve been around a bit. My days of living a life of luxury in classy hotels is a thing of the past. I was first posted to a fairly large station which didn’t appeal much although it had everything possible to make camp life pleasant and was far ahead of any other I’ve ever seen. I only lasted a couple of days there and will not yet commit myself [deleted] by [/deleted] so yet as far as the next phase is concerned. However it should be alright.
[indecipherable word] naturally left the majority of the boys but Brennan and old [indecipherable name] are still with me. Amongst the other Australians here is Maurice McNamara who is a wireless operator and wishes to be remembered to you all.
There is a little entertainment with a couple of dances and a picture show during the week and they have quite a decent sergeants mess. There is also a town not so very far off but according to all reports it is very small and not much shops. However we’ll not be worrying much about that for we will probably have plenty of work to keep us going and besides
[page break]

it wont hurt to save a little money. Thank God we are here in the warm season for I should imagine Scotland would not be very pleasant in winter – the winds are quite strong enough now and plenty cool in the bargain.
My mail is still not coming through too well as yet and I suppose it will take a while longer to catch up with over here. Enough of me! How are you all keeping at home? What happened with Uncle Jim and how is he? And what of the Brennan’s and the various other relatives round about? I’m still awaiting some definite news as to Dan’s actual whereabouts.
How are the cards treating you these days. I suppose you still have an occasional interest. You can pat me on the back for, although we are now right in the thick of the classes, young Pat hasn’t invested so much as a half-penny as yet. As a matter of fact they are usually over when I’m trying to pick them lately.
Tell the nipper to drop me a line, occasionally giving me the low down on the league football. Hoping you are not overworking yourself. I’ll write again soon. Love to you all, Pat.

Dear Dad,
As I probably told you in my last note, I’m now on leave. We’ve been having such beautiful weather I thought I’d get away this time without taking my coat. But lo & behold when leaving on Sunday it was snowing & was bitterly cold.
Couldn’t get a train to York & had to go to Hull & thence to Leeds, where I stayed once more with Mrs Aberaydi.[?] She got a shock at seeing me on my own for we hadn’t been over to her place since Christmas. She and the old boy got very upset & got all the home addresses from me. The old laddie is a helpless invalid from the last war & loves to have someone to
[page break]
natter to.
I had a day in London & it was even snowing down there. Ran into numerous blokes I knew including Doug Johnson, whom I’d not seen since his accident at [indecipherable word]. He got on to Mosquito’s & had bags of Berlin trips. Also Kev Shanahan[?] who was shot down over the Dover about a week before us. They all got out but the engineer & I think [two or three indecipherable words] young Kevin Dennis had a foot ….agged off.
[one indecipherable word] A.I.F. lads taken in Greece & Crete, [two or three indecipherable words] round London awaiting repat. At the moment I’m down in Dorset staying with Wally’s people, in this very quiet little village. I had intended going down to Torquay but the weather isn’t the best & I wouldn’t get any swimming unless I went into a heated pool.
I think most of the rest of the crew went up to Scotland this leave.
[page break]
We celebrated Anzac day last week by getting airborne and doing our first operation as a new crew. It was a pretty easy stage to the Frisians & we got a certain amount of ribbing as “Janoks” when we got back & found we were the only kite on the A squadron who’d been hit by flak. It was just a small bit through the windscreen which made [two indecipherable words] home cold & uncomfortable [two indecipherable words].
It looks as though, thank God, we’ve had it [indecipherable word]. I don’t give a damn actually [indecipherable word] we are left over here on transport, sent to another theatre of war, or returned home on repatriation. I’ve been considering getting stuck into a few exams to take out a civil navigation licence but so far, as usual, I’ve been too tired & lazy.
Incidentally did South African snapshots ever turn up yet. I hope they didn’t go astray. Regards & love to all, Pat.

My Dearest Mother,
Heres [sic] another note to let you know that Im [sic] as fit as ever and should be leaving England for Rhodesia in a couple of weeks but will cable you exactly when just before I leave. I am told that we can have the option of going by sea or air – leaving from Brighton which is the [deleted] west [/deleted] S. African reception depot. Shall probably come by air which should only take four days.
I arrived in Castle Cary a week ago and have spent most of the time seeing all the cousins and Aunts. Am staying at Cary Hill and was very pleased to see them all again. Uncle Jack is getting pretty frail but is as cheerful and talkative as ever. Aunt Annie is still pretty active but has lost a lot of weight since I last saw her. Gave Uncle Jack a hand getting his car on its wheels again and also dug up a bit of his garden for him as it is pretty hard work for him. Auntie Ella is in good form and has a land girl who is good company for her and also seems to get through a tremendous lot of work on the farm.
[page break]
On Wednesday I hired a car [missing word] took Uncle Jack Aunt Annie & Ella into Wells. It was very disappointing to find Aunt Bess in the state she is, but she remembered me and was pleased to see us. It must be awful for her as she cannot read and the rest of the patients must be pretty poor company for her. She seemed to be fairly normal except that she is very worried and anxious and seems to have some sort of complex about the staff there treating her very indifferently.
If she could only get a few nurses to look after her at her place in Ansford she would probably be a lot better than where she is now. Although Uncle Jack and the others think she is in the best possible place.
Well after seeing Aunt Bess we called in on Mrs Russell who is truly remarkable. Her mind is as active as ever and she still takes a very live interest in everything that goes on. She was awfully pleased that I called and sends her best regards to Dad, and is also most grateful for the parcels she has received.
After that we dashed down and saw Jim Coates who looks remarkably fit and told me to tell Dad he does it on
[page break]
[missing word] Walker – He certainly is a good advertisement for it. Well we then went back to Cranlee Croft for tea and Roy, the boys & I went to the pictures in Cary
The [indecipherable word] still have their place opposite Uncle Jacks and had a good look round his garden. He is always “at it” and must be very proud of what he has made of the place.
I went down to Torquay to say hallo & good bye to the Mills. Pat the daughter is engaged to an army man who lost a leg and collected a lot of shrapnel and an M. C. in Italy. I only had two hours [deleted] and [/deleted] as all hotels were absolutely packed and came back here again for last night as there were two S. African ex PoWs who I wanted to see again.
Everyone is astounded at how well I look – probably a lot better than 4 years ago – so you can expect to see a pretty healthy looking son. – My old uniform is now too tight for me so that goes to show how much weight I’ve put on.
Leaving next week for Scotland and will then be able to nip home as soon as possible
Much love and best wishes to all
From your loving son Donald.

My Dearest Mother,
I arrived here a week ago yesterday and am returning to Wolverhampton on Tuesday (leaving here this evening for a night trip to London.) We have to report to Cosford R.A.F. station (near Wolverhampton for a thorough medical, not that I feel in need of anything of the sort, but its just as well to make quite sure that Im [sic] sound in mind & limb.
Have had a very restful week up here – Aunt Nellie insisted on my having breakfast in Bed every morning. The weather has been pretty poor most of the time so have spent most of the time in front of the fire. Have spent two afternoons down in [deleted] Glasgow [/deleted] Bridge of Weir with Babs who has a small car to do her rounds in, so she drove me around the countryside somewhat.
Aunt Isabel is pretty fit and has been trying to convince me that Scotland is the country to live in.
[page break]
However even the much vaunted Highlands are not much compared with our Eastern Districts what say you. Anyway perhaps the weather is against Scotland.
Babs took me to the Banks of the Clyde & we saw Greenock on the left, Dumbarton on the right & Ben Lomond straight ahead (through the mist.) She is staying in a very nice house which is a good advertisement for the medical profession.
The Tullochs & I went to “tea” with the Dunns yesterday and they are coming to get their own back this afternoon, as a sort of send off – dont [sic] know whether or not Babs will be able to come or not. Jim Dunn has aged a lot and seems to feel very sorry for himself at times, and is not such a cheerful bird as when he came to Rhodesia
He has presented me with a set of [deleted] dessert [/deleted] “desert tools” (dessert spoons) to give to Harry for a wedding
[page break]
present.
When passing through London on my way here I was inoculated against yellow fever and also vaccinated, and the latter is causing me a bit of discomfort. We have to wait two weeks after the inoculation before leaving England which will almost certainly be by aircraft and I should be on my way to see you again about the middle of next week.
Which means that I shall probably be home again within three weeks at the latest. Anyway shall telegram you on the day I leave.
Cheerio again the ‘noo.
Much love to you all from
Donald.
P.S. received all the cables & two letters from you also one from Jack.
